So crunchy that you could not even stick a fork in it. The time before this, I ordered delivery and the delivery person took it to the wrong address. This is by far the worst "Chinese" food I have even had. After waiting for over an hour for the order to be delivered I already started lowering the expectations I had for this meal,m. I don't understand how this place can still be in business. Between all of us we had ordered 3 dinner meals, a Chicken and Shrimp combo, shrimp lomein, and sweet and sour chicken all to be served with fried rice. We also got hot sour soup wonton soup and veggie lomein. Let's start with the Chicken and shrimp combo I'm pretty sure the chicken is TVP. It would be near impossible to cut or cook chicken in any fashion that has would have the mouth feel and resemble tripe. It was completely soft and void of any flavor, at first I thought it was a mushroom. The dish only had two shrimp. The veggie lomein has very little veggies in it and they had a fantastic "aged" flavor. The vegetable spring rolls had very little cabbage and were undercooked. Let get on to the fried rice. We thought we had to compromise when we drove through this town when my kids were craving Bubble tea and Chinese food. We took a huge leap of faith and ordered from a place in middle of no where with low ratings. It was a total surprise for us, being a Chinese family from NYC, we do know a thing or 2 about Chinese food. Food was very authentic and better than many NYC restaurants. There problem is that the flavor is too authentic and I can see why many Non Asians may not enjoy it. I have been eating Uncle Chen's food since the early 2000s, and is it consistently great every time we eat it. For me, the broccoli in garlic sauce is the most tastiest dinner special. It's perfect! And my kids love the sesame chicken and ask for it often. We sometimes get general tso's chicken and I also love Brain's Chicken, which is general tso without breading. Uncle Chen's is a staple in our home and I can't recommend it enough! Plus, the people who work there are so kind and caring. I ordered off of door dash expecting it to take 20-30 minutes. After no update from the app I got a text from a random number saying that I needed to pick up the phone and specify which dorm it was going to. I tried calling but nothing so I texted back and got no reply. Eventually I contacted DoorDash services and got the number to call. The man on the phone listened to my situation for maybe 15 seconds before interrupting me, never the less I waited for another 20 minutes. At that point I had no update of where my order was or how long it would be so I called back, again treated worse this time with the guy being clearly upset with me as if I had done something wrong. I asked how much longer and he said he had no clue, maybe 10 minutes (this place isn't even ten minutes from my dorm but I let it go) and that they would call me when they were here. During recent business trip I ordered some Terrible Chinese food from Uncle Chens!!! Each dish lacks flavor despite being drowned in a thick sauce that all tasted the same. Very low quality meat (chicken, pork and beef) used in dishes w/ some meat being grizzly and other mushy. Veggies were cooked to mush. Soup was thick, with gooey consistency and tasted like salt. Wonton are doughy and mushy. Veggie rolls worst I've had. This place gets decent reviews on Yelp & Food delivery apps, but is simply terrible!! Definitely worth skipping this place. read more

I ordered food for delivery, it said it would take 45 minutes, it ended up taking an hour and a half and they forgot a part of my order. Uncle Chen's sent me a link to review the experience, I did so, stating the same information, also saying it was unacceptable and they TEXTED ME BACK saying "We don't just serve you. When we have football game in town, State College becomes 3rd largest city in Pennsylvania. But we are still a small business with limited resources and staff. If you can't wait, please come pick it up." Completely disrespectful, the food was cold and disgusting as well as them leaving out part of my order. Walked in and went straight to the bathroom. When I got out of the bathroom, one of the employees started yelling at me in an aggressive tone and said "that is not a public restroom" I politely told him that I was planning on eating and I then asked him where I can place an order" he immediately cut me off and said "you're not eating here, get out!" I then said "you're right, I'm surly not eating here". This is just an example of how you may be treated when you go in there. Why does the food here taste like dusty plastic that sat in a mildew basement? I have my suspicions...I tried them twice, for the benefit of the doubt, which was giving them too much credit. We arrived here not knowing there was no seating, which wasn't really a problem because they were quite quick with our order - we just sat on the chairs outside for our short wait time. In town for Setsucon at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, who instead of having menus for delivery uses http://orderup.com. Took advantage of the 10% off for first time customers. First issue, orderup menu layout sucks, but we got in a large order of around $80. Then things went down from here. Upon the arrival of the order, it's messed up. We're missing at least two main dishes and four egg rolls. Due to the large order it took a while to figure out what was missing and it took two of us on the phone to even convey this information to the employee who was working the phone at Uncle Chen's that night. They did eventually send us most of our missing items, but the time and stress of this messup can't justify the large amounts of food we were provided. Overall a poor experience that left several people very frustrated. What's surprising is out of all the conventions we attend, State College has some of the worst Chinese food experiences we've had. read more

Let's be realistic about Uncle Chen's: it's cheap, greasy Chinese food. Don't try to compare it to some Chinese restaurant with tablecloths and linen napkins because that's not what it is. It is fill-you-up-for-pennies, lazy man's grub. And I love it. When I was a student at Penn State I walked to class uphill both ways for 16 miles in the snow.... Wait, no.... I would order Uncle Chen's every Sunday evening with my boyfriend and his roommates and veg out watching TV. It was great. On a recent visit back to PSU we ordered up some Uncle Chen's. Being vegetarian now, our orders were a little modified but similar to what we used to get. I got the sautéed vegetables and my husband (the boyfriend from my college days) ordered orange tofu. It was pretty much as I remembered it: greasy, filling Chinese food. I really liked mine... the husband thought his was ok. In all, I still think it's a solid place for a cheap, bad-for-you meal. Not good, not good at all. Even by cheap Chinese takeout standards. Ma-po tofu was practically flavorless. Not even hot-spicy, just faintly sweet. I couldn't even see any evidence of chili oil. There was literally one bite in the whole dish where I could taste a Sichuan peppercorn. That's right, one singular peppercorn. Maybe four peas. Kind of amazing, really. It's as though they put special care into making it insultingly bland, and then threw in a single peppercorn as if to say,"yeah, we know what's supposed to be in this dish, and we are consciously omitting it." I have tried several in State College and just wasn't satisfied with any of them. Uncle Chen's had poor reviews so I was very apprehensive about ordering from them. Terrible terrible terrible food. The fried rice was dry and crumbly. It was more like couscous than fried rice. Delivery (the only reason I chose them because everywhere else was closed) took an hour and a half. This place is a perfect example of how a business can survive simply on students that are too drunk to care how bad food is as long as it is cheap. If you're sober there is no excuse for the absolutely horrific judgement you'd have to exercise by ordering from this place. Overall, very good food and generous sized portions. We had the General Tso's, Kong pow chicken, and some beef skewers. It was all pretty good. Also had egg drop soup, which I didn't think was too great, not much taste to it. We got takeout, and the order was ready when they said it would be. Might be nice if they use plastic containers instead of those flimsy Styrofoam ones. The container cracked, but at least it was contained in the bag. Will go back for mor. Looks like most reviews have covered the essentials here, so to recap: a) Uncle Chen's has HUGE portions. Even the dreaded dinner special (dreaded as in "oh no, it's a special? does that mean I'm going to get a teeny tiny serving of sesame chicken and then a boatload of rice plus a spring roll and will be expected to find it 'special'??" None of that here.) b) The huge portions are CHEAP. c) You always know what to expect (i.e.: the food is consistent). d) The sweet and sour soup is actually very tasty, as are the dumplings. Mmm. Now for the non-recap portion of the review. Our last visit to Uncle Chen's was following a Friday nigh of cowbell playing at the Phirst. We called, ordered, and walked over to pick it up (re-livin' the college days, I suppose). As expected, UC's was totally bumpin' on a Friday night, with phones ringing off the hook, drivers scrambling around with bags full of fried rice and the like. Since our food wasn't ready yet, my friend's hubby and I hung around with the staff, took a phone order or two (Shelley from Runkle Hall -- I'm sorry.) and got to enjoy some behind the scenes action. Needless to say, we left with some great food, and an even greater appreciation for the craziness that the staff puts up with working in a college town. Going around State College looking for that hole-in-the wall that made great food and I thought this was the place, especially if they claim to have "The Best General Tso's in town!" So I thought I would give this place a try. I came here a couple of time to try the following: Fried Chicken Wing: Gross! It was dry, overcooked, and overfried. It was so overfried that the chicken took on flavors from the cooking oil. It also lack any creative flavor, unless they count "old oil" as a flavoring. Sweet & Sour Pork: I am always on my search for that perfect Sweet & Sour Pork. This place did not have it. What was served to me was dried, battered pork pieces with no discernible seasoning that was drenched in the sweet & sour sauce. And that's it. No carrots. No green bell peppers. No onions. No pineapples. Not even sliced tomatoes! Just the battered pork "jerky" and sauce. Disaster. The Best General Tso's Chicken in town!: Against my better judgement, I returned to Uncle Chen's to give their General Tso's Chicken a try. After all, it is "the best General Tso's Chicken in TOWN!" Mind you, this is the first time in my life that I've ever order this dish from any chinese restaurant so I had nothing to compare this dish to. So I ordered this with the hope that this was their signature dish that has kept this business going. Got home and took a few bites and come to realize that this dish was no different from the Sweet & Sour Pork I ordered the other day. The only exception was it was a different protein and a different sweetened sauce. So I am not sure why this was considered the "best in town". My only explanation is that you need to be drunk in order to appreciate this dish? But who knows and who cares as I have no desire to come back to this place. So overall my experience wasn't good. Another restaurant that has reinforce my notion that most Chinese Restaurants in State College sucks, as least the ones near the Penn State campus.
