Traditional caucasian comfort food at it's best (worst for your cardiovascular system and waistline tho!) - starch, meat, salt, butter, cream... oh my! And to top it all off, huge homemade pies in about 8 different varieties. For the more health conscious (ha!) there's cabbage and beet soup - there's even some beans in there. I love Uncle Ed's. The service is fast, the food is good and the price is right. It's a calorie splurge but totally worth it. I also love that I can shop after, I always pick up soup and perogies from the frozen section, but there are many more items to choose from, like poppyseed donuts, cabbage rolls and affordable veal cutlets (they're hit and miss, sometimes stringy, but at $7 for a pack of 2 it's a good gamble). There's also a fridge section, the deli of course, and a little packaged good section. I like to pick up spätzle, sauerkraut and Jam Lady products here. They also have a small Ukrainian goods section and offer special items at Christmas and Easter. Uncle Ed's is an Edmonton institution, and their newer location in Beverly is clean and organized. Once again a wonderful meal at Uncle Ed's. Cheap. Delicious. Homestyle and filling. That is what you would get here. Also authentic. Everything is so delicous here. Service is good. It is kinda similiar to a small town dinner. No frills. Also the servers do their job but I can't say they were friendly. This time I had the smoked pork chop with the chedder perogies and the sour cabbage rolls and cheese filled crepes. I love thier smoked pork chop. I waffle on that an the meatballs. For advertising to be a ukranian restaurant no one spoke ukranian lol. I am giving you the opinion of my wife who is Ukrainian I am not, she just moved a year ago from there. The food was OK but not great. What we ordered and what she expected was not the same maybe it was changed to suit canadian taste? Who knows in any case she did not think it was authentic like what she would get back in Ukraine. I have to agree on some items she cooks it way better. I thought it was OK but what do I know lol. I would like to start by saying that Uncle Ed's is located in a part of the city that I would never normally visit: Beverly (specifically Beacon Heights). I'm grateful that this restaurant forced me out of my comfort zone and got me to branch out. It's really unfortunate when we only stay in our own little corners and miss out on what is happening elsewhere! Edmonton has a massive Ukrainian population - in fact, it's the largest Ukrainian urban community in Canada. So when VUE Weekly said that Uncle Ed's is the #1 Best Ukrainian 2018 in Edmonton... It's probably pretty good. My personal background is Polish and Russian - two countries that boarder Ukraine - and all of those Easter European flavours certainly carry similarities between countries. I was looking forward to experiencing comfort food that would remind me of my grandparents. Visiting on a Saturday evening, the restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside. Started in 1986 by the Stawniczy family, its got that strip-mall-from-the-80s vibe (but in the case of restaurants you should never judge a book by its cover). Entering the building, I was surprised to see that the entire right side of the space is set up as a store and deli - mainly a place for them to sell sausage (and other products) from their main location in the town of Mundare. (It's a town about an hour east of Edmonton and they even have a giant 42 foot tall sausage there. It's the world's largest sausage.) Mundare clearly knows it's way around a Ukrainian sausage and so you must definitely visit Uncle Ed's to try the kovbasa. I found the store section very interesting and enjoyed a quick perusal of the small aisles. If you're looking for interesting and authentic Eastern European imports, this is the place. The left side of the room is the restaurant - nothing fancy - just some simple tables and booths. The service was especially wonderful. We had two different servers taking care of us and each of them were warm, friendly, and went above and beyond to make our experience an enjoyable one. I could tell that they take pride in the food and are truly invested in what they do. It feels like a family business in every sense of the word (and they'll happily welcome you into the fold). Eastern Europeans loves them a soup. And yes, borscht is on the menu. But it's the Kapusnyak (Cabbage soup - $6.00 for a bowl) that caught my eye. I feel like my Polish grandmother used to make something similar to this and I was in heaven after the first bite. A dollop of sour cream is a must and this soup sang in my mouth. Big and bold, it's dense with shredded cabbage and has a strong pickled sauerkraut flavour to it. There were bits of carrot, beans, and lots of dill. Every bite felt like it was fixing my soul and I would return just to eat this soup again. It might not be for everyone. But it's absolutely for me. Next we were going straight for "The Real Deal," the traditional part of the menu filled with truly authentic Ukrainian plates. You've gotta try a bit of everything! The #8 Mundare Sausage combo (4 perogies, 4 cabbage rolls, 2 baked cheese buns, 2 cheese crepes - $14.00 for full size) seemed to really include all of the items that I wanted to taste. Plus I added Mushroom Gravy ($2.00). For some reason this meal took a really long time to arrive at our table. It seemed like someone forgot to make it. The restaurant was decently busy the entire time that we were there but it wasn't that busy. The server finally noticed that we still didn't have our food and it arrived shortly thereafter. This plate was filled with foods that I was excited to try - some familiar and some brand new. I jumped straight in and tried the famous Mundare sausage, otherwise known as kovbasa. Nicely grilled, juicy, and flavourfully smoked, I can see why this is a great example of Ukrainian sausage. Our server brought two types of mustard to eat it with (hot and mild) and I really loved the way that the hot mustard added a spicy kick. Next, perogies. You KNOW that the menu at Uncle Ed's is filled with perogies, otherwise they would be doing it wrong. Most cuisines around the world feature some sort of dumpling and the humble pierogi are certainly the all-stars of Eastern European cooking. (Who does them? Everyone! Hungary, Poland, Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia...) In Ukraine they're known as varenyky and Uncle Ed's makes four flavours; cottage cheese, cheddar cheese, onion, and sauerkraut. (Each flavour is mixed with potato.) I ordered the sauerkraut ones because that's the type that I remember the most from my childhood. I loved that they came drenched in butter and covered in fried onions and bacon bits (plus served with sour cream, of course). They tasted great! The dough wasn't too thick but had a good bite to it, and each little pocket was nicely uniform. Good 'ol Uncle Ed's. They've been open since 1959 and this is the first time that I've ever visited their restaurant/deli (it's combo style). With such a common sounding name, you wouldn't expect much but they have some delicious perogies and sausages. I'm 99% sure that you've had a Stawnichy's sausage before. If not, you need to remedy that immediately. Uncle Ed's is definitely old school. From the outside, it's not doing anyone any favours with it's ugly brown awning and generic looking building. However, the inside isn't bad with tables and booths to boot. The clientele is definitely of the grandma and grandpa variety. Ah, things to look forward to for the future: old age and senior discounts. Seriously, they have two pages on their menu that are dedicated to juniors and seniors only. Unfair. We each ordered our own plate of Ukrainian goodness: - 2x Mundare sausage plate ($11.25) - this was their special of the day (it's regularly $11.95 - sweet, we saved $0.70 each). Our plate consisted of sausage, 4 perogies, 4 cabbage rolls (sweet or sour), 2 baked cheese buns and 2 cheese crepes. The sausage was lightly fried while the perogies were nice and tender. We both picked sour cabbage rolls as I've had the sweet ones before. It was slightly sour, I could have used a bit more punch to them. The cheese buns and crepes were fluffy, soft and went well with the dill sauce. - Potato and cheddar cheese (8.50) and side of Mundare sausage ($2.75) - you get 8 pieces of perogy goodness along with sour cream, onion and bacon bits. My buddy ordered a side of sausage along with his perogies. Good choice because I don't think 8 perogies is enough to fill you up for lunch. If you're in the east end of the city, definitely check out Uncle Ed's. Seems like there are quite a few hidden gems worth checking out in this part of town. We celebrated my Mom's 80th birthday at Uncle Ed's. She grew up in Beverly, a former urban municipality within Edmonton where Uncle Ed's is located. Most of her family live in this area and were invited. We communicated with Marie who works here to plan our event. A surprise birthday dinner. It turned out perfect. We arrived first and were seated at a table and slowly our guests arrived. We had a choice of water, tea or coffee for drinking. The fresh salad was our first food to eat and it was delicious with crisp, healthy lettuce, cucumber and peppers. With a choice of dressing to choose. Then the feast started with two types of perogies, two types of cabbage rolls, Mundare sausage, cheese crepes, hot cheese buns and sour cream to add to the food.This was filling and no words could describe how delicious this was. Most of the women here are Ukrainian and have been cooking these dishes for years. They loved every bite. The servers were kept busy and they added food, took away empty plates, filled water glasses and provided fresh coffee and tea as needed. Doing all this with a friendly, easy going expression and nice mannerisms. We finished with cheese cake. It was so good and just a little piece of cake completed the meal. I tried some coffee with the cake and I enjoyed it. The restaurant was full, all tables were occupied. The pictures probly brought back some memories for those that have been here before. The bathrooms were clean and had enough supplies to last the night. If you like Ukrainian food, you will love this place!!!! Uncle Ed's is a family favourite for us, they never fail to deliver every time we go! The staff are all extremely welcoming, friendly and great with our smallest family member. I'm a huge fan of Mundare sausage (oo-er missus) and the fact I can combine it with delicious perogies is awesome! At the moment my personal favourite dish to order is actually the Order the Yelp offering, the Perogy Kebab! This features a 2 course meal on one plate. For the main there's the cheese perogies, the deep fried variety is awesome along with a selection of sausage meats. For dessert it's blueberry perogies with a fruit medley. So delicious! Other personal favourites are the ribs and just straight up perogy offerings. So worth checking out, an Edmonton institution that has quickly became an institution for my family as well! read more

My first time here and I totally got excited waiting for my food to come to the table! This place has an amazing selection of authentic, high quality, Ukrainian food! After checking out the deli counter, I got inspired to choose the Mundare sausage combo plate. The meat selection, is the one variable that changes, between the combos. My plate included 1 Mundare sausage, 4 perogies (I chose Sauerkraut flavor), 4 cabbage rolls (sweet or sour, I chose sour), 2 baked cheese buns and 2 cheese crepes (my absolute favorite!). Sounds like a lot, but I was very hungry and pretty much engulfed this plate of food. The only thing left were the small cheese buns, which I considered extra stomach fillers. In addition, one small peeled carrot was randomly added to (garnish?) the plate. The flavors of the foods totally compliment one another. The waitress gave us some spicy mustard, which in combination with the Mundare sausage - was a match made in food heaven! Also, the waitress gave 4 small little plastic containers (with covers) filled with sour cream. My taste buds were going in overdrive! This meal was so satisfying and cheap!! My combo plate was only $12! Free for me, because my boyfriend paid ;) To be honest, the service could've been a tad faster. But, when the food came I had no complaints. The dining area is old in design, but very clean and tidy. There were some random decorations such as sports jerseys and a pink guitar adorning the walls. I love places like Uncle Ed's - restaurants that serve great food, with unpretentious service (and patrons!) and ambiance like your Baba's kitchen. The menu is vast, with many different combo plates that include perogies, cabbage rolls, sausage, cheese buns, cheese crepes, ribs, pork chops and meatballs. They have borscht, burgers, kids plates and a seniors menu. I always get a perogie plate and add some sausage on the side. There is so much food on these plates, I rarely finish everything. The perogies and sausage are my favourite. You have the choice of sweet or sour cabbage rolls - I've had both and find them to be fairly similar and not too exciting. The borscht is a nice way to start your meal. I always find it hilarious how much sour cream they bring to the table. I've also tried bites of the ribs - yum! - and the meatballs with mushroom sauce - pretty good! If you want a good old fashioned Ukrainian meal with good old fashioned Ukrainians, go here! I definitely make a visit when I feel my Ukrainian side calling to me! Make sure to stop by the attached store to pick up some perogies for home. Being an avid perogy lover - I can't believe it took me this long to try out Uncle Ed's! Edmonton doesn't have many authentic Ukrainian restaurants so I was pretty excited to stop by for some perogies. Located on 118 Ave, it's been open since 1959 and shares the same space as Mundare's Sausage House. They serve up delicious, inexpensive, and high quality Ukrainian dishes. Their menu has a wide variety of choices, if you're not feeling like eating some perogies then you can choose from other options such as sausage patties, BBQ ribs, or cheese dog to name a few options! I got a Mundare Sausage Plate with my favourite flavour of perogies, potato & onion. Their other perogy choices are: potato & cottage cheese, potato & cheddar cheese, and potato & sauerkraut. The plate includes 4 perogies, 4 cabbage rolls (sweet or sour), 2 baked cheese buns, and 2 cheese crepes. Instead of 4 perogies and 4 cabbage rolls, I asked for 6 perogies and 2 cabbage rolls. It was very filling! The perogies were soft and tasted homemade, like Baba had made them. They were lightly topped with fresh onion and bacon. For my 2 cabbage rolls, I decided to try 1 sweet and 1 sour. I'm not the biggest fan of cabbage rolls but I didn't mind them from here. The baked cheese buns were delicious. They weren't overly cheesy and were topped with a dill cream sauce. On the other hand, the cheese crepes were a bit bland to me but the same dill cream sauce added some flavour to it. Lastly, the Mundare sausage was fresh and tasty. It was fried very lightly and came from the sausage house in the restaurant! We were also given mustard and hot mustard, along with the normal side of sour cream. I recommend trying the hot mustard with the sausage for a bit of a kick. Overall, my meal tasted very authentic and delicious! My friend tried their Sausage Patty Plate which is the same as mine, except there's a sausage patty instead of a sausage. He enjoyed his meal as well and said that the sausage was savoury and well seasoned. Mundare Sausage House is in the same space as Uncle Ed's. Yum! I make great perogies, but don't do it very often because it's just too time consuming and I can't be bothered. Okay... also, I eat too many if I make them at home and have them on hand. Uncle Ed's is the real deal. Homemade Ukrainian food at its finest. I had the mundare plate with cheddar perogies and sour cabbage rolls. Nalysnyky (or "cheese crepes") is my all time favourite, and they make a really good one here. The dill sauce is great too. There really isn't anything I can add that hasn't already been said in other reviews, so I'll keep this short. Except to add that we had the Berry Crumble for dessert and it was out of this world. I'll preface this review by stating that I love Ukrainian food. Upon entering the shop which houses both Uncle Ed's Restaurant and a small Ukrainian food/deli shop, I immediately noticed how amazingly delicious this place smelled. We arrived at about 1:45 on a Saturday afternoon and we definitely came at the right time. It seemed surprising to me that they had a waiting list for a weekend in mid-afternoon, but the restaurant quickly filled up to capacity within a few minutes of our arrival - luckily we did not have to wait. Beverages are all bottles or cans, but the selection goes beyond the usual Coke or Pepsi, etc. They also have Pop Shoppe drinks and some other varieties less-frequently seen in restaurants. There were two us, so we opted to order one larger meal and one smaller meal and share the items we got. It ended up being a good decision as the portion sizes were fairly large. The Mundare sausage didn't disappoint. Perogies were delicious and covered with real bacon and sweet sautéed onions. Cabbage rolls were tender and buttery-tasting. And we also really enjoyed the cheese buns and crepes which were covered in a tasty dill sauce. The restaurant also advertises a number of varieties of homemade pies, which unfortunately we didn't have room for. Prices were reasonable. Service was fast and friendly, and very efficient. We will definitely go back again. Only downside is perhaps that they seem to have slightly limited hours and are not open late. Our family drove here from Las Vegas and wanted to try as much new food as we could during our stay. My husband and I got combo platters, our teenagers got plates of perogies and our younger two went with origin so hotdogs with ketchup only. Their fries are delicious. They are kind of battered. Yummy!!! The borscht was a new experience for us and only our oldest child liked it. But I know that people who like Borscht say Ed's is the best. Ukranian food is something I discovered since moving to Edmonton. Everyone has been raving about perogies to me and I've tried a few different ones now but the plate of potato and cheddar perogies topped with onions, bacon and sour cream from Uncle Ed's are 100% THE BEST I've tried. So good I'm going back tomorrow to check out the deli. It was just me and my daughter so we were a bit boring and shared the perogies but there are so many combo options including various sausages, cabbage rolls, and different stuffings in the perogies too. The beet soup looks really good too. Lots of reasons to go back right there. The service was good, a bit of confusion at the start about where to sit and getting a highchair sorted, but once seated all the waitresses came over to chat at some point and made a real fuss of my wee girl. It really was like being at a family dinner - so many lovely people to chat with. One waitress even brought my daughter a little toy chick to keep. Even though Uncle Ed isn't my REAL uncle, I do consider this place a part of my family. Most of my visits to Edmonton include a visit for a meal and to pick up some of my favourite Ukrainian foods to take home with me. The restaurant can get pretty busy and they do have a bit of a sign in system, so check in with the cashier if there appears to be a line. Also, this is a pretty casual eatery, kind of diner-like, so no need to dress up, well, unless you want to, but perogies and sausage can be pretty drippy... The menu offers burgers and other options, but I f you're coming to Uncle Ed's you will most enjoy one of the Ukrainian platters. There are a few plates to choose from that allow you a bit of a choice as to what you get - generally perogies, sausage, cabbage rolls and nalysnyky (cheese filled crepes drenched in cream sauce)...WOW! The service is always great and cheerful. After you've had your fill of Ukrainian food you can pick up some food for home. I've been here a few times and always had the same thing each time - the rib plate which comes with perogies, cheese buns and crepes. I loved it the first time and gone with it every other time I've been there. The ribs are very tender and with all the sides, it's quite the meal, especially for $10.25. I really enjoy the perogies, crepes and cheese buns. I tried the sour cabbage rolls last time, as I found the sweet ones a little boring. They were better. I've always left full, satisfied and didn't really have to spend much. If you're under 50, you're probably bringing the average age of the joint down by quite a bit, but that's fine by me. As they seem to cater to an older crowd, they also close early, at 7 p.m. If you want a great meal in a down-to-earth atmosphere that isn't too hard on your wallet, it would be tough to find a better place than Uncle Ed's. read more
