After an arduous research and more research process of finding a good barber in the city, I finally booked an appointment with a promising one in the far end of the city. Whilst shopping in Emporium however I stumbled across Fleet St - and saw how nice it looked and the barbers looked like they knew what they were doing. Suffice to say I cancelled my other appointment and did a walk in (thank godness for walk ins!) here instead. My barber was friendly, straight to the point and informative. He was telling me about their in house products and took care of me well. (free coffee! Or beer if you wish) That was pretty much one of the best haircut I've had in a LONG time, because you know that your barber is doing a good job and you trust him. He listened to what I was looking for and didn't hesitate to do it or offer suggestions. The price was $49 for a cut which I found a bit pricy, but for a quality cut you get what you paid for. Lastly don't miss out on their fantastic in house products, each one is priced at $28 and they work really well. I will definitely come back on my next Melbourne trip.

I asked for a 1 on the sides and back with just a trim on top since I've been growing my hair out. The guy started out fine, but man, he just kept cutting... and cutting... and cutting. I watched as my hair went from around two inches in length to a half inch on top. I was horrified. I could feel my face go red and I couldn't muster even a fake smile. Not sure what "trim" translates as to you, but according to this guy it means "make me look like I'm going to boot camp." Just a terrible cut. Won't be going back for another mystery cut. I'll have to find another place once my hair grows back. In the meantime, I have a nice collection of beanies that will get plenty of use in the next several months. TL;DR - No matter what you ask for, you're getting whatever cut the "barber" feels like giving.

Run by Lorenzo, who emigrated from the South of Italy around 40 years ago, Lygon Hairdressers does a killer haircut for $20. Not only do you get a great no nonsense cut, but you also get a close shave of your neck and the back and sides of your hair with a razor blade. Lorenzo is a pretty easy-going bloke who likes a good yarn spun. If you are in the mood for a good chat then he's quite talkative. Similarly, if you are not in the mood for small talk then he's happy to keep quiet too. Plenty of regulars here of all ages is testament to the quality of the cut and the professionalism shown. There are no appointments taken so it's done by walk-ins. It's also only a ten-minute walk from Melbourne uni and if you are a student then you can get a cut for $18.
