Fantastic experience renting standup paddleboards for the day on Costa Maya. I highly recommend Undertoe Mexico whether you're new to paddleboarding or have experience. They'll get you set up with a tether, lifejacket, board and paddle. And they'll teach you the basics on using a SUP if you're new to it. The area is protected by a reef so the water is relatively calm and easy to navigate. The only possible downside is there are a lot of patches of seaweed that you will need to avoid. But it's not that big of a deal and if you get stuck it's very easy to get out. Additionally it's situated at Ibiza Sunset so you can rent comfy lounge chairs, many of which are shaded. And you can get $20-25 massages right on the beach, as well as $3 alcoholic drinks. The drinks aren't going to compare to fancy resorts but are more than acceptable for the price. I first came here a few months ago on a running cruise, and spent the day today with my family when our ship stopped at Costa Maya.
