I am an amateur photogapher and enjoy nature photography. We visited the Grizzley and Wolf…read moreDiscovery Center back in February of 2013 and it was truly a marvelous experience! There was considerable snow on the ground when we arrived and late in the afternoon a snowstorm moved in. That didn't stop us from taking pictures either of the two days we were there....and in fact, the snow just made it that much more interesting. We both loved it there - and we were already in our late 60s then! I highly recommend this place for people of all ages - and especially photographers!

Had a few hours and decided to visit the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. Well, let me tell you it…read moredid not disappoint. There is a small fee when entering, which is good for two days. Unfortunately we were only able to go one day but if you have the time, it's a great place to see the Bears and other animals. We started off at the outside movie theater, which is amazing a huge screen with tons of seating. I'm sure it's filled during the summer months. We then made our way over to the Bears where the Ranger gave a speech about how to use bear spray which was very useful. Then they let out to the Bears they search for their food and came around so you can get a close look at them. They have a schedule set up for the times the Bears come out and the Rangers explain who they are and how they feed them. Then we made our way to the wolves and watch them walk around and interact with each other. As we made our way to the otter building, we saw the owls and eagles. The otters exhibit was very nice. It's indoors they put out the food first for the otters and then they have to find it so you see them running around and swimming . They're so adorable. The gift shop was very nice as well. It's a must see.

Remember the old days in high school where you got to use a Bunsen Burner in science lab? Well this…read morepeak is named after the guy who invented it - German chemist Robert Bunsen. He was responsible for early work on volcanic geyser theories and got a mountain named after him for it. When I visited Yellowstone, my goal was to do a hike everyday. This one was probably my favorite. It's relatively short and gives you amazing panoramic views. The hike to Bunsen Peak summit is 2.1 miles (4.2 miles roundtrip). You can get there and back in 3-4 hrs. But you don't have to go all the way to the top to get great views. You can see Mammoth Hot Springs in the far distance within the first hour of the hike. The beginning part of the hike is filled with a lot of trees until you make a turn at Cathedral Rock. Then you hit a lot of switchbacks until you get to the top. You can continue on to Osprey Falls from the summit if you want to make your day a little longer. Parking for Bunsen Peak is right off Grand Loop Road. The lot is pretty small and fills up quick. There is another parking lot across the street and down the road a little bit if you don't mind the short walk. This hike was a lot of fun! I highly recommend you fit it in your day if you are visiting Yellowstone.

And vise versa if you're coming north from Norris. The trailhead starts across the Glen Creek Trailhead. Bunsen Peak is 4.6 miles, roughly 2-3 miles roundtrip. It's an out-and-back hike. You'll gain roughly 1,300 feet in elevation as you're hiking up. At the start of the trail, you hike through a lodgepole pine forest and eventually come to switchbacks that offer nice views of Swan Lake Flats and the Gallatin range. At the top, there is a fire lookout and a registry that you can sign your name in. It's a great, moderate peak hike to do in the area. There's also a bike trail to the top of Bunsen Peak if you're a biker. You can also connect Bunsen Peak to Osprey Falls (another 2-3 miles ish) making it a long day hike out of it. Just continue the trail past the peak and that will take you to Osprey Falls. This is a popular day hike so get there early or parking is going to be difficult. You're in bear country so don't forget to bring your bear spray!
