I had just landed in Portland and was looking to get a haircut before the end of the day. I looked up several spots in downtown and this one looked the most promising. I arrived and asked if walk ins were available. They got someone to cut my hair. I was greeted and asked if I wanted a beer or whiskey. I politely declined. I had my barber that I wanted a come over fade with a hard part on my left. I additionally asked for a beard trim. The only thing she asked of me was what level I wanted on the sides and I said a 2. She didn't ask me anything else and cut away. I was happy with the fade but wasn't happy with the length on top. The amount of trim of my beard was way too much. At times, I felt she didn't know how to proceed. I'm not saying I al dissatisfied all together, but I wasn't exactly happy with it either. My fault partially for not describing exactly what I wanted, however barbers should also ask if the cut is good as they go. The price was way too much. Overall, visit could have gone better. read more

Alright, where to begin? This place is wonderful. Jordan, my Barber, nailed what I was looking for in a cut. He was very understanding, made great conversation, took in the details, made sure I was comfortable and he didn't assume a damn thing. He made me feel confident about letting him know what adjustments needed to be made in my cut and executed them flawlessly. His care and technical proficiency made for very few adjustments as he grasped my vision and offered helpful feedback to make sure that I knew that he knew what I wanted. The ambiance is really nice and the old school meets new school approach of the shop in general makes for a relaxing, yet entertaining experience that shouldn't be missed. My barber has been out of town and so I've had to find alternatives wherever I can, but I wish every experience was as good as this one. I can't recommend Jordan enough! A+! read more

I was visiting from the LA area and was in desperate need of a haircut. I hate getting a cut from anywhere other than my usual barber shop, but I thought I'd give this place a shot. Service here was great! I called to make an appointment and they had plenty of slots to choose from. When I arrived, they took my hat and jacket, and offered coffee and water. The barber (Rick) was easy going and really knew what he was doing. I have really thick hair, so barbers who aren't used to me have a difficult time making my fade really close to skin. After reading the reviews of this place, I decided to book an appointment with Bill Collins to help me get ready for a workplace Christmas party that had a "Mad Men" theme to it. I was warmly welcomed by the staff as soon as I arrived and was offered a drink of whiskey, beer, coffee or water. Bill greeted me and ushered me into the chair. Not only is Bill a great conversationalist, but he's an amazing hairstylist. My previous haircut was much more modern, with the sides short and long on top. Bill worked an hour to transform my hair from modern-day to a 1960's New York City vintage side part. It looks fantastic. He also used a warm towel and shaving cream for a shave of my neck using a straight-razor, gave me a choice of three different aftershaves to apply (which all smell fantastic), and gave me a few practical tips for styling my hair. Overall, I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this barber shop. One of the biggest differences I noticed between Union Barber Company and Modern Man is that Union Barber Company is the lighting. Whereas I felt that Modern Man was a little dark, I really enjoyed the contrast that Union Barber Company has created by painting the walls white and installing lots of lighting. In a way, it says that the barbers at Union Barber Company have nothing to hide - the hair speaks for itself. I highly recommend Bill Collins, and I definitely think that both he and Union Barber Company deserve a five-star rating. I'll be visiting again for my next haircut, without a doubt. read more
