It took about half an hour for Kyle to trim my beard and buzz my head, not because he was slow, but because he took the time and care to do it right. He was able to tame my wiry, uneven beard, getting it down to just the right length, and spent WAY more time fine tuning it than the last chain barbershop I went to. When I got up to leave, he took one more look and had me sit down again to fix an area that was slightly off (which I hadn't even noticed). I live in Seattle and regularly make the 3 hour drive to Portland to have Gus cut my hair. He's that good. He clearly takes pride in what he does and treats it as a craft rather than a job. When I was going to propose to my girlfriend there was nobody else I'd let touch my hair. We don't have a place like Oak in Seattle and we're really a shabbier looking city for it. Also, his straight razor shaves are excellent and the product he sells in store are wonderful. I bought a Speert comb and some Rusk hair product last time I was in and I've been thrilled with them since. I look good. And trust me, it's just that hair that looks good. My previous hair joint went semi under/lost all it's stylists...was a mess. So after a long wait in between cuts I was looking shaggy and downtrodden. Made an appointment with Gus about 4-5 days prior through their web page. Went in and waited about 5 minutes or so for him to finish up he last client then get started on me. Small space, 2 chairs/2 barbers, like the 4 of you are all in one conversation. I really enjoyed that. Gus is a solid guy, nice, super attention to detail. Went over what I wanted before he started and then went to town. I'm really happy with the results. Short, clean, shaved some of the stragglers (even the bad boys in the ears...I'm over 40...just wait guys you'll get them too...). Enjoyed my time there, enjoyed the cut and all for $25. If you want to get a great cut, have good conversation, and ponder over the debate of weather or not Chain of Strength was a good band (I think they are subpar at best), then this is the place to go! read more

It took me years to find the right cut (more specifically, the right cutter) - having suffered gouged wallet and ears at half a dozen "barbers" (yes, even the ones with beer and boobs...). But Gus is a pro. How do I know? Well, I have thick, luxurious hair, that I didn't even realize until he started cutting it. After we met, people started complimenting me on hair, a lot... Now, I'm a demure guy, but I leave his place looking fly and feeling fly, which is really indescribable. I feel incredible after my haircut at Oak! Im new to Portland and finding a new place you can trust to not butcher your hair is always a difficult process. Oak, however, nailed it on the first try. I went there on recommendation from a friend. I'm growing a beard and was looking to have the hair on my head trimmed into a fade so I can grow it long on top. I figured that at best I was going to come away only moderately impressed with a cut but Kyle at Oak did an incredible job. He greeted me when I walked in to the tiny barbershop. It really is small. Only room for two people to get their hair cut and small chairs for three other waiting patrons. I showed him some pictures of what I was thinking about on my phone and he immediately set to work. He made easy, casual conversation the whole time and it felt like the time flew. The cut included a hot lather shave around the neck and ears which was a nice touch. At the end he checked me out using a Square Reader on his iPhone. Other barbershops offer gimmicks like shots of whiskey or movie set ambience, but Oak offers exactly what a barbershop should. Quality service at a fair price. I could not be happier with my haircut and I will definitely be back for maintenance. read more

Gus tells people that "every man should have a barber". He follows that up quickly by saying that it's not a hard sell - he's not saying HE should be your barber - just that every man should have one. I agree with him that everyone should have one, but I disagree about the other part - HE really should be your barber. He's excellent and skilled at what he does, he's a genuine and interesting guy, and the vibe there is great. I wish my hair grew faster so I could go there more. Strange because I only now realize the difference between a good and a bad haircut on my own head. Was in Portland on business and came in for a shave. My barber was really personable and friendly. A truly relaxing experience and when it was done I was pretty darn smooth. I've been getting my hair cut at Oak Barbershop for about three years now. Kyle always does a great job and has an incredible attention to detail- his blending skills can't be beat. Doesn't hurt that both him and Gus are friendly and personable and booking appointments is simple. A couple of years ago, I moved an hour away and have given quite a number of closer barbers a try. Gus was a great guy, I had sent my son in without me and due to his lack of verbal skills beyond a teenage boy grunt these days, he didn't really tell Gus much about what he needed. Result, hair that looked just plain goofy under his assortment of beanies and caps. We called to try and get him a do over and Gus had us in in 24 hours. He cleaned up the bits that made it un hat friendly and had to be forced to take any more tip for his time. Overall, super nice.
