The entrance off Kaierstrasse might cause you to look twice - go through an old passageway, on your right is the cloakroom and up the stairs is the Orange Peel bar itself. Unlike many other places in Frankfurt, this is an easy-going, un-self-conscious venue, with a friendly atmosphere, unostentatious interior and broad mix of clientele. We got there just after 9pm for the Tuesday blues night, and the crowd (thin at 9.15pm, packed out by 11.30pm) was a mix of students, middle-aged types, hipsters and grey-haired blues fans. The booze was pretty cheap and the bar service was quick and friendly. No food - eat before you come! Most importantly, the music was very good. The house band played for an hour, serving up well-executed blues tinged with a hint of funk - one or two standards (like Hoochie Coochie Man, which they nailed) and some rarities. Although the leader is Tommie Harris on drums, the MC'ing was done by the guitarist, who chatted away to the crowd in a mix of German and English (at least half of the band are originally from the US as far as I can tell). The second half of the evening was 'open stage' with all comers welcome to join the house band for a number or two. Fun times; we were sorry we had to leave before the night was over. The crowd were still cheering on the band and the open stage guests, who ranged from OK to excellent. If you bring your guitar, and you know the opening licks for 'Jonny B Goode', then you too might be able to join in ...

die nacht ist jung und wir sind eine gruppe von mehreren leuten, die auch noch verschiedene…read moregeschmäcker haben, was musik und nachtleben angeht... also habe ich den vorschlag gemacht erstmal ein bisserl rockmusik bei apfelwein und bier zu hören... das ganze natürlich live... ab ins spritzehaus... ich mache die tür auf und es kommt mir eine qualmwolke nikotin entgegen... es riecht nach zigaretten, parfums, alkohol, schweiss... es ist laut, weil die menschenmenge mit dem bluesigen rock der band mitgröhlt... eine kneipe nach meinem geschmack... hinter der bar, die von allen seiten erreichbar ist steht ein riese von mensch und schenkt aus... man kann davon ausgehen, dass es hier keinen ärger gibt... hahaha... man muss nur hinter die bar schauen und dann überlegt man sich das noch einmal... bis zur viel zu kleinen bühne, auf die sich die 5 musiker gequetscht haben, kommen wir garnicht, weil davor sich eine viel zu grosse menschenmenge befindet... im verhältnis zur kneipe... wir haben einen riesenspass, denn die musik ist gut, die menschen nett und man bekommt schnell kontakt... allerdings wie so oft im leben, sieht man sich nur einmal... nämlich in der kneipe und dann nie wieder... das spritzehaus hingegen immer wieder...

Small but quaint Jazz spot with open mic and great drinks. They even have small plates you can nosh…read moreon. You can order through the website, and they bring it right to your table in no time. Had a wonderful chill night listening to local artists and soaking in the vibe. We even got to hear some original pieces from the artists. It is recommended to buy tickets ahead of time because it can fill up quickly.
