The experience here is hit or miss. OK, so...I get the bad reviews. I have had a few issues with United here in Dayton as well, but I've also had some great experiences as well. I try to look at the bigger picture...sometimes it's just not "them", but rather a snowball and/or domino effect. However, individuals working for United really need to take a look in the mirror sometimes...would they want to be treated this or that way? That said, the worst thing that happened to us once was our flight being delayed and when I inquired about our connecting flight, I was told all flights were "all" delayed (including Chicago--where our layover was). Then a half hour later (give or take), we were told all flights were leaving on time from Chicago...but here we sit in Dayton waiting on our delayed flight. I asked if they could put us on a different connecting flight since we wouldn't make it since the flight was still leaving late out of Dayton, but they simply wouldn't help me and stated we could make it once we got to Chicago. Reality is, when we landed in Chicago we had 5 mins from the time the seatbelt light was turned off to make our connection, and hello...you know how long it takes to get off the plane! And for extra entertainment, we had to change terminals. I suppose if we were genies we could have made it. Plus, they close the boarding too. So, we missed our connecting flight. Why wouldn't they help us in Dayton? It's beyond me, but I suppose the little guy has a big guy telling them not to. Seemed pretty obvious to me though...they could have at least inquired, but didn't and chose not to help us...period...dot. Of course, the folks in Chicago weren't any better, worse in fact, and I got accused of not inquiring in Dayton to change flights...grrr. I fly into Dayton a lot since I am from Ohio and visit family often. From this said experience I try to book a longer layover because I know they simply will not help if something happens or I take a different airline home. I will say though, they are always friendly when checking in and if you have simple questions they are helpful and always wish you a nice flight. The other area I would like to address is the baggage claim. This cracks me up! Most of the time the planes are the small ones flying into Dayton...you know the ones. Therefore, it doesn't take much to get off those planes and get the luggage to baggage claim. I don't know about you, but I normally gotta tinkle when I get off the plane and I don't take long...then I head to baggage claim. Well...then all I see is my bag in the doorway to the United baggage claim office. I go to get it, thank them, and apologize. I always get the eye roll, sometimes the heavy sigh too, and/or the evil death look. Like dang, they had to do something. I used to say Mother Nature called, but I don't even bother joking anymore since they are just so put out for doing anything. It's funny to me. I like United Airlines, but you can do better United. Just because you are a small airport and may not be as busy...that doesn't mean the flyers/customers matter any less. read more

What the heck is going on with United Airlines?!?!? My last THREE flights have had issues! Currently on a plane in Dayton waiting departure for about an hour now!! Guess why? The plane had a panel that needed repairs!! My flight TO Dayton from Chicago was delayed...my previous flights were delayed and on one I had to listen to 2 flight attendants complain about passengers!! Loud enough for us to hear obviously, they need to be retrained in customer service. Another flight delay with United occurred when the plane had an issue with fueling, which prompted a passenger to want to deplane, which caused yet another delay! Get it together United!! So disappointing!!! UPDATE...WE ARE NOW ON THE RUNWAY WAITING ON CLEARANCE BECAUSE OF WINDS IN CHICAGO ..perhaps if the plane didn't have a panel to repair that took an hour to fix we would have been in Chicago already. read more

I wish I could give no stars!!! This rude lady really pissed me off. I was waiting in front of the counter for about 20 mins. My boyfriend went to the counter over and he was told he couldn't be helped to go back. But he was told in a few words. So finally this lady walks up and starts typing away in the computer. I said nicely "hello, would you be kind enough to help me?". No answer, didn't even acknowledge me. Okay I thought, maybe she didn't hear me. I repeated myself. This time she looked up and said "AFTER I SIGN IN!" She rolled her eyes and proceeded to type again. My blood boiled. Here I am being nice and she just wants to be rude. I understand she needs to sign in but she couldn't answered me politely !!! First of all United has ruined our whole trip. To start off, we missed our flight from Dayton, Ohio to Chicago because they only had 3 people working and we tried to check in on the kiosk and no one ever came to help us after the kiosk said someone would come help us finish checking in. We stood in line for almost an hour!!! Now we have a 6 hour lay over before I get to board a plane to LAX . I'm not happy about being here for 6 hours and then be treated like a piece of crap by a unprofessional united employee. Well finally she decided she was gonna help and she did absolutely nothing but tried to take my boarding pass and tell me to come back for it. My boyfriend and I paid for our seats to be together so that's why we were trying to get that fixed so we can be together. I told her no! I need my boarding why the hell did she want to keep it??? Well she ripped our boarding passes and I had to demand to get them reprinted. Finally she did and as we were walking away from her my boyfriend realized she printed my ticket for LAS VEGAS!!!!! WTH!!! I'm going to LOS ANGELES!!! I'm glad he noticed, I feel like she did that on purpose. I was obviously gonna miss that Vegas flight and then try to board with my boyfriend to Los Angeles I was gonna be in a big mess!! I went back to her, she didn't even apologize for her "mistake". We got our boarding pass and I asked for her name. And she refused to give it to me and asked me to leave because she needed to help customers. On the phone for 40 minutes with no return.  (Have photo with number to prove) call back and can't find my reservation. Agent states that I was a no show yet I'm in the city that I'm trying to confirm. This is after they drop my reservation on the incoming flight which I let go. Now they can't find my reservation. The app doesn't work and I try calling and sit in the phone for 40+ minutes with no resolution. They drop records from their system with no resolution. Follow up: Rep wouldn't assure me I'm checked in and wouldn't direct me how to use to app. Terrible service. read more

The flight was great. It was the Ground support that needs attention. Only 2 ppl on ground crew when we landed. Had to wait 30 mins to get escorted into the gate. By the way, we arrived at 10am. Then when we made it to baggage claim, it was 45 mins before our luggage arrived. When I checked in with the agent, she said they were on their way and would be here in 2 mins. 15 mins later another individual asked her and she gave the same response. Obviously she was lying. This is the part I find most upsetting. Come on. Be honest. Tell us that the bags are late because you don't have enough crew on staff. read more

I booked a flight in March for September (2013). I received a change to itinerary almost every month before the flight. After the second change, I tried to cancel the tickets, so I could re-book with a better airline. Unfortunately the cancellation fee was to high so I was stuck. At this point, I realized I was at the whim of the airline, and the only thing I could do was keep an eye on my departure time, so I at least make whatever flight they finally decided upon. I arrived to the airport and printed my boarding pass for DAY. After I arrived in DEN I went to an agent to print my boarding pass for my next flight. This is when they informed me that there was no flight. After several minutes of searching they found United had scheduled me to depart DEN 2 hours before my flight in was scheduled to arrive. I had checked my itinerary earlier that day however, and it was listed as having a 1.5 hour layover. At no point did the airline inform me that they had made a change that would prevent me from making my layover. In fact, the flight I was originally scheduled to be on, took off while I was sorting everything out with the bad attitudes in customer service. Customer service, of course, had no problem putting all the blame on me. The end result of dealing with these nasty people was that I had to fly all the way to SFO in order to catch a flight into LVS. Before I was finished talking to customer service I asked that they check my return flight to ensure there would be no more problems. After an hour on the phone they were not even going to mention that they had cancelled my return flight entirely. To make matters worse, when I arrived at LVS for my return home, my flight was still not put back in the system. As can be expected, I had problems at my hotel after arriving several hours late. Fortunately, United didn't completely ruin my vacation, though I will be making sure that they never get the opportunity to do so in the future. read more

The worst! Sitting at the gate 25 minutes before scheduled departure and the gate agent gets on public address we have no pilot. Departure will be delayed for 2 hours. So I go to the bar 100 feet from the gate. Then after 30 minutes my phone goes off telling my flight has left the gate. The whole time I am keeping my ears open for further announcements 100 feet from the gate. The flight left without me and 2 others with the same situation. read more

Used terminals to check into my flight with no issues. Very similar process to other airlines that I have used. Only one person working at the counter to accept bags. She was nice and helpful but wonder whether she would get overwhelmed if more than a couple of people had questions or issues with checking in. Only real concern was at the gate. Three people hanging out at the counter; they seemed a little disorganized and more interested in their personal conversation than helping customers. In my case, I asked to verify my seat assignment since it did not appear on my electronic boarding pass. I don't think that the main person there listened to my question since they printed out my boarding passes and handed them to me without explanation. Her actions essentially defeated the purpose of the electronic passes (saving paper) and were not responsive to my request. It ranges from the lies given by gate agents to lost luggage and turning the blame over to the customer. Their slogan talks about the friendly skies well nothing but attitude from United. read more

I had a horrible flight. Had to use the restrooms in the plane and the flight attendant locked the door from inside one hour before the plane lands to LAX airport then it took another 30 mints for a gate to open so the plane can park. During the plane ride I had few requests and the flight attendant didn't even showed up. read more

If I could give it negative stars I would. Seriously a DHC8-200 with no glass cockpit and instruments from the 70s. It gets worse the flight attendant does not speak English, the aircraft is in disarray and the pilot looks as old as a kid in his late teens or early 20s. I just hope we get there safe. Now onto the plane. The plane is aged. The stairs are rusted and salty the plane shakes worst that a commuter flight from the Bahamas to Florida and the flight does not properly pressurize. Ok so not so bad right well it's raining here, cold in DC, and windy. Oh boy! Ok so the good there is lots of legroom. No not really and if they tell you 2A is an exit seat tell them you want another seat cause it is the most cramp seat on the plane. One more thing they need to check the weights if people cause we all had to move seats as they did not properly adjust weight for passengers. Did I say I am scared of this flight. Well when someone is reading this and it's the FAA you will know why. Stay far far away. Do not take United FROM DAY to IAD nonstop. No Bueno!! Update. Hello Phil. Sending a quick message to thank you for your blog, I and my family wife and two sons had a traumatic run in with the woman you described in your blog. We have been trying to get to Germany since last Tuesday. We arrived yesterday. The flight was from Dayton, Ohio to Frankfurt. We had to try on three different days, driving three times to the airport to try to get a flight out of Dayton. I was actually threatened by the women you describe. The wait in the line of only about 15 people to get rebooked was 3.5 hours on each occasion. After I said that the team of two United Agents is too small and incompetant to handle a cancelled flight, Your woman called the police on me, not to talk to her employees in that manner. After the policeman left, not detecting any danger, I requested my checked baggage back. They lost one of the bags. I had to wait longer. Finally the woman in question came over and demanded my baggage receipt. I said "are we talking again" she said "Don't go there or I will search all of your bags" I was dumbfounded!! She then found my bag right behind the door, brought it over and offerred me her hand. I said"I will not give you my hand" She yelled "I'm done!" and walked away. This woman is clearly unstable and in my opinion is a danger to the passengers! I got both names of the Agents. They would not give me her last name, due to company policy. They did say her first name is Nancy. The agents were clearly intimidated by her. I will continue to press on to get the word out to United that this is not a good situation in Dayton. On the heels of the passenger dragging incident we got a taste of the new level of service and attitude that characterizes flying, United and probably others. Every flight I recall in the past few years has been overbooked and volunteers have been requested. Flew out of Dayton last week, overbooked again, volunteers requested again. As my wife and I attempted to board we were stopped while the staff negotiated a seat for another passenger. On two occasions he suggested they let us go ahead since we had assigned seats. I held up my boarding pass and said we had reserved seats to which the United gate person responded curtly, "that doesn't matter!" I said that was a new one to which a flight crew person standing aside grinned at me grimly. Something has to give with this overbooking routine.
