We live on little deer Isle and think it is magnanimous. Please note 8 AM to 4 PM closed Mondays and Thursdays. Recycling is not a thing here on the islands. If you know where recycling occurs please take your recycling home with you. Best to all who know that single used plastic is the scourge of the entire world.

We rented a house on Deer Isle and one of the check out instructions was that we need to take our trash to the transfer station. It was one of the most disgusting places I've ever been to. I grew up in a city that had garbage strikes so smelly trash I can deal with, but this was just horrific. There was a trash compactor that oozed the most vile liquid I've ever smelled, construction material was heaped in a pile at least 30 feet high and they don't recycle anything but returnable items. Really, Deer Isle is great, I don't actually generate a lot of trash, next time I'll bring it home with me.

There's something for everyone. What I'm reviewing is how a spot compares to similar outdoor spots in my personal opinion. Being in nature - and remembering to carry in, carry out - is always five stars! :) Parking? Yes. Loop trail? Yes and no. Well marked signs? Kind of. Element of surprise? No. I feel like the concept of Whaleback Shell Midden's State Historic Site is incredible. But, unfortunately, over time it's perhaps lost it's impressiveness. So, what is a shell midden? It's essentially an enormous pile of discarded shells (primarily oyster) located on the Damariscotta River that were formed, they believe, 1000+ years ago by Indigenous Americans. Originally the Whaleback Midden was more than thirty feet deep (and looked like the back of a whale) -- most of which is gone now since it was used to create chicken feed in the late nineteenth century, or because of erosion from rising sea levels, or because it was simply taken by people (there are lots of signs that kindly ask that you do not do this). As such, there isn't much to see here: there's a nice walk through a field, a lovely walk through a very small but historic apple orchard (the best part when we visited was the earthy smell of summer heat bouncing off the apples), a swinging bench that over looks some of the river, and some really interesting informational boards. But that's about it. Across the river, and completely inaccessible, you can see the Glidden Midden which is the largest mound left in Maine (and, again unfortunately, it's not that big).

You can certainly get some amazing deals on books, highly recommend checking that out some year for sure. This visit my wife and I just browsed the lower floor and it's a very vast selection of well cared for books. They had plenty of non-book offerings as well including a unique section I haven't seen at other libraries. They had a section of these kits (Discovery Kits according to their website) offering a variety of books and activity based things for kids. A cool unique offering that I am sure is a hit. Lastly they often to seem to have events which during our visit they had something going on with The Declaration of Independence. Did not partake but awesome to see them offering it and other events. Great example of what a Public Library can and should be!

You can find the Mount Battier WW1 Memorial Tower at 280 Belfast Rd, Camden, ME 04843 right off of…read moreUS1 (It's called Belfast Rd in this stretch between Camden and Belfast). If you ride up to the summit there's parking near the top to access the Tower. In a recent visit we hiked Camden Hills State Park - the Tower is the prize when you you hike from the trailhead to the summit. The path of least resistance is to drive up and walk up to the summit. On the day we hiked the views were obscured by fog but we came back several days later and drove up for really spectacular views of the coast. The air here is very clean and the surrounding hillside primal - combined with the stone, arched tower it gives you a sense of what it feels like atop similar Medieval edifaces that have survived in Europe. Stairs get you from the arched double-entry to the top - it's a great vantage point to view the surrounding areas. As implied the tower is a historic marker devoted to those who fought or were involved during World War 1, especially local residents. There's more information on various signage and plaques - excellent learning opportunity enhanced by the very solid structure.
