I would like to compliment these guys for doing a great job. The barbers were friendly and welcoming. The place had a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Ezell, who cut my hair, was polite, friendly, patient with my rather inchoate explanation of what I wanted, and did a super job cutting my hair. The price was crazy reasonable--$35 for a cut and beard trim--so I gave him a big tip to say thank you for a great job. I will be coming back regularly! read more

My two sons and I get our hair cut here, and we always leave happy. It's a comfortable, welcoming place, and all the barbers clearly take pride in what they do (and they do it well!). Even on busy days, it never seems like we wait too long, and the cuts would still be worth a wait at twice the price... you'll go away happy. I've used a few other barbershops in the area, but Universal is consistently the friendliest place with the best cuts at a great price (come prepared -- it's cash only). I have been coming to this barber shop for years. It was very near my home when I lived in College Park. Kwame is the owner and my barber. Now that I am in Downtown Silver Spring I can't seem to stop coming. Now I bring my 71 year young dad. Kwame is fast and accurate and doesn't awesome job on dad. They have a big screen TV and great conversation. Business, Politics, Relationships, Family or Friends...no topic is off limits so far. Went here to get my haircut after waiting an extremely long time, letting my hair get into a semi large fro state. I was not disappointed. At first I was nervous because I am used to getting my haircut by the same person. I was in the chair shortly after arriving and the barber was really friendly and knew what he was doing. Although the process took a large amount of time (a little over an hour) I was pleased with the results. I had a fresh fade and my hair was even all around. I just went on a whim to get my hair cut here after reading the reviews. I got there and Kwame got me right in the chair. He listened well to what I wanted and delivered. This is the first time my hair has been cut exactly how I wanted since I've been away from my barber in Mississippi. I still come here even though I've lived in Baltimore for five years. I make the schlep because typically if you come on the weekends, there's little to no wait -- the wait is what I dislike about most other barber shops in the universe. The longest I've ever waited for a cut here is 10 minutes, so it's easy to fit in other plans into your schedule. They focus on black hair, but I do see other ethnicities, minority and non come in from time to time. The barbers are often hilarious, bantering about just about everything, in that barber argument style -- ridiculous assumptions and premises leading to insane conclusions. Good fun. They take their time with your hair and are attentive. Cuts are $20, and shape-ups $10. read more

I have been coming to this barbershop for just over 10 years. All the barbers are friendly, and have good clientele. Unlike some shops where you see certain barbers pulling the majority of the cuts, and others waiting around, these guys all carry their share of cuts. The mood in the shop is always a good one, they're always joking and having a good time, and even if you have to wait for a cut some times the conversation can pass the time quicker. They are strict on profanity, so its a good place to bring kids. No rush cuts even on a friday, expect to be in the chair at least 30 - 35 minutes, 45 if the wait is low. I've seen many barbers come and go. Sometimes they come back, but the main group of guys are still here from when i first started coming here in 2003. It's the closest thing I've known to the barbershop i went to growing up, and thats a huge compliment, and one of the main reasons i keep coming back. I have lived all over pg county, and even out to howard county, and haven't changed shops. Nothing better then a barbershop with passionately opinionated barbers...lol Sports, politics, weather, food, culture. You're sure to get a good laugh in this place, and most importantly a great cut. I came here for the first time last week and it was a good cut. I walke in and sat right down without an appointment no problem. James cut my hair and did an excellent job. I was't very specific with my instructions, but he knew what to do and I walked out looking good. This is a cash-only establishment which I didn't realize, but luckily there is an ATM in the neighboring convenience store, and they are very relaxed about letting you go and come back. read more

This is a great shop overall from the service to the atmosphere, I felt welcomed all the staff that was working that day were having a great time while on the job and I got a great fade, I went during a weekday one hour before the business closed I waited a couple of minutes for my turn. read more

I've been coming to this barber shop since I was in elementary school, and I'll be a junior in college next fall. For the rest of my life, unless I end up living in a state far away from Maryland, I will never go to another barber shop. This one is the best. All of the barbers give perfect cuts every time I go.
