Chris and Fernando run a really great barber shop! They're proof-positive that when you have quality professionals that also happen to be nice people providing finely-detailed, individualized work in a calming, clean, convenient, environment, even your deepest hair fears go away. I was looking for a new barber after trying a few others that were either too far, too fast, or too overpriced, so my doubts were high. But I figured I'd give a new small business near home a try, and goodness, am I thrilled I did! I called to let them know I was coming (but they welcome walk-ins warmly - see what I did there :-) Chris welcomed me as if we knew each other for years. As I sat in his clean, comfortable barber chair, I did not have to scream over loud music nor try to grab his attention away from the game on ESPN. His focus was on me, on my haircut needs, and soon enough, on me as a human being. He asked key questions to begin the job that I hoped he would do, without judging any of my answers or hesitations. He gave me some great options both before the cut and during the cut as he began to do his magic. So about the cut. He uses scissors, shavers, and razors... for the ears, around the hairline, to even out the sideburns, and ends with a delicious hot shave around the neck. He started and completed my sides with a "1" setting because that's what my clueless self asked for. Once done, he asked me if I wanted it lower. Yep, I became that guy. He happily and quickly cut down my sides with the "1/2" razor, and things looked beautiful (at least to me). He made the groove along the top right side of my hair to give me that clean, professional side split. He even offered to trim down and shape up my eyebrows and ears (I admit I had ignored my ear hairs... ya got me!). I left Chris' barber chair and University Barber Shop feeling so good about the experience and really looking forward to my return visit in a couple of weeks. My hair looked awesome without any gel or pomade (Chris offered, but I told him I was going right home and would just wash it off). Awesome without any gel! That never happens to me. Ever. Chris has been cutting hair for a dozen or so years. He and the rest of the barbers at University Barber Shop seem to get along really well with each other (which sure beats some of the "Mean Girls"-like barber shop I've been to before. They have older barbers for the picky. They even have a Colombian lady who, I'm sure, will cut women's hair to be as fabulous as hers. They've only been around as a business for a couple of months, but truly deserve to be very successful. They're a great new addition to the barber scene in Tamarac. You won't be disappointed. One of the OWNERS cut my hair and I showed them multiple photos of the type of hairstyle I was going for. All dude did was a subpar fade on the sides (that aren't even aligned) and cut half my hair off on the top and called it a day. No styling, no texturing, nothing. Ended up paying $30 for one of the worst haircuts ive ever gotten. Even if I caught him on a bad day I can't believe he wouldn't take accountability and stood there after the cut telling me it looked good. read more

I feel like I need another haircut already and it's only been a week. I'm really put off by the fact that they advertise senior's cuts for 10 bucks but they have a 13 dollar minimum to use a debit card (which I didn't see posted anywhere prominently). But that's OK. Walk ins are welcome needs to be removed as this is certainly far from the case. It should read, 'Appointments Only'. I suggest that nobody makes a mistake and walks into this barbershop without an appointment. I was treated so poorly and literally humiliated today at this barbershop. I waited patiently for 20 minutes and then one of the two barbers clients were done they seated me in the chair, put tissue on my neck, draped me with robe, asked me how I'd like my hair cut, and then another person walked in (and this is when it took a bad turn). The barber said 'oh shit, I forgot I had an appointment'. He actually kicked me out of the chair. Who does that!?!? The most unprofessional barber without any regard for someone's feelings, that's who! Oh, and this guy is the owner of the barbershop. You lost a good customer today and I plan on leaving this review wherever else I see your business listing online. I've already told a handful of folks from the neighborhood what happened and everybody's mouths dropped wide open. read more

Can anyone tell me if South Florida has a custom or unwritten rule about tipping barbers? I have been going to University Barbershop (UB) since moving to here. Prior to that, I lived in 6 different states, and the subject never came up. The last time at UB, I was asked not to return, and tips were briefly mentioned after the cut. The front window advertises "$10 Children Seniors, Mon-Thu" in big bold letters. I am retired and on Medicare, and have paid according to the window. I have always paid whatever barbers charge. At UB I noticed the barber's attitude worsening with me. In my first trip to UB after it re-opened I was told an appointment was needed. When I arrived for my appointment, a walk-in was in the chair and was taken before me. After my cut, I was charged $15. The barber said all appointments are $15. I suggested he change the advertised price on the window. He almost agreed, but then mentioned tips. He then said "this is not working out" though he did not say what 'this' is. Just as well, I would not know how much to pay. read more
