My company has had our Christmas Dinner Party for several years at the University Club. With a group of about 60-65 guests, we have always received great food and great service. Jessica and Kelly always makes sure that they have the details are done to perfection. Even during Covid they did a great job. The University did our first Christmas party 23 years ago. We chose to try several other venues and none of them compared to the University Club. And the Thanksgiving buffet is fantastic!! read more

My club executive board meets here monthly before lunch, and then we order off the menu. I enjoy the food each time, and the view is nice.

Great place for a large group to gather for dinner. We were here for a group dinner event. The room was able to nicely facilitate speakers. We enjoyed a buffet dinner. The servers were circulating the room and were very attentive. They brought coffee and were quick to clear empty plates. The view (this is the 17th floor) is lovely. I would recommend this place for a group event. Not sure if you have to be a member or if this is just a restaurant for hire. It was a great evening. It's always a treat to be able to go out with my accounting department to tour a place then head out to lunch. It's an even better treat when I'm a guest of a "member" and the lunch venue is the University Club on the 17th (top) floor of the University Tower. First, I want to say, I'm slightly irritated by the fact that the place is so exclusive because I think they could do a much better volume of business by opening up their doors to "non-members." So, the only way to get in the door is to know somebody who's a member and be their guest. Okay, my griping is over. We were greeted with a pleasant formality, making sure our host's name was on the "list" and then everything turned strictly to pleasantries and introductions to our server while we were being seated. The buffet was extraordinarily displayed. Today's soup was not quite a gumbo (it was missing the Okra) but it was close - a chicken and sausage tomato based temptation that when given into, satisfies the taste buds with just the right amount of spice, the right amount of sausage, oh heck it was pretty darn good! Next on the buffet was rolls, which I skipped due to the server already giving us each a roll at our places. Next was steamed vegetables - carrots and broccoli - very nice color and very tasty. The rice pilaf was perfect, the chicken florentine was very nicely done with spinach leaves and feta cheese and the blacked catfish in cream sauce was a heck of a lot better tasting than the bullheads I used to go fishing for 20+ years ago. Desserts - choices - chocolate bomb cake? chocolate Kahlua cake? carrot cake? Key Lime pie? Sorbet, homemade ice cream or finally - the fruit tart. That's right, I had the fruit tart - very fruity, not really very tart, but still - yum!!! I whipped out my phone and had to take a couple pics of the desserts on the table. The club manager came by while I was taking the pics and said "Wow - you're taking pictures of the food, we must be doing something right!" It's not quite "as good as it gets," but at the end of the day, it's pretty darn good. A solid 4 1/2 starts here. BTW, if you work at the University Tower building, they will deliver lunch to you and cater within the building. However, if you want outdoor seating, you may have to try to find some roof access, and that might be frowned upon. read more

This is the second time I'm come here for an event. It's a great view over Durham and really lovely when the sky is clear. The staff was attentive waiting on us, but there was a lot of yelling coming from the kitchen. The first time we were here a couple years ago the food was fantastic. This time not so much, which was pretty disappointing! Same buffet menu as before, but the two entrees and veggies were very dried out.. The best thing on the buffet was the salad, the dressings, dessert, and the mashed potatoes. I sure hope the chef or management reads these reviews because there needs to be an improvement! read more

I have been a member of the club for years and enjoying it greatly, and supporting during the COVID time , and it is so sad to see how place has declined recently under new management... It got intellectually sterile ...and food as always has not been good and overpriced .... club meeting I attended in near past had nobody in the room...free breakfast was gone.....I miss my colleagues from the past, our intellectual conversation and discussion .....they left...some to The Reading Club .. view is impactable and will stay like that, act of nature ..please ask waiters if they are getting 20 % of service charge when they ask for tips... ....and look how management reacts... give them tips in cash as they silently requested in the past.. read more

The elevator doors open at the 17th floor of one of the most well-known, well-scoffed, beautiful buildings in North Carolina. Smooth out any wrinkles in your blouse--this is the kind of place people will notice if anything is amiss. Dark wood paneling greets you from foot to ceiling. The maitre'd greets you with kind eyes and a nice tie. Isn't he handsome? The barkeep delivers two perfect negronis. The walls are the same wood and tall windows yieldin panoramic views of the green town--it's been a hot summer, the leaves will turn soon. I guess the crowd's a little stuffy. But they're quiet, and there's so much else to enjoy. read more

We have photographed two weddings here, a bit different from each other, but very excellently executed both times. Jessica & her team manage setup, the overall look of an event, and the flow of guest activity without a hitch. Having separate spaces for each section of a wedding reception--cocktails at the bar, the dining room for dinner, a dance floor--creates an upscale event feel and flow. The food has always been excellent, staff helpful and courteous. Plus, nowhere else in Durham can beat those views! Highly recommend! read more

We had our son's rehearsal dinner here on October 18, 2019. We could not have been more pleased with the food, service, and staff who waited on us. Jessica was more than accommodating to our every request. I had an hour social prior to the meeting and the hor'derves were served in plenty. The tables for dinner were set up beautifully. They even had all the name cards done and sorted by tables. We had a sit down dinner and everyone enjoyed their meals! The staff were attentive and even brought the wine to the tables during dinner so noone had to get up once seated. And as I requested, soda, tea, and coffee were all provided to those who wanted it. The staff even plated and served our brought in dessert! All 90 people who attended left happy! And the cost was reasonable! The view from the 17th floor is beautiful and I can truely give an A-1 recommendation to this venue! read more

The University Club is an amazing venue! My wife and I had our wedding reception at the club and from day one Shaun and Kelly were a pleasure to work with. Many venues we visited were stuffy and wanted us to do things their way. This was definitely not the case at University Club. They were the most laid back, easy to work with representatives we encountered in our entire wedding planning! The venue itself is top notch. Located on the top floor of the building, it offers an impressive view. The food is spectacular as well. From the Kobe Beef sliders to the Shrimp Ceviche...we couldn't have been happier. I would not hesitate to hold any event there again. They host special events often that are equally as good. Their Valentine's Day dinner provided an exquisite four course meal that left us stuffed and satisfied. Fantastic venue, fantastic food, even better people! What more can I say! read more

We attended the Mother's Day brunch. SPECTACULAR!! The buffet was loaded with excellent salads, breakfast or lunch entrees, your choice. I particularly enjoyed the smoked salmon. My friend had her rehearsal dinner here over the weekend. It was a great view of the campus. The service was very friendly and the decor is very upscale. The cocktails and appetizers were on point. All of the dinner options sounded delicious but I went with a steak and potatoes. The salad and creme brulee dessert were both very good as well. As a member of Capital Society for over 20 years I have been a guest at many reciprocal clubs. I made reservations and the club was having a buffet. Not a huge fan of buffets I found this one to be very good. Prime Rib, shrimp, roast turkey and many salads and sides AND a local winery for tastes or purchases. Desserts were made in-house and quite tasty. Only caveat is that they need to bill my account and not insist on paying at their site....that is the reason I pay dues, for easy access at any location. read more

This is such a nice place to visit. I've been there twice now, the last time being for an art show. The food was excellent. The view superb. I held my husbands surprise 40th birthday party here. The venue was wonderful, food delicious and customer service excellent. I worked with Melissa Sayre to organize my event. She is a gem...not a detail was missed. The beverage manager and staff had all details worked out that night even down to my husbands favorite drink. My guest felt very welcomed and well attended to during the entire event. You can not beat the views on the 17th floor. The entire staff made my husbands birthday party an event to remember. I did not have to worry about a thing they really worked through the details. I would recommend the University Club for all of your event needs. read more
