    Elephant ear

Still giving Guglhupf four stars mainly for the relaxing vibe and beautiful atmosphere with all the plants, but lowering the bakery stars to a 3.7 for the quality and price. I still love the fruit tart - good texture and mix of sweet and slightly tart. The macaron and elephant ear was pretty good. The macaron had good flavor and texture. Elephant ears tasted good, though I would've preferred more layers and more of a crisp. Lemon poppy danish was the standard danish. I sadly wasn't as impressed by the cream puff and eclair dough. I know they make their pastries fresh every day but on a busy Saturday at 10:30 am, the eclair dough didn't taste fresh and was not as light and airy as I hoped. Cream puff was ok. The dough was also meh. BUT the focaccia was amazing!! It was on-sale day old bread but had great flavor and was soft on the inside and slightly crispy in the outside. All in all, for what's in the area and restaurant's atmosphere, it's still worth the trip.

I have loved Guglhupf's impressive bakery for years and finally got to try their restaurant over the weekend - WOW, I have been missing out!! They don't take reservations, so you wait in a queue to order at the counter. (Clipboards with menus are available throughout the line.) Once you order, you are given a number and can seat yourself either indoors or outdoors. We asked for appetizers first and received our bread service and brezels very quickly. The range of breads and the beautifully salted butter were a crowd favorite, while a pickier member of our party focused in on the delicious pretzels. I also received my drink, the seasonal Hugo Rose, at the same time - it was so light and refreshing & the perfect complement to a spring evening. Soon after we finished our appetizers, our plates were cleared and food was brought to the table. Two of our party ordered the schnitzel, an absolutely massive portion of perfectly breaded meat. Two more ordered the grilled bratwurst sandwich, which was absolutely spectacular both with and without sauerkraut. Finally, we tried their pigs in a blanket. Everything was beautifully prepared, warm, and delicious, not to mention generously portioned. While it took me a while to finally make it to the restaurant, I won't go so long without it again. My only caveat is to get there early, as parking is limited (and competitive!) Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys German food, outdoor dining, and beautifully mixed drinks.

Despite the 15-30 minute wait in line on the weekends, we keep coming back to Guglhupf for a few reasons. First, the seating just can't be beat! You can sit outside or inside, and there's tons of seating for both. This makes it great for large parties, and it's easy to pull together some tables for enough seating. Second, you can order some more coffee or a pastry from the barcode at your table. Amazing! Saves the servers time and saves you time. Third, they have some fantastic vegan options. The vegan breakfast sandwich with shakshuka is incredible. And the spicy fried tofu sandwich is one of my favorite vegan sandos (i will come here just for this sando). Overall, a Durham staple that shouldn't be missed. Fantastic for meeting someone for lunch last minute, large parties, or groups of people who like to linger over their food (you won't be hurried out).

No-frills, grab a clipboard with photocopied menu pages, get on line, order at the widow, get a number, find a table, they bring your order. Friendly and engaging staff. Interesting menu... not as German as I expected, but very good. Good beer menu, with some really good options. Stopped in for brunch, which had a more limited menu. I think it's worth trying again for the more interesting dinner menu. Parking was the biggest challenge.

Ambiance of the restaurant is nice, i enjoyed the outdoor seating. It feels whimsical. The food is not for me, the seasonal honey bear latte was yummy though. Not a lot of flavor but im not an expert on german food... The service was a toss up depending on the person. The man who took our order was nice! The lady in the bakery was not! Its very busy! We came early and there was still a decent line.

Set up beer-garden style with most of the seating as umbrella tables outside. There is a convenient box of menus to look at while waiting in line. You order at the counter and they give you a number-flag to take to your table for the staff to bring the food out to you when it's ready. Nice, fresh food. Decent portions. Very relaxed environment that is family-friendly.

I regret not visiting this place before, that's how awesome this cozy, European inspired and lush brunch place is. The wait line was long but was moving super fast. We ordered at the counter, and sat at any available place. We chose outside since the weather was warm. We ordered their croissant and scrambled egg sandwich with fruit, chicken salad sandwich with coleslaw and a side of fries. In their bakery items we ordered their cream puffs and chocolate croissant. In beverages we ordered their latte and milchkaffe. Everything tasted so comforting and soul warming, the chocolate croissant was buttery and super delicate, cream puff was so good, I can go back just for that!! Chicken salad sandwich was hearty and flavour full. Our coffees tasted strong but aromatic. They do have an exclusive inside store just for the bakery items and everything their looked scratch made and decadent. Strongly recommended for food, place and vibe.

Had the seasonal omelet, lamb doner, and pork schnitzel. All were great and flavorful. The line outside moved pretty quick and the service was helpful. We loved being able to sit outside and get some nice sunshine in late March.

Beautiful breakfast spot located in Durham; must sit outside to really enjoy the ambiance! Lots of flowers and trees, and plenty of tables and overhead heaters for when it's cold out. Usually a longggg line, and can be challenging to find parking, but worth it. The line moves pretty fast! The 3 page brunch menu (served until 3 pm), includes several different flavors of coffees, cocktails, teas and wine, pastries, egg items (scrambled eggs, omelettes, croissant sandwiches, pancakes), small plates (overnight oats, granola, bread), large plates (kippered salmon, pork schnitzel), salads, sandwiches, and daily specials from the bake shop! Lots of vegan, vegetarian, and wheat free options on the menu. AND homemade healthy dog treats available at the window. The sweet potato scone was scrumptious- chunks of sweet potato, fluffy (but crisp out edges) bread, topped with cinnamon. The smashed avocado Benedict- smashed avocado, poached eggs, tomato confit, and smoked paprika hollandaise, on their homemade brioche bread, was absolutely delicious. The sauce and the bread made the entire sandwich. Note: they have a special Thanksgiving menu, including tons of delicious baked goods (apple strudel, sourdough, apple bread, fruit tarts, cakes, bread & rolls, pastries.) Will definitely be back to this bakery & restaurant!

Schweine Schnitzel with kasespätzle and salad

I finally made it to try Guglhupf for dinner since I've heard so much about it. It's a hike for me so I had to set some time aside for this visit. I went on a Saturday night right before closing and it was fairly empty with easy parking. The restaurant was adorably decorated with heaters throughout the patio for cold evenings. I got the pork schnitzel with kasespätzle and salad. The schnitzel was pretty good; I loved the fresh lemon to squeeze on top. The kasespätzle was also very good. It did taste fresh like it was made in house. It's not overwhelmingly cheesy. The salad was so fresh, delicious, and had a nice vinegar tang. It was a large portion so I had enough leftover for the next day's lunch. Overall, good quality and everything was tasty. Sadly, the bakery was closed during my visit, but I'd like to try it another time. It was fun to try some German cuisine and work on my German pronunciation.

This is both a restaurant and a bakery that has what seemed to be largely outdoor seating. Of course it's unlikely to be terribly cold in North Carolina. I came for a baked goods rather than dining in, and walked out with numerous indulgent, pastries, and a loaf of bread that was sliced for me. The flavors were rich and contained enough bitterness and soreness to contrast the more indulgent aspects of most of my items. The entire spread disappeared at the hands of the people that I brought it for, which was not a small feat. I would like to come back for the restaurant, which had a lot more for special dietary needs that most German restaurants do

I'm so upset that I moved away before discovering this GEM of a restaurant. Wow. Wow. Wow. Will absolutely be a go to every time I visit! Food - one word - stunnin'. Truly perfect. Our party tried many dishes from a tofu sandwich to a salmon salad to a Benedict with avocado and the vegan breakfast sandwich. There was no flaw whatsoever. The flavors and textures were spot on. Pictured - Blueberry maple muffin (center), chocolate apricot scone (top left), earl grey orange scone (top right), almond croissant (bottom left) and cinnamon schnecke (bottom right) Service - fast friendly and efficient. You order at the counter and take a numbered tag to your choice of seat. Everyone was friendly and lovely to interact with Ambiance - This is my personal style of restaurant. Very open. Doesn't feel like you're in a city at all. Quite while still bustling. Just lovely all around. TL;DR - I will be back. Everything is delicious. Go here. Be happy.

What I recommend: The homemade pastries Overall, this is a great breakfast and brunch spot, especially for the scenery. It's a beautiful place to sit and enjoy your morning, but be warned that on weekends it gets extremely packed. They don't take reservations and operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so the line can easily stretch 20 to 30 people deep and parking can get hectic. The food is very aesthetic, reasonably priced, and decent overall, though I do think some dishes could use a bit more flavor. The ambience more than makes up for it, and the homemade pastries are always a nice treat after breakfast. Definitely a good spot for a relaxed morning brunch.

Been here for brunch. Do they actually wait the table during dinner rather than having us order at the register?

Yes, will have to wait to be seated

What's the largest reservation they'll take? Do they have a private room?

My company had our team dinner there. It was at least 20 people. They sat us upstairs in an open area. Not sure if they have a 'full private' room though. Might be worth a call seeking 'full' private

We also orders charred jalapeno & sweet corn hushpuppies and frickles as an appetizer. I was VERY excited about my food. Y'all...the only thing that impressed me were the Frickles. Everything else was distinctly underwhelming. I also ordered Blackberry Betta Have My Money which was not that great. My SiL ordered a espresso martini that they said didn't come from a mix but she said it tasted like it was. The bathrooms were very clean. The decor and the vibe were great. Cute even. I really enjoyed that part of it. After dropping off our food, we never saw our waitress again unless we flagged her down for drink refills. It was especially frustrating since there was automatic gratuity added. And since the place wasn't that busy, it felt like she didn't feel the need to earn her automatic tip. Overall I was disappointed in my birthday dinner. I won't be coming back here.

We've been to Aaktun in Durham multiple times for both breakfast and dinner, and it's honestly become one of our favorite spots. I'm Peruvian and grew up with Peruvian cuisine, so seeing lomo saltado -- a classic Peruvian dish -- on the menu immediately made me happy. Having also grown up in Mexico and lived in places like Miami, I really appreciate what they're doing with the menu: a modern, delicious take on Latin flavors that feels creative without losing what makes those cuisines special. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. You walk in thinking it's a stylish little coffee shop, then head toward the back and the whole place opens up -- gorgeous bar, tropical touches, cozy alcove seating, really cool vibe. One time we went with friends for a special dining experience they were offering, and it was excellent. The food, drinks, and whole experience were made even better by Fernando, the manager, who has always been incredibly warm, helpful, and accommodating. Highly recommend Aaktun for breakfast or dinner. Still haven't made it there for lunch somehow, but at this point we'd be shocked if it wasn't great too. La comida, las bebidas y toda la experiencia fueron aún mejores gracias a Fernando, el gerente, que siempre ha sido súper amable, atento y servicial. "Part Dos - Mostly great, with a few exceptions"…read more Food temp is major in my book. While many of the food options were hot, several were not, and I believe that impacted the overall dining experience. We ordered classic breakfast and jerk chicken lunch options. For drinks: Cappuccino and Mango Refreshers. The good: (1) Fried rice - which accompanied the jerk chicken (served hot). While simple, the slightly earthy and bitter (in the best way possible) from the braised/steamed baby bok choy perfectly accompanied the earthy mushroom, and complex soy inspired fried rice. So good - this could be a vegan or meat side entree unto itself - IMO. (2) Scrambled Eggs - If you enjoy large curds of gently scrambled eggs - this is for you. While we enjoyed the remaining options for portion size and flavor, we did note that the temperature was cool to mid - which impacted overall flavor. Jerk Chicken: we understand this is a jerk inspired interpretation. With that being said, the most interesting flavor was limited to the crispy skin. Perhaps the chicken was immersed in a salt brine and basted with a jerk flavoring? We loved the white (perhaps mayo based sauce), and accompanied pickled red onion. But baby, the food temp. Yucca fries - if you're unfamiliar - are the baby of a green plantain and white potatoes. While good, they were not hot. Maybe could have benefited from a unique sauce? Food service good. But the biggest miss was the cheese hash browns and Mango Refresher. Hash brown (cheese) room temp, and tough - Mango Refresher - too tart and not worth the cost. As far as ambience: Customers were Hip, sexy, multi ethnic , and included old and young. We loved our waiter. Overall, a little disappointing especially considering we loved our first coffee breakfast visit so much. Not sure if it was an off day or we just prefer other menu options. However, we'd definitely visit again! Brunch/lunch: 4.2
