[[HIGHLIGHT]]Still giving Guglhupf four stars mainly for the relaxing vibe and beautiful atmosphere with all the plants[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], but lowering the bakery stars to a 3.7 for the quality and price. I still love the fruit tart - good texture and mix of sweet and slightly tart. The macaron and elephant ear was pretty good. The macaron had good flavor and texture. Elephant ears tasted good, though I would've preferred more layers and more of a crisp. Lemon poppy danish was the standard danish. I sadly wasn't as impressed by the cream puff and eclair dough. I know they make their pastries fresh every day but on a busy Saturday at 10:30 am, the eclair dough didn't taste fresh and was not as light and airy as I hoped. Cream puff was ok. The dough was also meh. BUT the focaccia was amazing!! It was on-sale day old bread but had great flavor and was soft on the inside and slightly crispy in the outside. [[HIGHLIGHT]]All in all, for what's in the area and restaurant's atmosphere, it's still worth the trip.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Stop by for a quick snack. It was me and a friend first time, we are from out of town. We tried to check out what they had. While doing so, I gentle man there kept looking at us two and feels like he was rushing us also. Again this was my first time here so I wanted to see what there was to offer. I would had love to buy more then what I order but the rushing made me felt some anxiety of not knowing what I wanted within let's say a minute or two. The pretzel was delicious and the cheese that was use had awesome flavor. Parking was a mess to get in and out. Not sure if I be back if I'm ever in town. 3 stars mainly for the bakery item I bought was delicious.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Great outdoor atmosphere.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The line is long but moves quickly. Enjoyed the schnitzel and got a scone to go from the bakery. A great way to spend Sunday brunch.

I have loved Guglhupf's impressive bakery for years and finally got to try their restaurant over the weekend - WOW, I have been missing out!! They don't take reservations, so you wait in a queue to order at the counter. (Clipboards with menus are available throughout the line.) [[HIGHLIGHT]]Once you order, you are given a number and can seat yourself either indoors or outdoors.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We asked for appetizers first and received our bread service and brezels very quickly. The range of breads and the beautifully salted butter were a crowd favorite, while a pickier member of our party focused in on the delicious pretzels. I also received my drink, the seasonal Hugo Rose, at the same time - it was so light and refreshing & the perfect complement to a spring evening. Soon after we finished our appetizers, our plates were cleared and food was brought to the table. Two of our party ordered the schnitzel, an absolutely massive portion of perfectly breaded meat. Two more ordered the grilled bratwurst sandwich, which was absolutely spectacular both with and without sauerkraut. Finally, we tried their pigs in a blanket. Everything was beautifully prepared, warm, and delicious, not to mention generously portioned. While it took me a while to finally make it to the restaurant, I won't go so long without it again. My only caveat is to get there early, as parking is limited (and competitive!) Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys German food, outdoor dining, and beautifully mixed drinks.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]We went to the outside patio to eat today and everything was great as always.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We had the vegan breakfast sandwiches, which is just egg and a meatless patty on their fresh baked bread. We also took the opportunity to visit the on site bakery as well and went home with some multigrain bread and pretzels. Classic German flavors. The bakery service was amazing as well.

Despite the 15-30 minute wait in line on the weekends, we keep coming back to Guglhupf for a few reasons. [[HIGHLIGHT]]First, the seating just can't be beat! You can sit outside or inside, and there's tons of seating for both. This makes it great for large parties, and it's easy to pull together some tables for enough seating.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Second, you can order some more coffee or a pastry from the barcode at your table. Amazing! Saves the servers time and saves you time. Third, they have some fantastic vegan options. The vegan breakfast sandwich with shakshuka is incredible. And the spicy fried tofu sandwich is one of my favorite vegan sandos (i will come here just for this sando). Overall, a Durham staple that shouldn't be missed. Fantastic for meeting someone for lunch last minute, large parties, or groups of people who like to linger over their food (you won't be hurried out).

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambiance of the restaurant is nice, i enjoyed the outdoor seating. It feels whimsical.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food is not for me, the seasonal honey bear latte was yummy though. Not a lot of flavor but im not an expert on german food... The service was a toss up depending on the person. The man who took our order was nice! The lady in the bakery was not! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Its very busy! We came early and there was still a decent line.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

No-frills, grab a clipboard with photocopied menu pages, get on line, order at the widow, get a number, find a table, they bring your order. Friendly and engaging staff. Interesting menu... not as German as I expected, but very good. Good beer menu, with some really good options. Stopped in for brunch, which had a more limited menu. I think it's worth trying again for the more interesting dinner menu. Parking was the biggest challenge.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Set up beer-garden style with most of the seating as umbrella tables outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There is a convenient box of menus to look at while waiting in line. You order at the counter and they give you a number-flag to take to your table for the staff to bring the food out to you when it's ready. Nice, fresh food. Decent portions. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very relaxed environment that is family-friendly.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Beautiful breakfast spot located in Durham; must sit outside to really enjoy the ambiance! Lots of flowers and trees, and plenty of tables and overhead heaters for when it's cold out. Usually a longggg line, and can be challenging to find parking, but worth it. The line moves pretty fast! The 3 page brunch menu (served until 3 pm), includes several different flavors of coffees, cocktails, teas and wine, pastries, egg items (scrambled eggs, omelettes, croissant sandwiches, pancakes), small plates (overnight oats, granola, bread), large plates (kippered salmon, pork schnitzel), salads, sandwiches, and daily specials from the bake shop! Lots of vegan, vegetarian, and wheat free options on the menu. AND homemade healthy dog treats available at the window. The sweet potato scone was scrumptious- chunks of sweet potato, fluffy (but crisp out edges) bread, topped with cinnamon. The smashed avocado Benedict- smashed avocado, poached eggs, tomato confit, and smoked paprika hollandaise, on their homemade brioche bread, was absolutely delicious. The sauce and the bread made the entire sandwich. Note: they have a special Thanksgiving menu, including tons of delicious baked goods (apple strudel, sourdough, apple bread, fruit tarts, cakes, bread & rolls, pastries.) Will definitely be back to this bakery & restaurant!

Schweine Schnitzel with kasespätzle and salad

I finally made it to try Guglhupf for dinner since I've heard so much about it. It's a hike for me so I had to set some time aside for this visit. I went on a Saturday night right before closing and it was fairly empty with easy parking. The restaurant was adorably decorated with heaters throughout the patio for cold evenings. I got the pork schnitzel with kasespätzle and salad. The schnitzel was pretty good; I loved the fresh lemon to squeeze on top. The kasespätzle was also very good. It did taste fresh like it was made in house. It's not overwhelmingly cheesy. The salad was so fresh, delicious, and had a nice vinegar tang. It was a large portion so I had enough leftover for the next day's lunch. Overall, good quality and everything was tasty. Sadly, the bakery was closed during my visit, but I'd like to try it another time. It was fun to try some German cuisine and work on my German pronunciation.

This is both a restaurant and a bakery that has what seemed to be largely outdoor seating. Of course it's unlikely to be terribly cold in North Carolina. I came for a baked goods rather than dining in, and walked out with numerous indulgent, pastries, and a loaf of bread that was sliced for me. The flavors were rich and contained enough bitterness and soreness to contrast the more indulgent aspects of most of my items. The entire spread disappeared at the hands of the people that I brought it for, which was not a small feat. I would like to come back for the restaurant, which had a lot more for special dietary needs that most German restaurants do

    Morgan H.

Had the seasonal omelet, lamb doner, and pork schnitzel. All were great and flavorful. The line outside moved pretty quick and the service was helpful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We loved being able to sit outside and get some nice sunshine in late March.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Been here for brunch. Do they actually wait the table during dinner rather than having us order at the register?

Yes, will have to wait to be seated

What's the largest reservation they'll take? Do they have a private room?

My company had our team dinner there. It was at least 20 people. They sat us upstairs in an open area. Not sure if they have a 'full private' room though. Might be worth a call seeking 'full' private

They make cookies, pastries, breads (pan loaf and hand-formed ones), soups, hand pies, and sandwiches. The variety is amazing. During the holiday season, they offer larger pies and have various seasonal goods to offer. But what's also wonderful is this bakery gives back to the community in many ways. During the height of the pandemic, they offered free bagged lunch to anyone who needed one. They also were (are?) part of the pilot project for Durham's guaranteed income. It looks to me that the owners/company are concerned about being good citizens of the community and that's a great thing. These days, so many companies get bought out by private equity companies. I hope this bakery continues to be locally owned and operated! (Also, generally this bakery isn't offering the very fancy European/European-ish style pastries which is fine by me. The prices are very reasonable, possibly in part because they aren't trying to make their baked goods a "high end" item. There are other good local bakeries that offer "high end" pastries, but they are also much less affordable and for my taste, too rich.)

We got a pack of 8 chocolates (admittedly they did cost a pretty penny haha), which ranked from my most to least favorite are: 1. Horchata: So good, the horchata essence hit me as soon as I took a bite. Very cinnamony, very milky & creamy. 2. Passionfruit: I'm a sucker for anything passionfruit. The curd-like filling did not taste artificial at all. 3. Almond cardamom: Topped with a real almond, but more cardamom forward, reminded me of chai. 4. Hazelnut sassy monkey: Distinguished more coffee than banana, but it was there. Also liked the layer of crunch. 5. Raspberry lychee: The raspberry jam was strong and tasty, the floral essence from lychee was subtle. 6. Sesame matcha: Surprisingly citrusy? I did taste some bitterness from the matcha and appreciated the earthy sesame crust. 7. Ube: Sadly did not detect much ube flavor. 8. Earl grey lavender: Definitely the prettiest, but tasted like what I imagine soap would taste like. In terms of whether the chocolate is worth the price: I've never had this experience of trying such diverse and interesting chocolate flavors before so it was for me. Ambiance is nice, I think there was only outside seating. There's good parking nearby in the Brightleaf lots or on W Pettigrew St. Service was fast and friendly. 8/10 would recommend!

"VERY hole-in-the-wall Middle Eastern patisserie"…read more This gives hole-in-the-wall new meaning. The location is in a strip-mall that's set back a ways from 55, so it's not really visible from the street at all. However, it's weirder than that-- you have to drive AROUND the strip mall to the back, past the various loading docks for other stores, and they you see this place is open just from the BACK of the strip mall. I heard the owner is Algerian, but there are many Palestinian references and flags around the shop, so if that's triggering, then know this in advance before coming in. Still, the place is brightly lit and airy, with tables to eat. They do custom cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts, but we just wanted to sample some sweets. Hours are funny-- just midday Friday through Sunday. We ordered a pecan brownie and a pistachio chocolate dish with kunafa (shredded Middle Eastern pastry), as well as a mocha coffee. The mocha coffee was rich and delicious, as expected. The pistachio chocolate dish with kunafa was to-die-for... SO delicious. Super thick and messy, as you'd hope it would be. And of course the pecan brownie was amazing. I will say the pastries are not "cheap". I got a single tahini chocolate chip cookie to go for a friend, and that was $4.50 for a modest sized cookie. The other dishes above were in the $6 range. But these are unusual custom-made dishes, so it's fair.

Worth every penny and I have spent quite a lot pennies at this place. When you get a cheesecake, be forewarned that it more than likely is frozen- it has to be since there are no preservatives!! I like to get home and cut it into 4ths and put back into the freezer to freeze them to keeep them from getting to soft and mushy since I only eat a 1/4 at a time. Plus it's easier to cut them when they are frozen. My only wish is that they had a sugar free version.... But then again, maybe it's a blessing in disguise!
