I thought I was having a stroke so I called 911 at 5 o'clock this morning. Got to the ER started ok at four or five doctors looking at me then they took me over to Eye Clinic, and after that when I went over there, I still had a needle hanging out of my arm. They never took it out. They had released me and didn't even bother to tell me anything they didn't tell me what they thought the ER there really sucks actually the whole hospital sucks. What could they improve? Keeping patients alive to start would be ideal. This place was responsible for the deaths of 2 family members. If you want proper medical care, transfer to Mayo or if distance isn't a factor try a facility in the Northeast. You might luck out in St Louis but overall, do not get sick or in an accident in Missouri or near Columbia. The VA is almost as bad. The entire staff at MU emergency room on 11/ 7. They were insanely busy but every single person working was calm, professional and caring. I seriously don't know how they did it. From the nurses and staff at the front desk/check-in area to the doctors, PA's and nurses in the back, and the guy that wheeled me to the catscan and the catscan staff, they were all so caring, kind and also fun and funny. Got into an ER room around 10pm, we were very popular the first 30 minutes of us being in the room. The doctor changed 3 different times, the people at the desk changed multiple times too. We were told 10 minutes by the doctor for some news. That ended up being an hour. Finally at 12:50 in the morning, we are told it'll be 5 minutes to get discharge papers. Guess how long it took? 30 minutes. My biggest thing is how does it take 30 minutes to print off the chart of what was done over the course of 5 hours, and paper of how to get help on anxiety. We didn't go to the ER for an anxiety attack. So their times are Soon=90 minutes, 10 minutes=60 minutes and 5 minutes=30 minutes read more

so as I'm sitting in the emergency room waiting to be seen I can't help but notice the RN working the front desk by the name of Loren just has a poor attitude little to no care is even given to the patient she's rushing through things and just seems like she has other places to be. I wouldn't recommend coming in here to be seen if you looking for that homey family feeling , it lacks it poorly ! I'm very disappointed in this hospital. My niece and her boyfriend took their premature baby to Capital Region and they in turn transported her by ambulance to Columbia University Hospital. This poor little baby was seen by the attending Doctor when she arrived in the evening. They could see there was something wrong. She's breathing extremely hard ...She's coughing and having trouble eating. She can't stay awake when she's eating because it's too strenuous and she gets fatigued and falls asleep and doesn't wake back up. They put a feeding tube down her because she couldn't stay awake to eat.. they left the feeding tube open twice and her food went everywhere. She was laying in a puddle. My niece went out to tell the nurse and she told her she was busy and she would be in, but she never came in. A different doctor was in at 9 AM and at 3:30pm has yet to see him again. They found out he just went home. But that doctor said she was fine until he saw a video of what she does at any given time. The nurse has been in twice for the whole day. Nothing has been done. This poor little baby has been coughing and coughing. She can't eat because it's a struggle for her. She gets out of breath and goes to sleep so she's not getting enough to eat. She's breathing so hard. It's like she's struggling to get Oxygen when she eats. The next doctor in, the attending physician, told them, yes it's a mystery. We don't know why she's doing that but yet they're not doing anything. My niece told them they wanted her discharged so they could take her to Mercy Children's Hospital in Kansas City and all of a sudden they say they're going to come up with a game plan. Are you joking?? I'm so afraid they're going to let her die. I would never bring my child back here again or any family member for that matter. I'm so disgusted with this place. read more

My review first... on Monday November 13 2023 at 7:20 in the morning my youngest son had a admit into hospital. Yes i arrived early so I wouldn't have rush myself. After knowing my would be their I for a few days I might have over packed by I wanted to be totally prepared to stay the whole time my son was a patient there, and leaving to go back home until he was discharged. So had a lot of bags and my two young sons with me and upon entering the emergency room entrance for the kids they have put in place these security things you have to walk through which I was cool with until the security guard lied and said that the alarm signal that I had something in one of my bags that I wasn't supposed to have and he proceeded to tell me that my bags had to be searched cuz I had a weapon on me and I told him I had no weapons so I proceeded to go on in the door of the emergency room for the kids and moments later he came into the emergency room after getting on his walkie-talkie and saying he had one that was not compliant and refuse a bag search and I told them that he needed a search warrant to go through my bags and after saying that he told me they don't need search warrants well I told him that even if you get pulled over or stop by the police you have a right to refuse to be searched and he said that the hospital is private property so they have a right to invade your privacy in your space well I disagree with that and I said that the hospital was not private property because they received payment through Medicare and Medicaid which makes it public and he argue with me for a while on that subject and proceeded on against my wishes and search my bags and after searching on my bags he felt absolutely nothing that was a weapon or could be used as a weapon other than a toothbrush well I have a right to have toothbrushes to brush our teeth and after going through my bags and having all these other security guards rush and corralled around me they wanted to argue with me because of my attitude on being searched after telling them numerous and numerous of times I had no weapons so yes I was upset and then there was this one security guard who leaned on the desk or the countertop in front of the nurses that was checking my son in to be admitted scaring me all in my face telling me I have to talk to him and confront the situation of why I was upset and I told him to get out of my face and I did not have to talk to him he said it there just staring me down trying to harass me and further and take her nice me by trying to make me do something I did not have to legally hold a conversation with nobody and then I got into it with the nurses that was supposed to be checking my son in who was also screaming at me because I was mad about this illegal search so there is bad blood and a bad history but the University hospital who feels they could criminalize someone that's there for health reasons and I know that's against the law unless they knowingly know I've committed or offense about to commit our friends or in the process of committing an illegal or felony offense they have no right to criminalize me or anyone else for that reason and I believe they no one is speaking up for themselves as far as their rights go and how they're impeding people's rights upon entering the hospital that still swipe my son's medical card at the end of the day and I just feel like it's unjust and is their policy does not Trump what law has written in the security guards are so totally racist and not only do they do this to me upon entering the hospital but my husband has kidney failure it is on dialysis and the hospital continue every time he interest the University hospital which is doctors through this hospital would tell him to go to the ER at the University and each time he shows up he is totally harassed by the security has taken video has posted on tick tock Facebook every outlet even YouTube of this hospital is treating my husband time and time again the same security guards so badly want to be real polices and don't even have flashlights feel like they have a right to make people feel like criminals upon entering this hospital and I also let him know that I will be leaving a review upon my son being discharged from the hospital which yes today the only thing that make my visit worthwhile is that we're never mistreated by the doctors nurses and other staff welcome you greet you and makes you feel like you're in good hands but it's what you got to go through to get to these nurses and the doctors in the staff that wants you to feel better and be better and something seriously needs to be done about the security in this hospital and their policies and how they criminalize you without you even breaking the law I don't want anybody masturbating on my underwear just because they feel like they have a right to he's on my belongings read more

All do the staff was super friendly however I went in with a severe asthma attack and they gave me medicine then sent me home within an hour. I was back in the er within 30 minutes. The second They kept me over night and I am still unable to breathe but they discharged me. I've had asthma my entire life and have been in and out it hospitals for it and I've never had doctors completely ignore me like the ones here. This is now the second time I have to drive to St. Louis to get proper health care. Social Service: In a routine situation, patient hospital discharge, advice is hard to come by, i.e. long unpredictable waiting times, a lot of intense questioning yielding little or no concrete useful information - a procedure comparable to "tooth pulling" after which one is left with a void. A pity that the social worker ("case manager") let a wonderful opportunity to serve a patient's family, pass by. A social worker, committed to helping patients and families could easily be a fountain of useful information. (My one-time experience should not be over generalized.) read more

After my experiences with this hospital, I find myself quite ambivalent. There are some very good points--but there are also some very annoying points. I was originally sent up to the Orthopaedic Clinic of this hospital for consultation back in February, by my orthopaedic surgeon in Springfield, Missouri. I had broken my leg (pulverized the bone just below my left knee, actually) in a scooter accident, and over the course of healing it had developed a "malunion"--healed crookedly, with the bones coming together in the wrong place. We checked into the clinic and went to our appointment, and all seemed to be going well so far--but they were entirely unable to find the x-rays or other documentation that my Springfield surgeon had sent up to them. So we had to have new X-rays taken of my leg. This was done, and we saw the doctors. The doctors wanted a CT ("cat") scan taken of my leg...but they needed to find out that my insurance would cover it. So they spent the next hour trying to find that out, while sending my father and me down a hallway to get a blood sample taken. When they finally got the go-ahead for the scan, they sent us to radiology on the second floor--across the hospital, second floor, with me gamely hobbling along on my crutches. But when we got there, we were told, no, we SHOULD have gone to Outpatient Radiology on the FIRST floor. So we went down the elevator, and I hobbled down a long hall to that office. But when we got THERE, we were told we did not have the right paperwork, and we needed to go all the way back out to REGISTRATION and "check in"--even though we had already "checked in" at the clinic. Then we had a 45-minute wait at registration--half of it waiting to see a representative, the other half waiting for him to come back from wherever he'd gone. And at least part of that wait was due to someone trying to call our insurance company and confirm the CT scan procedure even though the orthopaedic clinic HAD ALREADY DONE THAT. At last we got the right paperwork, and were sent down the long hall again to first-floor radiology--where it turned out that their CT scanner was busy (we had missed our reserved slot on it due to all the bureaucracy), so they took us up a private elevator to use the CT scanner from the second floor instead. By the time we got out of there, we were not feeling kindly disposed toward the competence of anybody in any of the administrative departments of the hospital. Our second visit was less frustrating--the doctors, whose competence we've NEVER doubted, went over proposed treatment options with us (involving a Taylor spatial frame), and agreed to give us some time to think it over. We could call back in when we were ready to schedule the surgery. But then, when my father tried to call back into the Orthopaedic Clinic to schedule the surgery, all he got was a recording saying he would be called back in 24 to 48 hours--and NOT to try calling again, because repeated calls could mean they would not return the call at all! It took a week and a half to get ahold of anybody at the hospital, and my father only managed that by calling the appointment desk and asking to be transferred over to a living person. And when he did that, he found the surgery had already BEEN scheduled--without any notification ever being sent to us! Fortunately, the non-administrative aspects of the hospital ran much more smoothly. When I went in this past week for the actual surgery, the check-in process was fast and efficient, taking no more than an hour or so from the time I went through the hospital doors to the time I went under for surgery. During the recovery process, the nurses were without exception friendly, helpful, and cheerful (although there was one frustrating day where it was hard to get ahold of the day nurse because she had been issued a non-working pager). The hospital also had WiFi access I could use with my iPod Touch, which greatly helped my sanity in terms of staying in touch with my friends and family. And the hospital had the best food that I have seen from a hospital. Instead of the system Cox South had used in Springfield, where you had to mark down your order ahead of time and the cafeteria made all meals at once, the Mizzou hospital had "room service" where food was made to order and would be delivered within 45 minutes of the original order. It was amazing how much more appetizing and edible this made-to-order food was, and I am certain it was at least partly responsible for my speedy recovery and swift discharge. On balance, as frustrating as the administrative aspects of the hospital were, I at least had a positive experience where it most counted, in terms of the actual surgery and recovery. read more

Place is full of inexperienced staff and doctors who frequently lie and make mistakes. They are also indecisive which leads to massive wait times and feet dragging. Plenty of unnecessary tests to run up the ridiculous costs and bills too. Get a basic X-ray done and expect the results to be read by your kid doctor sometime within 10 hours. But don't expect said doctor to speak to you. He's probably too busy doing his school work rather than his job. Basic, minimal surgery that would take 2 hours or less extended to 5 hours. Then recovery from the surgery takes two days before they will issue a discharge. This type of "service" is frequent as my dealings with them has been multiple times over the course of a year+. Furthermore, security staff are of no use and are incapable of providing protection. Then, after they mess everything up and probably make your condition worse, don't expect to see the bill. They shadow bill you so by the time you are notified it's already in collections and the debt collector is suing you. Better off treating your condition with whiskey and a pair of tweezers. read more

I would not trust them as they've had their hands in my pocket so much now a simple visit has been billed over and over and over again. My Health insurance has covered everything however they continue to try to bill me personally. I was here for a csf flow study and neurosurgeon visit. Radiology was fine, but when it came to the non-existing neurosurgeon, I became frustrated. His Np filled in (dr. Saddiq), Np (Callie Dickes) and her new assistant. Seems to think my chiari diagnoses was nothing. My brain tissue going into my spine isn't normal. I will have to go out of state to find a specialist for my condition. It's not curable, but surgery can relieve some pressure. If you have what I do, don't go to university. It's a waste of time. Two stars because radiology wasn't put off like my neurosurgeon office. read more

They came in 1 at a time throughout the stay. They were always on the same page. Very informative about diagnosis and treatment. The last day they explained what was to happen. I have symptoms for covid or omicron. Severe flu like symptoms. One of their clinics makes you fill out paperwork online in order to be seen. Now mind you, I'm already registered in their computer as it is. They know who I am. However, they still want me registered on their site which makes NO sense. I felt terrible as it is, and could very well test positive for covid, but they want me to sit in there and possibly infect other patients by filling out nonsense online. Their site had issues also. So registering was not possible. (Which again, was unnecessary since I was in their system) you have to sit in there even longer to contact their tech support if you cannot register. I was quite angry, and left, refusing to do their idiotic registration. Contacted the ER and asked what is the quickest way to get a covid test? The individual who answered the phone said you have to be symptomatic first. Well, no duh. Who goes to the ER when they feel fine? The ER staff always have nasty attitudes also. Who wants to deal with that when they already feel miserable? This establishment needs to pull it together bec they are messing up on a grand scale. Management needs to start using their brains, and stop trying to force patients to go digital..... especially IF THEY ARE ALREADY IN THE COMPUTER!!!!!! The ppl behind the desk are supposed to register patients. If I have to re-register which is YOUR job, then I expect to receive YOUR paycheck! Horrible experience with elder care and staff taking care of basic needs of a patient.

I have NEVER in my life left a bad review - simply because I know things happen and hate to bring negativity to any situation or business. BUT THIS IS NOT OK. My 22 year old son was flown from Rolla to Columbia after he was hit by a car on his bike. My son was in and out of consciousness, and his injuries included road rash, concussion, and a skull fracture. He was admitted on Sunday afternoon and released Monday morning. I was told he had been sedated, and was having a hard time fully coming out of it. Due to COVID - we were not allowed in to see him. When we spoke on the phone Monday morning, his speech was low and he sounded half asleep - but we were told he was ready to be released. When we went to pick him up in the patient pick-up area - MY SON WAS ALONE, in a wheelchair wearing ONLY a hospital gown (completely naked underneath), with crazy blood-matted hair, waiting for us. He was confused and disoriented and cried the moment he saw us. HOW IS IT OK to leave a patient with a concussion and skull fracture ALONE for ANY length of time? He was the hospital's responsibility until we picked him up - and he was left alone. He could have had a seizure, passed out, or gotten confused and wandered off. He still remembers very little about that day, except that he was wheeled next to a phone and told to "dial 90" (or something like that) if no one showed up for him. I'm not even certain he should have been sent home yet. Oh - and his paperwork was in the back pocket of his wheelchair. There wasn't even anyone around to advise after care or follow up instructions. I understand he is an adult. But I would hope that my husband, mother, or ANY other adult would not be LEFT ALONE in this condition either! COVID or not - NO ONE should be treated this way. I'm grateful nothing happened to him while he waited for us to arrive (which was no more than 15 minutes after we got the call), but this is NOT OK. I've issued a complaint with the "Office of Patient Experience" (their version of patient advocate) and after 3 weeks still have not heard a thing back. This momma is BEYOND frustrated with my son's care. read more

I received care for a congenital liver disease at MU, for 15 years. After my husband's unexpected death, I began having serious episodes of confusion and disorientation. When I contacted my drs, Jack Bragg and Dennis Ng, their response was to contact my adult daughter and tell her they thought I was abusing opiod medication - even though I had not received any prescriptions and the drug and acohol urine tests they began giving me at every appointment were always clear. My daughter loved me, but didn't know who to believe. Finally, while visiting my family in Oregon, I became ill and was rushed to the hospital - where I was informed I was in end-stage liver failure, that my confusion was due to hepatic encephalopathy (a major symptom of complete hepatic failure), and placed on the transplant list. I received a liver December 29, 2014...and got the hell out of Missouri, forever, as soon as I could walk. I would sue these monsters, but I am bankrupted by my illness and struggling with serious issues of PTSD, stemming from it and their treatment of me. I wouldn't send my worst enemy to the butchers at MU University Hospital. read more

I went to the ER twice in one week. They did a x-ray that shows I have a collapsed fractured vertebrae that's right above rids from a previous back break. They gave me no pain medicine and sent home with a few muscle relaxers and naproxen. Now both of my legs have no feeling they're numb and tingly. I can't stand to use them. Because I have no insurance they told me I was between a rock and hard place without insurance and that I need surgery. I'm currently laying in bed with the worse pain I've ever had and no hospital anywhere will help me. I'm looking at the fact that I'll die in this bed. I've tried to get Medicaid and even they said that won't help me. So for me this hospital literally turned me away twice with no help whatsoever. Basically go home and die! read more

I am highly upset over the treatment of my grandmother, who had to be transported to the University Hosptial two weeks ago. She was moved from the orange tower or Ellis tower on the fifth floor, to a different room on the fifth floor of the green floors. I, mother, and other family members are angered by the way the staff treats my grandma. I have been trying to not make a comment for a couple days, but now I think it's for the better. My grandma was taking in to the ER because of an infection in her body which made her unable to do much for herself. The cause of the infection stemmed from the site where the removed middle toe on her left foot and a healing gash from a fall. Somehow after she had the stitches taking out by her primary doctor became infected. Round 1 of her Hell. Round 2. She was doing good once taken to a room on the orange floors or Ellis tower. When they had to move her because of new patients, she was taken to a room with a view to a wall. This depressed her greatly and so my family and her had asked to be moved to a room where she can actually look outside. Round 3. The staff on both day and night shift, except for a very select few, are basically killing my grandma. They kept her sedated and food trays out of her reach, found twice on the dirty laundry bin. They did not assist her with eating nor asked when or if she was hungry. Round 4. The social worker, for some reason someone appointed to her, only claims that she is not wanting to heal or getting better. Okay, well first off, some staff are keeping her sedated, she is not eating like she should because staff are not offering nor helping her with eating like putting the tray where she can eat...Like, wait; there's more. Round 4. She had to have another toe removed, which we have been told by her foot doctor may need correction. On top of that, the staff said that the infection had spread up past the wound on her right leg...so they operated on her right knee to remove a broken piece of her thirty year old knee replacement. And now since having that done, they claim that she will never walk again... Round 5. My family has seen this energetic, eighty year old woman go from helping babysit her great grandbaby and living n loving life, to this sedated, miserable woman we don't know. I have never seen her like this. It's heartbreaking, and there is more to this than I can fit into this review. I never dreamed someone would treat my grandmother the way that they have and God damn the ones who had and have been putting her in this miserable state. I hope when they become elderly, they get the same if not worse treatment! She has had moments where she felt better, then random changes... I wish I could give this no stars. No more neglect of our elders! read more

I recently visited the University Hospital on many occasions to visit family members. The parking lot is easily accessible and for the most part, away from the student walking paths. The facilities are clean and easily accessible after a quick visit to the Information Desk. The staff is friendly and willing to answer any questions you might have. The two rooms I visited were both super clean and well-stocked with toiletries, both with nice views of the surrounding areas. I would definitely recommend The University Hospital for your future needs. read more

I enjoyed my stay at Columbia University Hospital. They employees, nurses and doctor were great. They just didn't have enough nurses and doctors to go around on the 8th floor. They were slow getting to you to answer your nurse call. Some nurses and doctors want too stare at your foot wounds instead of helping your clean the dead skin from your feet and legs and your toe nails trimmed. They did nothing except for that one nurse. This hospital is very well ran. I have worked in a hospital in the past and this hospital has good energy. The staff that I encountered were very caring and informative. I was here for a sibling who was very ill. I was watch everyone like a hawk and after 3 days I landed because my brother received prompt and professional health care services. My only complaint is that the hospital need to get a private company to run their food services. It just seem that they don't want the responsibility of feeding people who come here. I have been to hospitals that run efficient and well stocked Food services without having tons of waste. The hours of the grille are limited. And the day I was there they hardly had any food to make a simple sandwich. read more

Usually I would give my 5 stars to everything in the mu healthcare system, not tonight. I've been living with anxiety attacks and panic attacks, sometimes crippling since I was 16, I'm 34 now. I've done everything in my power to obtain every tool available to me into a treatment plan that works for me when these attacks happen, I've worked out a system that utilizes several tools, exercises and sometimes meds so that I can easily control them and they are no longer a problem. Here is the problem, I started a new medication yesterday. At first I had slight shortness of breath, nothing I couldn't handle. Took the second dose tonight, within 30 mins had extreme difficulty breathing/ couldn't catch my breath. I know my body and I knew it felt nothing like a panic attack. However I went through my usual routines to rule it out. Breathing got worse to the point I could barely speak. Spoke with nurse line, was advised it was probably an anaphylactic reaction to the new med. So off we go to university hospital. By this time i couldn't even swallow. They were quick and right on top of things, quickly got meds going. Then er dr ALLANA DIAMOND comes in. She is convinced im having an anxiety attack. I continue to struggle to breath while becoming so dizzy I could not stand. and all the muscle in my bank start to become painful. I tried to inform her that I've had numerous anxiety/ panic attacks and this feels completely different and my usual remedies have no effect. She leaves, gives me something for Nausea. Mean while im still struggling to breath normally. Finally comes back, says this I'd just an anxiety attack that's how it will treated. You are being discharged I was barely there an hour. I ask for benadryl just in case which she gives me and what do you know, I felt a ton better, was still discharged at that time. Walking out to the front doors I could barely stand on my own, grasping at walls to steady my self I was so dizzy and disoriented. Aren't you supposed to leave the er without falling all over the place? Doctors, your patients know their own body and how it reacts to certain things a hell of a lot better than you do. Get off your high horse and listen to your patients instead of assuming that just because you have that doctor badge that makes you better than everyone. Now im sitting at home, still short of breath (which I wouldn't be if treated properly and someone had listened to me) going to call my primary care and Phyc doc in the am for second and third opinions. Never felt so dismissed, ignored, like she didn't give a shit about what I had to say. Normally mu has a full 5 stars from me but if I could give it less than 1 based on tonight's experience I would. Let your patients have input, listen to it, and seriously take it into account, don't ignore them. If they tell you something is different or not right then it is. read more

Excellent facilty and staff! My sister had knee surgery here and from the doctors to the nurses to the staff, they were all outstanding.

When I went to their physical therapist over an injury on my foot, they told me my body was just changing and to not worry about it. Now 3 years later my entire body has been effected by my right foot having a collapsing arch. I know have to go to intense physical therapy, and wear a boot. Many doctors in Chicago told me this could have all been avoided if it was caught early on. MU failed me, which doesn't surprise me. read more
