I've been to this bookstore twice and each time I'm reminded that is should never step foot in there again. A tiny, overcrowded store whose customers are just as pretentious as the books the store attempts to sell. Dusty, uncomfortably small, and lacking in anything written after the 20th century, this place lacks versatility, both in its clientele and books. read more

Had a great time, found some very cool obscure books on Medieval music, folk music, and some classical sheet music for violin. It's a tiny hole in the wall, very quiet, they don't rush you, and it's next to a café, which is cool, and the staff is really friendly. I didn't find what I was looking for, but I came out with some other super cool books and spent waaaaaay too much time there! I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't so crammed and hard to read the titles (I was on all fours with my head turned to the side most of the time). It's the typical 'half-off the cover price' deal. Not a bad selection though. I picked up 'Decoded' by Jay-Z, which I've had my eye on for a while. Hardback. Sort of beat up. And paid $11 for it. They had a lot of great books that you don't normally see in your average used bookstore. Classics and other not so common titles. read more

Fun used bookstore. Filled to the brim with books, just how I like it. You could browse for hours. I always find something interesting.

This bookstore seems to be about 60% used titles and 40% new. Like any good North Brooklyn-ite, I try to support the local arts scene, hence my fondness for this store by extension. The bargain bin outside has some good deals - I scored for only $1 a popular non-fiction title released last year, in mint condition. The other used books were reasonable in their prices, probably about what you would pay if you bought from Amazon. My sense was that, compared to your average Barnes and Noble, Unnameable had a higher preponderance of books in what might be classified as "hipster" interests - photography, film making, and so on. The atmosphere is not really conductive to lounging or browsing. The aisles are cramped and the inside of the store is about the size of a studio apartment. read more

So far, I've only visited this bookstore once. I discovered it only because a couple of weeks ago I was working in that particular part of Brooklyn for a week. And I am so glad I was! As much as I love Barnes & Noble, I truly love finding small-owned bookshops! I live in Greenwich Village and two neighborhood favorites and become very bias against other bookstores. However, this bookstore won me over because of the varied selection they have. Yes, they do sell used books, so be prepared to find some books with yellow-ish coloring on the paper (yuck!), but they do sell them at a decent price. The staff was only made up of two persons the time I went. The male kept himself towards the back area, managing the payments while the woman was arranging some books pretty much wherever there was room. There are books everywhere, on tables, shelves, floor, etc. But they were both really nice, definite plus in my book. Before grabbing the book you want in a new version, ask if they have it used. Chances are they do and it could be in decent condition. The moment I can, I will definitely be returning and enjoying my book across the street at Stocked! read more

EDIT: called back and same woman was totally nice when I suggested they order the book for me. She placed the order immediately and let me know it would be in within a week and that they would give me a call. So, I retract the below. :) What an incredible bookstore and right by my house! However, just called this evening to find a title by David Macaulay called The New Way Things Work RATHER a than just order it off Amazon. Girl who answered was flippant and seemed to be pretending to look if the book was in stock. General attitude of being bothered. She checked the reference section and said no. I asked if I could give her the author's name and she said "No, actually it's a pretty small section so I'm sure it's not there." Okay... I countered with - well it's also a children's book (it's a thick science tome) and she says 30 seconds later - "No sorry." Maybe I'm off base but at least offer to order the book for me or whatever? Lack of organization and customer service this time. This is one reason why otherwise great neighborhood bookstores can get edged out by Amazon etc. Pull your head out of your ass and build a simple database, inquire further with suggestions on how to help etc. Or don't have a listed phone line. :/ read more

This bookstore ranks with Shakespeare & Co. Bibliophiles flock to sell their exchange their collections so there is a constant turnover of books. We enjoy the ever-changing display of books in the storefront windows and we're always finding something unusual and intriguing to peruse. If you want to sell your books be prepared for a line on the weekends because they are popular. read more

As an independent bookstore with a good selection, I have loved this place, have sold countless numbers of used books there, and have gone there for the better half of five years, which makes my recent experience with unnameable books all the more unfortunate: last weekend I was perusing the books and when I left the owner ran out of the store after me nervously and asked to search my bag, essentially implying that I had stolen a book. I showed him an empty bag, and he asked me what I did with one of the books I was looking at; I walked back into the store and promptly showed him where I'd put it on the shelf, to which he replied "okay" in a frustrated manner, as if I were the one who'd done something wrong. It seems that a patron who you surely recognize, who has given you years of used books and business deserves a little more respect. I don't know if I'm suspicious to Adam, but he obviously had his eye on me or something to randomly accuse me of stealing a book, and on top of it not recognizing his error. When I had to go back into the store to show him where I placed the book, the other person working there was also concerned and asked if there was a problem, which was also more embarrassing for me to experience in a crowded bookstore on the weekend. This experience has led me to believe ultimately it comes down to the money for Adam, over accusing longtime community patrons. I've also seen how he's passed off my gently used books as new ones, which didn't really bother me before until the recent incident. I'm not and don't think I look poor but I'm a grad student who's not exactly wealthy, so maybe if Adam feels more comfortable with the Park Slope stroller crowd that also frequents his place he should move to 7th Avenue or Brooklyn Heights... in any case, yesterday I used and cashed in the rest of my $34 in credit and won't bother showing up at his place again. read more

This is a wonderful bookstore! It's great to have a bookstore in the neighborhood, let alone one that 1) sells new and used books, 2) is really well curated, and 3) is open until 11pm. The staff is friendly and always really cool about browsing. Even when I can't find exactly what I'm looking for, I can count on the staff recommendations section for good and interesting options. Man, some denizens of BK have become so uptight... Unnameable is a great resource, a tiny non-mainstream new/used bookstore. Great for literary, scholarly, eclectic, art books, kids books, cookbooks. If you're looking to sell: They are selective when buying because, umm, did you notice the stacks of books already overflowing on the floors? I don't always understand the buying, but try not to take it personally. Also, they don't buy for huge $, but it lets me circulate my library and buy... More... Boooooks!! Bringing book in to sell/trade usually leaves one feeling a little ripped off. These guys not only did that, but they were very rude. 2 people behind the counter going on about the books I brought in while looking up their value online. In front of me. I tried to engage them in discussion about and they were very cold. I can see that their job isn't easy and they probably get a lot of really difficult people coming in, but still. This was the worst book selling experience I've had in Brooklyn. I got a warmer reception and better deal at Strand. Strand, for crying out loud! read more

As this is one of the few bookstores in bklyn that buy used books I called to ask a quote of a price on a book I'd like to sell & said they would have to physically see the book in person ! You can't just quote me a price before I trek there in the freezing cold ? I understand the condition the book is in is important but why no quote on a book depending on condition? I have been shopping at Adam's bookstore since he was on Bergen & 5th. He's got a wonderful collection of used and new books. In my opinion, the value of a good used bookstore is in the curating. He doesn't just take whatever you want to get rid of -- that's what stoops are for Patty F. He takes what he knows his buyers want. He has limited shelf-space so he can only carry so much. And, btw, Adam is never scornful. Ever. He's sincerely one of the nicest, kindest guys in the city. Go to B&N for Hunger Games. At Unnameable Books, what you see is what you get. Unnameable Books has a great many titles both new and used. I enjoy perusing the bookstore, and patronize it regularly. It is the kind of bookstore that has been disappearing because of the expansion of chain stores. I remember bookstores like on old Fourth Avenue in Manhattan, bookstores that are now gone. I have been looking for a book by Joseph Mitchell, who used to write for the New Yorker. I found a used copy, in good condition. I also found an excellent book by Seth Lerer (Inventing English) on the history of the English language. read more
