    Flowers on our table

Tonight's experience at Unter was nothing short of phenomenal. I am visiting my sister and her husband in Istanbul. We have had great food, but wanted a change in scenery and variety. Sissy scouted some locations in Karakoy and the three of us meandered the streets to check out our top picks. The area is a hip area of town with neat little shops and many unique restaurants and stores. We came back to Unter, and it was a great decision. The restaurant is small, but the large open windows make it feel airy and broad. Even though we were inside, it felt as though we were siting alongside the happening street. The ambiance from the neighborhood meshed smoothly with Unter. We enjoyed the music and took our time scoping out the menu. We began our meal with olives and a cheese plate. We all gushed over the four delicious cheeses which ranged from a comte-esque to a creamy soft cheese. The plate was sprinkled with fresh thyme which kicked up the flavors a notch. The olives were delish and had bits of lemon and garlic included. Our server also brought out bread and a flavorful spread that was tomato based with a peppery kick. My brother in law and I ordered the same meal (grilled tenderloin) and my sister ordered the salmon. Our food come out quickly and was pristine. All dishes were served with mashed potatoes. The foreign pungent cheese atop of them went beautifully with the creaminess of the potatoes and our steaks. My sister's salmon was cooked perfectly with crispy skin and tender fish. She also raved about the herbed zucchini salad that went with it. We were stuffed. But not too stuffed for dessert. Due to some food allergies, we decided to order a slice of flourless chocolate cake. This was the second best decision of the night (after choosing Unter, of course). This was not just any old wheat tee dessert; this was THE DESSERT. We "ooohed" and "aahed." We tasted and savored. Then I realized I forgot to take a picture of this pure dessert, so I got up to take a picture of the lovely cake itself. Perhaps the server saw the delight in our eyes, because almost as soon as we were done he placed another before our eyes. This kindness was gifted to us and was such a delight. The cake is the best flourless chocolate cake any of us had ever had. The texture was silky and fine and burst with flavor. The exterior had a nice crunch. The cake was so good that when we entered it was whole, and when we left there was only a slice or two left. And I promise we only ate two. And yes, I neglected to take a picture of the second slice as well. This meal was the best I have enjoyed in quite a while. The atmosphere was grand and the food was well prepared and organized. The chefs and menu planners have a strong understanding of flavor profiles. Unter is a must-visit restaurant, especially if you are in the area.

Great food, great staff ! You shouldn't miss ! Also try to go on the week days for their lunch menu, it's traditionally turkish cuisine but amazing cooking you'll be surprised how much you missed home food after all these junk food we have been forced to eat.... But check can get sometimes expensive but worth it !

    The 3 mini burgers

This place is a european style modern cafe. They serve brunch and dishes as you might recognize from western europe. I had a "3 mini burgers" and they were great. Some of the waiters were a bit busy with themselves though. Don't go here if you look for something local and turkish. There are plenty of other places nearby where you will find an atmosphere like that.

It is a little hole in the wall place, but they serve up a traditional flavorful dish a bit like seitan basically. You can get it in a wrap and if you are staying somewhere can take a box home for fairly cheap. Also be sure to check out nearby Parsifal. This is a simple sit down affordable place that is 100 percent vegetarian and has many vegan options. The menu labels what is vegetarian and what is vegan making ordering easy.

I have been going to Zencefil for years but last time I was there was about 4-5 years ago. The restaurants has been keeping its style, quality for many years. Even the menu looks like the same except for a few new dishes depending on the season. There are several kinds of vegetable quiches such as eggplant, spinach, etc. The nice think is that before the meal they serve butter mixed with herbs accompanied with bread. There were two kinds of bread; with corn flour and whole wheat. However, the bread could be better, I didn't like the whole wheat bread. I can make batter breads and I am wondering why they do not make their own bread adding different kinds of herbs and vegetables. Although it is a vegetarian restaurant, there one or two chicken dishes on the menu. Since there wasn't so much change on the menu for years, I have already tried most dishes which were OK. I mean the tastes are nice, not heavenly but you know that all of them are healthy. This time I had warm served Aegean stew made of artichokes, faba beans and black-eyed beans. It was so light and tasty, I really like it. I had homemade ginger ale for a drink but frankly saying I didn't like it maybe because I am used to Canadian dry or other brands. But I recommend its lemonade with ginger. I hope they add more experimental vegetable recipes on the menu next time. At the end of the meal they always serve coriander and some dry herb to refreshen the breath which I really like. Lastly, the ambiance is nice, bright, colorful and the place is mostly full of young people and tourists during lunch hours. The service is not bad but I wish they smile more...

We had a bit of an issue where where someone from our group left their phone in the taxi. We needed help translating over the phone and also making phone calls and getting camera recording to find the car number and whatnot, and I'll stop at the restaurant were more than happy to help us. As for the food, everything is delicious! My favorite was the Biberli ekmek (flat thread with spicy cheese on top). That flat bread was phenomenal! Good amount of spicy cheese on top and something you could just have on repeat. Classic Turkish breakfast was also yum. Number of items was impressive! I think even a portion for 2 is enough for 3 or 4 people if you get another item outside of the Turkish breakfast. It comes with a mix of sweet and savory items so you have a whole meal there with dessert included. The main highlights here were the pumpkin item, the red pepper hummus, classic hummus, carrot jam. Traditionally suchukn sausage was also delicious. Dad loved the Muhammara. One thing though is that they put a lot of oil on top of every items so if you want to avoid that maybe ask them to avoid putting oil on things like hummus and the yogurt which don't already have oil inside it. I highly recommend combining multiple dips together in one bite along with the flatbread. really takes it to another level. Almost home items were really good except the cheeses. The string type of cheese and the other soft cheese were very very salty. The flatbread that came on the side was also unbelievably soft! The best part about that was the zatar that they gave along with the flatbread. That zatar was so nice I could eat it on its own. We even asked for a little container to take the extras back with us. Spicy sausage and cheese Menemen was a nice surprise. It was basically scrambled eggs with the spicy sausage and cheese inside the tomato sauce. Family tried the potato stuffed flatbread (gozleme) and I think they really enjoyed it because they wiped that entire plate out.
