We had to make an unexpected trip to the ER because of a snowmobiling incident, and the staff from checking us in to the nurses and doctors were absolutely amazing in this ER! We went in on a Friday night around 7PM, had XRays taken and a split put on a hand that ended up having a broken bone until we could get home to schedule with our local doctor. This is by far the worst ER ever !!Overcharged and untreated... charged for treatments not necessary and not even performed. Went to the emergency room and was treated for what turned out to be a minor injury. I spent an hour in the ER, I received a tetanus shot and a dime size band-aid. I was discharged and paid a bill of about $200.00 dollars and gave them my insurance card. They billed my Insurance over $12,000.00. About 6 weeks later I received 3 more bills. two were from physicians which I paid, and one for over $2,000.00 that was stamped in red ink. "PAST DUE" (first I heard of it and thought it a scam) Seems they doubled billed me for a CT scan... I protested the bill and called up the billing dept. which is in the Philippines. Seems the hospital gave my personal information to someone in the Philippines outside US jurisdiction. I attempted to speak with someone local and they just blew me off. Pay what we want or else attitude. I attempted to negotiate but got nowhere even with the double billing. I asked for a cash rate but was informed I had insurance and it was too late and they in turn charged me 3 times more because I had insurance. A word of caution to anyone going to this crooked place. Ask for a cash rate for any procedure and watch the billing like a hawk. This is a scam hospital. I am fighting the double billing and the 3 times overcharge because I have insurance. CROOKS. This hospital's goal isn't health care its a scam to get into your personal finance. Go elsewhere and avoid this place! read more

Usually this health system is pretty good but I have to say when you get bills in the thousands showing you uninsured and bills your insurance which they know about at the same time it's double billing! When you go to a visit and the doctors comes in the room talking to you about your illness that you have never had and they say your one ethnicity but your obviously another that's scary! Makes me question their ability to take care of your health and well being. read more

Amazing Emergency Staff I entered the hospital March 31st with chest pain. The staff was tremendously kind and attentive. Dr. Nulf was absolutely wonderful. I was visiting from southern Michigan and was very grateful for the compassionate care I received. I wish this was my local hospital. read more

This hospital has been hiding my twisted thoracic injury since 4/29/1996.To protect the houghton county medical care facility who gave me this injury that caused me to herniate the l5 s1 disc 4 times and l4 s1 disc once and disabled me on 2/8/2019.This hospital did a MRI on 11/6/2019 and their image shows a 20 year olds spine.I got my own images else where on 5/29/2019 10/23/2019 2/21/20 3/25/20 and 7/08/20 and my spine has a curve in the thoracic.A twist in my thoracic.My l5 is hardly a disc anymore as well as my thoracic discs are almost crushed from the twist.My sacrum is pointed north but in their fake MRI is pointed south.The doctors at up calumet have for over a year denied me proper medical attention for it to protect what the medical care did to me.And they have the nerve to put me on disability for Bi polar instead of the physically disabled i am.My new doctor gave me a referral to My bellin spine team in green bay in june and i was stopped by UP HP from getting health care by a hospital that wouldn't lie for the medical care or the Upper great lakes family health center portage.UP HP says there is another surgeon in marquette that i could see and they have a MRI machine as well.So i call marquette to set up a appointment to go to marquette and told them i have my own images.Nope they call back and says physical therapy because portage sent their fake images down there.Just like the U of m That switched the CT CR SCAN i had at Aspirus on 7/12/2019 the u of m switched for calumet family health portage calumet.And instead of doing images at their hospitals wanted me to bring my discs and scans and when i got there the u of m said those are chiropractor but they switched the disc and stole a x ray with my spine bottomed out on my sacrum.And marquette would need to see them before they have me come down.My X rays.Not w/o/me.So i will email the pics of them.Delay after delay as every day the pain gets worse and my mobility lessens.I have reported this to the attorney general of michigan,The state licensing and regulatory affairs board in michigan and the health and human inspector general.But these 2 hospital systems keep their lies and fake images up w/o a fear in the world.And no one comes to help the victims of these 2 hospitals crimes. read more

The BEST hospital around! I recently had my baby there via C-section and EVERYTHING about my time there was great. ( I had my first 2 children down state in Lapeer,....I also have hospital experience in southern California and Las Vegas....by far this place has been the best ) The staff my entire pregnancy was nice, caring, and was very attentive. All the doctors and nurses in every area of specialist have been awesome. Lab workers great. Cafeteria great. Cleaning crew. Specialty assistance great. Orthopedic staff great The surgery for my C-section was clean and quick. Very up to date in their equipment and procedures. My husband, new baby, my visiting family and I were all treated great. HIGHLY recommend if you, your family, or your friends need medical attention go to Portage. The best hospital I have ever been too. read more

I never have any dissatisfaction or problems at Portage Health, except in the "Women's Health" department. English is a second language for my wife, who also does not have a driver's license and is not a particularly organized person. So I have always made her doctor appointments for her, and I usually accompany her to her appointments. She wants me to do these things to avoid misunderstandings in the doctor's office and since I know my own schedule and can immediately pick from available appointment openings on the phone. Well today I called from my workplace to make an appointment for her and the person I spoke with was rather rude. "Can your wife talk?" she asked with a skeptical, sarcastic tone. It did not come out like, "Can you put your wife on the phone?" but more like "Can your wife speak, or is she your trained monkey?" They refused to allow me to set up the appointment. I can understand that a woman's privacy rights are now considered to be higher than the bonds of marriage, and to a great degree I can agree with that. But I was not pumping them for her personal information, just trying to set up an appointment for her. What is the big secret? And this is nothing compared to the insulting treatment I suffered at the hands of Dr. Holladay a few years ago... she made it clear that she felt I was a bad and uncaring person when I merely questioned the reason for monthly ultrasounds during my wife's second pregnancy. We did not have that for our first child, and I never heard of such a thing unless something was already wrong, but she made me feel like a child-beater for even asking about it. And she kept talking over me as I spoke to her, escalating the situation until another doctor had to come in to finish the appointment. And then when our second child was born, Dr. Meyer let a bunch of wise-cracking young male interns or new staff into the room just as the baby was coming out. My wife refuses to see a male doctor, and was horrified to have strange men in the room at that vulnerable moment. I was not too pleased about it either, at that special/memorable time for us. My wife is sure she never signed any paper allowing it, though as I said she has some language issues and might have accidentally signed something. Well I would give 2 stars for OB/GYN, but don't want to completely tar and feather the rest of the Portage Hospital crew. read more

TERRIBLE NO ANTIBIOTICS OR PAIN KILLERS FOR CUT OFF FINGERTIPS My son caught two fingertips in machinery. Happily the bone was fine, but Dr. Ranschke in the ER simply glued them closed and sent us home without pain killers or antibiotics. After three nights of waking up, I called for even a few painkillers, but was denied. Infection set in of course, so we had to deal with that. All those nerve endings...OUCH!! read more

I spent 4 days here battling pneumonia and the nurses, doctors, and all other staff were very compassionate and attentive. I also go here 3 times a week for wound-care and I really like the physical therapists who treat me. read more

Let me start by saying that Im not a negative feedback kind of guy, but when it comes to people making my wife feel like dirt then I get ticked off. My wife and I went in today for our second pregnancy appointment. Our normal Doctor (who is great) was unavailable for earlier in the week and we had to reschedule with a different Doctor for today. My wife has had a very difficult pregnancy but has been trying very hard to stay healthy and eat whenever possible, yet our Doctor today just grilled her and made her feel absolutely terrible. I was too shocked to really say much at the time, but this Doctor clearly thought we had no clue and she felt she must "inform my wife" of her mistakes. Telling a first-time pregnant woman (who is also very timid and nervous about the pregnancy) that she has been "treating the unborn baby as if she was not feeding a child whom she was babysitting" is very poor form. My wife and I have been doing everything we can and we already know all the proper procedures from speaking with doctors and professionals. I wish hospitals would do something about people like this... The way she treated my wife is entirely unprofessional, I'm surprised that she ever was able to become a doctor.. They must not teach common sense in med school. There are far better ways to provide help and give advice than to berate and try to scare a kind and loving young lady who would do anything to help the baby. End of rant. read more

Portage Health gives me a vibe that I'm not wanted there, that I'm being dealt with rather than treated. It seems as if with every visit I get on someone's nerves, and it's with someone different every time while the rest are fine. The first thought in my mind was that maybe it's something I'm doing. Maybe I was being unprofessional without realizing, or something else completely. Eventually I learned to be a robot when going there, with nothing subjective to what I say, nothing but answers to the questions I'm asked, no eye contact, just sit and be processed. The theory I had was that maybe the staff was jaded or stressed out, maybe had some bad experiences with men (they're mostly women) or whatever. That doesn't justify letting it spill over to the patients but maybe I could have a hand in the situation. Well, that didn't work either. There was an improvement but I still apparently got on someone's nerves... plus I got misdiagnosed with dysthymia from the robot approach. Feels like I'm being set up to fail. This doesn't happen at the dentist's office, or anywhere else for that matter. From here it would seem that the best solution, if any, would be to find another group to go to or not go to the Dr. unless really necessary- but that was the approach to begin with. The experience with the doctors themselves is a lot better than the above-described. They are professional and their MDs come from legitimate schools. My only complaint with the Drs is that I've had a lot of issues which where brought up, they would run some expensive tests which would show nothing, then no follow-up to figure it out, and after a few years of research and experimentation I'd eventually figure out what it was on my own, and it would turn out that the issue could have been resolved with very simple questions like "what have you been eating lately" or even "is there anything you've been doing differently lately" etc rather than expensive scans. Haven't been to a lot of different doctors so I don't know how this would stack up to other groups. read more

A poorly run hospital with a large staff turnover and many inferior doctors. The better health system is Aspirus, about 20 miles north, with a more caring staff and far better choice of doctors. read more
