There always seems to be a bit of line waiting both lunchtimes and in the evenings which speaks to their products. Their cod and haddock is always cooked deliciously crispy in batter and the portions of thick chips are crazily generous. Mrs G and I typically visit once most weeks - two pieces of fish and one regular chips - even then between the two of us we only manage to eat half the chips!! Why only 4 stars Brian? Well my FAVORITE fish is Rockfish (actually a small shark) - IMO the BEST fried fish on the planet (try it you will love it). They have some meal deals on so keep an eye out for them as they do change occasionally. It gets really busy on Fridays and Saturdays so be prepared to queue but it is well worth it. The prices are very reasonable and you get a decent portion. There is also a bandit machine to play whilst you are waiting. You can park outside the chip shop or there is a little car park to the left, but it is only little so you have have trouble turning around.

This is Mrs. G's favorite chippie and it is only 7-8 minutes drive from our home in the UK and so we are regulars. She always takes the haddock, she like the skin on her fish (not me!) and I always have to ask to have the chips briefly re-fried (which they gladly do) to make them a little crispy. For both of us otherwise the chips are just too soggy. The prices are good (last night all the food we could eat (and more!) for 8 pounds or less than $12. The staff are friendly and warm, the food always "fresh" (if fried food can ever be considered fresh!?) and we are will be regulars for a long time I am sure So why is it only 3 stars for me: 1. It is small, nowhere to sit - so you HAVE to take your meal to go and the door is always wide open no matter how cold it is outside (so I assume the ventilation inside not sufficient) 2. I have to compare to my 5 star reviewed best of the best "Georges Tradition" in DE73 5XE next to the Co-Op, but that is 25 minutes drive away. At Georges you can sit inside in comfort, spotless surroundings and the choices for fish etc are much greater - but a long drive..... Will we be back - yes!

They have fish (of course), fish cakes, various pies, sausages plus vegetarian offerings. Despite being small (and no seating to eat in) it is adequate for fast food. Enough space to park while you are being served. Tonight Mrs G and I lost track of time and were not in the mood to cook at home again so I decided on this less healthy but convenient option. Mrs G had haddock while I had a large sausage and we shared an order of chips )fries for our US brethren) - more than we could possibly eat between the two of us! Hillcrest is extremely popular because of its great reputation, and on occasion, queues stretch around the inside of the shop and out onto the steps outside! The fish and chip portions here are huge, but unless you are very hungry or there is a group of you, a standard portion is ample. If you're feeling adventurous, try the family portion! Not only are the portions large, the food is very tasty. The prices are reasonable, and the service is fast and efficient. Hillcrest also serves other fish shop staples like kebabs and chicken.
