a woman pouring a glass of wine

I love wine, and I love cheese. That is all. ... ... Okay, I guess I should pad this out a little bit more for those wanting content. I could write a poem, but I lack the attention span to make them work. Roses are red Is that the door? I'm hungry. Girls? Or I can talk about wine and cheese. I'm shocked we missed this place on our first run through Naramata. The previous trip involved 60 wineries over a week, so I think we can be excused for skipping the odd one. As names go, Upper Bench sounds sports related but isn't; that would be ironically claimed by the summarily named Top Shelf Winery a few miles south, a place whose logo is a literal hockey mask. Top Shelf, Upper Bench, it's an understandable confusion. One is hockey themed which instilled little confidence as we drove by, the other pairs wine with cheese, which you would have to fight to keep me away from. Upper Bench was the first location we visited this day (after a failed attempt at Township7 minutes earlier). An adorable dog shied away from us, though fought through it occasionally due to an overpowering desire to play. When inside, we discovered an undersized but effective tasting room rationing nearly equal space for wine and cheese. Both are worth trying, and both are worth buying. The location is effective, though not wowing pretentious viticulture fanboys. We were in and out quickly with loaded stock. I could not recall the specific cheese procured as it was ingested not long after. As for wine, I scored the Zweigelt 2015 and a Yard Wine (a blend of Cab Franc and Merlot). My friend also picked up a Zweigelt, claiming it one of the best of that varietal he ever had. Upper Bench is more a typical winery in Naramata. It doesn't boast a huge lounge. It isn't world famous, but it's welcoming with reasonably priced wine you'll inevitably purchase. The host is funny and generous, and I imagine most of my group would have stayed there all day to play with that dog. I love the offerings of cheese, and this is becoming an increasing trend with wineries. I'd rather that than some pseudoscientific gimmick that does nothing to increase the quality of wine. Cheese is good. Wine is good. Upper Bench is better.

This Whole Foods is a health food store, not a gourmet store; it's smaller than the smallest Whole Foods in Vancouver, which means it's less than a quarter the size of a "real" Whole Foods. If you're looking for a few specialty items that you can't get anywhere else, you may be in luck. There's a huge selection of vitamins, a good assortment of gluten-free and other specialty health food-type ingredients, and a very large bulk food department. What you won't find are the goodies that make the full-size Whole Foods so tempting, and so dangerous. Very few preprepared foods, and no salad bar. A very modest selection of cheese and meats. A selection of baked goods commendable mainly for offering wheat-free options. A couple of aisles' worth of boxed and canned goods. And one more note: we accidentally bought milk that was 3 days past its expiration date. So do check the dates on all purchases before hitting checkout.

Unless you hate cheese, which is kind of unbelievable to me, but even if you do because you fell into a big pot of melted cheese when you were young, almost drowned, and now get shivers every time you smell cheese, you should still make a stop here. This farm is owned by a family from Holland, who came to Canada without knowing anything about farming, worked many years on different farms in order to learn everything they need to know, and now they have their own farm and produce wonderful cheese. Besides the usual Gouda they have lots of other flavors, some very interesting ones. We picked up a huge piece of chili cheese (which was spicier than most other chili cheeses but not tongue numbing hot) and payed only a few dollars. And we brought back some good, homemade mustard. Again, make a stop at this place, try various cheeses, check out the other Dutch things they have in their little store, and bring home LOTS of cheese, like a whole wheel. I'm pretty sure you don't get a better deal for cheese that good anywhere else in Canada!

The pumpkin cake featured dark chocolate, a sable base, pumpkin pie custard, and passionfruit cheesecake. The pumpkin pie custard resembled the filling of a pumpkin pie and was covered by pumpkin-shaped chocolate. The passionfruit cheesecake layer was not very dominant, allowing for a well-balanced combination with the pumpkin pie custard. The sable base complemented the dessert perfectly. The apple dessert featured apple-lime compote, yuzu mousse, a white chocolate shell, and a sbrisolona cookie base. The apple-lime compote was tangy, but it blended well with the yuzu mousse, making it seriously delicious. I usually can't handle tangy desserts, but I enjoyed this one; it was that good. The sbrisolona cookie included almonds (or possibly other nuts), which added a great flavor as well. The maple pecan cube croissant was very delicious, too. A notable point was the filling; the maple flavor was delightful, leaning slightly on the sweeter side but still so good. The maple drizzle with pecans on top of the cube croissant made it even more delicious. I highly recommend this item! Without visiting Karat, my trip to Kelowna wouldn't be complete. I can't wait to visit this bakery-café to try different items.

Raised on a farm, I know what fresh milk, churned butter, fresh cream, and homesteader's cheese tastes like and there is nothing on the market that I've sampled that even comes close to it as this cheese does. The ooy gooy melt of this cheese has points for flavor and for texture and consistency. I personally love cheese and can appreciate a good cheese when I taste it. I've traveled North America, Europe and Asia - this cheese is now my choice staple cheese for all of my cheese casseroles, pizzas, cheese bread, grilled cheese sandwiches, paninis, omelettes and cheese plates. I highly recommend you testing your favorite cheddar or any other cheddar cheese product against Okanagan's Choice Cheese, and coming back and telling me what you think, yourself. I love the marble brick, for most of my favorite recipes. Please give it a try. You might just find your new favorite cheese is not just Okanagan's Choice, but your choice. As far as cheeses go it was rubbery and felt heavily processed, not what I expected from a local cheese factory. If you like Kraft cheese well that would be fine.
