The food was good, service was pleasant -- until the cafe got busy. That's when the experience soured. After finishing our meal, we were leisurely enjoying the last sips of our coffee, preparing to pay and leave. But instead of being allowed to finish on our own terms, we were asked -- quite bluntly -- to shuffle down across a table to make room for more customers. It was awkward, unnecessary, and frankly, made us feel like cattle being herded to optimise their table turnover. In all my years of dining, brunching, and travelling across multiple countries, I've never encountered a request like that in any cafe or restaurant. It completely undercut what was an otherwise good experience and left us with a bitter aftertaste -- quite literally and figuratively. To top it off, staff seemed to disappear when it came time to address the issue, save for one person who eventually surfaced to take some feedback. But by then, the damage was done. Sadly, I won't be returning. If the priority is quantity over quality of experience, I'd rather spend my time and money elsewhere.

The beef is thick and rare. The chicken, weather it be coronation, mayo & sweetcorn or any of the other varieties they do, is stacked on and accompanied by any of the salads they have on the counter. You can tell that they want their customers to be as excited about their food as they are; and I am every time I eat here. But Sandwich Sandwich isn't just about sandwiches. Perched on the counter are the most amazing soft boiled scotch eggs, sausage bakes and delicious cakes. It's almost painful to stand looking at them if you're in a cue; they look so good! Prices are pretty good with most sandwiches being between £3 and £4 to go. If you've got time to stick around they offer a pretty good breakfast, again letting you off with less than a fiver (coffee included). Said coffee is gourmet standard and prepared accordingly. A girl came to meet me and handed me a brown cardboard box with my name artfully written on it, a glass bottle of some red juice and a little cup cake. I wasn't sure if I was allowed to eat it in the Canteen, but I wasn't walking anywhere. I wanted it immediately! So I sat down, opened it up and tucked in. I chose the 'Steak on a bed of feta and beetroot with wild rocket and a homemade honey and mustard dressing, all compacted in to a toasted Sesame seed baguette' and oh my goodness, it was amazing! The steak was perfectly cooked and the feta and beetroot worked so well with the meat. I don't exactly know what the red juice was, but I'm guessing it was a homemade raspberry and mint juice - because it had raspberries and mint leaves in it - *Sherlock! Joe's Bakery is as 90's as you could ever wish for; bread stacked in the window, donuts on glass fronted shelves and a fly zapper stuck to the wall. But, as old school as it is, everything they sell is fantastic! I popped in yesterday for the first time in months and grabbed a cheeky donut and was greeted with a welcoming "alright love" by one of the staff. There's no sitting down and having a coffee and natter here, but you'll have a good chin wag while you order and walk away with some of the best baked good in Bristol. I'm a BIG fan!
