There were so many small groups of musicians each performing in little circles creating dancing, fun, and happiness amongst the thousands of people filling up 6th avenue. The local food and real culture could really be found on 46th st east of 6th ave. West of 6th was pretty lame. A few Brazilian restaurants and mexican bars too helped liven the experience. I really felt like I was at a carnival type of experience at this festival. It was awesome.

I arrived around 12:30 and left around 230. There were a ton of food stands with things like fried ice cream, chicken/beef/vegetable doughy things, mozzarella-stuffed pancakes, Brazilian crepes, smoothies, gyros, and more. There are also lots of stands with fake jewelry and cheap clothes. It was interesting to walk around and take in the culture and people's collective passion for their country. There was a concert going on with some singers that I presume are well-known among Brazilians. The music was fun to listen to! There was a long line to wait on if you wanted to enter the dance section of the concert but you could hear it all over the festival. Up 6th Ave, there were stands of companies whom I presume were the sponsors. There was a man walking around with a snake offering people to take photos with it for $10... there was a statue of Pele- awesome. The people were mostly Brazilian but there were definitely other kinds of people there so I didn't feel out of place at all. Overall, I really enjoyed exploring the culture and being a part of this. Think I'll stop by in the coming years!

There is never a cover-charge for music which is nice. The music is also extremely varied depending on the night so you are sure to find something you like. It is nice to hear such awesome local musical talents! You always meet wonderful and friendly people and can really appreciate the feeling of being in a small intimate cafe. They generally will pass around a money box with donations that go towards the artists since they aren't paid-nice to contribute if you can! The entire length of the festival was packed with families, pups and people soaking up the sun and good smells. I had just been to the Queens Night Market, and some of the same vendors were here, but the prices were significantly higher. That would be the only complaint. I guess there's inflation based on the Manhattan Local. Still a very worthy festival, and I would happily go back.

I attended their 5th annual Beer & Wine fest in Brooklyn, and you could tell they'd done this before. Check-in was a breeze. Collected my cups and drink tickets (15 pp) and was on my merry way. There was a really wide selection of beer and wine vendors. Some established favorites like Ballast Point, Montauk, and River Horse were in attendance. But I also tried some brews I never even heard of, which were great, like Highway Manor Brewing, who brought 2 sours and a saison (all delicious). There was also a VIP section with better beers, like Evil Twin and Westbrook. You needed a specially colored wristband for that, but toward the end of the festival, they took down the velvet ropes and opened it up to everyone, which was great. I definitely dropped a bunch of drink tickets there. I tried a couple of the wines, and my favorite was a random Pinot grigio. I was mostly there for the beer, but there was no shortage of wines to choose from. Food vendor selection was also better than I expected. I ended up getting BBQ from Miss Holly's Smokehouse, which was delicious. All in all, a pretty fun event!

Some pros are; the event is for charity, environmentally caring, there is a good vibe there, great view by the water, not too crowded, and you sometimes see discounted tickets. Some cons are; some samples are small, some places run out of food, limited samples (you buy ticket books) long lines, overall value. Will I go back next year? Depends on what else is happening that weekend.

I found out about the event through Yelp (yay!) and bought tickets for 8 tastings and 4 beverages. The space was chock full of restaurants selling their best, sponsors hawking their products, and hungry hungry Brooklynites. I arrived around 2 pm and stayed just until it started raining. Lucky for me, I was able to use all my coupons in time! Staff were fantastic overall, with big smiles and enthusiastic attitudes. Now, to the eats: Brooklyn Cupcake - fantastic generous ladies who are passing out the mini chocolate, french toast, red velvet, and vanilla cupcakes like they're going out of style. Brooklyn Floss - root beer cotton candy, a lovely lady spinning the sweets, and lots of happy people in the "smile spot" as they are mystified by their growing cloud of sugar. The Brooklyn Star - winner of the longest line, The Brooklyn Star passed out cheddar cheese waffles with fried chicken, cabbage slaw, and mashed potatoes. Tasty, creative, and pretty. Dirck the Norseman passed out beef brisket and pulled pork with soft buns. Oh so meaty, rich goodness, with a good portion size. Pies and Thighs offered their fried chicken on a biscuit with hot sauce and sweet creamy mayo, which while tiny, is still rich enough to clog your arteries. Maison Premiere was giving out cocktails and oysters on the half shell for a ticket - a nice clean and crisp alternative to the nearby bar fare. Phin & Phebes had six ice cream flavors to sample - or you could get three for a ticket! The ginger cookie and Vietnamese coffee were incredible. Rosamunde Sausage Grill had the second longest line. The Andouille was really solid and they had really fun condiments like wasabi and spicy mayos and cheese sauces Teddy's Bar and Grille had AMAZING beignets. Two Door Tavern had salsa rubbed fried chicken wings - creative, well executed, and delish. Yelp offered a fun gift basket and the usual fun knick knacks- I hope I win! There are probably more that I can't remember. BUT it was such a fun day with very cool people. I reserve a star however - my ticket came with four drink tickets. I can't drink alcohol. So I got lots and lots of free sodas, but definitely not enough to justify the cost of the tickets. I am mollified in that my purchase has made the dream of building the town hall closer, buuuuut may buy one off tickets next year for the food and not drinks.

I'm giving this spot five stars despite a less than optimal experience. Because I know the mission…read moreand the work of the place, despite things not going well for me. What didn't go well for me: I showed up within posted business hours, but the "director" was not there, so the second floor was not open. Technically the whole place was locked up, but a housekeeper let me in. Pease don't penalize her; she kept an eye on me the whole time and kept me on just the first floor and essentially kept my haul uptown from being a loss. The first floor is a basic education about Malcolm X and his family/wife/mother/travels. The upper level contains some other exhibits, which I didn't get to see, and the ballroom, where he delivered his last words before being assassinated. This center educates, does public and private tours, helps the community. The historic significance of the site cannot be overstated. It's free of charge. The site itself does great work and demonstrates such amazing value and investment to the Harlem community. I just didn't get to see it all in action. Another day maybe . . . they already have several community programs scheduled for this month and the months ahead.
