My husband, sister and I visited Verjus with the hopes of enjoying a bottle or two of wine as well as some heavy tapas. When I mentioned seeing the tapas menu the bartender got confused and said they only offer a small selection of cheese and charcuterie at the bar, but nothing cooked. We attempted to make a reservation at the restaurant upstairs, but unfortunately they were booked solid. We each ordered a glass of wine and split several plates of prosciutto and cheese at the bar. Everything was nice, but we were looking for dinner and the bar was a bit warmer than I would have preferred so after we finished our wine and cheese we ventured off elsewhere. The GNOCCHI was to die for...the pieces were small and ever-so-slightly crispy on the outside. 2. The SPICY FRIED CHICKEN (yes, we order manfood staples when my bf is with me) was so juicy on the inside yet crispy on the outside. The chicken was bursting with flavor. 3. The FLANK STEAK with CHIMICHURRI sauce was surprisingly tender and flavorful. 4. We also had the CELERY ROOT GYOZA. This was hands down the best food that we had in Paris. I can only imagine what the upstairs restaurant serves! The bartender was super cool and was helpful in recommending wine pairings with our food. She poured samples to make sure that we were happy with our wine selections. She also speaks perfectly good English if you're wondering! We had to try a croissant and it did not disappoint (I ordered another one because it was so good). I have to say the flaky, buttery, pull apart goodness of these croissants is on another level. The bread with butter and jam was amazing too and we couldn't get enough. The omelet came out a little later and it was really good. It's totally different from an American omelet as far as taste and ingredients but it was still great and with everything we were satisfied. Their cappuccino was perfect as well and tasted exactly how a cappuccino should. All in all, I loved this place as my first cafe in Paris. It gave us a chance to people watch and enjoy a light breakfast but I want to come back and try their lunch and dinner as well. Upon arrival we were able to grab two bar seats that just opened up. It was fortunate, as this is a very small bar with only two employees. That said, service was quick and friendly. The drinks came pretty quick and were well made. An interesting touch is that use micro-clothespins to hold the garnish of each drink perfectly in place on the rim of a given glass. It seemed silly for a few drinks, but really helped some of the drinks to present beautifully. We found the drinks were strong and the small crowd fun, but as we were trying to visit all of Paris in 22 hours, we had to move on to the next spot. I have yet to try their old-fashioned but I am eager to return to try the rest of their menu. They have croques (basically warm sandwiches), charcuterie/cheese plates, and a very good, massive burrata that you should not take on by yourself. Service was friendly. Make a reservation if you can. I believe they do not take reservations after a 8 or 9pm but that may have changed.

The booking was originally for 15 people so they had a few high tables in the middle of the place reserved for us, I was immediately struck by the cool ambience of the place - it's very classy and also feels totally Parisian! I was easily pleased (my wine was pink, that's all I need) but my friends got to try a few different reds before picking a bottle. We also ordered a planche mixte which comprises of charcuterie and cheese, and all of it was totally excellent! There was some smoked ham, salami, three different types of cheese, cherry tomatoes and cornichons, as well as honey to have with the softer one of the cheeses and we scoffed the lot. There was also copious amounts of bread - when we asked for more we were quickly brought some which was brilliant, I like it when places appreciate how important bread is! There ended up being probably at least 20 of us because a few people showed up by surprise, and the staff were again very accommodating about this - bringing extra chairs and still managing to be very attentive despite how many of us there were! I guess they're having some kind of identity crisis, but I have a business card that has it as the latter, so for me, it's Dixime Degre. We would never have found this place if it hadn't been for Ann and Peter, a couple from Boston who we met on line at the Musee d'Orsay. They were staying in the area of this restaurant and told us about it. I'm glad they did. (HI Ann and Peter... if you see this!) We searched it out and finally found it, because it not in the 'normal' tourist area. Once we did find it, had we not known about the food within, we would most likely have passed it right by and not given it a second thought. But this was indeed our destination and we walked in. Well, we wanted to walk in, but "Mickey"... who was sweeping up told us they don't open until 6pm. (It was 5:30) So we walked around for 30 minutes and made our way back. The waiter (owner?? - Mickey) greeted us and sat us. Now this place is certainly not glamorous. It's early Spanish, Bohemian... artsy, but truly very interesting. Mickey is also an added 'attraction' and adds to the appeal of Dixieme Degre. Truly a great waiter who makes you feel at home. We started off with some fried cheese. (Camembert and fromage de chèvre). As if cheese isn't bad enough for you... they gotta fry it up. But good grief, the cheeses were SOOOO good... along with more of France's amazing baguettes. My wife had the duck confit which she enjoyed a lot. I had a 'special' of grilled calamari with green beans and grilled potatoes. YUM! Really, really good. Mickey said the calamari had just come in and it was his favorite. I took him at his word and it was cooked perfectly. So nice and tender. We also uncorked a nice bottle of Bordeaux which went along with both dinners. We had a very yummy 'lava' cupcake (with ice and whipped creams) Again... SOOOO good! I do know that we left there very surprised and happy. Happy that we took the advice of Ann and Peter who we met on that line to the Museum.
