uPUBLIC has multiple locations around the downtown area and the 907 address is just one. Actually that is their main office and audio studio. Across the street at 912 is their main production studio and on Central is another office. I went to all three offices today as a part of an orientation to become a uPUBLICAN which is what they call their members. They also have another location which is their prop warehouse, supposedly the most props of anywhere in the state. It is also being set up to produce a reality TV show. All of the locations had great people, facilities, and some great equipment. While at the Central Avenue location I added the spot to Yelp so hopefully that location will show up soon. uPUBLIC produces the content for ABQ cable channels 26 and 27. 26 is going to become exclusive sports and the other non-sports content on 26 will be migrated to channel 27. uPUBLIC is going through a metamorphisis and the orientation today for both old and new members was an introduction to how the intend to do things from here on out. A tour of the facilities was given as well as a talk by all the various department heads. After this we will begin taking classes on a variety of topics and hands on learning the use of the sound and video equipment. Who knew that ABQ had a walk of fame? Not me, for sure. This nondescript building on 3rd street might be the best kept media/film secret in town. The stars are there, on the ground as you enter the building, and within you'll find a busy hive of peeps who are working to change the vibe of the 505. Come as you are. The coffee is already brewed. From what I understand, uPublic supports a wealth of cinema and local telecasts, The Morning Brew being the biggie, with local personality Larry Ahrens at the helm (and his contemporary, Erin Muffoletto, rocking the locally-known). The studio itself is pretty simplistic: one side typically features a tall table, the other a couch where Larry (grand as a skyscraper) looms over the guests and somehow makes them feel at home. There you are, sandwiched between two really great personalities that really have chemistry. And let's not forget Susan, Larry's wife, who watches each segment with abandon. My God Mother. Upublic wants to do 2 things: 1) Destroy the historic model of public access TV, and 2) make money. Breaking the city contract, it has never (to my knowledge) begun to meet its contract requirements for original (first run) programming. It is also full of commercials and replaces PSAs with for-profit advertising as often as possible. In the past several months it has abandoned Comcast channel 26 to ProView Sports. That channel now runs sports programming, although I doubt it meets the city contract obligation for original (first run) programming. In 2013, uPublic abandoned Comcast channel 96 - an education channel - to JenTV. Jenny is a young girl showing top 20 music videos programming. Why uPublic would do that is a mystery. I suspect they couldn't make money with the channel and didn't want to be bothered with it. [As I write this review at 0930 JenTV has only a black screen.] Its flagship program, Morning Brew with Larry Ahrens, is all happy talk. They refuse to talk about anything serious happening in ABQ. I know. I tried to get on their program and was met with deafening silence. This hour show is run 3 hours in the morning, once at 10pm, and sometimes in the middle of the night. That one show represents 16-20 percent of all uPublic programming! The city of Albuquerque took the contract away from Quote-UnQuote that had run the station for 3 decades. It was one of the top 5 public access stations in the US. They had a terrific education channel. The uPublic programming is a shambles. It is full of reruns and programming off the Internet. The station management is also incapable of updating and maintaining its website and even its Facebook page is out of date. Finding a program schedule took me months. Their website, http://www.upublic.tv is currently down. The city connived to award uPublic, a company with no experience running TV channels, the contracts, perhaps because it was embarrassed by the high quality local programming produced by QUQ that sometimes was not flattering to the city. No problem with uPublic. The company won't produce anything that isn't canned and filtered through uPublic management. And, remember, uPublic is all about the money.
