I started attending the functional fitness, and then cardio kickboxing, classes around Summer 2023 to help recover from a couple postpartum injuries. Fast forward 6+ months and I honestly think that I'm in the best shape of my life...or at least since high school. I recently turned 40 and because of my workouts at Urban Jungle I have no mobility issues; the creakyness I was starting to get is gone! I can easily play on the floor with my kids and sprint after them. On my 40th birthday I was also able to do 40 pushups, I huge accomplishment for me, and 100% attributable to the urban jungle workouts. I've been attending Urban Jungle for 4 years now and I can honestly say I'm happy to call it home. I've been practicing JiuJitsu for about 10 years and have been to several gyms and I felt right at home once I started at Urban. Top notch gym! Tony and Michelle are great people and will teach you! I have been going there off an on since 2003. I remember my first day of Brazilian jiu Jitsu class I was so excited to meet Tony. I knew his background and knew he trained with the Gracie's. Tony is such a great teacher. He takes his time and works well with students. He is one of the most humble teachers I have ever met. This place is a few blocks from my house, so I don't know why it's taken me a year to finally try it out. You can try all of the classes free for a week, but call ahead and make sure they have room for a free trial member. After your free trial, you will want to sign up fo sho. There are a variety of options, from an unlimited monthly plan, to a block pass of 15 classes for $180. This is a bargain compared to personal training, and I think the results are similar. I am in love with the kickboxing classes! They have upbeat, fun music and the hour flies by despite the pretty grueling routines. The Monday/Wednesday evening classes can get pretty crowded but are good for beginners -- there's no pad holding or partnered moves, so you can go at your own pace. There are folks of all ages and experience levels. The Friday/Saturday classes involve kicking and punching pads. The Saturday circuit class will DESTROY YOU. In an awesome way. read more

Love this place!! Nothing but the highest praises for this gym, Tony and Michelle are welcoming and knowledgeable, from Jiu Jitsu to kickboxing, there seems to be something for everyone. Everyone seems to be encouraging and accepting of people of all levels. The jiu jitsu classes can be intense and challenging but rewarding. I've even peeped into the advanced classes, and was pretty fun just to watch them work. Seems like everyone here works to make everyone else better, a good learning atmosphere of friendly challenge by leaving the ego behind. While I haven't gone to one of Michelle's kickboxing classes yet, from what I hear it kicks.your.butt into shape, which is what I look for in a class. I've gone to too many "kick boxing" classes at other places that you don't feel like you're working out enough to break much of a sweat or is kind of boring. So I've been encouraged to try her's out, and I'm looking forward to going. If you just want to try it out, take them up on the free week pass, which apparently is good for all their classes. I guess I'm going over 6 months being a member at Urban Jungle, and I can truly say going there has changed my life. I used to do a kind of hatha yoga prior to this, but after a while, I felt like I had plateau'd and was no longer receiving real, tangible, physical results. I moved neighborhoods and upon my fiance's colleague's recommendation, tried out Urban Jungle, or as I call, it, "UJ." And I. loved. it. Aside from the physical soreness, more importantly, I felt empowered, and after one particularly grueling session, even got an emotional release I had never received from yoga. It goes to show, different strokes for different folks, and more and more, I felt this was for me. Even better, from my pre-UJ days, I've gone down 2 sizes and have lost 10 pounds, though I'm still working on losing more. Even better, I improved my muscle tone, and in pictures, some family members have said I look "toned" :) Class offerings are kardio kickbox (MWF-Sa), boot camp and/or fighter fitness (TBA), MMA, Basic and open mat Jiu Jitsu, and Jiu Jitsu for kids ("tiny tots"). For beginners, it is advised to come to classes offered Mon-Thurs only, and please please come in 15-30 minutes ahead so 1) you can introduce yourself to the instructor and he/she can give you a heads-up on what to expect, and 2) you can get a good spot, especially in the evenings, when classes get super packed, as much as 70+ people in class sometimes! Fri-Sat kickbox classes are usually not advised for beginners as they usually involve more knowledge, like how to handle pads and receive kicks/punches, and sometimes a very grueling circuit workout. Also, for Fri-Sat classes, once you're late, you will most likely not be allowed to take the class. So regulars, be at LEAST 5 minutes early (earlier is better, though I am guilty of being there just on the dot, or barely!) They also do personal training sessions; to cut costs, it would be great to go with colleagues/friends to a session together and learn together and increase camaraderie. Besides, working towards a common fitness goal is always good :) There are also 3-hour self-defense workshops that they hold for women, typically once a month. This is highly recommended; you get notes, and learn good skills--not only physical (borrowed from Jiu Jitsu), but also tactics to avoid such an encounter, etc. For outfitting yourself, etc, they have merchandise for sale such as mouthguards, duffel bags, towels, shirts, beanies, gi's, and so on. My 19 year old son had signed up and paid for an extended membership for the jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts program, and although he really enjoyed the instruction, and learned some good techniques, he had to stop after only about two months because he suffered an injury during the fighter fitness class performing the squats while holding another person over his shoulders. This injury has led to constant and sometimes severe back pain and discomfort. A huge WARNING people, take extra care with the actions you are asked to perform, they can cause serious injury if not performed correctly. read more

I started attending classes at the Urban Jungle (UJ) in July 2012 for approximately 5.5 months before I took a 6-month hiatus. But it wasn't until May 31st of 2013 that I returned to the UJ, this time fully committed to meeting my fitness goals and to dedicatedly learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). As I walked through the door, fearful of condemnation for slacking off and gaining weight, my fears were immediately alleviated when the instructor, Jesse, flashed me a wide smile and gave me a huge thumbs up. This example highlights something characteristic of the UJ, there is no negative judgment and only enthusiastic support of its members. My expectations as it pertains to quality of instruction are stringent and I found in UJ a place devoted to emotional and physical health, great instruction in BJJ and MMA, and an unmistakable sense of community and support from the owners, Tony and Michelle, and the members alike. The UJ caters to a large variety of individuals and as such, the owners and members are as welcoming and attentive to the workout novice as they are to the elite martial artist. Tony promotes discipline and respect on the mats while retaining a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Also and importantly, Tony treats women like equals on the mat. Michelle is the director of the fitness and cardio classes at the UJ. She is absolutely top brass when it comes to fitness and she and Tony make me labor to keep my review short and sweet. The routines and circuits are intense and modifiable for differing fitness levels. Her classes are incredibly creative which staves off boredom and fitness plateaus. Michelle is an ardent protector of our joints, and she consistently provides us information regarding the rationale and mechanisms of action in the different exercises she has us perform. Under the tutelage of Tony and Michelle and the almost intoxicating support of they, the UJ employees, and the UJ members, I have lost 36 pounds safely and have increased my fitness and strength by leaps and bounds. It may be important to some readers of this review to know that I am not an early 20-something year old with endless hours each day available to workout, but rather I am a 38-year old woman with a full time high-stress professional career. I say this to emphasize that reaching fitness goals is possible for anyone willing to put the work in. While injury is inherent to any physical activity (especially combat sports), Tony and Michelle systematically promote responsible and conscientious practice. And then, as if all the aforementioned details weren't enticing enough, there are aspects of the UJ so unique that they should be mentioned. One of the things that I really appreciate about the UJ is its active commitment to the community. They provide self-defense workshops for women multiple times per year, conduct anti-bullying workshops for children, host practices for wrestling teams, support other athletes (like Derby players), and donate their services to great causes like the MS-150, just to name a few. I have been going to Urban Jungle for 6 months now, and I love it! I participate in all classes offered, but mainly Jiu-Jitsu; it's female friendly. The Kardio Kickbox class is awesome, and the circuit Friday and Saturday will get you ripped. It's total body. Kardio MMA is for those who want to put on the boxing gloves, and go at it.. The gym also offers great boot camps like; Fighter Fitness (if you want to train like the guys in the UFC - this is what you need!) and Bikini Boot Camp (just in time for summer ladies) Jiu Jitsu is for kids too! I'm hooked! I go every Monday and Wednesday to their cardio kickboxing when I can. Michelle and the front desk guys make you feel so welcomed when you come in. The first class was a little tricky to get a hang out because everything is almost choreographed. Everyone knows what she's talking about and then just follows her commands. I'm getting the hang of it though. It's not a kickboxing only class guys, so don't think you'll be coming in here to just learn. It's a fast paced, sweat producing hour of awesomeness. I've been a member of Urban Jungle (a Royce Gracie school) since Dec 09. During that time my fitness, confidence, and self-defense level has progressed steadily and effectively. Tony and Michelle Torres-Aponte are gracious and humble people that really take an interest in their students. The level of teaching is unmatched in Houston and its an original Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu school (who visits 1-2 times a year). Some get students get the opportunity to be promoted, personally, by Royce! Whether it's just a workout your looking for, a place to learn Gracie Jui Jitsu, or train MMA, you'll be hard pressed to find a better place.Keep in mind they have 3 affiliates too. Cypress, Magnolia, and now Mont Belvieu. So if the Heights isn't practical, maybe the other locations are. The kids classes are fantastic and I've watched firsthand the progress and change in many of the kids going from timid kids that get picked on, to bullyproof, confident children that know how to handle themselves and other kids in a practical, NON-VIOLENT way. The women's self-defense is fantastic as well. In both the kids and women's programs utilize and teach Gracie techniques that are designed for and effective on the street and real life situations. When you walk in, check your ego at the door, leave the "tough guy" attitude at home and be ready to learn and be humble. The instructors and students are very welcoming and willing to help each other grow and progress in each of the defense systems. If your serious about fitness and self-defense and you really want to learn, you won't be disappointed! Go check them out! Oh, and if you're interested in top level Jiu Jitsu, they have frequent seminars with world renown black belts teach seminars several times a year like Royce, Rener, Rodrigo Gracie, Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu, and many more. I stared at Urban Jungle with my husband about 3 years ago. We were looking for a place to exercise that gave us good work out for a reasonable price. We did the free first week and I loved it immediately! Michelle's kardio kickboxing classes are a fun, high energy workout that keep me on my toes, sweating and moving the whole time!! I had some medical issues in the past year and my number one goal was to get back to kicking pads as soon as possible. I have been a part of many different workout programs/gyms over the years and UJ is by far my favorite place to go. My 3 children have been attending Urban Jungle for 4 plus years now.. My oldest son has an extended membership including Jiu-jitsu and fighter fitness. My son really enjoys fighter fitness - he has built strength and durability along with cardio and weight lifts. What can I say? This place is the best! My son has been training jiu-jitsu here for over 5 years; he's 14 now. He also take their fighter fitness and mma class. He's here anywhere from 14-20 hours a week and there's no other place he'd rather be. We don't live near the dojo but my whole world revolves around making sure my son is here when he needs/wants to be and I'm happy to do it. He mentioned to me that yes, he has schoolmates that he likes but his real friends, his family, are from the jungle. How could I not make sure he's there? The environment they've spent 20 years creating is priceless. This is their passion and it shows. The instructors are awesome and down to earth and I trust them with my son's safety and life. I've witness other instructor's teaching styles from other schools at tournaments and count my blessings every day that we have Urban Jungle. It's never too late to start your BJJ journey. I started about nine months ago at the age of 50. I was over weight with high blood pressure. I was at the point to where my doctor wanted me on medication. I watched my friend and co-worker Jim slim down, calm down and gain muscle. I asked him what he was doing (or taking) to make him look fifteen years younger. Jim invited me to Urban Jungle and it has changed my life. I have lost twenty pounds and feel beter than I have in several years. At my last doctor's visit I went in with "Gi rash" amd bruises all over my body and my doctor asked me if I had been in a car crash. When I told him I was taking Jiu- Jitsu he laughed and said "well keep it up, your numbers are better than they have been in years". Tony is a great teacher/instructor. He spends time with every student and seems to have eyes in the back of his head..he see's everything! I have really enjoyed the team atmospehere at Urban Jungle and I can honestly say that all the higher or upper belts are willing and able to assist you. Don't be concerned about your age, weight or stature. I am 6'2 and was weighing 250 when I started. I was immeadiately humbled by someone in class who is considerably smaller than I am (thanks Daniel!). By the way, he continues to humble me on the mat but is one of the first guys in class that will stop what he is doing to assist you with a technique. Relson Gracie said it best " The big, strong, tough guy goes to class, and he keeps getting tapped by the skinny, technical guy. It begins to change him. It makes him humble. I started UJ about three years ago. At the time, I had not worked out years. I was out of shape and a bit overweight. I have always been a fan of the sport of MMA and I thought I would give actually training a try, at the suggestion of my wife who used to pass the facility on her way home from work everyday. I loved it from the first class! Even though I had no martial arts background when I started, I decided I wanted to train and take an amateur MMA fight. I have been going to Urban Jungle for a couple months now and I have to say that I have never had better results. My partner and I have been doing the cardio kickboxing class twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays and the pads class on Friday. We also took the 6 week boot camp on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Until we joined Urban Jungle we did the 24 Hour thing and had a home gym and nothing has been more rewarding then the workouts at Urban Jungle.
