    Dan L.

I'm in Houston for work, so I dropped in for class tonight. I can't recommend this place enough. Jessica Flowers is a 5 time IBJJF world champion and an excellent instructor. I hope to be able to train here again before I leave town.

Having…read moremoved from Iowa City, I was looking for a new school to train in Houston.I was one of the first members of my previous club (Hawkeye BJJ) and had trained there for over 10 years. I was really hoping to find a similar friendly training atmosphere. I found it at Revolution Houston. Everyone who trains here is nice, friendly, has really good technique, and respect for sport of Jiu Jitsu. The instructors are first class and have a ton of experience. Head instructor Jeff Messina, is a former pro MMA fighter, and National Guardsman. He is a BJJ black belt and Judo Black belt. Jaime, who teaches the beginner class BJJ class is a BJJ brown belt and Judo Black belt. Mike and Dinko are the other instructors who are brown belts. Jeff is well connected and has been in the sport for years, so there are always other black belts, and professional fighters (UFC included) dropping in. There are at least 2 classes (if not 3) scheduled each day, making it convenient to fit any schedule. I personally make it a point to attend 3 classes a week, and can easily do that with my crazy schedule. There are two locations, one in downtown Houston where I mostly train. The facility is big enough to fit a class of 30-40. The other is a much bigger location in Katy. You can train at either facility. The coaches are really interested in you becoming a better, fitter, practitioner and person. Being new to Houston, I have made a lot of good friends at Revolution. There is also Muay Thai offered, I don't do it, but some of the guys train BJJ as well, and I know their Muay Thai is phenomenal, if you want to train both. Both adult and kid's classes are offered. This is a very safe and clean environment to train in. Don't think twice about it, this is one of the best locations to train at in Houston (if not Texas).

Had the chance to "let" my 12 year old Monster-in-the-making secure submissions on his old man (me) at a 3 to 1 ratio (in his favor lol). It is pretty well known that BJJ just plain works. P.S.: I said "let" only because I agreed to get on the mat with him... I didn't "allow" him to get a submission until we had been at it (rolling) for about 20 min... and that was after five min of stretching and ten minutes of informal drills. He finally wore me out toward the end and got his last one (of 3, after I basically gave up, gassed out (yes I need to take better care of myself), but he got the first two righteously. BTW I weigh 218 he weighs 138. Great sport/martial art, great place to learn it. Thanks team!

Then I discovered The Edge here on Yelp and I love it! The classes are small and focused. Some days are cardio based, other days are weight based, so you're always getting a balanced workout. Tim is a fantastic instructor. He gives due attention. Teaches proper form. He's also methodical about which stretching we do, knowing most people have jobs sitting most of the day. The workouts never get boring! Tim also teaches different Martial Arts classes (Mousel's), as well as Women's Self Defense. Whether you want to lose weight or have more strength or just be fit, there is so much variety offered here to help achieve your personal goals!

The best thing about Tim's classes is that he pushes you to do your best, but never so hard that you'll never want to go back. I really look forward to attending every time. Participants in the classes range from people just starting their fitness journey to those that attend 6 days a week. It doesn't matter what level you're at, it's never intimidating. Everyone there is very encouraging, which makes for a very fun experience. A typical day in the class is running the stairs outside for about 10-15 minutes, then strength training exercises for 20 minutes, then abs and stretching for the last 10-15 minutes. One of the things that Tim does well is mixing up the exercises so that we're not doing the same things over and over again. Also, he incorporates some martial arts and crossfit type exercises which adds some fun to it. I can't say enough good things about Tim's classes. Do yourself a favor and give it a try. You won't regret it. Edit: Don't be intimidated by all the pictures of the girls in the classes. There's a good amount of guys that attend the classes as well!

But I don't really mind being on the receiving end of some punches. Group was friendly and welcoming. Coach though was behaving strange and impatient to say the least. Very unreasonable and kept on repeating how he trained so many champions (check their website too for more big stories). He reminded me of people I met in office that were about the have a burn-out. Really disliked his attitude. I must have pressed his ego-button or something, pretty sure he did not like me either. Never had issues at 3 previous gyms, where I have trained for 28 years in total. The first thing that drew me to actually contacting Midtown MMA was the 30 day free trial. The first thing that drew me to actually showing up was getting a call from Chris about an hour after I submitted my form online. The first thing that drew me to sign up full time was after the first class when I realized that Midtown MMA was more than I could have hoped for! After a few short months, Midtown MMA has helped boost my confidence in my physical and mental ability to defend myself. You build on the physical side during the first part of the class where Chris leads you through a "warm-up" which is more like a mini boot-camp that leaves you with a good burn. The mental and physical side is continually built through the second portion of class as you work on muscle memory routines, perfecting techniques, following drills, and self guided practice. The great thing about Midtown MMA is that your motivation doesn't come from someone yelling at you, it comes from the everyone else giving it there all and encouraging you to test your limits. Everyone is there to learn the proper techniques and advanced students are more than will to give and take constructive criticism when working in teams. There are a good mix of males and females of all different physical capabilities which lead to good match-ups during the drills. No one is there to judge you, I have never had that feeling even when I thought I must look pretty goofy. Chris is an awesome instructor who keeps the class relaxed but professional and directed. He's good about gauging what each student needs to focus on during the drills - technique or power - and making corrections for individual students during the drills. He is interested in the needs of the class and will reserve certain sessions to address student questions. It is easy to have a lot of respect for Chris. This helps make you accountable and give you that extra boost to show up for training on the (rare!) occasion that you may be less motivated to do so. If you decide to sign up and pay, I believe you pick a 6 month or one year program. I think it averages to about $12 a class. I'm doing this with my husband and we were able to work our a 2 for less than 2 kinda deal.

By, September I was the only woman in this time slot. In October, I was asked how I felt about them turning the class to male/female.. I had no problem. I was enjoying my classes with trainer Sergio even though the class lacked new attendees. As the holidays rolled around, I informed Sergio I would most likely not be attending until after New Years. Today is 1/8/19. After New Years, I come back to Slava and I am told Sergio is no longer an instructor and I will be in Jesse's class. Knowing the age of Sergio and being in college, I was not deterred by someone new. I quickly learned why I was later told to take the class before paying. The new instructor for their 5-6PM classes is garbage. I didn't even complete the hour because within the first half hour he told me to "practice on the bags" with no instruction. In fact he sat down on the mat looking at his phone while I spent ROUNDS of warming up. Keep in mind this is a instructed class and I was just doing something I can do by myself at a regular gym and pay less for. When I finally got fed up that the new instructor was just letting time pass, I walked over to the gym owner and asked what am I doing in this class, his new instructor was not interacting with me, he's not instructing. I was told "What do you expect?" and I had to TELL HIM "Well, it's a class! I expect interaction and to be taught something like the previous teacher did." He told me "It's your decision to pay to be here." and "You don't have to be part of this gym." With that response, I decided to no longer pay to be here. Slava boxing does not value it's members. The owner is unprofessional and rude. And for the record, during this conversation he was SMOKING! All the previous reviews are right, for owning a gym it's astounding he finds it okay to smoke inside of it. As I once enjoyed being part of this gym, I quickly learned the owner does not value the members of his gym. Previous reviews are telling and you should spend your money elsewhere.
