Me an my wife had a great Brewed in Brooklyn tour. Our prefect guide, Astrid, told us the history of brewing in Brooklyn, let us try different sorts of local beer and showed us Williamsburg and the old brewing places. We liked Brooklyn Brewery and the Well a lot! Overall it was fun and now we know the great beer spots in Brooklyn and everything about it. Would definitely recommend the tour to beer lovers and to people who want to know New York City better (it's not just Manhattan out there). read more

My wife and I did 2 different tours while on a weekend trip to NY. We did the Brooklyn Brownstone tour and the Manhattan cocktail tour. First I'll talk a little about the Brownstone tour. One of the common themes on both tours was the absolute fantastic tour guide we had - Brian Hoffman. I just can't say enough about the care and passion he demonstrated through his stories and explanations of all the different small independently owned business we visited. Not only did each place have some fantastic food or treat to try, each had a great story as well. Each business owner and or manager took the time to share their passion for the food we were trying. I would caution that you will be completely stuffed at the end so eat a light breakfast. Special mention would be D'Amico Coffee - the owner there sat with us for quite a while and told some great stories of the neighborhood. Manhattan cocktail tour - this tour was held Saturday night. Again, Brian was the tour guide on this one as well. His knowledge and great story telling made this cold evening incredibly enjoyable. The particular area was in the east village. Again the stories and histories of establishments we visited were so much fun and interesting. I can't say I liked all of the cocktails, but I did enjoy the company and atmosphere. read more

What to do on a Sunday afternoon? I'm tired of going to the movies, I'm never up early enough for brunch, and there's only so long I can sit at home and write blog entries. So last weekend, I ventured into Williamsburg for a different sort of Sunday afternoon. Instead of doing any of the usual activities, I decided to take a walking tour. I know it makes you think of tourists from the mid West, but there are lots of specialized tours out there that can really teach you something unknown and unusual about the city we love. Sure, I'm interested in New York history and East Village haunted buildings, but what I like even more is beer. So I found myself on Urban Oyster's Brewed in Brooklyn Tour. The tour starts at the Brooklyn Brewery, which ignited the revival of craft breweries in Brooklyn. You get to hear their story, see their facility, and taste their beers. Not a bad way to start a Sunday afternoon. Then you get transported to Meserole Street, right on the Bushwick border. Back in the day (the late 19th century, to be exact), this street was the home to Brewer's Row. This is where mostly German immigrants settled to create the beer supply for much of the city (and the country), thanks to the natural water supply. Just in time to soak up all the booze from the beer tasting, we stopped at Danny's Pizzeria, which has been around since the 1920's. It's an obvious choice for an Urban Oyster lunch because on the wall are pictures of the neighborhood before the word hipster was in our vocabulary. Our tour guide, David allowed us to burn off some of those calories by pushing on down Meserole. We stopped at a beutiful old church (where many of the old German brewers would worship), an untouched landmarked house from the 1880's, and a few other abandoned breweries from that time. The afternoon ended at the less historic Huckleberry Bar (it opened in 2007). We were lucky enough to sit out in the garden (this might have been the first day of the season it was opened). There we enjoyed four more beer samples, while David explained the different between each. It really was like a wine tasting, only with beer and thankfully, nobody spit anything. We also got some delicious little bites to pair with the brews. It was a great day to sit in the sun, soaking up rays, history, and alcohol. David was incredibly knowledgeable, funny, and more than eager to hold a discussion about beer. It ended up being a really fun and educational afternoon. I also had quite a buzz going and unfortunately, had to go to work. But I will tell you (even though I don't recommend this at home), it sure made work more fun. Urban Oyster also gives a tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yards and is developing future tours to excite, entice, and explore New York neighborhoods. My sister and I went on the Brooklyn Brownstone Food Tour this weekend, half-priced through a Gilt City deal. Our tour guide, Jill, was awesome -- super-friendly and knowledgeable about the neighborhoods we walked through. There were 14 people in our group and we made 7 stops along the way, visiting places like Stinky Bklyn cheese shop, One Girl Cookies and Farmacy, an old-school soda shop. It was great learning about the businesses, sometimes from the owners themselves, and sampling the food and drinks. What keeps this from being a 5-star review is that we didn't get as much food as we were expecting -- about half the stops were for beverages (beer, iced coffee, egg cream soda) and two stops were for cookies (which I do love, but would've preferred more variety). I believe this is a fairly new tour offering of theirs and if more food like pizza or something was served I think it'd be more successful -- and more worth the normal $55 / person price. I will definitely check out other tours of theirs and overall it was still a fun & memorable way to check out Brooklyn and meet cool people, too! read more

As a person who loves discovering the flavors of a place and unearthing the hidden histories of the streets and storefronts that I pass while on neighborhood strolls, Urban Oyster's tours are a dream come true. I have participated in two of their tours so far (the Midtown Food Cart walk and the Brewed in Brooklyn tour) and will be eagerly signing up for many more of their offerings in the future. Just thinking of the Tamarind sauce from Fatima's food cart on 43rd Street makes me hungry-- not to mention the thirst that arrives when I reflect upon the sudsy discoveries made at the Greenpoint Brewing Works. Urban Oyster provides the most researched, unique and 'real' City experiences of any other NYC tour that I've participated in (...and, believe me, there have been many). Their tour guides not only know their stuff backwards and forwards-- and come equipped with photographs and other documentation to bolster the tales they tell-- they evidently LOVE what they are doing. No other tour company that I know of continues to collect the oral histories of the people, companies and places that their tours introduce, in order to discover more for their next tour (..and to help keep these stories alive in the city's archives). It quickly becomes clear that the actors, teachers, bloggers and historians that lead these walks have real relationships with the people and places that they visit--- and continue to cultivate these special bonds. We did the "Neighbourhood East Brownstone Brooklyn" tour. Our tour guide was Joe. We had a small group (4) for our tour. We started at Stinky, a cheese shop, and then visited 7 other places. At Stinky we had beer and a sandwich, at another stop we also had a sandwich (Ted & Honey), at 2 just cookies (One Girl Cookies and Court Pastry Shop), at one Middle Eastern shop we had falafel (Damascus Bakery), at one a milkshake type drink (Brooklyn Farmacy and Soda Fountain), at another coffee (D'Amico Foods), and at 1 beer and bar snacks (61 Local). Every food tour I do is usually different from portion sizes, to history included, etc. The tour was a nice mix of everything I've ever experienced. We definitely heard lots of history, but some of it as we walked and some of it in places where we got to sit down. Some places we sat, some places we didn't. Some places we met the owner (D'Amico Foods), some places were so busy that we didn't (Damascus Bakery). Most places a manager or worker spoke to us about the company or its history or product (One Girl Cookies and Ted & Honey). By the end of the tour I had eaten enough to not need lunch. All in all a great experience. I tasted great food and I loved hearing all of Joe's knowledge. He delivered it in a passionate, knowledgeable and fun way and really catered well to everyone in our small group. I highly recommend this tour. The Urban Oyster bike tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard was fantastic. Our guide, Adam, was knowledgable about the yard, its history, and current usage. They offer a bus tour as well, however biking is the way to go, since you can see so much along the way. The tour concentrates on the green technology currently in use at the site and the shipbuilding history. 24 bucks - totally worth it. Be aware that since the site is an active industrial workplace and due to liability issues, babies and very young children are not allowed; according to our guide today, each person on the tour must be on his or her own bike. Young teenagers might enjoy the historic aspects of the tour. If you're planning on toting infants, the bus tour is your best bet. read more

A quick hour tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard on this past Sunday was the perfect way to enjoy the continued nice weather we are having. The tour was very informative even though it was only a "highlights" tour for the vast acreage that encompasses the Navy Yard, it certainly gives you an understanding of the Past, Present and Future of the space. We got to see a few things about the past and the present of the yard and a future space that will go under conversion. You can also to check out Building 92 (This part is free for everyone) which has a gallery on the 3rd floor, a cafe on the 4th and history of the Navy Yard on 1st and 2nd Floors. This is really cool because it details the history of the yard and showcases some of the current occupants and their crafts. Worth the Schlep out to Brooklyn for this true gem of a tour and historical culture of what the city had and has and will offer. read more

Urban Oyster is such a great company. I've done both the Brewed in Brooklyn tour as well as the Fermented NY-Craft Beer Crawl... so I love beer?! Don't judge me! David, our tour guide, was incredibly knowledgable about beer without being stuffy. The tour includes a stop at Brooklyn Brewery-always a great place visit! Dave led us through how beer is made... and then we sampled at least 8 different beers! Let the real fun begin! Along the way we went to a few fabulous craft beer bars, a craft beer store... and there was plenty to munch on along the way to soak up all that beer! I also love how Urban Oyster focuses on their community and supporting local business; it really adds to the "specialness" of the tour and the company. It almost doesn't seem right that one could sample so many different kinds of beer and have so much fun on a tour and leave feeling like one knows so much more about the history of beer, how to drink it, and how to support your local micro-brewery! I've done two tours with Urban Oyster, and I highly recommend them. The Brewed in Brooklyn tour is amazing. Dave and Cindy are super knowledgeable, and it's a lot of fun. You also cover quite a bit of ground and history - it's relatively diverse in terms of information regarding the history of brewing in Brooklyn (e.g., it includes a current brewery, information on distribution, prohibition-era information, etc.). More recently, I went on the midtown food cart tour with Cindy and a few of my friends. It was delicious, and it totally changed my perspective on food carts. It was a wonderful balance of learning about the food that we were eating, the vendors, and the policies and history of food carts in our wonderful city. Again, I found Cindy to be incredibly knowledgeable, and she welcomes questions. Something to highlight from the food cart tour - speaking with many of the vendors was incredibly interesting. Asking questions and conversing with them makes the tour even richer. I wish that we had started earlier on - it wasn't until the third or fourth cart where we started asking questions. Simply AWESOME - a great NYC experience!!!!! I just finished a program with Urban Oyster - NYC food cart tour. First of all, I rescheduled the date for the event three times with no issues from Urban Oyster. They always were very receptive to my changes (sometimes VERY last minute) and would send confirmations. The office was professional and courteous. Now onto the tour - Food was fabulous and the energy and enthusiasm of our tour guide, Brian, made the experience even better. When walking between carts - We were treated to history about the food carts as well as the daily maintenance and sanitation (very good information to know:) Brian was great and I highly recommend this tour for anyone looking for something "off the beaten path". Below are more details about the carts. Most of these are individually rated on Yelp for more information. (We did not receive full portions of the meals, so I do not feel right reviewing the carts individually - except Wafels & Dinges) The first cart that we visited was the Trini Paki Boys. The Chicken and Rice dish was outstanding - great flavor and just the right amount of spiciness. With the three choices of sauces, I did not chose the hot sauce (my friend told me that it was not overly hot, but flavorful); I had the Tamarind Sauce and Yogurt sauce. Brian introduced us to the owner, who has had the cart for 24 years and her son. The second cart we visited was El Rey el Sabor, where we had very good quesadillas. There was a choice between Spicy Pork, pumpkin flower and chapulan. Our group did not chose the pumpkin flour- most of us had the spicy pork; one brave sole had the chapulan (yes that is grasshopper). The quesadillas were spiced just right, even our adventurous participant enjoyed this dish. The third cart was Bapcha Cart where we had a medley of fabulous Korean dishes. One dish was galbi, a fruit juice marinated short rib. Yummy! I would definitely reorder any dish from there. In addition, in true Brian style - we met the brother and sister owner team, who were very nice. The fourth cart was the Biryani Cart, where the lamb over rice was spiced right and very tasty. (You see a trend????) The fifth and final savory cart was Kwik Meal - located right outside of Bobby Flay's restaurant, The Americain. This is an ironic location since the chef for the cart beat Bobby in a falafel competition on the food network! After tasting the most moist and flavorful falafels that I have ever had - I understand why. The tour ended with the sweet cart - Wafels & Dinges. We had the mini wafels with spekuloos spread. OMG - I believe that these genuine Belgian wafels (made from dough, not batter) were one of the best things that I have ever eaten. The spread made this dish even better. The staff was informative, giving us the history of the wafels and meaning of dinges. They were amusing and after eating the mini-wafel it took all my will power to not order six more. My friends and I had a great tour on Saturday. Josh got us into Brooklyn Brewery before the doors opened so we could snag one of the tables. He also had some great information on the different breweries that used to exist in the borough. He was super friendly and open to answer any question we had about the topic and the area. The other spots we went to were really cool and had plenty of space for our group. Josh also was kind enough to recommend a restaurant for dinner after the tour. If you're new to Brooklyn, or the city in general, the Urban Oyster Brownstone Food Tour is a good way to scope out some great places. Their guides are friendly, pleasant and extremely helpful. Ours even called several people before the tour began to check if they were running late and helped coordinate between a couple guests who needed to depart momentarily to put more money in their parking meter. The tour is a nice little sampling of some of the various aspects of New York; you have family businesses that value substance over flashy style and more modern efforts that aren't afraid to try and look fun while still offering delectable treats. It's a very fun time, but don't arrive ravenous. It's a fairly lengthy affair and while a few stops give a hearty portion, my wife and I left already discussing plans for dinner. The food is all good; we devoured everything on offer, but it's not going to be in the way of some of the various curated food crawls where by the end you feel ready to roll yourself home. One extremely positive note is that if you are still peckish afterwards, your map gets you a 20% discount at Stinky Brooklyn, which is a gourmet food shop featuring everything from pickles to bitters (and is also the first stop on the tour). read more

My boyfriend received a voucher for the Brooklyn Brewery tour for his birthday. We just moved from SF and are still getting to know the area. The tour started at Brooklyn Brewery and ended...right around the corner from our apartment which was a great surprise. Brian was our guide and he was great! Very knowledgeable and he also made an effort to interact with all 16 of us on the tour. We learned some very cool and interesting information about the history of breweries in Brooklyn, including the fact that our building stands on the site of an old brewery. I recommend this tour and we will be checking out some of the other tours Urban Oyster has to offer. My friends and I decided to do the Brooklyn Brew Tour based off Yelp recommendations. I found it pretty impressive that all four reviews gave it 5 stars. After trying it out for ourselves, I see why! Supports the local businesses. Also, an absurdly great value. Having lived just one block from the Brooklyn Navy yard for several years, I have always wanted to see inside. I found a fabulous blog online with pics of the old Naval Hospital and I was hooked! I was so thrilled when a friend emailed me a link about the Urban Oyster tour so I signed up right away. I LOVED this tour! Cindy was so informative, the binder chock full of info was great, bus was comfortable and the recorded conversations of people who worked at the Navy Yard WW2 era was amazing. The tour was nearly 3 hours long so boy do you get your money's worth. We even had a woman with us on the bus that worked in the Navy Yard during WW2...so cool:) The Brooklyn Navy Yard is so full of mystery and wonder and Urban Oyster does a great job exploring it. Thanks again Cindy! If you love history, especially NYC history...this is a great thing to do. I hope in the future the city can make the hospital and houses safe so you gan go inside...I'd pay just about anything for that! read more

I went on the Urban Oyster Brewed in Brooklyn tour this past weekend and I really enjoyed it! The tour opened my eyes to the amount of history that I've often overlooked in the area. It was surprising to me how many breweries there were and how most of them are long gone. I appreciate knowing what once was. I did the Beer/Chocolate tasting on 2/9 and it was UNBELIEVABLE! It was my first UO event and it did not let me down. Who knew that beer and choc would go so well together. The best combo was the serrano pepper chocolate (which has a great spicy kick in your mouth after the chocolate melts) and the troegenator that cut the spicy sensation. The next combo, we paired the serrano pepper choc again, but this time with 21st Amendment's Back in Black which enhanced the spicy kick in your mouth. When I got home, I signed up for another event for when my parents are in town next month- would recommend their events for locals and visitors. read more

We checked out the Fermented NY Craft Beer Crawl in Williamsburg and would definitely recommend it. Dave knows his stuff and the 3 hrs just fly by as you taste lots of great beers and walk between the various bars, beer store, and the famous Brooklyn Brewery. Highly recommended, particularly for those very interested in learning more about craft beer. My wife and I consider ourselves fairly skilled in the art [ :) ] and yet we had a great time. I hope we can find time to take some more Urban Oyster tours soon! read more

I just took my fourth tour with Urban Oyster - this time - NYC Brewery Tour! I've lived in New York for years so I don't need a tour guide to show me around, but with this tour you really get a chance to see and experience things in New York you wouldn't be able to on your own. We started at a brewpub in Manhattan then were transported in a small luxe bus to two breweries in Queens and then finished at a brewpub in Manhattan. You get to learn about beer and the emerging craft brewing industry in New York from the people who are brewing and a passionate, knowledgeable and local tour guide (Brian.) And the other tour participants were a really cool crowd It's great value including lunch at the beginning and beers at each stop. Great Tour! We took the Brooklyn Brew tour with Josh he was great! It was a gift for my boyfriends birthday and there were three others on the tour all celebrating birthdays. Josh was very knowledgeable, helped with selections on beers and with overall a great guide. The history on the brewery's was fantastic being a born and raised New York it was wonderful to learn the history our this city. It took about 4 hours which was great, just enough walking to burn off some of the beer and fantastic pizza from Dannys. AMAZING experience on the Immigrant Foodways tour in East Williamsburg this past Saturday. My roommates and I have lived only 10 blocks from the area for years, and we never knew about any of the treasures we saw in just a few hours with Urban Oyster. Unlike many food tours I've done in the past, this one was actually unique, culturally diverse and kept us full. Thanks also for introducing us to the Moore Street Market, a local gem where we plan to do all of our food shopping for now on. Our tour guide Princess is extremely knowledgeable, accommodating and kind - we learned a ton from her not only about the food we tasted, but about the history, geography and communities of our own neighborhood. Had a great time on the "Brewery and Beer-Tasting Tour in Brooklyn." Started at Brooklyn Brewery with a tour of the facilities and tastings of 8 beers. Then we hopped in a car to another place and that's where the walking tour started. Our tour guide Nick was excellent--very energetic, engaging, knowledgeable. My boyfriend's only critique was that he thought there would be more beer consumption (after the tasting at the Brooklyn Brewery, we only stopped at 2 more places for a drink), but I was fine with the amount of beer we drank. I really enjoyed the Neighborhood Eats Tour: Brownstone Brooklyn. Our guide, Joe was personable and knowledgeable about not only the Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens restaurants and the various foods for each stop we had on the tour, but he was also a wealth of information about the historic significance of the area, shops and buildings. He was very accommodating, personable, and had a lot of enthusiasm about beer. We saw the inter workings of the Brooklyn Brewery, learned how beer was made, and tasted quite a number of different types of beer. I went on the Midtown food cart tour and I thought it was a pretty good experience. It's definitely pricey (normal price $90 for 2 people, though we went for $45 through a deal website) and I probably would not recommend paying $90 to go on this tour. But for $45 it's definitely worth it. The tour guide was knowledgeable and told some very interesting stories about the food carts and their owners. The tour was 2 hours long and it just felt like it went by so quickly. My biggest complain (besides price) was that the portions they gave out per cart were too small for my liking. A small cup sized portion if each cart was good, but they advertise on their website that you'll be really full afterward. I'm not a big eater normally and I was definitely disappointed by the portion size. Overall, I'd recommend this if you're looking for something new to do. read more

Yesterday my boyfriend and I went on the fab Fermented NY Craft Beer Crawl with Joe as our Guide. We lucked out and it was just the three of us. My boyfriend loves things like the Discovery Channel and A&E because all the information and interesting facts they give you. This tour was right up his alley. Joe made the most delicious selections of beer and mind you this is coming from the beer drinking virgin-myself lol. He was so knowledgeable in everything that is beer. Yummy eats and a really good time. Growing up in NY you can easily take all that we have to offer for granted. It was nice to be like a tourist for a day. The experience was more like a good friend showing you a great time. I definitely recommend this tour :-) read more

Unlike everyone else on this page, I have not actually seen Hamilton on Broadway. But, like everyone else on this page, I had a great time on the Hamilton Walking Tour with Greg. Just the right amount of walking, tons of interesting historical tidbits, and a tour guide that can truly tie together the places you see / visit with both the songs from the musical and the importance in American History.
