Really nice, vibrant selection of modern quilting cottons, a fairly good canvas and linen selection; chambrays, shantung, polyester knits (if you're into that); sashiko threads, notions, patterns, books, quilting classes, machines. It's a smallish space, but well-curated. Some items were not priced; I asked one staff member the price; then another wanted to charge me nearly twice the amount at the register... This kind of dissimulation, intentional or not, is distasteful. Each item should be priced so this doesn't happen. It also saves staff being asked questions. read more

Signed up for sewing intro class to learn about the machine and we made pillows! Robyn was great and explained everything to us. She also made sure to check each person to make sure they're on pace. They have everything you need but you are welcome to bring your own machine to class so you can learn to work with it. They make you do threading three times so you can remember well. I love that bc I've taken sewing class before at other places where we did threading once and I didn't remember that's why I came to this one. It was fun and super cool we got to make something! read more

I visited Urban Spools while on a business trip. They had just that day moved to their new location. Yet despite the stress that normally goes with moving, the staff were inviting and great with the customers. Fun selection of quilting and other fabrics plus patterns for clothes that I haven't seen elsewhere. Highly recommend. read more

Had a class here. I specifically asked if the class pattern had expanded sizes. And I was told BEFORE SIGNING UP that they did. So go to the class. And the teacher tried but nope - the pattern was standard sizes. She sent me home and said they would call me. The manager called a few days later and used a voice distorter. I finally said I am having a really hard time understanding you and she dropped the distorter laughing. Not entirely sure what's so funny about lying to customers about a class but... I guess professionalism isn't their thing. Essentially I was told I was out of luck and could take the class and make the garment for someone else. I figured I just got a $50ish lesson in where not to take my business and skipped the make-up class. It's a small but cute shop. I took another class there and loved the teacher. But to not train your staff to check when asked questions and to not apologize and offer a refund when you are dead wrong about the information you give someone about your classes is inexcusable. And to behave in such an immature and unprofessional way when you have a customer who is irritated - seriously, who calls up a customer to handle an issue with a voice distorter? It was just such a weird and dumb thing to do. read more

Beware of their classes! I signed up for a class a few days before the scheduled date. On the day of the class I had an emergency and failed to attend it. The Education Director explained to me that "they are not responsible for emergencies" and I had lost my money because I failed to notify them 48 hours in advance. They have no provisions to reimburse, not reschedule the missed classes. As a customer, and during the pandemic when it's impossible to know the immediate future, it's unsettling that you don't have options unless you know you have to cancel with two days in advance. read more

Surprisingly, there really aren't that many sewing class options in the Dallas area, so I was very happy to find Urban Spools! I took the Intro to Sewing class (3 hours) and had the best time. Lovely people! We got to take home the pillow we made and I'm already looking to sign up for another class. You can bring your own tools but I chose to use their sewing machines, which was the Baby Lock Presto II .. AMAZING machine. I've officially been spoiled. read more

The. Fabric. Options. Are. Amazing! As a newbie to the sewing world, I began researching fabric shops in Dallas and stumbled upon Urban Spools. So grateful. They have the largest selection of Alexander Henry designed fabrics around. Whatever you may think about a standard small Quilting shop goes out the door when you see the reach of fabrics. Whether you like log cabins, makeup, loud prints, or a random solid color (mustard) you will find it here. On average the fabric costs about, $11+ per yard, with no discounts unless there is a special going on. Which may be standard for some, but pretty high for me. Great quality and the randomness of the fabric makes up for the cost. Also, I have only seen Cotton fabrics, never any knits. I have taken a sewing class as well. We learned how to sew a wristlet bag. Once again, the cost of the class ($60-80) was outside of my budget for classes, lasted 2 1/2 hours, and no one finished the bag. That being said, I walked away with tips on how to add snaps, piping, and how to finish the bag. read more

Awesome place! Stopped by on a Saturday evening for one of their sewing classes. I was greeted warmly by several staff members - all of whom were clearly experts at their craft and wonderful resources. I selected a fabric from their modern and well-priced selection (of mostly cottons). The class was more like a private lesson since I was the only attendee. I brought my basic sewing supplies as instructed, but turns out they had all of the basics to get me through my project (scissors, pins, etc.). The instructor was very welcoming and knowledgeable. I wasn't able to finish my top during class, but went home and did it on my own thanks to my new skills. I highly recommend this place. read more

What a great fabric shop! I'm new to the Dallas area and I've been looking for a great place to find fun and cute fabric. I'm so happy I found Urban Spools! I've been to a few other popular places in town and this is hand down my favorite. They have a wide variety of designers, like Michael Miller, Moda, Ella Blue, Windham, etc. They also have a good selection of solids from Kona, Moda, etc. There's a wide selection of pre-cuts (charm packs, layer cakes, and jelly rolls) that are great for quilts. Takes the guess work out of matching patterns! Prices are standard for this kind of quality fabric. Ashley, one of the associates, was very helpful and friendly. She greeted me and asked if I needed any assistance. She gave me my space while I shopped- something I prefer. Definitely a must-see if you're looking for great fabric! read more

Took my very first beginner sewing class here on yesterday and absolutely enjoyed it. The instructor was very young but super talented and knowledgeable as an instructor who will very quickly put you at ease. I walked in with butterflies but left with lots of confidence that I can conquer the more advanced sewing projects thanks to this one beginner class. Wasn't able to purchase any of the lovely fabric in their inventory but I'll be back, both for fabric and more advanced classes. I recommend them highly. read more

This place is awesome! I came in with my sister and even though the shop is small we probably spent 30 minutes just looking around. They have an excellent selection of Cotton and Steel fabrics and their fat quarter precuts are well organized by color and $3 each. We bought fun Christmas fabric to make stockings and sincerely enjoyed our time there. Definitely worth the visit! read more

I am new to the sewing world and have just started making a few simple tops, teaching myself from patterns and blogs I read online. I drove across town to this store after seeing all of the gorgeous fabrics on Instagram and their classes online. The woman who greeted me was very sweet and helped direct me to the fabric I was interested in. She then introduced me to the teacher who had just walked in the store. I happened to be wearing one of the first tops that I made myself, and while far from perfect I am still pretty proud of my progress so far. The teacher pretty much immediately started ripping into my top and telling me how wonky and hand sewn my neckline was (this has been the biggest learning curve for me). She then started telling me which fabrics I should be using instead of the one I chose. Without me asking for any tips or advice, honestly I was trying to end this abrasive encounter, she told me she couldn't give me with any tips to fix my wonky neckline since I wasn't in her class. I left the store, feeling embarrassed and insulted. Before this experience every store I have visited in the area had people working there who were encouraging and helpful. If you are new to the sewing community I recommend you go elsewhere. Edit: I reached out to the business via their website to let them know of this situation and was sent an email reply apologizing for the behavior, noting that a discussion would be had with the teacher. I was also sent a gift card to make up for the interaction, jury is still out if I will use it but I appreciate the company reaching out to try and rectify the situation. read more

This is my new home away from home! I am so fortunate to have found Urban Spools. I wanted to learn to quilt but figured I should learn to sew first. So in January I started classes at Urban Spools. By April I had completed my first quilt . I have taken lots of classes from Michelle Kitto and her fabulous team of instructors (Sarah, Lisa, and Shannon). The thing that sets this apart is the laid back atmosphere and the lounge setting is so inviting. I feel that I am always meeting new people at the classes and can't wait to see them at the next class, or Friday Night Stitch Night! read more

Beautiful store, I could have purchased every bit of fabric! I was in town on business and was collecting the row by row sets for my mom. I thought the store closed at 6, but when I called at 4:50, I learned the store actually closed at 5. It was my last store of the day, and didn't want to take another drive to Dallas (traffic is awful!). The lady I spoke with graciously offered to stay open till I arrived. I was thrilled!
