It is a single granite stone carved with "Flight 5481" ont he front and the names of the victims on the back. Air Midwest Flight 5481 was a Beechcraft 1900D operating CLT-GSP as US Airways Express. All on board - 19 passengers and 2 crew - were killed in the crash on January 8, 2003. The cause was a combination of overweight load (though within the FAA limits at the time) and an improper service of the elevator control cable. Investigators determined that neither problem alone would have caused the loss of control. This memorial is not far from the scene of the crash. We went with some friends to check out this event, Metalmorphosis @ Whitehall with CSO Roadshow (and food trucks). What a fun idea! Surprisingly, it wasn't packed when we first got there, but gradually all the seats filled up. First of all, the Metal head was working (which is dicey!)...Thank God! I did wonder why it couldn't spew water from its mouth. THAT would be so spectacular! Still, the head did spin around, and segment into different pieces too. So amazing! It made a great backdrop for the CSO roadshow, which featured many pop songs over the decade. Surprisingly good...even for cheesy numbers like "Living La Loca" and "YMCA"!! The funny thing is...this corporate park is located near the airport, so there were many, many planes that flew over during the concert. Luckily, we were still able to hear the orchestra pretty good. The food truck was a bit disappointing though. Only 3 vendors...and the vendor we chose (King of Fire) was so slow, I almost gave up! More on that on another review. The sculpture looked so out of place...too majestic for such a common corporate park. In any case, I took several pictures of the sculpture this time. Hope they feature many more events here in the future.

It was a bit of a drive to get here and the sculpture is located tucked away around some office buildings. The day we came it was empty and we had the whole grounds to ourselves except for security, lol. This sculpture is really cool and I liked how it rotated around. It was really awesome to see how someone's vision can come to life with determination.

Located in front of the Cleveland County Courthouse (now the Earl Scruggs Center) is this memorial…read moreto those who fought on the side of the Confederacy. As we all know, the Union ended up the victors of the war but the statue was still installed and remains in 2021. On top a granite base with engravings on multiple sides, "In honor of the Confederate Heroes of Cleveland County, 1861-1865. Lest we forget." and "Erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy, November 21, 1906" with a plaque below it, "Restored by the Cleveland Guards, Chapter #443 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, September 15, 1991." The statue is in excellent condition, depicting a moustached Confederate soldier in uniform, holding his rifle in ready position. Below him, "C.S.A." and a battle flag. The historical marker reads, "Founder of the nation's first textile factory owned and operated by…read moreblacks, 1897-1904. Mill building is 350 yds. N." It is by the side of the road with no easy parking. Of course, the more information can be found online. "The Coleman Manufacturing Company in Concord represented the first major cooperative effort by North Carolina's African American businessmen and was the first textile operation in the nation owned and operated by blacks. Considerable public attention went to the mill during its relatively short period of operation." "Equipment testing began in late 1898 and full production of cotton yarn a year later. The mill at its peak employed 300 black workers. At the 1900 Exposition Universal in Paris, France, the factory was billed as "the only Negro cotton mill in the U.S." Industry-wide economic troubles forced Coleman to resign in December 1903. Gregg Cherry, Governor of North Carolina, 1945-1949. State legislator. Promoted good roads and rural electrification. Grave is 3 miles S.E." Online, we find more information. "Robert Gregg Cherry, a veteran of World War I, led the state through the closing months of World War II and the years of readjustment to a postwar economy, a period of general prosperity." "As governor Cherry expanded mental health services by increasing hospital facilities and personnel. The state acquired Camp Butner, used by the military during the war, for construction of a mental hospital. During his term the state committed to creating a four-year medical school at Chapel Hill. The compulsory age for attendance in the public schools was raised from fourteen to sixteen. Governor Cherry successfully advocated increased teacher salaries and laid the groundwork for the road-building program initiated by his successor W. Kerr Scott." Whenever I go Uptown, I always park in the Hearst Tower. It's in a great location, close to all the…read morevenues. The parking is very convenient and leaving is fairly easy as well. Walking inside the building, I was surprised to see so many things housed in there: Modern Salon, Showmar's, convenience store, LaVecchia's, The Original Soup Man. If you are into architecture, the Hearst Tower is great to look at. It's one of my husband's favorite buildings Uptown and it always looks great in the Queen City skyline.
