I guess they feel that everybody wears plaid even in the women's department it was plaid. They do have some adorable Christmas decorations though you need to check it out.

Corporate…read moreheadquarters in Idaho (perhaps with its corporate owner in Florida who's trying to unload Albertson's/Safeway in a merger deal with Kroger) were given the go ahead. Out of the three Safeway/Albertson's stores in Port Orchard alone, this store is clearly meant to be the crown jewel. It looks like one of the other two stores is intentionally being starved to kill it off. That's my opinion from how it looks to me. 'm impressed. The corporate powers took a middling store with no identity and transformed it into an openly-inviting grocery store that's pretty well-stocked with many items--with some glaring omissions. More on that later. I've talked to a few employees and they're very happy with the new look and feel of the store. Things just seem easier and it's a better place to work. I can feel that vibe when shopping there. But the big problem with Albertson's/Safeway remains that all store orders are handled at the corporate level. Store managers have told me they can request certain items be sent to the store, but outside of that, regional management determines what items are shipped to each store. Some of my favorite products are omitted. One example is my beloved Philadelphia Salmon Smoked Salmon Cream Cheese Spread. Safeway/Alberton's carries a bunch of flavors EXCEPT for the smoked salmon. Why? I don't know. The Fred Meyer/Kroger store in town has plenty on its shelf. What about Alden's Organic Ice Cream (out of Oregon)? Safeway/Albertson's closed out the entire line. But again, Fred Meyer carries it. So, while SW is my preferred store, I have to shop at FM occasionally to buy the items that my favorite grocery store chain refuses to carry. Why? I don't know--ask them. Maybe it has something to do with cost control prior to closing the merger deal? Which the federal government may not allow to BE closed. If Kroger buys Albertson's, it will have a monopoly on the four supermarkets in town, leaving only Wal-Mart as the non-Kroger option--and I never shop at Wal-Mart. But the bottom line is that this Safeway has become a really nice store to shop in. Many of the employees are happy and friendly. There are still empty shelves in some areas which could be corporate-caused or supply-chain issues--who knows? To summarize, for my rating three stars goes to the store itself, the fourth star is for the cashiers and courtesy clerks who've made the checkout process actually fun.

There were more than enough parking stalls whenever we came down to shop. I loved the Valentines pampas they were selling but could not get myself to pack that home to Hawaii. I didn't run into any workers but it was fairly easy finding the ingredients I needed with my cousin who's local. We seemed to always be in a rush so I didn't have a thorough shopping experience. They have Starbucks tumblers available for purchase near the front. There are self checkout lanes that we utilized the most.

I was lucky enough to have Teanna work with me. She's also worked with my wife and she is superb. She knows her stuff and you can absolutely trust her suggestions and advice. She's a reason why we only buy our prescription eyeglasses at Costco. She helped me pick out two sets of frames and even did a 'tune-up' on the pair of glasses I'm wearing until the new ones arrive. Teanna reminded me that we can always bring our glasses in for tune-ups like replacing worn nose pads and readjusting the frames fit on the ears and nose. This is the type of added value Costco provides for all prescription eyeglass purchases.

But not just that we are fairly new to Costco and we kind of need to adjust accordingly to this kind of bulk shopping and zero in on things we need bulk of and not focus on this kind of a store like Fred Meyer is. Although I acknowledge larger families could probably use it as an equivalent. We were told the Gig Harbor location was less chaotic and while it was slightly less so it's still a very fast paced place. Nothing too much different than the one in our own town however they seemed to get people through the check outs at amazing speed. I'd definitely would return should a Costco need arise and we were in the Gig Harbor area. If you aren't used to the area however I'd recommend coming in and out with GPS as it can be very confusing with what feels like a large amount of stores clustered off of one road along with it's roundabouts.

Note: Ways maps gave horrible directions and so did Apple maps - they both send you to the parking lot of JC Penney's - so use Google maps to find the store which has an outside entrance in the Kitsap Mall, next door to Penney's and between them and Dick's.

Anyway this 5-star rating is for the butcher who not only was extremely friendly and helpful but gave me some info I'd never heard or read elsewhere. All we remember was that he was tall, had blondish-brown hair and wore glasses. I usually smoke my own beef jerky using sliced top round 'London Broil", and I smoke my own bacon from sliced pork belly. This wonderful butcher told me that he knows folks who not only make smoked beef jerky from brisket but make bacon from the point or the round. Ironically, he didn't own a smoker so he at times he confused the two parts of a beef brisket (and confused me as well). But it was all knowledge I didn't have before and it also gave me summer project to schedule. He also asked me to come back and tell him how the bacon turned out after it's done. Darn but I wish I'd have asked him his name. But the most important thing was that he handed me a gorgeous brisket flat at the weight I'd requested. Anyway, great customer service with added value always rates five stars with me. We may not shop that Safeway again for awhile but I will be going back to the meat department to find that butcher and give him a sample of my handiwork. And yes, I'll buy more meat from him. He's an example of what I've always maintained: make friends with a butcher in the meat department. You'll always get service above and beyond because in the end, it motivates you to buy more meat. I've amended this to also include making friends with a produce manager or clerk, and become really good chums with at least one cashier. Because I've made a point of the latter, checkout time is party time for my wife and I and our favorite cashiers. And that actually makes grocery shopping fun.

She looked me directly in the eye and ignored me. An older Hispanic woman who did not appear to be wearing a nametag. As she continued to ignore me, I witnessed her being rude to the customer currently checking out with her. Stood there for a moment thinking she didn't hear me so I asked again. Nope, she looked me in the eye again and ignored me once again. I was baffled. I'm not sure if she thought I worked there, and that's how she treats her co-workers asking her questions? Or is that how she simply treats customers??? I have my own coworkers like this, but none with the brazen gall to do it to customers. She wordlessly watched me turn and walk off upset. I found that item myself and went back to tell that customer where it was. She told me she might just start going to Fred Meyers instead because I actually helped her. A shame for all the other employees at that store that have to work with that woman. She seems like a miserable person to be around for customers and her coworkers alike.

I bought practical items such as washable and reusable placemats, tongs, utensil rest, and blank birthday cards. This store carries arts and crafts items, party supplies. This location also offers Essential brand for home organization supplies. I'm not fond of this brand because material for storage bins are thinner and will disintegrate quicker over time. I care more about quality vs quantity. I couldn't find good quality collapsible bowls and eye drops for dry eyes. Bowls sold are thin. Only type of eye drops available were generic brand similar to Visine. Keep in mind that you're paying for what you get. Cashiers are courteous and friendly.
