I just gave the post office one star too many. The other workers are normally moving stuff around in the background whenever I am next in line and there is no one working the counter. Then when a worker graces us with her presence, she's freaking rude and demonstrably crazy. Not a happy posting experience. One day I overheard the workers here talking about how one of the staff members will go missing for hours and they will find her asleep in her car nearby. Awesome. A total FAILURE on every level. ZERO STARS. As an undergrad with a PO box here, the lines to pick up your package were often ridiculously long. The employees were often rude and incredibly slow, no matter how simple your task. Congrats on getting a government job where all you have to do is waddle around and wait for retirement. I needed to verify that I rented a PO box here for a legal claim, so I called them up at least 10 times. Almost always, it rang for a while and no one answered. The one time I got through, the employee had no idea how to help me and left me on hold with no notice for 10 minutes, after which i hung up in disgust. If you were to throw your letters into the wind they'd have a better chance of being delivered than if you go to this post office. Neither should you expect that anything anyone sends you will arrive. To cover their tracks, it seems that they even sign for packages using fictitious names, as I've found out through the many unfortunate experiences I've had with this place. Today, I received a package that was delivered in January. It's May 4th. And I've visited my PO Box every week since the second week of January. A typical visit to this place includes long lines, screaming managers, rude employees, and the occasional polite employee who is suffering in a dysfunctional world they are powerless to change. Far and away the worst post office I have ever been to. Employees are the laziest humans I have ever encountered. They've lost my shipment before and took no responsibility so the money I spent on that order was wasted. They will not let you pick up for someone else even if you have written consent and the package notification is in your PO box (they sent an order back because of this). The employees are so rude and just stand there having personal conversations not working and get around to you when they feel like it. Does anyone manage this place? They should be fired along with everyone who works in the package receiving center, at the very least. Im embarrassed that this post office is in my town. The people who work there are never friendly. Never helpful. Never have anything you might need- like a sharpie or tape. Im six months pregnant and I went in the other day and they actually sent me HOME to tape a piece of BLANK paper to my package. They didn't offer me tape or paper! I was FLOORED. They make you feel stupid when asking a question.......I could go on. I buy my stamps anywhere else to avoid going there. What ever happened to friendly community spots?! Its such a shame. I am a retired postal service employee and the customer service has certainly gone down the crapper, they scan my item as delivered no delivery was attempted or made and it has happened on many occasions. I followed the carrier down the street the other day attempting to get my parcel which was supposedly out for delivery and after repeating myself many times with excuse me sir he finally acknowledged me and went back to the truck and gave me my parcel. Total lack of regard for customer service, and most of the items I order will fit in the mail box. Epic failures time and time again. read more

Minimal services as compared to other branches. Hours posted online are often incorrect. Lines for package pickup at peak hours can be quite lengthy; bring a good book! Most staff are helpful and pleasant. However, there are a couple of staff members that I've personally observed, on multiple occasions, behaving unreasonably hostile toward other customers. If you can afford a UPS box, would recommend going for it. Life is too short to wait in line for abuse. read more

This place BA LOWS!! I paid in full for a P.O. Box for six months almost two weeks ago. Everyday I went in to get my mail with no problem, until today. I go to check my mail and my key wouldn't work. Rather than stand in a line of about 50 people, I run home and get my spare box key and try that just in case it was my key. Still wont work. I call the phone number listed for the post office about a hundred times, no answer. Finally, I go wait in line for an hour. Guess what?They rented my box to someone else! NICE!!!! Double dippers!!!! No apology, no excuse, nothing. They actually made me feel like it was my fault! It's bad enough that this post office is the WORST ever with absolute morons working there and terrible service but now they double rent a P.O. Box?! They changed my lock for a Yale student! Nothing against Yale students (I'm a SOM alum) but I work at Yale and I get bumped for a student?! What a f#king joke this place is. Paid for priority 2-day shipping on a very important letter. It arrived 6 days later. Called to talk to someone when the tracking showed as "delayed" and the phone number just rang to a fax machine. National USPS number wouldn't connect me to a person. Lost a major life opportunity due to this mishap. read more

When sending something here - make sure you keep the tracking information. Photo of the item etc. Even then, it is quite possible that your recipient won't receive it. Packages are routinely misplaced. I rarely send my son a package since it is painful for him to wait in the lengthy lines only to be told that they cannot find his package. In 2 years I have sent him 8 packages and 2 were permanently lost and 4 were misplaced for weeks. The staff is extremely sullen and unhelpful. There are good post offices and some great helpful USPS workers in this country but this office exemplifies everything that is bad with the USPS. read more

I like the ladies that work here. Yes, they are a little gruff at first but I understand why...So I smile and be nice and they really do warm up. For those of us that have to make repeated trips to this place for packages and mail, make an effort to learn the names to the faces you see most often. It isn't that bad and they are happy when you remember their names. Be nice! I actually had a woman go and check for a package AFTER they closed at 5:35pm (on a FRIDAY) and I didn't even ask, she liked that I was nice to a coworker and offered to help me out. Don't add to the drama these ladies have to deal with every day. Remember that these people are working and even though you REALLY REALLY NEED TO HAVE that package/envelope, they are sorting through thousands of pieces of mail every day. One of the worst post office experiences I have ever had (and post offices aren't known for their amazing service anyway). It takes DAYS for them to process packages to pick up at a P.O. What is the point of paying for Amazon prime when my packages still take more than a week to get to me. My interactions with the employees range from unpleasant to downright offensive and an insult to common human decency. They have "misplaced" my packages and then yelled, actually yelled at me and suggested that it is my fault. Two packages that I sent from California and were supposedly "scan delivered" by this post office or its employees were never delivered. Unfortunately the USPS does not honor claims when they do not deliver packages. As I'm reading the reviews here claiming this location is notorious for undelivered packages, it is even more disappointing that the USPS declined all three of my claims stating that it is impossible that the packages I sent were not delivered. I will never use USPS to send packages again. read more

I sent an overnight package via Fed Ex which was scheduled for pick up at the latest at 6 pm the following day. It took the Yale Elm Street Post Office TWO AND A HALF DAYS after this time to "process" the package. Whereupon they lost it and only retrieved it after much searching on the third day after it was scheduled for arrival. read more

This post office supposedly closes at 5:30, but don't bother going after 5 if you want to pick up a package. On two occasions now, I have gone at 5:10 and found a package claim ticket in my box. The parcel call window is closed for seemingly no reason, so I go up to the front counter where there is no one being helped. I ask the employee if they'll go get my package (I see the racks of packages back there, it's all one big room) and they say something resembling "That isn't my job. Come back tomorrow." 20 minutes before closing, and there are no other customers, but they hold my packages hostage. On another occasion, USPS tracking told me that my friend's birthday present had arrived on a Saturday, so I immediately went and found no claim ticket in my box. I asked the employee at the parcel call window, and they said, "You'll have to come back next week," even after I showed the delivery notification. My friend's birthday was the following day, but his gift wasn't "processed" (located within the unorganized bins of packages strewn about) until two days later on Tuesday. I won't go into the details about how I once witnessed an employee yell at a customer for asking a simple question, call him a liar, and then continue to bad-mouth him to me. And the time my mom paid for next-day delivery on a package that they claimed hadn't arrived yet without even looking for it, but then miraculously found in an instant once I pulled out my tracking number, that was fun too.
