I had an extremely disorganized and unprofessional experience with Aftalion Law Firm…read more I first met with a legal assistant, Jorge, over Zoom on Thursday at 3:30 PM, who asked invasive personal questions and collected extensive personal data. I was told that I would be meeting directly with Attorney Aftalion on Friday. In exchange for that consultation, I was induced to leave a favorable Google review. On the day of the meeting, it was suddenly canceled without any notice. After I contacted the firm to find out what happened, I was told the meeting was back on. Instead of meeting with Attorney Aftalion, a different legal assistant joined the Zoom call and had me repeat the intake process from the beginning. I was then told the attorney was running late and asked to remain on Zoom. After waiting 45 minutes in silence, the legal assistant eventually indicated that the attorney was not going to show up and tried to negotiate, "I'm gonna make it up to you I promise. How about that?" When I asked when the meeting would actually be rescheduled, I received no answer. A few days later, I unexpectedly received a phone call demanding that I answer immediately. When I did not pick up right away, I received a message stating that the "complimentary consultation session" had already been offered. The entire experience was chaotic, poorly coordinated, deceitful, and unprofessional. My time was repeatedly disregarded, appointments were canceled and changed without notice, I was asked to repeat information multiple times, and no one seemed able to provide clear communication or accountability. I cannot recommend this firm based on my experience.

Ms Hernandez was not responsive to me & my family. She represented our mum in a conservatorship…read morecase in LA county. She was paid by the county, which seems like a conflict of interest to me. According to our mum, Ms Hernandez recently " tricked" her in telling the judge she (our mum) agreed to the conservatorship with LA county. She has never agree to this & is adamant she was confused with the court hearing. We are not sure what we can do at this point. Our mum had traveled to AZ and wanted to return back home to CA. According to our mum--it was her understanding from Hernandez that if she ( our mum) responded " yes" to all the questions asked by the judge- Our mum would be able to " go home to Long Beach." She was living with brother in LB. Keep in mind our mum also has some dementia. Now- our mum is very upset she is now under LA conservatorship. They control her, her estate & we do not have direct access to her medical information. It is frustrating. Our mum is 94 years old. I agree that our mum should be in a skilled nursing home but I do not agree with this conservatorship. The family were not notified of this hearing- a video hearing where our mum was probably confused & had no family present as none of her adult children were contacted by Hernandez. The court had a scheduled hearing in 2 weeks but it was later cancelled. The Guardianship supervisor described it as an " impromptu" hearing. I get the impression Ms Hernandez is just collecting a pay check. The county doesn't seem to care if she returns calls or ignores her client's Family members. Hernandez has an assistant , Jessica that returned calls but was not very helpful. I was always left hanging without all the information I needed about my mum's case. Hernandez failed to personally call back even though it was requested. Jessica also appears to do the bare minimum & was surly most of the time. There was one young lady in that office that was very helpful & had empathy- her name is Xiomara. I really appreciate her listening to me. Julie who answered calls was professional & polite at all times. i am not sure if Ms Hernandez is unethical but she is certainly unprofessional, uncaring and perfunctory. I have never seen an attorney - " abogada" -which means " Advocate" with such a flippant attitude. I spoke to her once two years ago & that's how Hernandez presented herself on the phone. I would not recommend this individual, Merlyn Hernandez to represent the elderly or vulnerable adults in the LA county system. Our mum has a significant hearing loss & had no operable hearing aids when the long distance video hearing was held. I doubt she could decipher everything that was said. This is a complicated case but overall, the experience we had with Hernandez was very unsavory. Hernandez failed to return calls to my brother as well. Its hard to believe she keeps her job with such low ratings & minimal effort. Our Elders et al deserve better. 09Sept26/SLC

Instead of feeling supported, I felt completely ignored during a very important situation involving children. Communication was extremely frustrating. I almost never spoke directly with the attorney and was constantly redirected to assistants who repeated the same generic responses without actually helping. It felt like nothing was being handled until the very end. When I finally had direct interaction, it was not a positive experience. I did not feel respected, heard, or taken seriously at any point. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend that people think very carefully before hiring this attorney. If you expect clear communication, professionalism, and consistent attention to your case, you may want to look elsewhere. Personally, I would never work with this office again, and I would not recommend it to anyone going through an important legal
