The USS Alabama Battleship Park was a fascinating and impressive spot to visit, especially if you're into military history. The battleship itself is massive and well-preserved, giving you a real sense of what life was like for sailors during World War II. Walking through the ship, you can explore different areas like the deck, engine room, and living quarters, which was a really cool experience. An amazing day at the Battleship Memorial Park. First time here and we had an incredible time self touring the ship and watching the history of the USS Alabama in the theater onboard. Parking was only $5. Admission was $15 for veterans and seniors, $18 for adults, $6 for children 6-11 and children up to 5 are free, as are active duty soldiers and dependents. Pictures are taken after you pay for admissions and there are quite a few military backgrounds you can choose from. If you choose to purchase the pictures, they're priced at $33 each or 3 for $66 with a magnetic stand frame for each 6x9 inch picture. There are picture packages of various sizes for purchase. There is a gift shop and the prices were relatively reasonable with an abundance of items to choose from. Adjacent to the gift shop is a restaurant in case you'd like to dine after making a day of the trip. We didn't visit the Drum aka the submarine because I don't like tight spaces lol but the history of the battleship was fascinating and viewing all of the decommissioned vessels/aircrafts really made me even more appreciative of the service of our military personnel. This is a place to you must visit. It's very informative, clean and well operated and I would recommend it to anyone. read more

It's really wonderful to learn about the history of this battleship and compare it to the size and scope of other battleships. This is a must go if you are anywhere near here. We drove 3.5 hours to go and it is totally worth it. To be able to walk around not only the battleship but a submarine is amazing and educational. Highly recommend taking kids parents etc. they also have planes and tanks. There are little bbq pavilions with bbq's so you can bring a lunch. There are 8 Battleship museums in the US, and this one has been on my bucket list since the 70s- and I finally made it here! This visit marks my 6th battleship, only 2 to go! What a great time I had! As my Uber approached her, her size almost indescribable, her silhouette unmistakable in the distance. She loomed larger and larger, we stopped and even though it was pouring rain, I stood there and beheld the incredible machine in front of me. Again, as with other ships, I walked the decks in awe and amazement of what happened on the ship over 80 years ago, the men that walked these decks, lived, fought, and died in service to our great country. Their sacrifices not forgotten, but thankfully live on through these museum ships dotted around the USA. Silent sentinels to those who sacrificed so much. They really did a great job with this museum, and they definitely take care of the ship. I wish I and more time, as there are so many other things to visit here- aircraft, a sub, you could easily spend 2 days here! 2 more ships and I will have visited all of them... But I will definitely come back here again! read more

Wow! What a fantastic experience and workout. So many reviews have been very positive. I'll touch on things that caught my attention: You can tour all 12 decks, but if you make the climb all the way to the bridge, know it's blocked off with plexiglass. I'm older and overweight, but I was able to navigate the stairs well and did take occasional breaks in the officers' mess, which had chairs, couches, water, and restrooms. I would recommend spending all day to see all the memorial park has to offer (USS Alabama, Drum, the hangar, and the outdoor park. They give you an armband so you can leave to get lunch and return, since the on-site restaurant has average ratings. It's A LOT of walking, climbing, and bending, and you will be sore the next day, but the soreness is well worth it to see the artifacts and history in this wonderful memorial park. read more

The USS Alabama is the most popular tourist destination in Alabama for a reason. It's amazing!! My grandpa was in the Army Air Corps in WWII. To see a sub and battleship from that time is just incredible!! My pop and favorite cousin were in the Navy and to walk through a sub and battleship in peace time (decommissioned, of course) was incredible! We planned 3 hours, got two and it wasn't enough. Such an awesome, family day, adventure! Especially if you have a history buff in the family. Online they do not inform you of paying for parking but it wasn't much and does support the unkept of the grounds and historical artifacts. There is a guided tour option and a self guided tour option. We had our kids with us, so we decided to guide ourselves and it was so fun. The kids learned some fun facts about our military history along with fun facts on how the vessels were used after being shored. I have visited quite a few museum ships over the years, and the USS Alabama was one I had genuinely looked forward to for a long time. I missed the chance to tour her back in 2023 and had been waiting ever since. Even though the primary purpose of this trip was business, I built in time specifically so I could finally make this visit happen. The Alabama has been on my list for years, and I arrived with genuine excitement. Before I even went aboard, there was a bit of insult to injury. You pay five dollars just to park and then pay eighteen dollars to visit the ship. The fee itself is not unreasonable, but the way it is structured feels inefficient and a little like a cash grab. Just charge one or two extra dollars on the admission instead of making it a separate transaction. The day before my visit, I wanted to drive through quickly for a look so I could get a sense of the layout before returning the next morning. I was told I would have to pay the five dollars for that privilege as well. Again, it simply felt unnecessary and added to the sense that the visitor experience was not the priority. I grew up studying naval history. I grew up in Annapolis, home of the United States Naval Academy, and I spent much of my childhood reading about these ships, the battles they fought, and the sailors and Marines who served on them. Because of that, when I visit a museum ship I am always interested in how things were used, how the ship functioned, and how each compartment contributed to the mission. The level of information offered aboard the Alabama felt very entry level. There were moments where I was looking for context or explanation and did not quite find it. The ship itself remains a majestic presence. There is something about standing next to a battleship that never loses its power. The USS Drum is a great addition to the visit and is well preserved, gritty, and engaging in its own right. Some museums place multiple vessels side by side and the Alabama and Drum together give the park a strong foundation. That said, the visit left me somewhat underwhelmed. One of the biggest challenges was the overall flow of the tour. There were several restoration projects underway, which is understandable, but the routing felt disorganized. Signs would indicate a detour, but it was not always clear where the detour was intended to go or where the tour path was supposed to begin or continue. I found myself wandering more than I was touring, doubling back, and sometimes wondering if I had gone the wrong way or missed an intended route entirely. Other museum ships I have toured do a much better job of preserving a coherent, guided sequence even when work is happening behind the scenes. Some compartments aboard the Alabama felt wide open without much explanation, while others were impressive and thoughtfully curated. I enjoyed the rooms dedicated to other ships, the Navy diving community, and the Marine detachment. Those areas had meaningful interpretation and gave a deeper sense of who served aboard these vessels. The aviation pavilion is an interesting space with an impressive collection of aircraft. It is visually striking, but there was less interpretive depth than I had hoped for. The exhibits would benefit from more storytelling to match the scale of what is on display. Overall, the visit was not bad. There is plenty to see and the Drum alone is worth the stop. But compared with other museum ships, especially those with stronger interpretive flow and more immersive and clearly guided interior experiences, the USS Alabama did not land as solidly for me as I had expected. Still worth visiting if you are already in the area, but expect more of a self-guided wander than a structured and deeply educational shipboard experience. read more

The outside area also has several memorials dedicated to military that lost their lives serving from Alabama. You also have the option to look at the air crafts flown from the military. I would recommend to explore as it is so much part of our US history. They are not dog friendly going into the ship or submarine which is understandable. One of my most memorable vacation experiences ever. It is truly awe-inspiring to climb aboard a piece of history. Do not pass up the opportunity to visit. They are open every day except Christmas Day. It's a well done military museum experience, made more impactful by the simple fact of standing in a genuine WWII battleship (USS Alabama) and submarine (USS Drum). There is a lot at the memorial: the museum building full of aircraft and artifacts, the battleship, and the submarine, plus a few more vehicles outside. You could easily spend half the day here. Plan for 3-5 hours depending on your level of interest. I am not a military history buff, but I do like history, which "comes alive" when you are standing on the spot where something happened. So if you are even a tiny bit intrigued, just go! Wear reasonable shoes and be prepared to climb up some stairs and ladders, BUT don't let that scare you off, either. Young and old, thick and thin were enjoying the experience with us. FYI, you have to climb stairs up to a grid platform to enter the submarine from the top, and our group member with a heights phobia couldn't handle it, but he did okay everywhere else. You will learn a lot, and you will be able to imagine what the war was like for the men who lived it. My visit fueled my curiosity and prompted me to find and read every page of //World War II At Sea// by Craig L. Symonds, which basically describes every naval engagement in WWII. The USS Alabama is not mentioned by name in the book, but having climbed all over the Alabama and Drum made the harrowing naval history all the more poignant. There is plenty of parking, even for buses and RVs, and parking is $5. If parking a large vehicle (RV, camper), parking is $30 BUT includes one adult ticket (normally $18), so it's not that much more. Don't expect to eat here; we availed ourselves of the vending machine for some water at the end of our visit. I was a little bummed that the gift shop closes early. read more

This was an absolutely amazing tour that every American should see. Being on board an actual battleship that saw combat is surreal. So much history. This entire park was worth every cent of the admission. We had free run of the entire ship, including a submarine and large fields of old tank and aircraft. The staff were extremely nice and the place is clean and well kept. We spent hours upon hours checking into every nook and crane of these ships and displays. It would take another day or so to really see it all in depth. The gift shop is fun and has lots of fun gifts and keepsakes. If you're ever in Mobile, don't miss this museum. Wow! What a great place to visit. There is so much to see and the prices can't be beat. My husband did the tour of the USS Alabama and loved it. Meanwhile, I looked after my dog in his little stroller as we walked around the park and looked at all the displays, This alone can take up quite a large amount of time. There were all sorts of aircraft to look at, as well as the USS Alabama and the USS Drum (from a distance). I took all sorts of great photos. The 9/11, Vietnam War and Korean War Memorials were very impressive! The gift shop was full of all sorts of quality merchandise and souvenirs. While we didn't eat at the adjoining restaurant, the aromas coming from it smelled wonderful! I highly urge anyone interesting in visiting this park to do it! read more

It's not every day that you get to tour a WWII era battleship and a submarine all in one day, but at Battleship Memorial Park you get that opportunity in one tour. It was really cool to explore the submarine and battleship and crawl through the interiors of each. It really gives you a better understanding of what our brave and courageous sailors went through during WWII while serving on the seas. It was impressive with how big the Alabama was, it is virtually a vertical city on the seas and then you get to the Drum and see how tiny everything was on that sub. You are basically surrounded by torpedoes! Just touring the ships alone takes a good 2 - 2.5 hours and that is if you don't read everything. There is also a variety of other war vehicles including planes, tanks, and other boats. So much to see and explore. My family had a great time and we were able to make almost a full day of this location. Lots of great history and stories to digest and a lot of great examples of war vehicles from the past 80 years of American conflicts that bring history alive. I see this as a great opportunity for my kids to have fun but to also learn that the freedom that we enjoy and take for granted on numerous occasions was not free. More people need to be reminded of that truth. Hats off to this organization for striving to provide a place where that can happen. This was a unique experience. There's a lot to do on site. You can go inside of the battle ship or the submarine they have on site. There are dozens of aircraft and tanks on site. The Sherman tank from WW2 had damage on the back of it from what looks like 50 cal rounds. That was pretty neat. The kids loved it. The employees are all very helpful. read more

Museums do not get more interactive than this. A little boy's dream! You can walk through the sub and battleship and touch EVERYTHING. Hit any button you want! Turn that knob, sit in that chair, hop up on that bunk bed, climb that ladder. Between the interactivity and all the photos displayed throughout, kids can see what life was like on the ship. What a great opportunity to learn history, have fun, and possibly spark an interest in future military service. We'd previously been to the USS Midway, which my kids loved, and I think the USS Alabama Memorial Park was on par with that. TIP: We went in the middle of the week, but it was still quite crowded. Then as we were leaving multiple buses with school groups/camps showed up. My advice is to get there when it opens and see the submarine first. If you're pressed for time, take the red and green tours on the battleship first, then finish up with the yellow. The yellow is by far the longest and a little redundant, so if you have to cut a tour short, yellow would be the best one to skip out early on. Plan on 3 hours if you have squirrely kids, and 5+ hours if you're an adult group who wants to see and read everything. read more

Drove almost 8 hours from Dallas Texas while we were on our family trip in there, my dad said last time he visited the "Mighty A" was around 16 years old in 1984. Actually I passed by twice and finally had a chance to see the splendid boat. This museum divide into 3 parts: The preserved weaponry area, USS drum submarine area and the battleship. Our self guided tour began from the visitor center, where the old fashioned military aircrafts were presented. They also had flight simulator on the corner and it was fun to feel the realistic fighter control system. One of my favorite was B-24 Liberator, same aircraft design as B-25 Mitchell which took the lead to bomb Tokyo in the Doolittle Raid. The submarine was in my opinion, gave the most detailed armament in all submarines. Its super cool going underneath the firing position of the torpedo tubes. Battleship definitely gives an A+, it will take 1.5-2 hours only by going through the main walkable area. If you tour specifically, it might take even longer from 8am till closing time. As a foreigner, I am still proud seeing how mighty American industrial power really are. By the way, you can go inside the 4500 ton main battery turret to see the loading mechanism. Its a unique feature compare to USS Iowa where some of that is forbidden to tourists. Again, I'm glad to have an opportunity to visit one of the patriotic project of the United States. Whoever operate this museum deserve a formal salute, because a lot of veterans weren't alive nowadays, finding a storyteller is very rare. Little tip: Most major connection between staircase can be very steep, so don't bring a stroller if you have underaged children. Be careful while you climb. read more

This memorial park is one that I have visited several times in my life. There were 4 South Dakota class battleships built during the war and two are still with us to visit, Massachusetts and Alabama. The "Mighty A" as the Alabama was known is the centerpiece of this park which also includes the USS Drum submarine from WW II along with several aircraft housed inside the aircraft pavilion and outside. Last week, I visited on a rainy weekday. The aircraft pavilion has a few aircraft (propeller, jet and helicopter) inside and more sitting outside. The largest aircraft inside is a B-25 Mitchell from WW II. The displays here are fairly routine and plan on spending 30 minutes looking at the aircraft and reading the various storyboards. The USS Drum was added here in the 1970's and is located on land and involves a walkthrough from bow to stern typical of other subs that are on display around the country. These submarines are very interesting to tour because they are so small and you get to see so much of the boat. It's really amazing how small of a space 75 people lived and worked in. The Drum is a fine representation with both forward and aft torpedo rooms open along with other spaces such as the officers and crews mess and berthing areas (including the Captains cabin which is the size of an average closet), conning tower, bridge, engine and electrical spaces, etc. One tip....go slow as you walk through it especially going through hatches going from one compartment to another. There are MANY opportunities to bump your head into something metal including exposed screws. Budget 20 minutes for the Drum. Finally the Alabama (BB 60). What a beautiful ship from the outside. Especially in this setting on the edge of Mobile Bay. The Mighty A has 3 tour routes on board, Red, Green and Yellow. The first two are mostly below the Main Deck while the Yellow is mainly above including the Superstructure. Each tour takes about 30 minutes so budget about 1 1/2 hours for the whole ship. The only way to cut down on that time is to not do all 3 tours or walk quickly through each one. Also you will be going through multiple deck levels and therefore ascending and descending on ladders which are fairly easy. I found the tours to be interesting and enjoyable however I was disappointed with the last 7 or 8 stops of the Yellow tour. For some reason not explained on the map these stations were closed. They were climbing up in the superstructure going towards the bridge, etc. Therefore you could only go up to the battle bridge which is encased in armor. I believe that this park is worth a visit and that the Mighty A and Drum are worth visiting. BB 60 is not the best WW II warship museum in the US but it is one of the better ones. read more

Review number 888. Had to save up until I had something for this milestone! THIS is something special. The USS Alabama was one of the last battleships commissioned for WWII. This is not a place to go if not up for a bit of a physical adventure. While there is a wheel chair route, one really does not understand the power of this museum until you crawl, climb, squeeze and get a wee bit claustrophobic seeing all you can see and read. This ship was a fast floating island fortress that projected a powerful United States of America. You need to go down into the engine room, crawl up into a 16" gun turret, then down to the powder room for that massive gun, through the hanging bunks, through sick bay, wander through the massive enlisted galley, up through the mast to the bridge and upper captains quarters to really picture what life was like for around 2500 sailors and Marines at sea. There is also a submarine to crawl through and a few significantly import aircraft on display. Go see the A-12. The B-52 is another must see. Plenty of others to look over. Our freedom and way of life was protected by the equipment on display. Don't forget people lost their lives using these items to protect us. I was sore for days and it was absolutely worth it seeing the items on display at this memorial park. read more

There is so much to see and read about so give yourself plenty of time! It took my husband and I about 3 hours. One of the coolest museums I've ever been to! Visited the battleship while on vacation at the beach. We got there as soon as they opened so we beat the crowd. Viewed the submarine first then the battleship. The battleship is cooled but some areas obviously are a little warmer. Lots of stairs and climbing to view all three sections (red,yellow,green) although some areas would be suitable for someone who has trouble climbing. Wasn't too expensive and the kids and big kid (husband) loved it! Would definitely revisit. read more

The battleship is HUGE and you get to explore the entire thing. There are informational signs and displays and maps throughout so you know where to go. By far the nicest and largest of the four similar museums I've visited (comparing to NYC, NJ and NH). When you pull in to the park there are quite a few planes, helicopters and jets to check out after you park. After just seeing the new Top Gun movie it was especially cool seeing the fighter jets in real life. There is also a kennel in a shaded area where you can safely leave your dogs while you explore. I have no idea what the cost is since we didn't have a dog with us. There is a small fee to park and if you're not interested in touring the battleship or submarine you can just walk around this area with no other fees. If you're looking to go inside you walk into the hangar where there are more planes on display. This is where you purchase your tickets. There are also restrooms in this building. There is also a virtual plane ride in here (extra cost). You will not be able to walk around in here without purchasing tickets first. After you're done here you can head to the battleship or submarine. Since it was an extremely hot day during our visit the woman selling us our tickets suggested visiting the battleship first since it was not air conditioned. We grabbed a self guide booklet and took her suggestion. There are three color coded and numbered self guide tours on the battleship. We did the green and yellow tours and this easily took us over an hour. The tours are very easy to follow by following the colored numbers through the ship. Considering it was 95° that morning and there was no ac the ship was not unbearably hot. Several areas were cooler than others and had fans running. Besides the deck (which has great views of Mobile Bay), the lowest level of the ship seemed to be the hottest. We decided to end our tour here and skip the red tour. We also decided to skip the inside of the submarine since the heat outside was catching up with all of us. There is a small gift shop and additional bathrooms in a separate building leading back to the parking lot. If you're into military museums this is definitely the nicest I've been to as far as the size of their collection goes. The staff is friendly and will gladly help with any questions. If you're going in warmer months go early. There is zero shade anywhere (besides the dog kennel area). The hangar is air conditioned but far from cold, the battleship is somewhat cool and the submarine is air conditioned. You can easily spend hours here exploring. The self guide booklet could be a bit more descriptive or maybe some better signage because some things I just couldn't explain to my kids when they asked. read more

There were three parts to this memorial park: USS Alabama Battleship, World War I Exhibit, USS Drum and lots of Park Memorials to visit: * Alabama Korean War Memorial * Vietnam Memorial * Fallen Guardian Memorial - honoring those whose lives were lost in service to the U. S. Coast Guard * Service Dog War Memorial - monument honoring the dogs who served our country * Fallen Hero 9/11 Memorial - tribute to Alabamians who have given their lives in service since 9/11 Sorry to bombard your feed with all my photos but I have a special place in my heart for our military. I have family members who served and are veterans and also currently on active duty. We did a self-guided tour of the battleship and the submarine. The WW1 exhibits included a Ford Model T and artifacts from the 42nd Infantry Division, famously known as the "Rainbow Division." General Admission is $15 (seniors 55+ is $13). So worth it. The memorial park is dedicated to those who served in all branches of the US Armed Forces and there were artifacts from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard. We saw tanks, boats, planes, memorials, and artillery throughout the scenic surroundings. Great experience in our tour of the southern states. Review #1704 read more

If you're into all things WWII Navy this is the place for you! Not only a Battleship but a submarine too that can be toured, and lot of airplanes and tanks you can right up to. A nice indoor facility too. I thought it was reasonably priced and offered a lot to see. Be warned, lots of walking around to be done. Great site, and plenty of parking. Reasonably solid gift shop too. Lots of great photo opportunities. read more
