I went with my son on a school field trip. We had the best time. I thought however, some of the classroom style projects were a little hurried and would like to see more age appropriate demonstrations for the age. The person who took the students through the floors was phenomenal in this, however. I look forward to a future visit. read more

The museum is worth a visit for the European Classical Art in the first floor. They have beautiful works of art by William Adolphe Bouguereau and Sir Albert Levy. In the European fine arts section, there is a painting by unknown that I recognize. I would just have to scour for hours through my art blog to find the artist that it resembles the most. For now, it reminds me of Ernest Eugene Appert (Scene from the Youth of Nero) and or Ernest-Aguste Gendron (Les Ondines.) I've seen millions of paintings from all over the world but I know that painting is very familiar and similar to one I've seen before. read more

Great for Kids and just about anyone. Tip: Start at The Kids Exhibit on the 2nd floor, it puts you in a euphoric, semi-hypnotic state. It puts you in the right mood to look at art for hours. Thursdays are free for Mobile County Residents, just present your ID for proof of residency. read more

*We went here pre COVID-19, I just forgot to review* This museum is definitely worth checking out. I was enthralled with the various show rooms of art and all the unique pieces. There was something for everyone! The lower level had some feminist works which were super cool and I had a great time dragging the boyfriend through it, ha! I loved all the Tiffany & Co boxes! At the end, I of course had to stop by the gift shop. Knickknack collector... ‍ I purchased a handmade ornament in the shape of Alabama (and this was no time near Christmas) by a local artisan. It was very affordable for $9 and the beverages were also shockingly cheap. I would go again and recommend it to anyone who wants something low key to do. We were at the museum for about 2 hours in total. Great rainy day activity! read more

The MMoA is a hidden gem and well worth a visit. I'd recommend at least two hours to enjoy it. First, explore grounds. There is a beautiful lake and a bridge which is perfect for a nice stroll when the weather is favorable. It's quiet and there is plenty of free parking. Second, take your time touring the gallery. The featured exhibit until May 3rd is The Art & Design of Mardi Gras. It is breathtaking! The costumes from HBO's Treme provided a real history lesson for me. I discovered the rich heritage of the Mardi Gras Indians in New Orleans. The MMoA has fourteen exquisitely crafted Indian suits from the series. They were fashioned after the actual Chief's attire. His boots were made from fox pelts imported from Antartica and his crown was fifteen feet wide! The displayed suits are so close that you can touch them (but don't try to). They're crafted in bright, wild colors and feature beads, stones and feathers. Third, there's a Mardi Gras exhibit in a separate wing of the museum. It features elaborate costumes and jewels, some from the 1800's. I saw capes and gowns with fifteen foot long trains! Finally, check out the MMoA's permanent collection. There are impressive statues from Mali and paintings and pieces from Asia and Europe. I had no idea so much depth, culture and history could be found in Mobile, Alabama. There are also mixed media pieces and video footage for you history buffs. Tickets costs $10. There are student discounts available for $6 and the museum is free on Thursdays. Come out and enjoy it! read more

The Mobile Museum of Art has an awesome summer camp for children. It's very educational, fun, and the instructors are great! My son has been for several years and loves it. The museum itself is also free for Mobile residents on Thursdays, so check it out if you've never been. It's very cool! read more

We finally made our way to the MMOA for a tour yesterday. I've been to the holiday night market twice to set up a gift wrapping booth, but just haven't toured it yet. The holiday night market is something they do every month, and it's totally awesome! They have a lot of local artists selling everything from art to jewelry, to other unique pieces. They also sell a little of this in their gift shop. When we visited the museum, some of the exhibits were closed and that meant our admission was half price. Admission is not expensive at all. It's $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for active military and students, and children under 6 get in free. Like I mentioned, we only paid half of that amount. The museum doesn't have any historic pieces from BC or even early AD. I believe the oldest things we saw were sketches from the 1800s. The displays ranged from photographs and sketches, to sculptures, to quilts. My favorite was probably the chair that was reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast. They also had a display of carved wood bowls, and I loved those because wood bowls are my current obsession. The glass room was also intriguing and the view of the pond from that room was lovely as well. This museum was well worth a visit. I would recommend everyone in Mobile see it, and seriously, that night market is a great place to buy locally made gifts. read more

I love the MMOA. I have been here several times over the years. The museum is located in a beautiful park and has art on the inside and the outside of the building. They have great permanent and traveling exhibits, plenty of places to sit if you need to rest for a while, elevators, several (very clean) bathrooms, water fountains, and a big activity area for children. Visiting the museum makes for a fantastic date, and we were informed last time we were there that they now have free admission every Thursday and are open until 9PM on those nights. Their many windows provide a beautiful view of the park just outside and make for a great experience over all. I look forward to seeing many more exhibits here. read more

I asked the driver to take a scenic route to the Art Museum and ended up so glad that I did! What a lovely history lesson in architecture and diversity he presented to me! Not knowing what to expect with the museum I was expecting to stay only an hour or so. The driver indicated he would be happy to pick me up when I was ready! I spent my entire day delightfully exploring every nook and cranny of each gallery! While there was a thin showing of what I consider to be Museum Standard Artists this museum turned my head in directions unexpected and refreshing! As much of my volunteering through the years has been divided between educational settings and the arts I was thrilled to be welcomed into the classrooms! What wonderful facilities these were for this community! Staff /artists guided learning experiences in 3 Japanese art forms. Being invited to create took my experience to an even more Delightful level! My clay piece was forgotten under the lobby desk! But I took the kindness and joyful experience with me! The setting for this museum begs for a leisurely picnic to break up the day! If there was a cafe I missed it yet Visiting its gift shoppe cost more than I'd intended but I simply had to have Buddha Boards ! My glucose levels were ebbing by the time I completed my visit! I look forward to returning in the future! Recommending others take time for this art filled gem is easily done! read more

What a nice little art museum! While visiting family in Mississippi, we took a day trip to Mobile and found ourselves at the Mobile Museum of Art. The museum is located in the middle of lovely park, just a short drive from downtown. The "senior" rates here start at age 50. When we visited, my husband was about two weeks away from hitting that milestone, and, when I teased him about "missing it by that much," the friendly front desk person charged us both the senior rate. (My first time ever being given the senior rate. :--) We spent the next couple of hours wandering the museum's many galleries -- enjoying everything from contemporary American paintings to photography to some wonderfully-crafted wood furniture. After we left the museum, we spent a bit more time just enjoying Langan Park on a not-too-hot summer day. Given that we live nearly 3,000 miles away, I can't say we are likely to return the Mobile Museum of Art any time soon. I can say, we take with us from our time there, happy memories of fabulous art, a picturesque setting, and Southern hospitality. read more

The museum is located on a very peaceful and scenic site. It is away from all the hustle and bustle. The museum itself seems new and well maintained. It has different areas offering different exhibitions in different medium. The staff is very friendly and helpful. At the time of my visit, it has some Native American art, Asian art, a visual art through video and audio, an art with reflection effect and other traditional art. My hubby and I happened to drive by a sign for the art museum and decided to go check it out. Wow! What an oasis in Mobile! The drive up to the museum is gorgeous and passes by the Botanical Gardens (we will go back for that since we didn't have time). The museum itself is very appealing and serene. It has a lovely view and the architecture of the building is unique. The cost to get in was about normal ($8 for military, $10 for regular adults). I thought the exhibits were quite impressive for a town that (to me) doesn't seem to be cultural hotbed. The permanent exhibits had some amazing glass work, pottery, wood, and paintings. There were nice descriptions of the artist next to some of the pieces. There was more fine artwork on the Smiths Craft Gallery. Some AMAZING art. Some of the woodworking was breathtaking and I found all of it to be fascinating (even some of the modern stuff that I am not really into). We saw the Jun Kaneko exhibit. I love Asian art and throw pottery for a hobby, but this exhibit didn't wow me. I can certainly appreciate the art form, but I think the Goya exhibit will be better (but that is just my opinion!! art is so subjective). The other galleries were very impressive. The variety was nice and it showcased a lot of different artistic talents. You can definitely find something in this museum that speaks to you! This museum obviously gets a LOT of students with a special entrance for groups. I would hate to be at the museum with a bunch of school kids. Luckily, we were the only 2 people in the museum on a Monday afternoon... We were watched very closely by all of the museum people. We also got asked if we were on assignment (perhaps because we were commenting about the art?)- which I thought was hilarious since we are definitely not anywhere near college-aged. Then I thought it was really sad that perhaps the only people who visit the museum are kids who are required to go for class! I just really enjoy art and love seeing what unique items can be found in museums. Of course the gift shop was closed for inventory. Whaddevah. So we didn't buy anything. I will keep my eye open for the new exhibits. Some neat jewelry exhibits start Oct 2, so of course, they weren't available for us to view either. I would go again (making sure lots of exhibits are available for viewing) and then head over to the Botanical Garden and make a day of it. There was a nice looking cafe in the museum, too. read more

The museum is on a pleasant grounds suitable for a quick walk before or after you tour the museum. Admission prices are in line with similar museums I have been to before. The permanent collection is a bit of a hodgepodge of European paintings and decorative objects, but the exhibitions of abstract glass and wood pieces are expansive and impressive and are a good reason to visit. There are also several modern art pieces that are interesting. The museum gift shop did not have a book cataloging either the exhibitions or the permanent collection, which was a real disappointment. The gift shop is rather small, and contains no posters and very few print reproductions of pieces you see in the galleries. The Mobile Museum of Art has lots of potential. Hopefully in the coming years it will grow and expand and become a serious destination for art lovers. In the meantime, it needs locals to take an interest and spur them to improve. read more

Enjoyed the various art they have at this musuem. The place is large and spacious. There is plenty of parking and it's located near a golf course and park. The views from the museum are lovely. The staff seemed friendly. When you arrive you proceed to the gift shop to buy your admission. Once you do they'll give you a brief description of the exhibits and invite you to tour the musuem. If like me you enjoy view the art and reading the signs it might be best to either go alone or take someone who is also into museums in general. My 12 yr old didn't have the same appreciation but I'm glad I've exposed him to it at least. The restrooms are mainly gendered but there is at least one family restroom in the building which is open to everyone. read more

A rainy day changed my plans during my stay in Mobile. I'm glad because I really enjoyed going to the museum. It's big enough to have different types of exhibits but not so big that it takes up your entire day (or makes your eyes hurt). I especially enjoyed the collections of naval-themed paintings and decorative pieces in wood, glass, and other materials. They had a few contemporary pieces that were a little bizarre but you don't have to be an art fanatic to enjoy most of their pieces. Cute little store too! Would definitely go back! read more

This is a very good regional museum. My brother-in-law and I visited this museum this morning, and we were the only guests. Thursdays are free admission and the museum is open until 09:00 P.M. Otherwise, the hours are 10:00 A.M. until 05:00 P.M. and the admission is $10.00 per adult. Allow at least 1 1/2 - 2 hours. If you are pressed for time, focus on the CHRISTENBERRY photography exhibit (of rural Alabama) and the Asian art exhibit; both of which are located on the first floor. The Nature in 19th European Art (also on the first floor) was nice, but nothing outstanding. The Museum is connected to the Mobile Municipal Park and you can feed the ducks from the adjoining walkway. read more
