It is a damn shame that this place is not funded better, The two stars are only here because of the caring and dedicated employees. This is southwest Texas and it gets HOT! The shelter is so overcrowded that many dogs are kept outdoors on chains and no shade is provided. While they all had water, this is not acceptable. I work fairly close to the shelter and have a customer that works there. I inquired if they had any adult housebroken German Shepherds available. She said "Not at this time". A week later I got a call that such a dog had arrived. I went to see the dog and she must have had 200 large ticks on her and was flea infested. In fact, all of the dogs outside had serious flea and tick problems. The budget is such that the animals get food and water, no other care seems to be provided. I declined adopting this sweet pooch as I could see the potential health issues she may develop. Not a week goes by without a stray walking into the shop where I work with a chewed off leash. I have to wonder if they escaped from the shelter. Can anyone in Uvalde do just one damn thing right? read more

This is a good facility. They take care of their animals and really care about them. It is over-crowded but that is not their fault, they are a no kill shelter and don't turn away homeless animals. I disagree with the previous review. It is overcrowded because not enough get to go to permanent homes. It is hard to control the flea and tick issues and the dog they saw probably came in that way. They have had to cut back on the flea/tick treatments cause the animals were getting ill from the constant chemicals. I wish they had a staff with more knowledge but the MAJORITY of their money goes to caring for the animals like vet care. Don't like it, help out, I sometimes volunteer there just to lend my small animal expertise. People make the difference! read more

Mark my husband and I volunteered there years ago on a day to day basis and we made things better however we were only allowed to do what we were told we were instructed by the manager to feed the dogs 1 scoop of feed per kennel the place should have been shut down long before this I am glad of its closure and hope it never opens its doors again. We did try to make a difference but when faced with opposition what can you do. Daily because the dogs weren't being fed enough my husband would haul out 2-5 dead dogs some died from being eaten by the other dogs THAT is cruelty! read more

I read the other review, and I am not so sure that these are kind,caring people that work here. I went to get a kitten here, and upon arriving(I called first) I had to wait outside for a while before some young girl came out to help me. She guided me inside to the cat section of the shelter. Right away the strong smell of animal feces and urine attacked my senses. These animals are just shoved in small cages with a dirty litter boxes. The girl took me to the room that had a choice of two kittens. I was friendly to her and tried to ask questions about the animals and i was pleasant. She, however, was quiet, seemed indifferent and definately was not knowledgeable about the animals at all. I chose the female calico, as she was a female, and very pretty. So then they take me to the, GAG, "office". The lady that runs the shelter has about ten dogs that are hers.....they are allowed to have free run of the "office". There was dog feces EVERYWHERE!!!! Dogprinted feces on the floor, desk, papers, ewww..ewwww!!!!!! I gagged and really didn't know what to say.....they charged me the $30 adoption fee and I signed a paper saying that I would take her to the local vet to get spayed. My new kitten was cute, but was covered with flees, dirty, and smelled like feces. She was very loving and I took her home. I noticed though, that she had a runny nose. I wiped it and then proceeded to give her a bath, as she smelled awful!! I dried her right away and took her to my living room where she purred and went to sleep. She did really good on her first and second day, but on the third she stopped eating and was becoming inactive. So I called my vet and made her an appointment for monday(as this was sat). Well, sadly, she didn't make it until monday and passed away late Saturday night!!!! The living conditions at this place are horrible. Why cant we have an ASPCA in Uvalde instead of this pathetic place?? Also, myabe by now they have replaced the lady in the office, as that is just plain disgusting and unnecessary! read more
