Well I stopped by this winery in my way to San Antonio and was pleasantly surprised. I looked at three things including ambiance, service and most importantly quality of wine. Ambiance - super small winery but in point, quiet, peaceful, a olace to relax in a crazy town. Actually perfect for both indoor and outdoors. Had cheese and crackers and meats from local Texan farms. Was perfect for tasting. Service - girl at front was fantastic host and took care of us for The history to the wine pouring. Wine - very good, especially the Cab and the Muscat - so a red and a white both. She let us try the port, surprisingly tasty. Overall, loved this little winery. Operating continuously since 1883, this winery is a small gem that offers tastings and a lovely outdoor area that caters to everyone, including families. We stopped by while in Del Rio and partook of the tastings and had a great time. Our hostess was gracious and knowledgeable, and we were joined by a wonderful couple who also just heard about the place and stopped by. It's in the middle of a neighborhood, so parking is limited but steadily available. There are a small number of seats inside and more seating outside. They offer a limited menu including a few charcuterie boards, which were all gone when we arrived, so we bought some fancy crackers. We drove three hours one way to go to this winery. It was well worth the drive. We tried two flights of four wines, so eight total. All the wines were great. It was a weekday so the charcuterie boards were not available but they had some meat and cheese on site. Came how with a case of wine. Here is my standard disclaimer: I am not a wine dude by ANY means, and apparently, I'm not a cheese aficionado either (scroll down if you want an explanation). This is a good place to go and get a glass of wine, purchase a bottle, or even do a wine tasting. I did the wine tasting, so my review is for that experience. Your best bet if you are doing a wine tasting is to stay in the front area near the register counter, if they are busy, they probably won't be able to leave the register for refills. It's $5 for 5 wines, or $10 for 10 wines. Keep in mind, this is a tasting, not drinking. You get about two sips out of each glass. They give you a sheet of paper with descriptions of all 10 wines, and if you are doing the 5 like I did, you select which ones you want to try. The server at the counter refills your glass when you are ready for the next sample and she explains each wine in detail. I know absolutely nothing about wine, so I can't comment on the quality, taste, etc. If you choose to hangout outside, there is at least one shaded table to sit at that overlooks their own vineyard. Some of the reviews had comments about whether you can keep the glass they give you, and I can tell you that as of May 2018, you do not get to keep the glass. The server told me this changed several years ago. Another thing I confirmed is that they do have cheese, crackers, dips/spreads, and bottled water for an extra cost. Now it's time to explain how I discovered that I'm not a cheese aficionado. The smoked gouda that I ordered was wrapped in a wax covering (like most cheeses I am told) and it was a light color, similar to the color of gouda. Well, me being the fool that I am, grabbed the plastic knife they gave me and proceeded to cut the cheese up and then took a bite with the wax wrapping and all. It actually wasn't bad. Cashier/waitress was a little rude. She also seemed slightly overwhelmed even thought we were the only table she was serving, other than the customers coming in to make quick wine purchases. Val Verde Winery has been on my bucket list for a couple of decades now since it's the oldest winery in Texas. My husband and I have been visiting wineries since he started chef school in the early 90s. so when I found myself 30 miles away, I said "Why Not?... I might not make it back this way again... " ... although it's just a little sad that he wasn't there with me... ~ BUT ~ I did bring him back a bottle of Lenoir with me for us to share! The neighborhood is so interesting... wish I had time to explore it more. Driving through, I noticed aquaducts running all around the houses... and the houses in the area are just so cool and unique so make a note to spend a little extra time looking around the area. The reason why I know about aquaducts is that they run all around the Mission Espada neighborhood in South San Antonio. Unfortunately, the ladies at the winery weren't too versed in the local history as they are both AF pilot wife's stationed here from somewhere else. I find that commendable that the winery prides itself supporting the local AFB and their spouses while they are in town. My suggestion would be to bring in local historians and/or someone from Visitor's bureau on a regular basis to the winery for educational purposes which could really help the clientele for people like me that are only in town for the afternoon. In reality, Val Verde Winery is the ambassador for Del Rio as there really isn't much else do around there. The owner (my guess as he talked about his mom living upstairs, wish we were introduced) came in a little while later and we all conversed about the history of the winery and how to correctly pronounce Don Louis which is the name of their oldest Tawny Port. We did all agree that is not "Loo-EE" as in "Luis" which is French. This winery was started from Italian immigrants from Milan in 1883. We also talked about the meaning of "Don". If I remember right, Don Luis is the second generation of the family who owned the winery and the next generation got approval to use to the name respectfully. I thoroughly enjoyed my personal one on one wine tasting for the first hour probably... decided to stay awhile longer and requested the $8 glass of the Don Louis Tawny Port ($40 bottle)... then the gate opened... got into a nice conversation with the next tasting group, afterwards we were excused to make room for everyone else that rushed in behind them. Wow! ... so I headed outside to enjoy the view of the vineyards just relaxing in nature and took a few pics... Tasting on Sat 27 Jan 18 included: Blanc de Bois, Sierra Madre White, Rose, Muscat Canelli, Sweet Red ("Church Wine"), Lenoir, Tempranilo, Merlot, Sierra Madre Red, Zinfandel, Sharman Port, Don Louis Port. Lenoir is a very limited edition made from the grapes right there in Del Rio and those cases were just brought in a day earlier. I was told cases will go quick as people buy by the case when Lenior comes out. I also love the way they make their Don Luis Port, taking 1/3 barrel to bottle then remixing the barrel with new product. My husband like the idea then started talking about bread 'starter'... only gets better with age! I would have also brought home Sierra Madre White (and Don Luis) but my day's budget was already blown. Due to the long drive from SA which is close to 3 hours, I'm not sure that I would make this a destination trip as there isn't much of anything in between here and there, but I would make it a "MUST DO" if you are in the general local area. Seeing that there isn't much to do in Del Rio, my fiancée and I were surprised when we saw a sign for Val Verde winery. Cool tidbit: Val Verde winery is the oldest winery in Texas! We pulled up a half hour before they closed and was able to do a tasting. The lady working here was friendly and helpful. We decided to try all the wines. Val Verde winery has both white and reds from dry to sweet. They also make two Ports, both which are excellent. I tend to prefer dry wine but really enjoyed the sweeter varieties offered here. My fiancée sticks to dry reds and liked the Merlot which we decided to buy a bottle of. Next time we will come earlier, take the tour, and enjoy a glass or two outside. read more

The experience of the winery and the quality of the wine are on two different levels. The winery is in historic Del Rio in a great neighborhood, and the show room is quite quaint. The staff is always very friendly, and they are quite accommodating about making personal labels for large orders. However, the wine is pretty awful. I guess that's what you expect when you get wine in Texas. Some of the wines taste like grape juice and others taste kind of like vinegar. The tastings offered at the winery are a fun event to take friends to when visiting, but they charge for tastings! I don't know if that's the norm, but in Virginia, tastings at the winery are all free. read more

I read a couple of the reviews about the wines not being that great. I would have to disagree the wines were great in my opinion. I got a couple of bottles and an engraved glass came with it which I thought was cute. Next time I'm in town I will be back to purchase a couple of bottles. The only downfall I thought was the experience...I didn't get a tour nor did the girl at the counter engage in any conversation whatsoever with us. Had she have made the experience better for us I probably would have walked home with more bottles. I was looking forward to seeing the owner I hear he is really passionate about what he does. I really wanted to like this place, I really did. It's in the neighborhood with the most character in Del Rio, it's historic, and HELLO, they make wine! I wouldn't call myself an expert on wine or wineries, but the wines here are borderline undrinkable. I bought a bottle of Chardonnay a few months ago, not bad but just had no body, no flavor. I gave it another chance when it was served at an event, this time a cabernet. Drinkable, but lacked and character. May as well been a regular table wine. Lastly, I bought a bottle of Lenoir, the most expensive wine they have at $30. It's a deeper red wine and it was recommended by the lady at the winery. It's one of 2 wines made by Del Rio grown grapes. It was the worst one yet. Usually you pour the wine, swirl, and sniff. Usually you get a bold oakey smell with hints of blackberry, pepper, or whatever infused into the aroma. Nope. Got a hint of wine scented vinegar. The taste was just the same, a bland and acitic red that lingers on your tongue and back of the throat. My husband, and a friend could not even tolerate more than a sip of this stuff. I can honestly say I tried: Val Verde Wines, Llano wines, it doesn't matter. Texas is not wine country, it's cowboy country. Stick to what you know. read more

If this review was based solely on the wine it would be three stars, but I had to dock a star for the service. I was in Val Verde for work and after a long, hot day in the sun my coworkers and I decided to check out the oldest winery in Texas before heading back to the hotel. It was about 30 minutes until their closing time, but we just wanted to pop in, poke around real quick, and buy some wine to take home as souvenir. The only way I can describe the girl at the front desk is "surly". She did not greet us when we walked in beyond a terse "hi" and answered all of our questions with monosyllable answers. When we asked her about the wines they had behind the counter, she just pointed us to a list on the table and remained silent. Look, I understand that it was a half hour to closing and she just wanted to go home, but at the same time when you're in a customer service position and your sign in the window says "open", it's still your job to serve customers and treat them with courtesy. Given that the winery itself is not much to speak of, they really need to up their game in making customers feel welcome if they expect to get any sort of repeat business or good word of mouth recommendations. Had a nice time wine tasting. Winery was nice. But a little disappointed that they didn't offer a tour, nor cheese or crackers. The wines we tasted were all delicious. I think there was only one Teddy and I weren't too keen on. I tried Port for the first time and instantly fell in love!! Left there with a bottle of Chardonnay, the Tres Madres which is a Cabernet mixed with something else, delicious! And I got a Port. Like I said, fell in love with it! I didn't know it's mixed with Brandy. Very crisp, semi-sweet wine. Definitely a conversational wine. Delicious. All I could think about while tasting these wines was what cheese, crackers and meats I could have with it. I'm giving it four stars as the wines were great. The girl there was nice, but didn't recommend or suggest anything other than the wine tasting. There was a posting that said cheese and crackers, but that was not offered. This adorable little winery has a cozy, antique feel with its oak barrel table up front and historic displays in back. It's a little small so when there's a busy rush, you may not find adequate seating but no matter how busy it is, the service is still very good. We came in just before a rush and the woman waiting on us still managed to fill our tasting glasses almost as soon as we had emptied them. She told us a little bit about each wine and then left us to our drinking. The wine here is pretty good; the flavors are unique and there's more of a variety than I was expecting from such a little place (I think there's about 10 of them) and I can't say I was disappointed with any of them. My favorites are the Lenoir and the Port- very flavorful reds- we ended up taking home a bottle of Lenoir and some wine glasses. Over all, a very enjoyable time. My only criticism is that I think this place would be so much more successful if they offered pairings such as cheese or chocolates. read more
