I could not believe that I got up for a yoga lesson so early on a Sunday morning. Not to mention that my date would share the same class with me. Entering the building through the side entrance of the massive hotel block Royal Garden, a lift took you directly into the gym. It seamed much smaller then what I was used to and the staffs were friendly. I even got my own white towel and the atmosphere was meditative. The Royal Garden Hotel Health Club & Spa is open to both members and non-members and offers a wide range of health and leisure facilities. I do enjoy having a look at different gyms to compare them and also find out where my favourite classes are. The Yoga lesson was very intense, as the classes are quite small; the gym instructor has enough time to make little adjustments to the exercises. Of course it was me who she constantly picked on and not enough, it was power yoga and very intense. Still smiling to my date on the other side of the room I was constantly conscious of my red head and bum while trying not to seek too much attention from the gym instructor. Just that you know - that was the last time I went to a yoga lesson for a first date!

The park was originally part of the garden belonging to the house. These were first developed in the 18th century, and between 1785 and 1806, were the residence of the first Viscount Melville, when they were visited by George III and William Pitt the Younger. The house and park take their name from one of the 19th century owners, the Sicilian Francis Platamone. He became the Duke of Cannizzaro, and although he left his wife to return to Italy in 1832, she remained in the house and acquired his title, albeit dropping one of the 'z's. The gardens as we see them now reflect work undertaken by the final owners in the 1940s, and were acquired by Wimbledon Borough Council in 1947. They are now under the care of Merton Borough Council. A "friends group" helps to maintain the garden. The garden itself includes a large lawn at the front of the house, a formal sunken garden, a substantial Arboretum, a small lake, and a woodland walk. It is well known for its displays of bluebells, rhododendrons, Azaleas and camellias in Spring. The gardens are free to enter, and are a lovely place to stroll and wander on a sunny Spring or summer's day.

This is a sweet little park and I wish I had time to hang out here for an afternoon - it's so different from little parks in London, more rural and "wild" - very enjoyable. Highly recommend bringing a book and a blanket to hang out and enjoy this space if you need an escape from the hustle and bustle.

I have done spinning classes at gyms in the UK and US and I am a huge fan of Soul Cycle . The staff was very friendly and welcoming. There are lots of lockers, big showers available with shampoo, soap, conditioner and hair dryer. You get a complimentary towel on your bike. They also offer foods and smoothies for fuel. For me, a spinning workout depends on three things: diversity and intensity of exercises, motivating and supportive instructor and nightclub quality playlist. Exercises: 4/5. The Marshall Street Leisure Centre is a community gym, pool, and day spa owned by the Westminster…read moreCouncil. It recently re-opened after a major refurbishment. The 25m pool is stunning---a relic of Victorian leisure and is worth a quick glance even if you don't go for a dip. It's conveniently located on a side street, moments from Carnaby Street & Oxford Circus. As the complex is owned by the council, it is remarkably affordable...most memberships start in the 40 pound range without any sort of long-term contract or commitment. They also do day passes if you just want to drop in and use the pool. In the pricey world of London gyms this is really amazing value. However, the low price comes with some draw-backs and the centre doesn't draw the same posh crowd found at 3rd Space or the Oxford Street Virgin Active. Marshall Street can also be crazy busy after work. Try coming here at 7pm and you will queue a bit to get a treadmill or to the free weights (the free weight section is small with only 2 benches). That said, come on a Saturday or Sunday and the gym will be virtually empty! If you're looking for an affordable no-frills gym with central London's most stunning pool, The Marshall Street Leisure Centre needs to be on your sort-list.
