My go-to hotel in Thunder Bay due to the proximity to the airport. They renovated recently which gave the hotel rooms a much needed facelift. The rooms are clean and they have pet-friendly rooms available. The only issue we had is that the washroom is quite small. (When you open the door it barely has enough space not to hit the toilet.) There is also a hotel restaurant which is convergent but a bit on the pricey side (the food is decent but nothing standout). read more

I stayed at the Valhalla Feb. 25-28, 2025, and here are my thoughts about the experience. Good: First, I was on a secure floor. As a female, solo traveler for business I appreciate that no one is accessing the floor without the use of a keycard. It adds to my security, and I loved that about the Valhalla. I am not sure if all business class rooms are on this floor, but if you are a single female traveling and are a nervous traveler, ask about this feature. The room was cool and clean. The furniture was clean and there were no weird odours. The interior of the drawers were clean. There was a bench to sit on, with storage underneath, which was nice when having to unlace or lace winter boots. The ironing board is stored by the bench, the iron is inside one of the drawers. The bathroom is modern and up to date, but it is small. If you are using the toilet with the door open (since I travel alone, that happens), the door is in the way of your knees. If you have any mobility challenges or are a larger person, it may be a challenge. The bath tub is full sized with a curved rod so the shower curtain isn't sticking to you. The body wash, shampoo, and conditioner bottles were full and the scent was lovely. The towels were clean, there was a solid grab bar, and there was a sticky mat for the tub bottom to ensure you didn't slip when showering. I loved that it was not in place when I got there -- it meant there wasn't anything growing underneath. Despite being right beside the airport, the noise was minimal. I was, however, on the side of the Inn that's not adjacent to the airport. It does make for a quick, simple shuttle ride. The shuttle had a bit of a pong. Not bad, but weird. One of the seatbelts appeared to be broken. The pool was clean, the water warm. I prefer a cool pool rather than warm but that's just a personal preference. The sauna, showers, and bathrooms seemed clean. There are towels onhand, but they're a little out of the way and hidden in a cabinet near the bathroom. You won't see them when you walk in. I did not use the fitness centre but it looked clean and the equipment looked modern. Nothing seemed to have out of order signs on it. The restaurant food was good -- I only ate there once. Delivery was no problem but since I was on a secure floor I had to go down to the lobby. A small trade off. There was ample signage about the housekeeping policy, and it was explained to me verbally. I requested a room tidy on my second day because friends were coming back to the room after the work day and they did a lovely job. It was just a matter of making the request. If I had stayed longer they would have come in to clean -- it's every three days. Meh: My only negative experience was when I phoned for my airport shuttle pickup. The person on the phone went 'uh huh he's on the way.' and that was it. I didn't know where to wait for him, what he would be arriving in, etc. It left me with a bit of anxiety as this was my first time flying in to thunder bay. Other than that, it was smooth, and I would definitely stay there again. The shower water pressure left a lot to be desired. The pool showers were powerful and I enjoyed those, but I'd have rather have had that in my room! I did not experience dirty hallways, trash, or conflict like some others did, but I was on a secured floor so that may have been part of it. stayed two nights before going on a vacatio and booked a room when we returned in 17 days confirmed it was booked 4 times and even asked if they needed a credit card to hold the room because our flight returned lat, was told by the desk clerk no and they would put a note on our reservation saying we would be in late at night. The two days we did stay there were a bunch of drunken Natives yelling and screaming in the lobby both nights and when we returned they had no reservation and no rooms left. Still needs a lot of work. The recently renovated rooms are better than they used to be. They have removed all carpeting in the rooms but housekeeping should do a better job keeping the floors clean. I understand everywhere is short staffed but I was there for a few days with a large group and no ones rooms got cleaned. We also never saw a housekeeper vacuum the hallway floors. We were advised you had to make a request at the front desk if you wanted your room cleaned. The food in the restaurant was good, nothing special and way over priced. Even though the restaurant is understaffed, the staff they do have are very friendly and good at their job. read more

I have been staying at the Valhalla for years and have never once been offered to join their points program, and or a complimentary upgrade! Having said that, I love the updated rooms (the non renovated rooms suck). The steak restaurant is awesome, Timbers is always good and the lounge staff remember my drink of choice even if I haven't been around for 6 months. Would have been 4 stars if not for the lack of frequent traveller attention. I will stay here again... But do understand a few new hotels are being launched in Thunder Bay ...so competition is heating up :) read more

Found a deal on Expedia for 20% off. Took the deal and now are disappointed. Room needs serious updating. If you want an updated room, you need to pay more. Our room was clean but old 80ish looking. Room was stuffy at first and then had to call maintenance to have them figure out how to cool it down and let some fresh air in. Had to run to Walmart across the street to get a fan. -1 Star Granted we left a bit later in the morning then usual, our room was never serviced. No clean towels or garbage removal. Had to call housekeeping for assistance. -1 Star At at the in hotel restaurant for breakfast. It was a breakfast buffet featuring what you would find in almost any hotel breakfast included Buffett. Except they had made to order omelets. This at a cost of about $17 per person for a mediocre breakfast. This was nothing to write or even worthy of picture of. -1 Star. Staff were courteous and friendly at every encounter. I just think breakfast could have been included, as most hotels do so now. Overall 2 stars as shower was hot and the room was clean and the hotel staff were excellent. Hotel just needs to update itself quickly before more guests get ticked off. read more

I stayed here for two nights on a weekend with my dog & spouse. The dog was delighted with the room, which had a sliding glass door we could use to go directly to the car and where he could sit and watch the world go by. Although it's next to the airport, we did not notice noise from the planes arriving and departing. We had a suite-style room which included a fridge and a table with TWO chairs where one could eat comfortably. [So many suites still require that one eat a room service order at a desk or a coffee table.] The staff was friendly. Room service was fine. The food was good. Internet connectivity was excellent. Room had an ant infestation and delaminating wallpaper pulled back with black mould on the wall. We let the front desk know and the response was "sorry about that, we are fully booked". We travelled with a one and three year old. No discount in price either; $240 for the night with our young family. Absolutely disgusting and disgraceful. read more

We stayed for two nights, just got home tonight. Booked a ground floor drive-up room. Shouldn't have. The room was so stuffy. Couldn't keep the sliding door open as it seemed a sketchy neighborhood and there was no screen. No windows to open. The curtains were big heavy ones. Some rooms had sheer layers and screen doors, ours did not. The room needed serious updating. I understand they are working from the top down. The drive up....well there were weddings so we couldn't even park outside our room. The carpet was so old and stained. The room smelled. We couldn't leave the door open overnight so we had the a/c on. We got home and washed all clothes, used and unused, because it smelled like that room. The light switches? ENCRUSTED with dirt. The weirdest thing: we were there two nights. No housekeeping. Maybe it's a Canada thing? The garbages were full, we were out of Kleenex and toilet paper, and towels all used. We called to get fresh towels. We had a room service tray that sat outside our door from Friday night till today...Sunday morning. We have traveled all over the world and always have housekeeping come in daily without asking. To top it off, two things. One, hubby heard something in the room last night. Got up this morning to mouse poop on the carpet. Two, they charged us seventy nine usd before we got there then three hundred plus upon check out. No one could explain the seventy nine. I will say the lady preparing the omelets was amazing. Funny and sweet. The lobby and pool area were nice. It's just our dirty stuffy room and lack of housekeeping, and the mouse poop....to charge us almost four hundred usd for two nights is ridiculous. read more

Do not stay here unless you want to be scammed. Stayed here 2 weeks ago and they put a $167 hold on my credit card and they won't release even though I paid bill in full on my debit. Credit card company can't help as hotel won't release! Horrible service and the manager Lisa won't return calls or fix problem. read more

My family and I had checked into valhalla inn at 5pm to a messy room, seets torn off the beds, trash full, nothing absolutely done. We left for 5 hours in hope to return to our room to sleep but again nothing was done. 2 call at 5 lm to notify the front desk about the situation, and 3 calls at our return of 10:30 pm. Still nothing was done and the house keeping department claimed the room was cleaned. If this is how this establishment treats their guests and family guests. We are all very mortified with thier professionallity. Never coming back and hope others will read this review and if they choose to come I hope they receive better treatment then ours. read more

I stayed here two times in the last 3 weeks, we are on tour with Hedley and had around 30 rooms every time. It is a huge complex and if you use the wrong elevator you drag your suitcase across the hallways forever. The rooms are ok the beds are quite old but good enough to sleep in , the bathrooms are clean and ok also. They do have room service and the trays they deliver sit around in the hallways for a long time. We checked out early in the morning and I payed separate from the group but they still charged the group for the already payed room we had to dig out the receipt to prove that it was payed already. Also they told our bus drivers to park the busses at a certain lot and then called them 2 hours after they went to bed to move the busses, considering that they just drove there from Regina ( the city that rimes with fun)they were pretty mad about that! The cleaning staff is nice but the front desk staff seriously lacks friendliness! The restaurant is actually good also the food that is, the staff there is pretty slow and doesn't come by your table a lot, so no refills on water or so. I try a different hotel next time read more

We stayed here for 3 nights as we were attending a wedding and it was more convenient. If we had a choice we wouldn't stay here. For the amount of money you pay for a dive room it's ridiculous! Their rooms need a serious overhaul. Clogged bath tub so when you're showering the water doesn't drain. Staff weren't overly friendly. Room didn't feel very clean. At the very beginning before the dance floor had been used my infant son was crawling around and he ended up with really dirty black knees. I don't think it has ever been cleaned. read more

This review is specifically for "the lounge" restaurant inside the hotel. The server was extremely overbearing; checking / interrupting us every 5 minutes. I'm all for checking up on people but that was excessive. Also the server got my meal completely wrong and I didn't want to wait so long again for food. Got our bills early on into the meal ( isn't that usually an after you finish deal?). The lady who greeted us was nice and helpful. Food was mediocre ( other people in our groups food looked decent then to find out later their breads were soggy and salad was less than fresh; mine was McDonald's quality ). read more

We stayed here for a week as home base and appreciated the staff, food and cozy accommodations. It's an older hotel, so adjust your expectations - it's been somewhat renovated but has missed a few things. (Room 517 has a big, long bubble in the rug; annoying to us, but could be a danger to the unsure-footed.) We enjoyed our stay, nonetheless. Going for Amethyst Class is worth it for a longer stay for the free hot breakfast at Timbers every morning. Eggs Benedict most mornings and omelettes on the weekends. The staff is fun and the food was pretty darn good-real cheese in their huge Mac-and-cheese and the side salads I had was delicious and packed with carrot strips and sliced tomatoes. For a Viking nacho serving, you should visit Skal, the bar. I kid you not it could feed four people and was tasty- nothing soggy about it. We'll stay here again for our next time up for sure. Advertises best hotel in Thunder Bay. Advertises all kinds of amenities and here is what we experienced. Check in was cold and unprofessional. I even had to ask which way to the elevator. No orientation like, this way to the restaurant etc. Booked in Amethyst class and got to room to find bathroom ceiling falling down. Beaten up furniture, USB port doesn't work, bed like a rock, old tattered bedding, office chair wouldn't roll, no robes, cheap toiletries, moth eaten shower curtain, no ice bucket, paper cups, plastic glasses, ancient clock radio, requested a second luggage rack and was told there are none, no turn down service as requested. We requested to change rooms and when I went to front desk they asked me, what room would you like. I was baffled. Shouldn't they tell me? Called for room service and got no answer, transferred to front desk, told me to hold a minute, waited three, hung up, no one called back. Will never stay here again and don't recommend anyone stay here. Marriott next door blows them out of the water. Want to give zero stars and won't let me. read more

My husband and I stayed here with our dog while traveling across Canada. This was the first hotel that we stayed at after hours of driving so we were very eager for comfort, a hot shower and a good night's rest--all of which we were expecting in abundance for the price that we paid to stay here. We stayed in section 'c' which I'm assuming is the pet-friendly section. The room had a convenient sliding glass door so we could park our vehicle right at our room motel-style, though you could go through the building as well. Though the room was convenient for us having a car full of belongings and a dog that needed to go out frequently, it was very outdated ie you feel like you just stepped into 1985. The carpet was thick and moist and just didn't feel 'clean'. The doors were old and wooden and our shower didn't drain nor did it have hot water. They also don't have separate towels for pets--so who knows whether a St. Bernard or human used the towels previously--either way we had luke warm water up to our shins while trying to shower. That being said, the staff is very friendly and deducted our pet fee ($20) on account of the shower. We were still really disappointed with the accommodations for the price that we paid ($150 +/night )....it's more on the $69 level. read more

Cleaning staff STOLE my jewelry! I left my room for one hour for them to clean and came back to a clean room and my jewelry box was empty. I called the manager and she said I had to call the police to start an investigation. She was so unkind and did not care. As much as this was her cleaning staff who did she she was not friendly more defensive. It's really really sad to be honest. I was in town for a funeral and to make matters worse I got robbed. They hotel doesn't have a safe so if you want to carry all your belongings with you this is the place to stay! I will never ever stay here again! read more

My biggest complaint is that when we checked in, the clerk at the front desk told us that there was a complimentary breakfast. Well....that didn't exist. The "buffet" was terrible, the pancakes were hard as a rock, bacon and sausage under cooked and the scrambled eggs not even edible. When we were getting ready to leave is when we found out we had to pay for our meal that cost $31 for two people. We spoke to a manager and she had the I don't care attitude no big deal to them. I would have much rather eaten at subway down the street for that price and the quality of food that we ate. I will never stay at one of the facilities again who don't care about their customers. read more
