From research, Ben looked like one of the top reviewed trainers in Manchester yet very reasonably priced. I have learned so much in the 18 months I've been training with him. Ben focuses on weight training - the area of the gym I used to shy away from! - but as well as an instructor you effectively get a nutritionist, life coach, and all round lovey guy! He somehow manages to make every lesson enjoyable, and the learning I've gained on diet and wellness will stay with me throughout life. I do both single and double lessons with my partner - I really enjoy both types. Having rarely done weight training before Ben (I pretty much only did cardio) I will also admit I was slightly skeptical when I started; to find I'd been training the wrong way pretty much all my life! The gym has all the equipment you'd expect: free weights, and more machines than you can shake a sweaty towel at. But it's the friendly atmosphere that to my mind makes it special. Everyone's welcome. There are various classes too and there's free advice for anyone who asks. Plus there are no expensive contracts: you can pay by the day or by the week, or fork out £20 for the month. That's not a lot to pay for feeling fitter.

There have been some real changes: upstairs, the boxing gym, home to Camp Detox ABC as well as professionals, has been refurbished and is looking fantastic. And on the ground-floor the fitness gym seems to be thriving. The real surprise, though, is outside where an outdoor gym has been constructed, including a massive TRX frame, which I'm told is ideal for team training and in particular building upper-body strength. Another plus for the place is that you don't have to sign up to some wallet-strangling contract beloved by so many other fitness establishments. Top marks all round, then.

V1ntage is for people who don't do gyms and I love the ethos of the place. It really is a great community and very welcoming too. The timetable is varied with everything from vinyasa yoga to spinning and zumba. My favourite class at the moment is bums, legs and tums which has elements of a core strengthening and circuit class. While challenging I enjoy every class I do at V1ntage and they have a great team of instructors who will make you feel welcome. The weekend workshops such as endurance spin and spin yoga are fantastic. They also have kettle bell and Kombat classes. It's a bargain considering I pay less than £30 a month and can do as many classes as I want to. In addition there is no joining fee or contract which means you can basically cancel whenever you like. I throughly recommend V1ntage to anyone in Bolton.

If you want an affordable price, wide range of free weights (dumbells up to about 70k), relevant equipment, good atmosphere and knowledgeable, helpful people then join AF. Alternatively, if you're the kind of person who does their make-up before/during gymming, just wants to 'get toned', or wants a million useless wrist curl and 'glute stretch' machines and a 5 star restaraunt - for 50 quid per month, then join Bannatyne's.
