The manor decorated for the annual Blaze. Sept 2017
    Sari Marissa G.

Van Cortlandt Manor which is technically located in Westchester County dates back to before 1723 and was home to one of New York's most prominent families. In its most vibrant days, the manor was home to an apple orchard, a dairy farm, a bee house, a kiln, a tavern, and carpenter and blacksmith shops. Van Cortlandt Manor was indeed a self-sustaining community. Van Cortlandt Manor manor was later used to assist the Continental Army with food and supplies and became a popular stop on the route from New York to Albany in the years that followed the Revolutionary War. The manor was overthrown by the Bristh army and it wasn't until John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased the property in 1953 and began restoring the manor, that it was back to they is was to what it once was. The Colonial style stone and brick manor house is now a museum and is a National Historic Landmark and on the US National Registrar of Historic Places. The manor is open for regular tours which depict what life once was here. They differ depending on the season so check out the date S and offerings before you go. There's a political tour, from past to present, Nature's Bounty digging into Farm to table meals of the times, and colors of the past. Quill pen and candle-making, and textiles are some of the activities you can experience here. They recommend leaving 2 hours for your visit. Most people however probably know the manor best as the location for the town's annual Great Jack O Lantern Blaze Festival where 10,000 carved jack-o-lanterns are lit. The festival takes place late September to early November and tickets (which sell out quickly) go on sale in August! Be sure to keep the date they go on sale saved if you would like to visit! We had a great time at Blaze for our first (and definitely not last) time this year!! The manor which lights up is spooky and make a great place for photos! They have creepy music playing to add to it. One of the side building has projected spider webs and a roped off path lit with just pumpkins. It makes your imagination run wild thinking of what lays at the end of it! So fun! This 18th century space is the perfect location for this festival. One we would say is definitely worth going out of your way for! Parking was free and the staff were all super helpful!

First time at the Pumpkin Blaze. What a wonderful experience. We came all the way from Staten Island and for us it was well worth the trip. Being from Westchester County, it was so nice going back and driving up Route 9. It was a well organized event. Parking was orderly and only a minor wait. Even though it was a chilly night just admiring the hard work and overall beauty of the property and displays helped you ignore the cold. The bathroom was clean and empty. We had already eaten in Tarrytown prior to arriving so we didn't eat but the delicious goods being offered was tempting. It's a great event for young and old. Looking forward to going back. If you do decide to drive I recommend getting there 1/2 hour before your ticket time so you have ample time to park.

Dating back to the times of the Dutch colonialists it pays homage to a time in our country's history - specifically to our beautiful Empire State. I'm a lover of both history and nature and you get both when come to visit. The museum is the house of a man named Jacob B. And the farm is a little farm but still a farm. Would be cool if they had a coffee shop in site like good espresso and can be a place to come enjoy the outdoors or something. Anyways. I was scrolling through IG and came across a really nice event that they were hosting for St Nicholas day. I'm so glad we came from the city to check it out. My teen wasn't really impressed as nothing is impressive to his standards if it isn't tech related of course but my two littles enjoyed themselves so much. They made Christmas cards and enjoyed a special treat at the end of our event. They met and fed a horse and st nick himself! Our story teller who sat at the fire side was engaging and had just the right amount of time telling her story.
