However, the pluses were really driven home when we went to Amsterdam for the next leg of our trip, stayed at a five-star Marriott, and found ourselves really missing our little Hotel Corps de Garde. As soon as you arrive, you are offered a complementary drink, and this is a great chance to meet the staff. Everyone with whom we dealt went out of their way to be friendly and helpful, and they definitely had the best suggestions on what to do and see in Groningen. They really knew the best local gems and were quite willing to share their knowledge. Their lounge is actually one of those gems, and we had a great time meeting the other visitors and guests. It's within walking distance of many restaurants, the main train station, and the bus station. As a Best Western Rewards member, I was happy that they thanked me for being a member when I checked in. The front desk staff were so friendly and helpful. They made the visit extra special. They answered our many questions about the area and gave helpful advice. Our room was on the small side but very comfortable. We had a nice view of the city. The air conditioning was tepid at best, but with the windows open, the room stayed cool at night. We paid extra for the breakfast buffet, which was well worth the price. There was a good variety of hot and cold items, Dutch cheese, and juices (the apple juice was my favorite. It was much fresher and tastier than American apple juice!). There was a coffee machine in the lobby that was free for guests. They also had hot water and tea bags available. We bought bottled water in the lobby, although their tap water was supposedly really good. They had some cute gifts and postcards for sale in the lobby as well. The lobby itself was spacious and welcoming, with lots of places to sit and hang out. There were also tables outside, just in front of the hotel. We loved our stay and would definitely return.

In this case, I'm giving the Hampshire Hotel three stars based on our needs during this visit. We stayed in Groningen which is quite close to Assen during our attendance at the Moto GP (in Assen). There were not hotels available in Assen. The Hampshire sits on a very large property next to a beautiful little lake with a running path and beautiful green fields all around it. In fact, when we were driving in, we thought we had made a wrong turn because it's down a long rural looking road. It's quite large for it's location and seems to be kind of a convention like hotel. For 159 Euro, we had a very large room and an extra 79 Euro a bed for our daughter and they only charged us for one breakfast at 13 Euro (typical European buffet). The rooms are very basic with a bathroom and a separate room for the toilette. The reception area is modern and airy. Outside, they have a very large yard with an outdoor seating area for eating or enjoying a nice beverage. The waitstaff were quite formal and attentive. We didn't eat much other than breakfast at the hotel and that was average. There is a pool, but I must say that it was relatively oogy. My daughter kept asking me if what she was swimming in was really water. It was murky and the ratio of chlorine to water was probably close to 50/50...made your eyes water. Overall, for a quick night's stay, it did the job.

A nice work desk in room to write on, hot water kettle with tea & coffee. Nice chair and side table. I love that hotel is close to central train station as well as close to city center yet on a quiet, peaceful street. On my next trip to Groningen I plan to stay here again. Reasonable room rates considering how nice, clean, modern and spacious the room was and in the best location, close to everything yet quiet. The hotel is in a good location -- near the center of the city, yet on a side street that is quieter than many others in the area. The hotel seems to be rather new; everything looked very modern and barely used. My room was very clean and quite comfortable. The bathroom featured a heated floor and a very nice selection of toiletries (from the Rituals brand). The drawback to the bathroom was the fact that the shower door seemed to be poorly designed, because as soon as I turned the shower on, the water began leaking out and flooding the floor. Luckily there were plenty of towels to sop up the mess. There was a hot water kettle in the room, along with a variety of teas, hot chocolate mix and instant coffee (along with sugar and creamer). The two employees I met upon check-in and check-out were very friendly and had practically perfect English (not surprising in the Netherlands). The price for the room did not include breakfast (that would have been an extra 100 Euros), and seemed a tad high for this area. However, I slept very well, and would definitely recommend this hotel for anyone needed a place to stay in the center of Groningen.
