There was really no one else in the restaurant, so I cannot comment on the normal atmosphere. It was very clean and bright. My biggest complaint, and it really isn't just this restaurant, comes from the amount of flies I had to fend off. As for the food, it was tasty. I started with fish soup, which was deliciously salty. For my entree I had ceviche, which I have never had so I tried it out. It was delicious, however the sweetness and the coconut flavor overwhelmed me toward the end and I wasn't able to finish it! I was able to have their apple tart for a dessert and loved it. The tart was soft and applely. No complaints there. Overall, it was a lively experience!

In general, I dislike eating lobster in a restaurant as it is typically a snobby affair and I have yet to master eating and enjoying a lobster without having it all over me. But Den Beer is super informal, it is like you go to your grammy's house to eat. The owner is 78 years old, she is a real gem: fierce but welcoming. The food itself is why I keep on coming here and keep on wanting to come back: the lobster is just DELICIOUS. I've tried several styles over the years and all are finger licking good. The lobsters are always super juicy and cooked to perfection, it would be hard to pick my favorite style as all of them are the bomb but maybe the grilled flambe with whiskey has a slight edge in my book. I truly wish Gusje, the owner, a long life and good health as I will continue to come again and again!

Large refrigerated cases faced the street with a variety of fresh fish, shellfish and premade seafood items. In the back the kitchen and food prep were visible and completed restaurant or to go orders were queued at its own counter (though staff would drop off at your table). Prices were quite reasonable comparing them to other restaurants in the more touristy streets. Also the cashier was very friendly with both locals and visitors. My favorite was the razor clams followed by the mussels and fish soup. Each was nicely seasoned and good size/ meaty for the shellfish. A separate bowl was also provided to hold all the empty shells. The WCs were located down a spiral staircase in the rear of the restaurant and was tiny. Overall a great start to my eating in Brussels.

I loved them both, but since I was not sure I would ever get to try the Dutch style in my life-time and despite it being a bucket list food, I was so enormously grateful. Even more grateful because it tasted amazing. I plowed through more than one I must admit. I might never get to try it again so I had to get more than one. Don't judge me. LOL. Anyway, the lady that helped me once I had one of the pickled and one of the cured ones was very patient and very kind. She seemed genuinely interested in what I thought and listened to me as I gushed like a fan boy over their products. I will never forget that and I was very appreciative. Holland ist ja eigentlich eher für seine Fastfood-Kultur bekannt aber die können auch anders. Zeeuwse Kreeft und Oestern aus Yerseke sind da nur zwei Beispiele. Beim Erkunden der Innenstadt von Roermond fällt uns das Eckrestaurant auf. Die Einrichtung ist gediegen, die Inhaberin und ihre beiden schönen Töchter haben den Service auf diese typisch holländisch-nuschelige Art, die von Deutschen gerne mit Charme verwechselt wird, im Griff. (See photo below) Die Karte ist klein, aber fein. Wir entscheiden uns für ein viergängiges Auswahlmenü. Die Vorspeise sind geräucherte Fischfilets, die, begleitet von einem Flusskrebs, im Salatbett serviert werden. Mein Aal ist naturgemäß fett, die Forelle meiner Freundin ist deutlich besser. Als nächstes gibt es eine Fischsuppe, die den Namen wirklich verdient. Die Wirtin empfiehlt uns für den Hauptgang die Seezunge. Schmeckt hervorragend. Das uns dabei nicht die im Menü angebotenen kleinen Seezungen, sondern die Große (unsere Spezialität seit 16 Jahren), die gar nicht zum Menü gehört, serviert wird, fällt erst später wirklich auf.
