We went on a sold out day. Yes we bought tickets a month in advance. The crowds were overwhelming. And, I'm trying to be nice here, the museum doesn't have van Gogh's best known work. (Which I should have realized) All in all, this is not a must-see in Amsterdam. read more

My husband and I had the most amazing time at the Van Gogh museum! It is truly magnificent and we learned so much more than we ever knew about Van Gogh! We decided to buy the audio tour that went along with many of the paintings and we were so glad we did! It provided excellent explanations of the images and style of painting and at what point in Van Gogh's life it was painted during. We didn't think we'd listen to it all but we did! You cannot take pictures throughout most of the museum, there was an interactive exhibit where you could, but otherwise, it was great to experience his works without peoples phones snapping away! Lots of great pictures. Not worth standing in line for 2 hours; especially with Van Goghs being in other museums here and in Paris. We bought iam Amsterdam cards and found out they quit honoring the jump the line feature. They instead sold a ton of online timed tickets. The line was probably 4 hours in back of us. We got there at 10am and the line wasnt bad. Little did we know that only 10 people might get in every 20 minutes. The security people said there were too many people in the building. You really can't go wrong with Van Gogh. His work is featured all around the world and his museum in Amsterdam does his legacy absolute justice. The Van Gogh Museum is one of Amsterdam's biggest attractions, so I highly recommend going in the morning right when it opens so you can avoid some of the afternoon crowds. You can purchase a ticket online or at the gate for €15 a person. Your ticket is a souvenir itself since it'll have one of his many portraits. As you make you way through the museum, you see not only some of his masterpieces but learn a lot about his life. It was interesting to see his intersections with other artists of his time and their influence on his own work. We were lucky to have gone during the "opening" week of the return of two stolen portraits. Lucky us! The gift shop itself is splendid and features some nifty things such as pens that resemble brushes (my personal favorite). I'd say you can spend an average of 1-2 hours in the museum before getting hungry and leaving. You won't have to go far because they also have a cafe inside the museum. read more

Woot woot, if you're limited on time, highly recommend going to this museum! :) BUY A TICKET IN ADVANCE! Highly recommend it since it's a pretty popular place. The queue itself isn't too bad as long as you have a ticket. Plan to arrive at least 15-20min before your schedule time in the event the line is long. There is no "special" line for pre-sale tickets vs tickets brought at the door. There are a ton of apps online that you can buy your ticket through. Once in the museum, there's a couple of gift shops and different floors that focuses on the different themes for Gogh's masterpieces. My suggestion is to grab a map and just wander. For the more popular pieces, do take note that there is a line to just see the pieces, so be careful not to cut others. As for photos, there are designated areas where you can take pictures and for the most part, you shouldn't take photos (a ton of no camera signs) UNLESS you want to get scolded by the guards/staff. Overall, definitely enjoyed my time here. ;D Doesn't hurt to stop by a coffeeshop prior to the visit. read more

This was an amazing museum and so glad I had the privilege and opportunity to check this out while in Amsterdam! As everyone probably already knows make sure you reserve your spot well in advance of showing up! Do not expect to get tickets the day of or even the week of..as they will more than likely be sold out! The museum is laid out nicely and provides a great overview on the life and works of Van Gogh. The little tidbits of knowledge on the plaques are great to read, and the staff provides assistance if/when its needed. The addition of their in house cafe is also nice as they have a great selection of foods. Prices are decent, but a bit higher than what you would pay normally (makes sense considering its in the museum). This is a must see, and you cannot NOT go here when you're in Amsterdam. read more

If you're a museum junkie like myself than you are going to to the Vincent Van Gogh Museum. I can't recall how much I paid for the ticket but it was well worth the price. Some of Van Gogh's most famous pieces are here. I used most of the day to meander and read the facts regarding each piece. You can easily spend half of your day here so make sure to plan ahead. They have a large grassy area in surrounding the museum which is perfect for a picnic lunch. read more

Long overdue review but I had to leave one for this amazing museum in Amsterdam. We loved learning about Van Gogh's masterpieces and life and tragic ending, the storytelling in the audio guide is well thought through and kept us intrigued. His self portraits and early work on everyday folks from his village was moving and I loved his artwork the "Potato eater". His style, use of color, expressionism was fascinating to learn and we spent several hours admiring his work. Recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid lines. There's plenty of bike parking right outside the museum like everywhere else in Amsterdam! read more

One of my favorite museums I've been to. So if you have the unlimited IAmsterdam card, you get a free entrance. But I didn't. Bought my ticket separately but for the next day since that day I wanted to go was sold out. You have a 15 minute window to get in on your purchased entry time. The museum is an experience. It takes you from Van Gogh's early childhood all the way to post death. Here, you will see some of his renowned paintings. However, Starry Night is at MoMA in NYC. Only certain areas are allowed for photography. So please pay attention to the signs. Take your time, read the little captions and definitely absorb the moment. read more

I would highly recommend going to see the Van Gogh Musuem, we ordered our tickets online (they book pretty quickly). The staff are all really friendly and want to make sure you have a great time for an additional 5 Euro you can rent their audio tour which was wonderful. I got to learn more about Van Gogh and it really helped me to appreciate his art a little more. There are a lot of different levels so be aware that you will be walking a couple flights of stairs! I'll be honest: I went to the Van Gogh Museum because I was short on time and wanted a brief cultural experience. I didn't expect to like the museum quite as much as I did. I'll also be honest: I stayed until they made the closing announcement. The cool thing about this museum is it's so very organized. There's two sides: an exhibition area (three floors) and the part that follows Van Gogh through his entire life chronologically (also three floors). I don't often spend time in art museums but found this to be a really interesting outing. It was cool to see how Van Gogh's subject matter evolved over time. He also painted a TON of self portraits. I didn't expect that. Before I visited this museum, I didn't know much about his artwork. Now I'd like to check out the MoMA's collection when I'm back in the States. On a more personal note: I enjoyed learning that Van Gogh didn't decide to be an artist/paint his first piece until he was 27 and had moved back in with his parents. As a 26.5-year-old, it made me feel better about my current job/country hopping ways! But back to the museum: It has a couple gift shops. The one near the bathrooms closes half an hour prior to end of the day. There is another downstairs near the exit escalator. I thought it was a bit too expensive and ended up buying a Sunflowers magnet in a souvenir shop elsewhere. I'd say overall this is an exceptional and highly detailed museum. A visit to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam is definitely a must. This should reinforce all of that information that you retained in your Art History classes in college many moons ago. He is a painter who created over 2100 paintings, almost 900 in oil. He was a genius but he only lived to be 37yrs old, taken his own life due to mental illness. This museum contains the famous paintings such as the as Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, Almond Blossom and The Bedroom. His Post Impressionist style is displayed in his paintings and sketches. The museum has the artwork posted on the walls chronologically so you can see his progression as an artist. To future visitors, the museum has a strict rule of "No Photos" in the museum hence you see no pictures in my review. As they say in the Netherlands "Verboten". Well worth the price of 18 euros, buy your tickets in advance on-line and save yourself the wait in line. read more

According to their website: "Tickets are only available online, including for holders of the 'I amsterdam City Card'. A limited number of tickets are available for each time-slot." I found out about their limited ticketing policy on the day we were planning to go. Checked the time slots and everything was sold out. Ended up buying tickets for the following day. Unlike the Anne Frank House (which is sold out for weeks in advance), you can buy tickets the day before. But maybe try to play it safe and plan a couple days in advance if you can. What can I say? It's a great museum. I'm not a huge van of Van Gogh's work or Impressionism in general (dig the portraits but not so much the landscapes) but his story really touches me. He was an incredibly driven and passionate man who unfortunately suffered from mental illness. This museum has some of Vincent's art, the art of his contemporaries as well as those inspired by him, information regarding his life and family, timelines, letters, and more. It's pretty crowded but I'd recommend taking the time to read about his life. I learned things I did not know (e.g. Vincent's brother Theo, an art dealer who financially supported Vincent's endeavors, died just six months after Vincent; Theo's wife Johanna is the one who continued to push Vincent's art and introduce it to the world. If it wasn't for her, I may not be writing this review right now). When I came, there was also a sensory exhibit called Van Gogh Dreams (sound, lights) that followed Vincent's life. Absolutely must go to this museum!! They do not allow photos inside, and the prints of Van Gogh do not do it justice as the original brush strokes and thickness of the paint cannot be defined in a print copy of the original. There's several floors and explanations in various languages near the paintings. I went in the morning, as it was less crowded, as the afternoons are very busy. The gift store carries what the museum has, as far as memorabilia, gifts, prints, mugs, etc. My favorite is Starry Night, which is not owned by this museum, it's in NYC, so none of the gifts carried Starry Night. You can rent an audioguide, which might be helpful for tweens it teens too. The top floor has the Japanese exhibit where Van Gogh was influenced & his art changes. I love the sketches from his scrapbooks and his original paintings are colorful, vibrant, and Fantastic. Very memorable & one of my favorite artists! I wish I could have taken photos inside, but I was compliant to the rules. Outside is a wonderful park, fun for the whole family! read more

The museum is very well organized with Van Gogh's work either grouped by theme or by timeline. Van Gogh fans will love the Sunflower collection, his self-portraits, and his peasant life collection. I particularly love his peasant life paintings, especially "Head of a Woman". The painting looked so real and so emotional; with the brushes showing the tiredness in her face, and the desperation in her eyes. Van Gogh was a very eloquent and emotional writer. Fans will love the collection of his letters which give great insight to his life. His travels within Europe. His relationship with his family members. His struggles, and his ultimate path to insanity and suicide. He died at a young age of 37 but have accomplished more than those who lived decades longer. So many things to love about Amsterdam, a museum dedicated to my favorite artist tops the list. This is a popular destination in town and along with the Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House had the longest lines. Although we arrived at an early hour, the queue was already at two hours. Our Holland Pass tix didn't help us skip the line. On the advice of the helpful lady working the queue, I grabbed timed tickets at the museum shop near the Iamsterdam sign for the next morning. That day we went right in. That's the way to do it people. Too much to see and do around town to waste time in line. The collection focuses on Vincent and his contemporaries. Highlights include the Sunflowers, the Sower, Irises, Prawns and Clams, Wheatfield with Crows and Goughin's painting of Vincent painting Sunflowers. I find the use of contrasting color and the frenetic brushstrokes mesmerizing. The collection of landscape paintings that were some of his final works, which included the Crows, left a powerful impression of the tortured artist. No photography allowed. read more

One of the best museums in Amsterdam! Although the Rijksmuseum houses few of van Gogh's paintings, the namesake museum has even more of his stuff plus great stories to unfold as you walk through the floors. Make sure you get the audio guide for €5, it's really worth it. You get a choice between the long tour where it has explanations of all the selected paintings with a headphone sign next to it, and the concise tour with just the highlights. We didn't get there till 19:30 and the museum was closing at 22:00 so we chose the highlights and we were at the museum for 2 hours! The museum has 3 floors featuring not only paintings from Van Gogh but other artists as well. Since Paul Gaugin was once his close buddy and had important influence on Van Gogh's art, the museum also explained something about Gaugin, so it isn't just about Van Gogh here. I love the layout of the museum. It isn't overwhelmingly big and you get to be upclose and personal with Van Gogh and really immerse yourself how it was like to be him, which to me meant more than visiting an art gallery without a strong focus. My boyfriend and I don't know much about art but we both thoroughly enjoyed our time here! read more

I'm really torn about this museum. On one hand, it's Van Gogh so how could one not LIVE for this museum. I was excited to see the Van Gogh's sunflower pieces and I wasn't disappointed about viewing a good amount of his flower portraits. The audio guide was super helpful, easy to maneuver throughout the museum and a really good education piece. I get that his art is so popular and is placed in more than just his own museum. I was really looking forward to seeing the original Starry Night, but I failed to remember that, that piece is inside MoMA in NYC. It's a great museum if you want to learn more about Van Gogh or are a fan of his artistry. Super informative and a great walkthrough. We visited in late September and it wasn't crowded at all. Downstairs, next to the audio guides, is a fun and free photo opportunity with his sunflowers in the background. Social media friendly so after you are happy with your photo you can email it to yourself. Tips: - Book an early time slot so there is less people. - There's a cafe inside where you can sit next to the clear glass windows. - If you get there early and there's no line, ask if they will let you inside earlier than your time slot. While the museum contains an extensive and gorgeous collection of paintings by Van Gogh, the museum was so crowded that I was not comfortable, nor could I properly see the pieces due to the crowds. I might have enjoyed the museum if it had not been so crowded. The three star review is for the exhibition that we saw (that was, shockingly, not crowded at all): Easy Virtue - Prostitution in French Art 1850-1910. It was a surprisingly fascinating exhibit that delved quite deep into the conditions in France that led women to prostitution and included numerous incredible paintings, photographs, and prints. It was a beautiful museum with enormous panels of glass. And it has a lovely cafe. You HAVE to buy tickets online ahead of time - otherwise you'll be stuck in a forever line in front of the museum. If you buy a ticket online, you have a thirty minute window when you can enter the museum. No line at all. If this museum weren't so crowded, I would have enjoyed the visit much more! As it was, it's not a museum I would return to on my next visit to Amsterdam. read more

The Van Gogh Museum is one of my favorite museums! I love that they rotate the work and it is designed so well to view everything.

The museum is small but has a largest collection of Van Gogh's works. The museum closed at 5 pm. The audio tour is a good idea to learn about the history of his work. The area around this museum is beautiful. You can park across from the museum for a small fee. It is closed to the park where you can take a picture with the famous Amsterdam sign. We did not get the audio tour with our visit but will do it at the next visit. It is definitely a MUST see if you are visiting Amsterdam! read more

Going to the Van Gogh Museum when visiting Amsterdam is something that every visitor should put on their list along with visiting the Rijks Museum. Located right next to each other on Museumplein, it's also a great place for photo ops in front of the IAmsterdam letters. The Van Gogh Museum however, can be done in one day, where as the Rijks Museum would need a minimum of two days to go through thoroughly. So if you're in a rush and only have one day to visit a museum, I would definitely recommend the Van Gogh. The Dutch are really proud of Vincent Van Gogh and his creations, and you can understand exactly why when visiting this museum. My favorite painting was of course the Sunflowers or Zonnebloemen. My husband loved the details of The Potato Eaters painting. Learning about the life of Vincent van Gogh was interesting and learning about how his sister-in-law Jo put in major effort in promoting his artwork after the death of her husband (van Goghs brother) is an example of how his Family really believed in his artistry. Although Vincent van Gogh pretty much lived and died in penury, his memories will always live on in the form of his creations. I'm really glad that my husband and I invested in the Dutch MuseumKaart (which is only available to actual Dutch residents) that allows us unlimited access to museums for one year. It is great because we don't have to stand in line just to buy a ticket. read more

The online tour for this museum is very unique and something I have not seen before. The museum utilizes a YouTube playlist to offer people at home the change to view each exhibit. The intended audience is people with a vested interest in Van Gogh's work, or those interested in artwork of that time period. As stated, the tour is all done through a series of 15 YouTube videos, all shot in 4k quality. The mission is certainly captured as the audience is able to take in all the artwork easily on their personal phone or computer. As it is a YouTube video, you are not able to interact with the site, but it works flawlessly. As I have yet to see another museum utilize this, I gave it a 5/5 star/. read more

We all know the backstory about Vincent, mentally troubled, starving artist who cuts off his own ear (not because of a love interest as I'd been told before, the museum says he was hearing voices in a fit of psychosis), but to see many of his famous and not so famous works in one place was pretty sublime. His vividly wild strokes and blotchy, messy textured canvases were beautiful. There was also quite a few of his sketches and drawings. Some of his more famous works that are recognizable can be found (minus his famous self portrait and Starry Night), as well as some not so recognizable, a fantastic museum to visit if you're ever in Amsterdam. read more
