The Van Gogh Museum is one of the top three museums in Amsterdam (alongside the Anne Frank House and the neighboring Rijksmuseum). It's a magnificent monument to the Dutch treasure Van Gogh, featuring hundreds of his paintings and floors of info about the brilliant yet troubled man. The artwork is of course delightful, and the whole museum experience is a treat. Strangely missing is any reference to Van Gogh's magnum opus, "Starry Night" (on display at the MoMA in New York), as the museum doesn't even acknowledge its absence but rather pretends it never existed (e.g., never spoken about or included in any postcards or souvenirs, which is strange). But most of his other classics are here, including "Sunflowers," "Bedroom," "The Potato Eaters," and many self-portraits. Note that timed tickets must be purchased online, and they often sell out days in advance. However, it appears they release additional tickets every afternoon for the following day -- so if you see your preferred day is sold out, check continually on the afternoon of the preceding day, and you may get lucky. In terms of planning your day, I spent about 90 minutes here, though you could spend fewer (if you read less) or more (if you want to do some of their free painting workshops). Definitely make reservations a few weeks ahead. We had searched the company site and a few tour groups a few days before but everything was booked. The day before, I'm not sure if they released more tickets or a group dropped out, but a third party seller had 2 tickets that we quickly took. The museum was gorgeous and had some of Van Gogh's famous works. I'd recommend the audio guide as it takes you through his life journey and really educates you about how talented he was. read more

Back in Amsterdam eight years later and I'm still excited to see the Van Gogh Museum. There's still a "no photographs" policy but I did manage to take a couple before I remembered and noticed the signs. Oops. The museum gets VERY crowded so make sure you get here as early as possible to avoid as much of those crowds as you can. There is very little seating inside, I think that's on purpose to get people in and out as swiftly as possible. If you're using an "I Amsterdam" card, entry is included but you do need to book ahead. I don't know how much wiggle room there is in those bookings. Love, love, love this museum. The history of Vincent, where he painted, his communications with his brother and fellow artists, and the explanation of his madness is absolutely wonderful. I loved my time here. This is, for me, the number one thing to see when you visit Amsterdam. I am not a fan of art ( I am history buff) but my wife is. So we decided to go here during our Amsterdam visit. If you are an art enthusiast and are in Amsterdam, it goes without saying that you can't miss this museum. It houses Van Gogh's famous paintings like the sunflowers, the bedroom, yellow house, and his self-portraits to name a few. Don't look put for Starry nights, it's not here. It is MoMA, NY. (and we missed that when we visited MoMA cause it was in some other exhibition, talk about luck, haan) 1-1.5 hours is recommended to explore this place. And more if you are keen to see every tiny detail. I don't have much knowledge so we finished in 1.5 hours. Anyway, this is not very huge, so you can finish. You will get free Wi-Fi but what's the use if you can't post pictures (taking pictures is not allowed, some corners are there where you can take pics with sunflower painting) also there are glass protection on painting, so its kind of hindrance. It was irritating me when the reflection of lights falls on glass and painting is not visible clearly. This is usually busy and online reservation of tickets is a must or some kiosks in the city. Rijksmuseum is just next to it, so plan your visit accordingly. read more

Simply a must see! I appreciate that they have timed tickets but found it to still be pretty crowded. They had a nice cafe that had light food that we enjoyed before venturing into the museum. I don't think I ever have been to a museum of this magnitude dedicated to one artist. It's so incredible to see his style develop over his career including some pieces he made shortly before he died. You can also see the change in intensity when he was suffering from mood episodes. It's such a tragic story but they do an incredible job of telling it. You are not really supposed to take photos and they have staff in every room to yell at you if they catch you. The gift shop is huge and does not disappoint either if you are looking for gifts. read more

I am fairly Van Gogh obsessed, so stopped at the Van Gogh Museum while in Amsterdam on a work trip was absolutely necessary. This museum accounts for as encompassing as possible a story of Van Gogh's life and works. The museum is thoughtfully put together, and it's worth taking your time and truly reading the walls and exhibit plaques that help piece together Van Gogh's life - especially his letters to his brother, Theo - as well as the evolution of his work. Keep in mind that not all of Van Gogh's work is house here. Many people come looking or "Starry Night", for example, which is located at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in NYC. I also highly recommend going early in the morning, as the museum is usually full of people. Perhaps most importantly, I recommend booking your ticket(s) for the museum in advance of your visit... because again, there can be SO MANY people. The only negative I experienced while in the museum had to do with the staff. Staff at the various counters weren't especially pleasant to deal with, nor were any of the security folks. I'm not knocking off stars for the unpleasantness of the security though, given they probably thought I was a lot to deal with too. Why? Because you're not allowed to take photos in the museum (doesn't matter if it's with no flash, which is how I prefer to take photos anyway... security will still tell you it's not allowed). If you take photos of any kind, you will definitely get scolded by the guards and other staff like I did. #WorthIt TL;DR If you're a fan of Van Gogh, don't miss this museum. You won't see every painting of his, especially given that some (like Starry Night) are held elsewhere. Still... you learn so much about his life, struggles, passions, painting style, and so on. Don't miss it... but if you take photos, prepare to be scolded. read more

My visit to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam was marred by a regrettable customer service experience. The staff, unfortunately, failed to meet expectations, displaying a lack of attentiveness and responsiveness, which considerably diminished the overall enjoyment of my visit. I felt like I was discriminated against when what seemed to be a manager completely ignored me, by not properly responding to my questions and going to the next person in line, that looked more like her. I asked for her name and it was not provided to me. This is no way to treat a customer that purchased tickets and numerous overpriced gifts the museum store. read more

I loved the Van Gogh Museum!! A few things to keep in mind: buy tickets in advance because it is quite popular and there is usually a line to get in with your tickets, but it moved quickly. The website says you can't have backpacks or umbrellas, which we followed, but is not enforced. Amsterdam is so rainy, so don't feel like you have to leave your umbrella behind! The website also said there are storage lockers but only for school groups, but when we were there, they were letting anyone get a locker and they had a wall of hooks for umbrellas. I did not do the audio tour, instead I listened to music with my AirPods while I was there and it was perfect. As I mentioned, this is a popular and busy destination which can be a bit overwhelming. There are many Spotify playlists with music that fits walking around this museum perfectly. I felt like I learned so much about Van Gogh here and I loved the way they humanized him so well and urged us to see him as more than his mental illness. read more

I was a bit disappointed with my small-group guided tour of the Van Gogh Museum. Photos were only allowed to be taken of a current special display that did not include actual work by the artist, and some of Van Gogh's greatest paintings like "Starry Night" are not contained in this museum. A principal painting of "Sunflowers" is, but this mostly dull yellow still life painting left me underwhelmed. And, while many self-portraits of the artist are quite vibrant with color and well-textured with a palette knife, those displayed here are so numerous that eventually it became almost monotonous to gaze upon yet another one. I do appreciate and like Vincent Van Gogh's work, but have enjoyed it more at other art museums I have visited in the U.S. and abroad. read more

I really enjoyed the Van Gogh Museum! This museum is located in a convenient spot and easy to navigate if you buy your tickets in advance. We arrived using the hop on hop off canal boat tour. But this is easily accessed walking from Amsterdam Central Station or taking the 52 Metro toward Zuid getting off Zizelgracht and following the signs. Once in the museum each floor displays beautiful works of art throughout the course of the artists life. There are detailed descriptions that gives you a vivid depiction of a time and place for each piece of art. I especially like the history of the Van Gogh family. This museum is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. When you are receiving your formal education for some, visiting this museum is something you could have never imagined. Could you actually see yourself coming this close to greatness in history? Because you truly CAN get very close to the art itself. Headsets are available for a guided tour experience. Most will find this very helpful. This museum was one of the main highlights of my visit to Amsterdam. read more

My husband and I love going to art museums when we travel. This one we heard was a must....and WOW....I will say, across the world, this was one of our favorite museums of ALL TIME!!!!!! Definitely buy your tickets online ahead of time. This is one of those places that can sell out fast - you don't want to come to Amsterdam and miss out on this experience. I would definitely opt for the audio tour too. It was very informative, entertaining to listen to, and also pretty succinct. The audio tour also has various options depending on how interested you are, and how tight on time you are. My husband and I opted for the "highlights" tour, which still took about 70 minutes to get through it all. You get to see some of Van Gogh's famous works, but also some of his less famous and earlier pieces, which I found fascinating. The audio tour goes into the various pieces, and also the various things going on in his life at the time. Very interesting to learn about his life. The very cool thing too is that you're allowed to take pictures of basically anything without flash! Wow!!!!!! Gift shop is amazing too, carve out some time for that. My only regret is that I wish I had carved out an entire afternoon to spend here. I wish I spent more time in the museum to peruse and really listen to each painting's description and analysis. Not all audio tours are created equally, and this one was exceptional. read more

Super cool , lots to see in this whole area there's a few museums nearby each other and they are all lots of fun. The museum is very well done, not judging nor offering any theories around what was bouncing around in this famous artists head. Just factual details backed by actual clothing tools notes, sketch books and of course his paintings. You are able to place yourself in the world much like it was for him during that time, and the meticulous attention to details and facts provide you ample room to imagine yourself what he was thinking, how his surroundings may have influenced his art, and what it can all possibly mean in each stroke of his paint brush. It celebrates his work even while telling what we concluded was a very tragic life. It leaves you to contemplate how we struggle or know people who do to fit in a place that seems not to fit and how life can torment and torture your soul; it is nature or nurture? read more

The building is located near several other museums, you can make a whole day of museum hopping. This space has a gorgeous lawn and plenty of space to sit and enjoy the greenery. If you are lucky you can even check out the artist market that takes place every month. The museum is packed with several floors of paintings and sculpture. Highly recommend using the audio tour (3.50 Euro) as they provide a lot of fascinating insight into his life. If you are looking to take home a little souvenir, there are 3 shops located throughout the museum. Overall it would take about 2 hours to go through the whole museum, audio tour included. If you're visiting Amsterdam, it is definitely a must, just make sure to book your tickets in advance. If not, you can always purchase a last minute ticket (like me) which is double in price - still worth it. read more

This is my happy place. I've been here once before about 15 years ago but this time I brought along my husband and we spent HOURS. About 200ish Van Goghs all in one spot and at times it can feel overwhelming so take your time to soak it all in. You'll need to get tickets about a month or two in advance, keep that in mind (it's currently June and the next available ticket date is August!). Same for the Anne Frank House, that one needs to be booked about 6 weeks in advance so just do them at the same time. Your ticket is for an entrance time and the person at the door will NOT let you in earlier so don't even try. There's a square directly outside the museum called "Museumplein" with tons of gardens with benches under shade trees to wait out any extra time. A few vlaamse friet vendors are in the area too but skip those as they're not made on-site and look like they're bought frozen from a store. The stroopwafel vendors there are good tho!! read more

When I was 13 I dressed up as Vincent van Gogh for Halloween, with bandage on my ear and I carried an easel with me the entire day. Vincent van Gogh is my favorite artist and for so long my dream was to visit the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. So you can understand there's no way in hell I'm giving the van Gogh Museum less than five stars. But in all seriousness, what a prized museum this is in Amsterdam. I mean, all of the museums are worth a visit in Amsterdam. But the Vincent van Gogh Museum is an absolute must because I know you had a poster of Starry Night in your college dorm room. For any van Gogh fan, you will be mesmerized here. Get tickets ahead of time. They sell out, as it gets super busy here. But even with how busy it gets, it doesn't feel crammed with all the other admirers looking at the artwork. The museum is huge, with plenty of space to wander for hours. I spent about three hours here, and only left because my friends were waiting for me. You can really spend all day here, taking your time and everything in. There are multiple levels of this museum and I encourage you to go in order, as the first level shows van Gogh's first sketches and works, and talks about the beginning of his life to the last level, which talks about his lasting impression he left with his paintings. You get the idea. I already knew a lot about van Gogh before visiting, but I learned even more about the artist. And to see the beautiful pieces that set van Gogh as one of the most popular painters in the world in person is an experience unlike any other. In addition to van Gogh's artwork, there was a special exhibit of another artist, a restaurant/cafe and multiple gift shops on different levels. Located in the Museum Quarter, the van Gogh museum's building is open and spacious, and is walking distance to other museums. I can't put into words how amazing of an experience this was for me, as it was a teenage dream come true. It was definitely my favorite part of visiting Amsterdam. read more

Most people know him as the artist who went mad and cut off his ear. They did a great job telling Van Gogh's story. They show cased his painting through a story/ time line on based on his perception and how painting was way of coping with his mental health illness that eventually led to him taking his own life. It's was very impressive his work of arts and breath taking at the same time. Van Gogh left an impression on me with new found appreciation of his work. We got to to see some of his known paintings, not all as they were on loan/ housed to other museums. Definitely a must see when in Amsterdam. They do not sell tickets at the door. We booked a tour guide to show us through the Van Gogh Museum which was well worth the money. I know about his most famous paintings, but not of his lesser know works of art. The museum is very well layed out. There is a time line of his life on the bottom floor that I found interesting, and a fake picture of the "Sunflowers" you can stand by to have your picture taken since there isn't any photos allowed at all in the museum proper. According to our tour guide there are 13 paintings of Sunflowers painted by Van Gogh, and all this time I thought there was only one. (My family when I was growing up wasn't into art, therefore the lack of knowledge:) :) I was expecting to see "Starry Night" but it is not located here. You really need a few hours exploring this magnificent artist, which we didn't have with the tour guide, but he showed us the "Big Ticket" paintings. I think next time we'll just get a audio guide and go it alone. They have a very nice gift shop of everything Van Gogh. I even bought a calendar for next year :):) read more

Didn't realize how cray cray Van Gogh was until I read up on his biography at this museum. He was a beautiful artist that had demons he battled which ultimately led to his demise at the young age of 37. While visiting in Amsterdam, my friends and I came here on a rainy day which was awesome since we could stay dry being indoors. The museum is broken into two parts: one side is dedicated to his infamous self-portrait photos and the other was for Japanese inspired art by Van Gogh/other artists. I didn't realize his famous photo, "The Starry Night" was at a different museum so I was kinda bummed. His life story is so interesting and his paintings are so beautiful up-close and in real life. This has to be one of my favorite museums visited-to-date since it's not overwhelming and it's easy to follow (unlike some other museums that are gigantic and have multiple floors/rooms for days). Definitely come here while visiting since it's a part of history worth learning and seeing! Oh and you can't take photos in the museum except in the main hall area/by the museum shop. read more

A really great museum to go to if you're in Amsterdam visiting. I never been to a museum like this one and was amazed with so many of the painting and artwork that we viewed. The staff were very friendly and helpful and at the time I was recovering from back surgery and was able to get a wheel chair and free admission into the museum due to being partially handicap, which was pretty cool. My sister and her boyfriend wheeled me around the handicap accessible floors and elevators to take in the beauty of the artwork. It was a very educational experience and I would do it again if I am back in the country. read more

Tickets are now at 18 euros per adult entry. The ticket line has moved to the road in between the two buildings. There may be a line for ticket sale. Also be prepared to wait in line for coat check. I think I waited for about 15 minutes for check in and 30 minutes for check out. Kind of ridiculous. They do have clean bathrooms. One is unisex and the other is by gender. Again, absolutely no pictures allowed inside. There are a couple of spots where you could snap a selfie. Just find the camera icon while you walk around the museum. I have to give this museum five stars because of the available English translation. You could pay 5 euros for an audio guide but you can get a pretty clear sense of everything on display. They do a superb job of explaining the history and contexts. The texts and translations are honest and easy to read. I now remember why this museum is at the top of my list. I don't often actually know how to appreciate many museums but here they make the materials easy to comprehend/grasp for commoners like me! read more

It's not too overwhelming and easily follows a path that everyone appropriately follows so it doesn't feel like you're missing out on anything or rushed to get through an area.
