Most of van goghs great works are here - but not starry night. That's ok we knew that ahead of time. The audio guide is well worth getting, as it gives you a lot of information on van gogh himself, not just the art pieces. We got our tickets online over a month in advance & spent about 2 hours at the museum. I enjoyed this museum more than the Rijks museum- although the rijks had a much fancier/nicer building. Yes there were crowds but not so much that we couldn't see all the art up close. read more

Van Gogh was a genius, an artist ahead of his time a style that wasn't quite appreciated during his life. As a matter of fact, there was a large number of paintings found in a barn after his death! It was also noted that a large number of his paintings that was given to a farmer was used as target practice! Imagine how many millions if not billions of dollars worth of paintings were destroyed?!? This museum is quite a gem as there are so many conceptual drawings Van Gogh did. The collection is enjoyable for those who love the Impressionist genre. The only drawback is there is absolutely no photography allowed due to "degradation" of the works of art. I'm sure it's due to some idiotic person not paying attention to signs and used flash photography to ruin the use of any photography. On a serious note, walking the floors and see his growth and explorations is quite revealing - from small canvas with field workers and reusing canvas to save money, to larger more recognized masterpieces. It just keeps getting better! The Van Gogh has a wonderful new curated collection where they've added paintings by those who influenced Van Gogh, his contemporaries, and those who he influenced. You get a really wonderful, integral idea as to how a man who painted for only about 10 years radically unleashed all kinds of rules about the media in which he worked. One of the best museums I've seen! Tickets can be obtained from the kiosks outside of the museum or online. I'd recommend buying them in advance if you know when you're going to be in Amsterdam. The slots fill up as it's staggeringly popular. Rijksmuseum is next door, as is the their contemporary. Make s day of it! read more

It is obvious why this is such a popular stop for tourists. We are staying down the block from the Van Gogh and have seen people lined up around the block all day every day since we arrived. So, we are thankful for the suggestion provided to us by the museum staffer who told us to buy a "timed ticket online" when we asked her how we could get on the short blue line. The museum has a great, broad selection of works including drawings and some of the expected favorites. In light of the extensive written material accompanying the paintings, audio guides are probably unnecessary. You should make the time to visit while here in Amsterdam. read more

The museum closes at 5 PM. Come at 3 PM and you'd be too late! Unlike other museums where you can avoid the crowd and enjoy an hour or two without the bustle, the Van Gogh Museum is packed. You'd meet a very long line and crowd. And then the dreaded news: the museum is no longer taking in people. Keep your schedule open for situations like these and have a plan B or extra day to see what you couldn't the previous days. If you happen to be in Amsterdam on a Friday night, you're in luck for the Van Gogh Museum. If you don't mind a lot of young people and music from a dj, you could view the museum late night until 10 PM. I went back earlier in the day for a second shot. The wait time to get in was about 45 minutes. The line does move, there is just a lot of people! Nothing to fret about though. The museum is a few floors and there is enough space that you could view Van Gogh's self portraits, The Potato Eaters, The Bedroom, and still life paintings in comfort. I particularly liked seeing his early work, sketches, and artifacts. Yes his journal, letters to his brother, and easel with paint has been preserved. It's crazy cool. The museum is also interactive. There are wall sized prints of Van Gogh's work that serve as an excellent backdrop for picture taking. Also, if you want to test your own art skills and paint in the fashion of Van Gogh (grids), there are computers and overheads so that you can see your own drawings come to life. The museum is great for children as it is hands on in some areas. See the paintings through a microscope to check out the technique in stroke and materials. Sand on the paintings? This was one of my most favourite museum in Amsterdam. The museum houses some of Van Gogh's greatest pieces of work, alongside those of his contemporaries, as well as artists who influenced him, and those that were consequently influenced by his work. The work is presented in chronological order so it is interesting to see how Van Gogh's style evolved and progressed over time. The collection includes some instantly recognisable pieces including Sunflowers and Boots, as well as some less well know, but equally beautifully pieces such as his Japanese works. Recently installed is the representation of "The Room". Its so interesting to see how the room would have originally looked, Van Gogh's description of his painting, and how the colours have changed over time. As well as displaying numerous work of art, the museum teaching you about Van Gogh's life, the influence his brother Theo had on him and his work, and the psychological problems he experienced, along with his epilepsy. I found his story incredibly interesting and it made me look at his art in a completely different way, Its so sad that he didn't sell a single painting during his lifetime. On the lower floor there was a very interesting exhibition that examined Van Gogh's canvasses used new radiation techniques. This allows us to see works that have been painted over and allows the art expert an insight into Van Gogh's progression as an artist. The queues for the museum are quite long but are fast moving. Security is tight and you are not allowed to take in rucksacks or take pictures. This is a beautiful museum which tells an incredible story. Make it top of your to-do list if you ever visit Amsterdam. read more

I liked Van Gogh before but I left with a much deeper appreciation for the artist and his contemporaries. A must see.

We woke up late yesterday afternoon, so we didn't have a lot of time to visit all the museums in Museumplein. We ended up choosing Van Gogh since it was smaller. I'm not a fan of all his work since some of his paintings are dark and depressing, but I did like some of his paintings that were done in pointillist technique. Bummed out that the Starry Night wasn't there, but at least I got to see the Sunflowers. His collection of paintings is divided into different rooms organized chronologically into different stages of his life. The exhibition started out gloomy showing mostly paintings of poverty and peasants. Then lighter when his self-confidence was growing. I supposed he painted those pieces that everyone enjoyed when he was at a peek of positive energy. Then it got a little dark again when he was diagnosed with mental illness. The works of other artists are also featured here such as Montmartre, Toulouse, and Picasso. My favorite painting that is currently showing at the museum is not by Van Gogh or any of those artists I mentioned. It's the one by the symbolist painter, Redon. The one called The Buddha. read more

Spectacular is the best way I can describe this museum! From the instant I laid eyes on my first Van Gogh years ago in the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in NY, I've been hooked. His artwork speaks to me in a way no other artist ever has. Because much of Van Gogh's work is so 3 dimensional, photos of his works do not begin to do them justice. The full chronicling of his brief and tortured life from his early works through the varying phases of his style development was exceptionally well done. Letters written to his brother Aaron that were narrated at multiple listening stations along the path through the museum gave glimpses into his mental and artistic struggles making it a very personalized & emotionally moving journey. Seeing hundreds of Van Goghs under one roof is incredible and truly a delight for the senses. We spent slightly over 4 hours covering the entire museum, including the special gallery exhibit. read more

I am going to have to give this place 5 stars mainly because Van Gogh is one of my favorite post-Impressionist painter with Georges Seurat :D I love how the whole museum told a story of Vincent Van Gogh through the 10 years he spent as a painter. You won't see his most famous works like the starry nights (which you can find in ny...) or Cafe Terrace at Night (found in Otterlo Nethernands) But I got to see Bedroom in Arles, Sunflowers, some Japonaiserie paintings and a bunch of his well known self portraits. I so wanted to LOVE this place Sadly it was just ok. The works of art were of course AMAZING. But the crowds, the many rules, lines... was just stuffy. Was just hard to see and enjoy the art work with a moving line constantly going by the pieces, sweeping you along or blocking your view from a bench. Left feeling disappointed by the experience. Somewhat expensive, seriously overcrowded, and just somehow lacking. The audio tour is neat. Has some gems, worth it even with all the written descriptions. But don't you dare snap a pic! Even without a flash, its a major no-no. I can understand the policy, but still it can be annoying. But I guess if it avoids a million selfies further obstructing the views, I can get behind it. Will return, only for my love of Van Gogh, but will try to find a off-day/hour. read more

Going in to the museum, I didn't realize just how much the exhibits would captivate me and make me feel. I do enjoy art, Van Gogh being among the artists I appreciate the most, but I feel that being able to see his artwork in person really brought things into perspective for me. To be able to see something that he created over a hundred years ago, to see so many people of different nationalities standing around and appreciating the work that he did when very few did so while he was alive is just miraculous. Seeing his artwork helped me to see things through his eyes, how colors and features stood out to him in the most beautiful and even the darkest ways. Starry Night Over the Rhone in particular stood out to me, reminding me of the nights I spent walking around Amsterdam and admiring the way the lights reflected off of the water, and a sleeping city. My other favorites, his Sunflower painting and The Potato Eaters, were absolutely captivating. His works with darker color schemes are generally less popular, but I was extremely thrilled to be able to enjoy them as they were. The area with all of his self portraits was also among my favorites; Van Gogh painted the way he saw himself, and his perspective changed with each painting. Talk about your 19th century selfies. I learned many things about Van Gogh here that I did not know before. The entire museum is extremely informative as well as captivating. You have the option of listening to recordings that tell you more about the paintings themselves, or you can lead your own self-guided tour and admire the paintings from your own perspective. There are also dozens of other paintings here, not just Van Gogh; some works that inspired him are here as well, as well as a few paintings by Edward Munch, most notably, one version of The Scream. You can easily kill two or three hours wandering around this museum. It's probably one of the best that I've ever been to. Naturally I spent about twenty minutes at the gift shop too, trying to figure out what to bring home. They have everything you can think of there, all with Van Gogh art printed on things -- magnets, buttons, shirts, bike bells, dog collar/leash sets, as well as prints of his artwork. His artwork certainly made me feel that overcoming odds was possible, that no matter what people may say about you, never let it get to you. Van Gogh spent many years fighting a terrible depression that ultimately led him to end his own life, as documented in many of his paintings, but it never stopped him from creating things that have influenced so many people around the world. The Museum is amazing!! I feel in live with Van Gogh's art many years ago but this museum really allows to you appreciate every aspect of his art and this thinking. He truly thought about each and every painting. Definitely get the audio guide!! You can tell they put tons of thought and effort in it, rein acting each of his letters and how they Coinside with his painting. My son is a huge fan and so of course we had to go. It is an extraordinary detailed, wonderfully curated museum with a sense of history and chronology of the artist's evolution. I was personally obsessed with the light in the orchard paintings. We were also fortunate that our visit happened during the temporary Sunflowers exhibit and Van Gogh's dreams. Really wonderful. I am not an art person by any means, but since I bought the I Amsterdam booklet, it got me into a lot of museums for free. The only thing I knew about Van Gogh was that he cut off his ear and he was the one that created Starry Night and a piece that had the big sunflower. Other than that, I have no education about him. This museum was again filled with people that apparently loved Van Gogh or just wanted to see some of his pieces. In person, the pieces that were shown were really good. Bold brush strokes in bright colors conveyed emotion and passion. I didn't spend too much time thinking about the works of art like you see those art hipsters doing in movies. If it looked good, I looked at it, appreciated it, then moved on. The most interesting part of the exhibition was the science of art restoration. I'm a nerd and like when things are explained well and that exhibit demonstrated how paintings age, fade, and crack and what modern technology does to help stop that deterioration. I found that more interesting than the art itself. Overall it was a nice place to hang out and people watch. read more

During our visit in April 2013 the Van Gogh Museum was temporarily closed for renovations so we viewed Van Gogh's artwork collection at the Hermitage Amsterdam. I like Van Gogh. He's a strange mix of crazy and genius. The Dutch artist is best known for the raw beauty and bold, bright colors in his post-Impressionist paintings. While he did draw as a child; he did not start painting until his late twenties. In just over a decade he managed to produce more than 2,100 pieces, including 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketchings and prints. Tickets to the Van Gogh museum are 15 Euros and you can purchase tickets from the museum's website. While this museum does not get as busy as the Anne Frank House why risk waiting in line? It's easier to buy the tickets online! Would love to see the renovated museum next time we return to Amsterdam. read more

Visit Date: March 18, 2015 When Hubby and I went to visit our mom's friend and we got to Amsterdam and I found out the Van Gogh Museum was here I had to see it. The museum isn't very large so it doesn't take that long to go through the entire collection. The first floor houses his self portraits, the second and third floors house his other works. The gift shop is awesome, tons of Van Gogh merch I just wanted to buy everything. Be warned if you bring a back pack or large bag they'll make you check it so try to avoid doing that. I was confused about the no photograph signage, I wasn't sure where we could or could not take photographs so I just snuck a few photos with my smart phone. This is 100% dedicated to the worldly famous Dutch Painter Vincent Van Gogh and it is indeed a great great show of his art. It has probably the most comprehensive collection of Vincent's paintings and also a lot of his friends' and artists he influenced or influenced his art. Now and then it hosts temporary shows, usually connected with Van Gogh ... as it is currently ... Munch/Van Gogh. .... an incredibly nice and well cured contempoary never met artists. The museum had been recently renewed so it offers the best of the museum experiences, and in Amsterdam we do know how to make it right. MAKE SURE to book your ticket in advance via the museum's website, so you can skip the queue which is ANY TIME very long ... no matter the weather or the day of the week. If you have your pre ordered ticket you get in with no waiting. The museum inside can get crowded, but that is the price for HOT art shows. Great Museum shops inside with any type of memorabilia... and yes... even key holders with the famous ear Van Gogh cut off himself... sounds creepy.. but it is really fun.\ Free WiFi all over the place. Pity you can not actually take pictures of any painting.... nowadays phone pictures are allowed as long as you do not use flash. This is one of my favorite museums. The closest tram stop is Van Baelerstraat (NOT Museumplein). Perfect day would be Van Gogh, lunch at Museumplein/park, Rijks museum and then Anne Frank Huis (which is open until later). The audio tour is well worth the 5 Euro and tells his story. If you have the Museumkaart, then you can bypass the line of tourists. Free coat check. Love this museum! Great views of the park too. read more

I am torn about my experience here. While I enjoyed many of the works featured here, a lot of his most famous pieces are not housed here but elsewhere around the world (Starry Night, where are you?). So it was a little disappointing. It is also very very crowded so it's hard to enjoy the art when you're trying to navigate in and out of crowds, tip toeing over peoples' heads. If you have an iPhone you can buy the audioguide app instead of renting an audioguide from the museum. If you don't have headphones they will let you borrow a set if you show them that you downloaded the app. I read online beforehand that if you have a Museumkaart there is a separate queue that will allow you to enter without having to wait in line. However, when I got to the entrance the Museumkaart queue also had a lengthy line. Not as long as the line for buying tickets but you certainly could not just walk in. I would recommend purchasing tickets online for this museum to avoid lines. read more

It's really beautiful and it conteins some of the main paintings such as the chair, the sunflowers and self portrait I still don't understand the modern art included in the show. Obviously as far as the art goes, this place is five star. So I'm not even going to start on how much I love Vincent's work, I'll just tell you what knocks the fifth star off this place. ~ The layout of the museum is pretty confusing and without a clear route to walk through the place without walking past some things twice. ~ You MUST leave bags at the coat check in, but loss of possessions is at your own risk... (sketchy alert) ~ I'm not quite sure what's at the end of the escalator next to the café, but I feel like I may have missed half of the museum because I didn't feel like stepping on to the escalator. They should make it clear where it leads to. ~ My favourite series of his paintings are not at this museum. Boo! And there you have it, my short list of negatives at the van Gogh Museum. Lucky me! I had a few hours in Amsterdam on a Friday night and as luck would have it - the museum is open until 10pm on Friday. They also have a DJ and a bar and spot to buy appetizers. It was perfect! I stopped in around 7pm on a Friday night, found the party going on and decided to join. The museum isn't huge, but it is nicely done with each floor set up somewhat chronologically. The way this is done gives a really nice perspective on Van Gogh's life. I can't believe I have seen some of the paintings I have only seen in books. I also didn't know that the painting in the Art Institute in Chicago has the 2nd painting of his room in Arles...and this museum has the first (apparently a 3rd is elsewhere). I also enjoyed that the museum holds other art from artists who inspired Van Gogh - that was a really nice touch as well and some of my favorite artists were represented. A definite must-see! Also, don't forget to visit the basement which houses some really beautiful photos. read more
