Wow. The building. The grounds. Oh yeah, and the artwork! What a magnificent museum this is. The chronology of Van Gogh is reflected in the order in which you view his work. You see his artistry mature from the dark, rough, early work through his exploration of the use of brighter colors... and then his decent into the throes of his illness. On the upper floors there are works by several of his friends(?) and contemporaries, including a few by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Paul Gaugin (before his foray to Tahiti). Even the restaurant in the museum had tasty food that was not overpriced (by Amsterdam standards). The only reason for withholding the fifth star was because so many of the paintings were housed behind glass that reflected the glare of the lights around them... and THAT was a shame. read more

The cafe is weak...yes thats right...the cafe! I love a good expensive museum cafe. Here the selection of eats is a bit crummy. But, back to the art, show up early and avoid the line. The Van Gogh Museum was on the list of top attractions to see while while Amsterdam. I did not know how much I was going to learn here about the artist, his career and his art. Van Gogh had a short active career, from about 1882 to his death in 1890. The museum affords an excellent overview of his changing styles, from the dark mood of The Potato Eaters, to his bright sunflower painting, to the frazzled looking style of his late work. Along the way, self-portraits and still-lifes appear in each of his varying styles, documenting his artistic progression. I was quite taken with his paintings of peach trees and almonds in bloom. They reminded me of Washington's cherry blossoms. A special exhibit traces the last year of his life, from his stay at an asylum in Arles, France, to his death at Auvers. In addition to paintings, newspapers clippings, photographs and correspondence attempt to show his state of mind at this time. The museum is laid out on four levels. Each one showcases a different style as well as painting of his associates and contemporaries, like Gauguin's paring of Van Gogh painting sunflowers. One exhibit focuses on Van Gogh' perspective technique and how he sketched perspective behind a painting We purchased our tickets online in advance of leaving on our trip. This was a real advantage over waiting in the long ticket queue and I recommend it. We enjoyed lunch at the museum's cafe, Café Le Tambourin. This was a nice buffet of soups, salads, prepared sandwiches and food and and pasta. Free WiFi for visitors. read more

A must visit if your'e in Amsterdam. I've seen a lot of Van Gogh exhibits in the past in other countries, and it pales in comparison to the amount of information you can gain regarding his history and life. They did an incredible job at illustrating his life cycle, from birth to the time of his death. I had a whole new perspective and spent quite the time reading all the information available about him to get a solid grip of who he was. It'll take a good 2 hours to see the entire place if you choose to read everything in there. Best thing is to get your museum tickets at the tourist booth at the center square and get the TIMED tickets of what time you will enter to avoid the insane lines to get in. Even with the designated entry time, the wait was about 20 minutes to get in...much less than the others who seemed to be in the regular entry line for over an hour. read more

Wonderful museum it has 3 floor and gets crowded quickly. You can see many self portraits and other works of art. I would advise that you buy the tickets online then show up. we purchased online for 11am and by 3pm the line was like 3 blocks long. The museum is very crowded even if you get advanced tickets . They seem to let people in every 30 minutes lots of people start at the bottom but i would recommend as soon as you get in start at the top and work your way down because lots of people use the audio guided tour devices and like to go in order. No photos allowed of the art work but you can take photos of the non painting so i would recommend just checking in your camera so you dont have to take it around. There are 2 main shops and after the tour i would recommend you going to the main one downstairs because people go to the one upstairs right after they are done. The tragically short life of the man through his works, correspondence letters to his family, mainly his brother and fellow contemporary artists is compelling. A stunning and inspiring "nest" of his most famous work especially with the Sunflowers exhibit. Note:they don't have Starry Night because that is in the MOMA New York. read more

This museum shows the fascinating life of Van Gogh and many of his paintings. Even though they didn't have several famous paintings such as Starry Night, it contains many of his self portraits and other works you don't normally see. The descriptions and history of his life were also very interesting to read, coming from someone who skims descriptions in museums. It easily took around 2 hours to walk through the museum, but that's only because I stopped and read every description. I gained a lot of insight on Van Gogh's life and felt humbled and awed by all of his works and dedication to his craft. As a heads up, the wait to buy tickets is pretty long. It took me 40 min to get to the ticket window in the afternoon, so I suppose you should show up earlier or figure out a more optimal time. There is no student discount and an adult ticket is 17€ with no audioguide. read more

The art is fantastic but the crowds are huge. Try to come early , becuase I was there 1.5 hours from closing and it was still packed. I like my musuems empty and quiet and this place has throngs of tourists. The audio unit is a must, it tells a great story about Van Gogh development as an artist. You can get thru in 1.5 hours, and not feel rushed. I had to leave because the crowds were just too much. read more

Beyond 5 stars!!! Besides the Louvre in Paris, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is one of my all time favorite museums. Its small enough to enjoy in one day and the bottom story contains special featured artist. When I visited several years ago, I was so blessed because my favorite artist, Claude Monet, was on exhibit. I nearly broke down and cried because I was so ecstatic! I had no idea Monet would be the special featured artist and I was speechless. The museum did not disappoint and was very affordable. To see such great works by Van Gogh and Monet up close and personal was an experience in itself and indescribable. Amazing artists with astonishing works of art. We only had time to see one museum so we picked this one. I really enjoyed my time here and saw a number of my favourites (except "Starry Night," boo). The museum is well organized and presented a lot of information about the artist's techniques and personal history; the geek in me immediately dorked out and took copious notes. Photographs are (officially) not permitted, although I spotted many visitors surreptiously taking pics with their phones. (There was only one museum guard who enforced the "no photos" law by pointing out signs stating the same to an unlucky tourist caught red-handed.) Free wifi is a bonus. Even though I'm no art expert and even though I knew very little about Van Gogh before visiting this museum, if you're in Amsterdam it's worth the stop. They have a great collection of his works laid out chronologically along with biographical information, the combination of which offers great insight into the background and progression of his artistry. The museum also offers audio tours and on the upper floors there are additional galleries with different artists and styles that may also appeal to you. All in all I spent a comfortable hour and a half there. If you went to go really in depth you could spend at least two hours. My only complaints were that no photography was allowed inside (understandable) and that Starry Night was not there. I know that MoMA currently has it but that would be a terrific addition to this great collection. read more

The Van Gogh Museum was not only my favourite museum in Amsterdam, but likely ranks at the top of my favourite museums anywhere. I came here with minimal knowledge of him and his art, and left more than informed. Everything on the four floors was fascinating and interconnected, from the early sketchings and watercolours, to the correspondence with his brother, to the paintings from his collection and contemporaries. And while I knew many of his more famous works from before, I was surprised at how many other paintings I saw that I fell in love with. He was definitely a most prolific and talented painter. The only part that wasn't as interesting was the top floor, which is the least relevant to Van Gogh, in my mind. That's not to say it was boring, but it didn't resonate with me as much as the rest of the exhibit did. Still, it was time well spent. I wholeheartedly recommend stopping by here on your visit - and I'm not even the type to visit museums on vacation, but this one is worth it. read more

This is a great museum if you like Van Gogh. I'm not that in to him, but I didn't want to miss the museum. Glad I went- would not go again. With the Iamsterdam passes, and some other passes, you get in a much shorter line. With a timed pass the line is shorter still- and the lines here are awful. Also, the museum is very crowded. It's not a great experience seeing the paintings with what feels like a soccer stadium of people. The experience is more like a cattle drive, and you are one of the cows. moo I liked the new paintings I saw, and it was nice to see Van Gogh's contemporaries hung as well. There are elevators if you have mobility issues, and there are benches, but they are not comfortable. read more

I'm not super into art but you really can't go to Amsterdam without checking out the Van Gogh museum. I learned a lot about his life and saw some of his art that I'd never seen before. After viewing all the exhibitions, I wondered...where is the infamous "Starry Night"? I googled it and was disappointed to learn that it's right here in NYC at MoMA. I traveled thousands of miles just to be able to see a painting that's right in my hometown. How can you have a museum solely dedicated to one artist and not have his most famous work? 5+++stars. Reopened after extensive renovation. To see many of Van Gogh's famous works up close is a treat beyond compare. The audio tour enhances the experience so look like a nerd. Who cares? Was surprised to know that he only painted in earnest for a mere 10 years. He did have some classical training , but not much. His mental illness (bipolar? just a guess) was very sad although perhaps it helped him to create glorious art. I was overcome with emotion during my time here and actually had to regroup back in my hotel room, afterward. read more

If you have the time this museum is a must! I highly recommend doing the audio tour, otherwise I would have just breezed by everything. The audio tour goes into further depth to a lot of the paintings, helps you understand the story behind Van Goghs headspace during certain times of his paintings. Theres a lot to see but you could get it done I'm a little over an hour. Just an absolutely awesome museum that shows van Gogh in a way that I have never seen before. Make certain that you go through the entire museum. It is only a few floors but everything in it is worth looking at. I enjoyed the timelines and letters that they provide in addition to his artistic works. I was able to get an overall better idea of his life and his work. For example, I had no idea that he was so prolific within a short 10 year period. I am not a historian or Art lover, in fact I don't even like Museums. But I will say this place is pretty cool. The whole area around here is pretty lively, there are hundreds of people chilling outside enjoying the sun. Its close to the Amsterdam sign which is also a plus. The place is around 6 floors, and if you actually read whats on the walls you can spend a good amount of time here. The art is beautiful and gift shop has some great things. Overall I do think this place is worth the $ and visit, atleast just to stop by the Museum District area!! read more

Definitely a must see in Amsterdam. Whether you are into the arts or not, the Van Gogh and Munch exhibits were pretty awesome to see in person. It was cool to see so many of the paintings portrayed on posters and post cards right in front of your very eyes. Photos aren't allowed which was kind of a bummer but I guess it forces to viewer to concentrate more fully on what he/she is viewing which should be the purpose of why you are there in the first place anyway. All in all I am glad I came and got to see so many of these famous works of art with my own eyes. read more

The second thing on my bucket list while on my most recent visit to Amsterdam was the Van Gogh. We chose to chance it by walking up to ticket window to see if same day tickets were available. Got to the ticket window at 10:50am for 11am entrance. The guy said to go over to the blue door. We walked over to the museum looking for a blue door. It's not a blue door so much as it's a tinted glass door. Once we entered, what a zoo. So many folks had the audio that there was a traffic jam at almost every painting. We ended up doing a high level overview of the five level museum. Done in about an hour. Off my bucket list. read more

Great to Visit I am at a bit of a catch 22 with this - the weather was quite amazing during our visit, so it was hard to stay inside in general. I will try to be as unbiased as possible with this review. The content was amazing - I have seen some works and learned a lot about Van Gogh. we got lucky as the museum was sold out for the next 2 weeks (a first from what an employee was telling me). Book online - I cannot stress this enough! The story of Van Gogh is a sad and triumphant one - I have a new appreciation of the man after this visit. My only critique would be to make sure you pick an otherwise indoor day to visit - there is a Vondelpark near by and almost irresistible in great weather. read more

This was a nice experience, there were some kids being kids running around ruining the atmosphere of interest and respect for the museum, over all though it was a casual mid day experience that didn't cost an arm and a leg (17.00e), and was easy in and out. I came a little to close to closing so was pushed out before I could finish viewing all of the art. Nothing stood out in my mind to entice you to come here other than some original works of art. There was a gift store which was nice, it offers great little trinkets for gifts if you have Van gogh super fans. read more

Even though I'm not really an art person, this museum was amazing. I know of Van Gogh and some of his famous art pieces. This museum will walk you through his life chronologically, so you will get to see some changes and explanations in his creations. While I was there, the Museum has Van Gogh and the colours of the night exhibit, so I was lucky enough to see one of his famous starry night. Perhaps the largest collection of Van Goughs in the world and in this sense it was splendid. It was also noteworthy in that the museum was founded by the artist's nephew. I enjoyed my afternoon here and was guided by the audio tour. It wasn't overly crowded on a Saturday. However it was a shame that the artist's most famous work (Starry Night) is actually sitting in the Moma in New York City. I will still rate it 5 stars and would recommend this to any afficianado of modern art. As you are not permitted to take photos inside the gallery I can only provide a shot from the gift shop. You have to go! I really suggest, when you go to a museum like this, to do the audio tour. I think it was 5 euros per person. And book online before you go for a reservation/time. There are two options for the audio tour. A quick one (20 paintings and 45 minutes though it took us more like an hour and a half) or the longer one (40 paintings and 90 minutes though I imagine it might take a little longer unless you rush). read more

I'm here in Amsterdam and had to check out The Van Gogh Museum! It is a very modern, feel good museum. You can get pretty close to the paintings but you can not take any pictures. A must see in Amsterdam. The Van Gogh Museum is absolutely breathtaking. It does a good job at introducing the life of the painter. I could feel his pain and walked out with a much better understanding of who he was. We did not do the audio tour, which cost an additional fee, but now I wish we did. I saw tons of people walking around with the head phones on staring at awe at certain paintings. I want to know what they learned! Without the self led audio tour it took us about 2 hours to get through the whole museum. It gets crowded in certain areas, but that is the price you pay to see such amazing works. There can be a very long line for tickets. What is funny is my husband and I decided we didn't want to wait in the line so we started to head towards the Rijksmuseum. We saw that the museum store by the Rijksmuseum was selling Van Gogh tickets. We just bought them there and then skipped the whole line! I'm a Canadian expat and live one street from this museum in a country with over 400 museums. The focal point of a singular museum directed to an artist figure such as Van Gogh is in itself interesting. Who was he, how did he live, what happened in his life, was he "mad"... As you stroll you get to drift into the paintings and simplicity of being that man, painting those emotions into form. It's moving and interesting - worth the visit. read more
