If you are a fan of Van Gogh, this is a must. I have loved Van Gogh's art for a long time and the exhibit taught me a lot about this life, inspirations, and work. I walked away with a great appreciation for Van Gogh as an artist. The exhibit is comprehensive and well put together. I think it took about an hour to an hour and a half to get through it all. The store museum also has some nice items. For getting in, yes, there is a line. I recommend getting a reservation OR beating half the wait with the line with the I Amsterdam card. I went on a Thursday afternoon after trying in the morning. In the morning, the line was ridiculously long and didn't move so we went to the Rijksmuseum. After the Rijksmuseum and lunch, we gave this a second attempt and the line was moving more quickly and it wasn't as long. The museum entrance fee is also covered with the I Amsterdam card. read more

Tip...if you stay in a hotel there will likely be vouchers for a few euro off but you must stand in line to buy the ticket from the window so I suggest going early (before 9 am). There is wifi inside and also near the building so if the line is unbearable just connect to free Wi-Fi and buy the tickets online through their website. You will get instant email confirmation and go to the door directly at your scheduled time. No pictures inside although it is possible to snap a pic with your phone inconspicuously since the sender security aren't really hardcore watching. This place was a lot smaller than expected when actually going in because the building itself appears large and bulky from the outside. I do recommend this museum because even if you are not an art person the paintings just have so much detail and history. You can get the quick tour through the audio guides, which is extra 5 euro, and go see all the highlights in less than an hour. 17 euro for adults or extra discount if you get a voucher from your hotel. read more

I loved everything about this museum. A visit to the Van Gogh museum is a unique experience for any individual who has an appreciation for art. It was so interesting to see the variety of art collections inspired by Vincent Van Gogh. While in the Netherlands be sure to see his famous paintings; The works of Sunflowers, The Potato Eaters, The Starry Night over the Rhone, Cafe Terrace and awe my favorite painting "Almond Blossoms". My favorite part about this museum was their event called Jazz and Van Gogh. I had cocktails here with a friend of mine and loved how they collaborated art, jazz and cocktails on Friday nights. I love when a walk through museum tells a story. This was a story of creative life of Vincent Van Gogh, filled with artistic struggles, creative experimentation and, at times, darkness. Although you will not see some of Van Gogh's most popular work here, you will get a very clear picture of his progression as an artist as well as people, events, things that influenced his creations. It's a journey through his process, his learning and his darkness. Although I knew that Van Gogh took his own life, it was interesting to learn that this act was directly related to his struggle to make a difference in the world of art and to break the norms. Unfortunately, he died without knowing what a huge imprint he left behind. This is a must do in Amsterdam! Next to the museum is a beautiful park. The cost is minimal, I suggest you purchase tix online and eliminate having to stand in line at the box office. No cameras or large bags are allowed at the exhibit, so please be respectful of that. Opened in 1973, this museum houses the largest collection of his phenomenal work...paintings, drawings & letters. An array of extraordinary pieces that has inspired a large number of artist. It also includes paintings of his contemporaries Gaugin, Monet & others. It was an amazing experience just being there. Staring at his numerous self portraits, prominent brows, soulful eyes, blank gaze, ... A feeling of sadness overcomes me. How a genius of a man can be so down to take up his own life. Thoroughly enjoyed all his paintings, and had fun reading his letters. I did a lot of research on Van Gogh and found out a lot of things. First the collection originally belonged to his younger brother Theo and when he passed away went to Theo's widow. On her death her son inherited it and eventually transferred to the foundation at the suggestion of the Dutch government. I saw some of his Still Life paintings too at the Musee d' Orsay in Paris, and mostly of the flowers, Carnations, Peonies.and Crysanthemums The very popular Starry Starry Night, Shoes, Cypresses and some drawings are currently housed at our Museum of Modern Arts here in NYC. I have a reproduction of the Starry Starry night in my daughters bedroom. I love the piece so much I bought a scarf , umbrella and coasters with the same design at the Van Gogh Store.. The place was crowded with tourist and art afficionados. Be sure not to be in a rush when you visit the place. Linger & appreciate his work , its all worth your time and the entrance fee.. read more

Ah, the Van Gogh Museum. The whole idea of a museum dedicated to the work of Van Gogh is cruelly ironic. The same man who had committed suicide over the lack of appreciation for his talents, now has a flood of tourists from all around the globe to admire his art. In a way, it makes his story more interesting, albeit tragic. For 18 euros, visitors will enjoy the story of Van Gogh, as narrated by the museum. Van Gogh's story begins on the bottom floor, and it progresses until the guest reaches the top floor. There are a lot of text provided to help the guest understand how Van Gogh changed as an artist and as a person, but many of his paintings already reflect his growth and change in perspective. There is a lot to learn about this renowned artist. Many would be surprised to learn that Van Gogh was actually very technical and pragmatic with his work, as opposed to the common misconception that his paintings were guided by surges of emotion. Aside from many of his art (excluding The Starry Night and Cafe Terrace at Night), guests are also treated to works by other artists who had inspired Van Gogh. There is one painting by Claude Monet, and it was astonishing to see how the closely the painting resembled those of Gogh's. And there is a hallway in the museum that is solely dedicated to Van Gogh's correspondence with his family and friends. Through reading his letters, one can begin to understand the artist's fervent passion, but also catch a glimpse of his inner demons. The Van Gogh Museum tells a captivating story, but it was one that ended in tragedy. Through reflecting on the story, I cannot help but to wonder about the modern artists that we are neglecting today. Why is it that we pay admission to sit inside MOMAs but walk briskly by the local street painters? Why is it that we tune into commercially successful music that top charts instead of discovering musicians who have truly started from the bottom? I bet we can find the modern Van Goghs out there today. Maybe we just have to look at a street painting with a renewed perspective. Or maybe listen more carefully to the lyrics of a poet. Van Gogh taught us that commercial success does not define artistic talent. I would rather show appreciation to these unsung artists while they are here than to line up around their museum after they have passed. read more

There are quite a few museums in the museum district of Amsterdam, but this one is a must to visit. We arrived after a bit of a walk from our hotel to a very long line to purchase tickets. I think the wait time was estimated to be about an hour long. Ugh. As a person that has a familiarity with queuing theory as well as a bias toward spending money versus time I honestly didn't have the patience for it. The good news is the museum website, https://www.vangoghmuseum.nl/en, allows you to purchase your ticket online ahead of time to avoid waiting and you can also use PayPal. Once inside we decided to go from the top down, it wasn't chronological or conventional, but it made sense since you would need to go back to the bottom floor to exit the building and it was also how we toured the Rijks Museum. All in all a really nice way to spend about an hour. We didn't read everything or spend too long staring or studying each brush stroke, we hit the highlights, read enough to feel like we learned some things and appreciated the work of an incredibly tortured and talented painter. read more

The art here was kind of fantastic. But the museum was was odd. I mean they had it set up where everyone walking around from piece to piece in this weird process type line. It felt like being on some sort of weird procession. Also a lot of people were listening to things, nobody really seemed to speak, the lights had this weird dimness. As a whole i fel thte hole experience to be very disconcerting. I mean, I loved being able to get up close to the Van Gogh pieces and see the texture on the art, but I felt the whole experience to be kinda meh compared to the other places I went on that trip. read more

The Van Gogh Museum is one of my favorite museums. The museum is spacious and modern with a well-designed layout and a laid-back cafe that just invites you to stay, relax, and enjoy the art. The second time I visited there was even a live pianist adding to the ambiance. The museum is arranged chronologically on four floors so you start with van Gogh's earliest works and climb up, essentially, through time. The permanent collection contains many of van Gogh's major works (excluding Starry Night) including self portraits, still lifes, and landscapes spanning through the major periods of his life and work. The museum also contains a nice collection of other 19th century artists including Monet, Gauguin, and Bernard. His Self Portrait with a Felt Hat, Almond Blossom, Butterflies and Poppies, The Yellow House, Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette, and Irises are works you will probably recognize, but it's the lesser-known paintings and the collection of his drawings that give you a much broader view of van Gogh. The Van Gogh Museum is located on the Museumplein, so while you're in the neighborhood stop by the Rijksmuseum or at least take some photos with the I Amsterdam letters. read more

4 floors of Van Gogh, detailing his entire life; you are able to see how different moments in his life heavily influenced his art. I must say he loved himself, haha; having studied him very little in school we are all familiar with his story and of course with his most famous self portrait as well as other famous paintings. Keep in mind the STARRY NIGHT is I believe at the MOMA and not at this museum; my wife and I were on a hunt until we asked an employee. The place is huge and lots to see; we walked every floor saw every painting but having been in Paris visiting the Louvre a couple of days before kept us from spending too much time here, not to mention we were only in town for 2 days. read more

The crowd never bothered me, as I was completely and utterly transfixed by the radiant collection that laid before me. Despite it being my 6th or 7th trip to Amsterdam this past October, I just now made it to the Van Gogh museum. It was an exceptional experience, and a definite must-see for anyone lucky enough to visit. This museum is home to the largest collection of paintings and drawings by Van Gogh. His paintings are constantly in rotation in an effort to preserve his work, so you may not be able to see all your favorites. I learned a great deal about Van Gogh during my visit, far more than the simple story that he was a crazy painter who chopped off his ear. His struggle to be accepted as an artist is something that I think most people will find inspiring. The paintings in here are also not exclusively Van Gogh - the museum also includes work by some of Van Gogh's contemporaries including Monet. The gift shop here is great as well, offering reasonably priced replicates for your home of his most famous work. I picked up one of 'Cafe Terrace at Night' - my little piece of Van Gogh and Amsterdam nestled in my living room. read more

I'm not really much of an art fan as Julia D would testify but I really enjoyed the Van Gogh museum. I had been outside his house in Paris and seen some of his paintings around the world but really enjoyed the large selection of his work on display. We were able to see everything within an hour even though the the museum was really crowded. My favourite works were the self portraits or selfies as I insisted on calling them. There are so many good museums in Amsterdam but I would recommend seeing this one. read more

How can you not love the Van Gogh Museum? The paintings are beautiful, the organization is interesting, and it's great to learn about his evolution as an artist and about his life. We did wonder if the museum--since it was created by his family--paints a rosier picture of his life than true. Still, loved all the factoids, and the gallery looking at how he has inspired other artists. My gripes: The no photo rule is crazy (always seems like a ploy to charge money for postcards; otherwise you'd just forbid flash photography), and no one pays attention anyway. The audio guide, while great, is a fee on top of the fee to enter the museum. Fun tip: There's a grocery store a stone's throw from the museum. You can grab a snack there for a few bucks, then enjoy the museum :). read more

Worth a visit if you are a Van Gogh fan. I was expecting more though and the place was way to crowded to enjoy some of the more famous works despite my getting there right when they opened. Advice-go right when they open. Try to go off season too. I was more happy with the Van Gogh visiting exhibit I saw at the MOMA a few years ago. I didn't have a lot of time in Amsterdam, so I opted to come here instead of the Rijks or Stedelijk because I'm a fan of more modern art and Van Gogh has always interested me. The museum isn't very large (4 floors) and only two floors are dedicated to Van Gogh's work but I still really enjoyed my visit. The collection is grouped into logical installations where you can see how his style changed over time. There are also some really cool installations that show cross sections of how the paint was applied and other specific details about his work aesthetic. The museum has a strict no photo policy so don't think you can sneak a photo in here or there because their staff will notice, ask you for your camera or phone and delete the photos from them. (I saw this happen more than once!) They do have a wall where they have painted a replica of the famous "Sunflowers" painting so you can take your selfies. After your visit, be sure to spend some time in the gift shop. They have a really diverse collection of items to take back with you. Also, they will ship items to you - I bought an awesome absinthe set on sale for only 7 euros (originally 30 euros) and paid 20 euros to send it home. It arrived a few weeks later in perfect condition. Despite the no photo bummer, I did really enjoy my visit here and really felt that I walked away with a lot of knowledge and a deeper appreciation of Van Gogh. Pro-tips: buy your tickets on-line before you head to the museum. You can also buy tickets at the shop near the I Amsterdam sign, but they will most likely be for a couple of hours later. That's totally okay since you can walk around and/or drink beer at the cafe nearby. read more

Hours wandering around Vincent's eclectic collection. Weird that he only sold one painting while he was alive. This place is BIG so wear good walking shoes. No photos allowed. Too bad they don't have his earlobe on display. What can I say? The man had talent, and not just talent in one or two areas. He was diversely talented in drawings, sketches, prints, watercolors, portraits, paintings of landscapes and then some....and you can find many of them here. My favorite were the detailed sketches and drawings, and how one can view their progression into a painting. I feel as if his oil paintings often overshadow his awesome sketches. read more

Disappointment set in for me after I spent almost two hours whimsically gazing at so many of van Gogh's -one of the world's most famous painters- works of art, when I realized that some of his most famous works weren't even a part of the collection at an art museum named the "Van Gogh Museum". That's right... those artworks being "Starry Nights", the painting with the droopy sunflowers and the self-portrait where he's wearing the goofy, yellow straw hat, are scattered throughout the world to New York City, Munich and Paris, respectively. However, it was still quite an interesting experience to visit this museum, and if you ever find yourself in Amsterdam, try to take some time away from the pot brownies and brothels and take a stroll through this museum. You still get to see some of his most acclaimed work, such as "The Potato Eaters" and that painting of the skeleton smoking cigarettes. I know, I know... It's hard to get excited about visiting a museum dedicated to a mad man whom suffered extensively from gonorrhea, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and even lopped off his own ear to give to a hooker (allegedly), especially when you can't see "Starry Nights". But take my word for it when I say that you will have no regrets (which I can only imagine was van Gogh's life motto). read more

WOW My first time in Amsterdam and this museum was on our list of places to see. The work of this megalomaniac are a must see and are truly things to be appreciated. We took the audio tour (first time we have done this in any museum) for 5 Euros and let me tell you it was probably the best museum experience I have ever had. Which leads me to think I will be getting the audio tour going forward at every museum. I did not understand how much learning the history of the paintings matter. So if you aren't on a tour with a real guide, at least pick up the audio tapes. The museum was under construction when we went, not sure if they are adding more exhibits and all. Took us about an hour and half from start to finish and we really got to enjoy everything there. The museum is located right next to Vondelpark, so grab a sandwich or a bite to eat from the cute eateries next to the museum and spend the rest of the day lounging on the grass! read more

Mobs of people trying to look at timeless art. Disclaimer - This is a review of the museum, not Van Gogh: We went on a Monday in mid October, and the whole place was totally slammed. It was like going a state fair or a Black Friday sale. There was a mob of at least a dozen people at packed right in front of every painting just trying to catch a peak, getting frustrated and then hurrying on to try and get a look at the next one only to find the same overcrowding at the next painting. It's cool to go there to get a tshirt, and tell your friends that you've been, but don't expect to be able to enjoy the artwork. Complaint: Because we had a sleeping baby in a carrier we were ushered to the front of the line to enter the museum. After we got through ALL the security and went into the first gallery one of the workers stopped my wife and told her she couldn't carry the baby on her back, because backpacks weren't allowed. He couldn't be reasoned with and was a real jerk about it and MADE us take the baby out(waking the baby up) and move the carrier to the front. The way we were treated by that individual really marred our whole experience. As much as I enjoyed trying to Van Gogh's work, I would NOT recommend it. read more

They do an amazing job telling the comprehensive history of Van Gogh and his works they make sure to include other artists' work who were involved in his life. Really such a special museum - dedicated to Van Gogh. You learn about his life and his art - so my visit felt like an art history lesson. I rented an audio guide, which was well worth it! I was especially entranced by The Potato Eaters - especially after learning about how the painting had been stolen (for all of 35 minutes) and then found in a car in a parking lot! Museum guards were involved! Gasp! Bedroom in Arles is just unbelievable, and probably my favorite - along with the Almond Blossoms series. I frequent the Met and MOMA in NY, and it was great to see so much more Van Gogh here! I'd seen his Sunflowers at the Met and in Philly and London, but the painting here left me speechless. Enjoy! Sometimes it can get tiresome of just viewing artwork, so really liked how they had things that showed you the history of Van Gogh's life and family members. This is a must-do in Amsterdam! Plan for it, make reservations. You walk through the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh. You would do yourself a favor to be more than a passing tourist. On my way to Amsterdam, I studied a bit of Van Gogh, watched the film "Vincent and Theo", and even watched an episode of Nova (I think) about the woman who studied whether, or not, Van Gogh cut off his ear, and why, or why not. It was a really really good documentary. When you get to the museum you will be more enveloped by the art, and by the man. I went to Van Gogh museum during Fashion Week evening. On Friday's museum is presenting sound and image installations. It is really cool to walk around and admire Van Gogh's paintings and see some more modern representations of some of them. Museum is really nice whether you are into Van Gogh's paintings or not. After a moment you can quickly discover that there is more to Van Gogh than "Sunflowers"...While walking through the exhibition you can read different shorts stories from artist's life and his inspiration for paintings. So confused about the high reviews of the Van Gogh Museum. This is a good collection of Van Gogh's art, but the curation is simply terrible. I was excited to see the Van Gogh Museum since Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists during my graduate art history studies. Van Gogh is known for his impasto style... the thick and expressive layering of paint. Each brushstroke shows Van Gogh's emotion and evolution of his works. The thick layering of paint also contributes to Vincent's requests to brother Theo for more paint. Unfortunately, all of Van Gogh's paintings at this museum is behind glass, and Van Gogh's emotion through his impasto style is sadly lost. In addition, the lights above the paintings glared on the glass, and there is no way to fully enjoy the masterpieces. The Van Gogh Museum displayed Vincent's sketches in areas that are so dark that the works are not enjoyable. The museum claim that the sketches are delicate to light and must be displayed in dimly lit areas. There is nothing more delicate than Degas' pastels, which are beautifully displayed and allow the visitors to enjoy at the D'Orsay in Paris. It is sad to say that the Kimball and SMU Meadows Museums in Dallas Fort Worth have shown Van Gogh collections that well surpassed the curation of this Van Gogh Museum collection. Photographs are not allowed, so those who continue to take unauthorized photographs may have contributed to the curation; otherwise, I would recommend that the Van Gogh curator revisit the display of the collection. This collection seems to be more focused on the archival of Van Gogh's works than allowing the visitors to fully enjoy and feel his works. Disappointing collection for €19 admission fee. read more

Sadly, he only sold one painting when he was alive. An amazing museum. Nearly every Van Gogh on display had me floored. The colors, stroke work and composition are all stunning; signs of a genius mind and yet also of a troubled soul. The museum itself is well-designed, but it's also packed with tourists. I don't think it matters what time (or day) you go; it's gonna be busy. But it's worth it. You'll never get such an intimate glimpse into Van Gogh's life. Bonus points for anyone who's seen the Doctor Who episode w/ Van Gogh. It might seem a bit silly, but I swear I felt closer to the artist and his works because of it. read more

This museum is really well presented and laid out. Van Gogh really was a fascinating artist, and as he was living his life it's almost like he set himself up for having his life's work displayed in a museum - all of his letters to his brother tell his life's story so clearly that it's almost too perfect. Unfortunately, as others have mentioned, his most famous painting (Starry Night) isn't currently housed here. What struck me as odd though was that the painting isn't even acknowledged / mentioned anywhere in the museum as far as I could tell, not even in the video they display downstairs about his life's work. I am a fan of Van Gogh's work and have seen them via the traveling show they had in Denver, at the Hermitage as this museum was being renovated and finally here after the renovation. All three were unique experiences, but there is something great about seeing Van Gogh in Amsterdam in a museum designed and renovated to house a permanent Van Gogh exhibit. A thoroughly enjoyable museum where you can take your time and explore all of the works and see Van Gogh's progression. Also view other artists that influenced/inspired Van Gogh or vice versa. The museum is more that just a place to view the art. It hosts changing programs, lectures, workshops and other activities. On Friday's the museum is open until 10:00 pm with entertainment (DJ, VJ, other musicians). There is a "grand event" on the first Friday of the month as well. Check out their website for more information on all the offerings. Definitely worth a visit! And, although I have not been yet, there is a cafe where you can take a break and enjoy a snack or coffee. The museum is one I will return to over and over to enjoy during my extended stay in Amsterdam. read more

Loved this place!! This museum had an audio tour as well as many descriptions and stories on the walls to accompany the art and to tell you more about the artist and his life. Be sure to buy a ticket in advance! We got the first tickets for 9am, arrived on time and by then it was already getting PACKED! We were there for about 3-4 hours total, and the line outside was just getting longer and longer as we left. read more

This place was incredible. My friend and I spent hours in here and we were entertained the whole time. Even if you aren't a fanatic, i feel like this place can make you appreciate art. This place outlines Van gogh's whole life from the very beginning, and it's cool to see how his art has transformed over time. There are even interactables throughout the museum such as recordings of letters Van gogh has exchanged with his family. Unfortunately, Starry Night isn't in this museum, but there is plenty of good art here. Compared to other museums that have audio tours, the extra audio that you pay for is well worth it. Buy tickets online, with an entry time reservation! Otherwise you will be ON line for a long time. You can also, apparently, get in immediately with a "museum card" (which apparently is a good deal, also -- gets you into multiple places). The reserved-time entry line opens a half hour early -- so, for a 3:00pm reservation be there at 2:30 and you'll wait about 5 min total to get in. Yes, they make you check your backpacks (and go through a metal detector). That's because this place gets damned crowded. They should let you just download 4 MP images of all the paintings, and tell people not to bother photographing them, it would make life a hell of a lot easier. We went on a Friday afternoon, which turned into evening, and they set up a bar and have music and a VJ show on the walls to attract young people. (Disco at the Van Gogh?)
