A trip to this museum was a part of my study abroad program, so I'm not sure how much the tickets were and how far in advanced you should get them. Overall, I really enjoyed the museum. It presented a great and condensed story of Van Gogh's life - and this is coming from someone who knew very little about him beforehand. It's a definite must-see if you're in Amsterdam. read more

This museum is free with a Iamsterdam card which was surprising but we took advantage of it. The card is highly recommended as it enabled us to breeze right in skipping the long line. As a fan of Van Gogh's work this was another must for me. Yes, a few of his famous pieces aren't on display here in Amsterdam but quite a few of them are and it was a treat to be able to view them in person. No photos are allowed however there were many who chose to ignore this rule. Perhaps it's in their mindset these paintings are famous and there already are a million copies of the prints out there, so why not. The museum itself is actually not that big so two hours I think is sufficient time. You will also need your patience. It gets quite crowded. read more

This is a must do when in Amsterdam. Word to the wise, do one of two things: 1) pre-order your timed tickets online to avoid the mid-day chaos or 2) get here between 8-8:30 in the morning and stand in the "need ticket" line. Museum opens at 9. The art work and variety of Van Gogh paintings are well worth the visit. I found the layout to be perfect, starting from his earliest works and then moving on to his final painting before his self-inflicted gunshot wound of a death. There are also works of artists who associated with Van Gogh on display, well worth the look. Keep in mind that this is a top attraction so it's very busy. I went on a Sunday morning at 9 and it was packed. The crowded feeling definitely takes away from the joy of studying Van Gogh's works. Also, the audio guide is top notch and worth the extra Euros. read more

I am not a fan of van Gogh's work, but this was an expertly curated museum. It is organized chronologically, starting on the bottom floor with work that inspired van Gogh, and ending with his last works and a special exhibit that changes from time to to time. When I was there, it was a showcase of Asian art because apparently van Gogh was a fan. What really got me though was just how crowded it was. It was hard to really look at each painting and think about it when you were worried about hogging the space in front (if you could even get that close). It seemed overrated to me, and unless you are an avid van Gogh appreciator, I think you could skip it and find some other museum where you would have a better time. read more

Staying out in Haarlem, my then-fiance and myself trekked over to Amsterdam to explore the city for a bit. Quite honestly, Amsterdam reminded me of San Francisco, in that it was rather dirty, bums were abound and nothing like people shooting up. Anyways, our main reason for coming to the city was to go to the museum of a famous artist. Growing up and watching Rick Steves and his adventures throughout Europe and Amsterdam, I always wanted to see this museum and actual artwork of Van Gogh beyond the ones I've seen in various museums through SoCal and instead, all under one roof. The museum gives the chronological timeline of the artist from birth to his demise. Seems like Van Gogh was a typical artistic person: talented paired with darkness/cynicism. Most of the artwork here are not the most famous ones Van Gogh is known for, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I suggest if you ever come across Amsterdam in your travels to check out the museum. It is well worth the 2-3 hours you will end up wandering in. read more

This museum is a must-see in amsterdam - but also a must is pre-buying tickets. even better if you can buy timed tickets. we went at 7p.m on a friday night (it's open till 10 on fridays) hoping it would be quiet, but even having bought tickets we still had to wait half an hour (timed tickets can walk straight in), and the people who hadn't bought tickets had to wait even longer. it was amazing to see the short painting life of obviously such a tortured man, but it was beautifully told through the sequence of his paintings, and letters, which were a really nice touch in understanding the life of this man. without a doubt, the pictures are breathtaking - and seeing some of the more famous works in real life (sunflowers/bedroom) are magnificent they also have a microscope to look at some of the finer detail in his work - really incredible also the gift shop is full of treasures for souvenirs! ;) read more

17 and younger is free with a paid adult (but I'm not sure how many children can get in free). There are several levels and there is a head set tour that you can take. Might cost extra? I just walked around and read the notes. Your not allowed to take pictures. There's 2 stores... 1st one on level 1 and a smaller one on 3 level. Small eatery and coffee shop. But there's also some food places outside of the museum just walk 3 minutes. This museum is nice but I thought small. read more

Well-organized flow of traffic through a chronological progression; great for people who want to check out some art, and great for people who know a bit about the different periods/genres and want to see how the artists changed stylistically, too. Outside of the line (buy tickets online and skip it!) there was a coat check, cute shop (of course), and prices weren't bad (14e for an adult). I also loved that they had a Picasso in Paris exposition in their rotating gallery! :) read more

As an artist myself, i was truly impressed with this Museum. Van Gogh was one of the most amazing artists that ever lived (In my opinion) and it definitely shows in his work. You also get the Great works of other interesting, lesser & more well known artists as well. The only drawback of our visit here was the Main painting of Van Gogh's that I wanted to see (Starry Night) was actually in New York at the time. I'm not sure if it is still, but i was a little dissapointed in that. All in all, a GREAT museum. I would actually go back again, if ever in the Netherlands again, and hopefully my Favorite piece will be there this time read more

If there is one piece of advice to visit this museum, it is to make a BOOKING ONLINE BEFORE! We did that and it was great to be able to walk in and not wait in the massive line that just stretched around the block. The museum is over a massive 3 levels and took us the whole day to see everything in depth, so try to also get in a booking for the morning. There are not a lot of places to sit either, so pace yourself and take frequent breaks. Also one other tip - if anything catches your eye at the store, buy it! Don't think you can buy it at the store in front of the Rijksmuseum :( Otherwise, it's a great museum and great mix of the personal and art of Van Gogh! read more

There's already a lot of reviews here so I'll reiterate that this is among the most concentrated locations for Van Gogh's work and is worth a visit if you like his paintings at all. Main thing to know: buy your ticket in advance during the summer! We did this and felt like the beautiful woman at the nightclub when we waltzed passed a miserable long mass of people in various queues and went straight in. Why this is not five stars: crowds were bad when we went on a summer day. Not the museum's fault but I recommend going early in the day if at all possible to have the best experience. read more

A good museum of Van Gogh's paintings and other art work from his career. No photos allowed which is not a good thing but still a good experience to checkout while in Amsterdam. Not as cozy like it was when I visited the museum in the 1990's. They also have paintings by Monet in here. Price is a little to high but then get an Amsterdam card. read more

Reserve your tickets ahead of time online..you'll save yourself the headache of waiting in one of the longest museum line I've probably ever witnessed. The Museum is very interesting, and has a lot of beautiful artwork from Vincent Van Gogh and some of his contemporaries, inspirations, and the people whom he later inspired. They also do a good job of telling his story via letters and timelines. I'm glad I bought tickets online (very little waiting), I'm glad I went, and it really increased my appreciation for him. However, this was the most crowded museum I've ever been to, and it really detracted from the experience. Most people get the audioguides, meaning that around each painting with audio information, people are clustered around, listening to their devices. For many of them, I was not able to get close enough to see the texture of the painting (and that level of detail is important to me in his work), because there were such large crowds. I went to two large Paris museums on this trip, and although they were exceptionally crowded and popular, they had much better crowd control. I think the issue with the Van Gogh is they'll let people in as quickly as they can. My online ticket was for a specific window, which should mean that they limit the number of people who can enter per hour, but that didn't seem to be the case. Of course, lots of people going to the museum to learn more about this man and his work is a great thing. But visitors should expect exceptionally large crowds, and should expect to have to push past people holding audioguides if they want to see many of Van Gogh's most impressive works. read more

Best museum in Amsterdam. This museum offers the whole lifespan of Van Gogh's art. Even though he only painted for 10 years, they had the majority of his paintings in this single building. I appreciated how they organized his artwork in a timeline manner. It gave a better perspective of his life. There is a lower level which seems to be a new section dedicated to his painting style and also displaying what materials he used. A really great place to visit and should not be skipped. read more

Let me warn everyone that I am not a huge fan of art museums. I usually steer very clear from them in every major city, but I am a fan of Van Gogh and I wanted to learn about his craziness (and see some of his work). This museum was perfect for what I was looking for. It is very well laid out and chronologically story-tells Van Gogh's life and artistic inspiration until his death. This is the largest collection of Van Gogh's work with his famous Sunflowers painting. FYI: Starry Night is currently housed in the MOMA in NYC. TIP: Buy tickets from the museum ticket booth by the I AMSTERDAM (right by the Rijksmuseum) and the sculptures of painted bunnies. This will save you a lot of waiting time! You can buy timed tickets here and just walk to the blue line at the museum. I waited 5 minutes to get in, my hostel-mates waited 1.5 hours. read more

Beautiful museum. To avoid the long queues you must purchase tickets online. Also, picture taking is limited to two areas. One features an oversized self-portrait of Van Gogh and the other sunflowers. Beware as the guards are extremely vigilant and won't hesitate to call you out if caught sneaking in a few camera clicks. read more

I am inspired once more to be an artist! It was pretty amazing to actually see pieces art work by an artist I like and have studied. Whilst standing and getting lost in the paintings it was hard not to feel a bit of what Van Gogh must have been feeling when painting these magnificent pieces of work. You could even feel a strong atmosphere within the building as people silently studied the work. Big down side was my favourite paintings were not there! Almond Blossom and Starry Night! Plenty of Almond Blossom merchandise to buy though. For the €15 admission you get more then Van Gogh you get a bit of Paul Gauguin, Henri de toulouse-lautrec and Emile Bernard and some others. There is also a section with computers where you can sit read Vincents letters to his brother Theo and other Artist friends. I cam here with a friend while visiting Amsterdam over the Easter holiday. Early saturday morning we arrived to see the museum before going to see other things that day. Unfortunately, we were informed that all the tickets were sold out until 9am monday morning. So, we went for those tickets, and returned monday morning. Also note, entry is free with an IAMsterdam card. We arrived 15 minutes early to massive, unorganised group of people waiting to gain entry. Some with tickets, some without, some with e-tickets, some in group tours... It wasn't until 5 minutes before opening that the staff came out and put up barriers to separate lines or to indicate in which line you should be. We were told to move place about separate times. Eventually, the doors opened, and we were able to come in. If you're overloaded with your jacket and or backpack or anything, they do have a coat check area where you can leave your things so you can walk around without them. They do require that you check backpacks (just as a heads up). We opted not to do the audio guides, because we didn't feel like paying an additional 3 euros after the 15 we already paid for tickets; and honestly, and I'm still happy with that decision. We were able to see his main, famous works of arts, and there were still plenty of descriptions next to the paintings explaining them, his life, their timelines, and various types of methods used. The museum is the perfect size, and we were in and out in just under two hours. I'm glad there wasn't more in there because after the two hours I was about museum'ed out for the morning. They have a lovely little gift shop, but they have a second gift shop in the garden area if you find the one in the museum is too busy. They also have a restaurant/cafe if you choose to dine in the museum as well. I highly recommend going to this museum. It has things for both adults and kids, very informative. I just wish they had been more organised in managing the queues. read more

N.B. Starry Night has been a permanent part of the MoMA's collection in New York City since the 1940s. It is not here! The Van Gogh museum is smaller, multi-level, and focuses on just one artist, which is essentially unheard of in the art world. You are directed through a short, but sweet timeline of Van Gogh and his inspirations leading up to his late works and eventual suicide. It is rich in information and an audio guide will about triple the amount of educational content during your visit. The museum is also a forerunner of art restoration and art research. There is a separate building dedicated to this next door. Pro Tip: I highly recommend getting the timed admission ticket, which lets you come back and enter the museum with no line at a specific time slot you are given. This will save you from wasting queuing up. Given the museum's prime location, there is plenty to explore in the city and main park area during the meantime. read more

Online reservations are necessary. 3 hour wait just to get walk-up tickets which does not include the wait to then enter the museum. Being Americans we just didn't know you really have to order tickets online for almost everything you do in Europe. Would have loved to experience this but it just wasn't on the cards for us as we were unprepared so I can't give them that low of a rating, after all it was our fault. We were only in Amsterdam 3 days of our 10 day trip to Europe in June so waiting that long just wasn't a wise use of time but when we return we will be certain to have scheduled tickets online 5 months ahead of time. read more

Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists and this museum was one of the reasons I wanted to visit Holland. (Another reason: it's the place Van Gogh is from.) The museum holds a wonderful collection of his works and is organized beautifully. (Do NOT expect to see Starry Night...that's at MoMA). We visited on a Friday night and there was a DJ in the lobby along with a cash bar. They also stay open until 10pm on Friday nights, so I recommend it. The museum was not too busy when we arrived at about 8:30. I only wish we could have spent more time there because we hardly got to see any of the sketches on higher floors. (We visited mid-March f.y.i.) If you're a Van Gogh fan, you won't be disappointed. If you're not a Van Gogh fan, you will be after you visit. If you are not "into art," this is one of the more accessible art museums I've visited. The short descriptions of Van Gogh's life in each different period really give a good sense of what Vinny was feeling or what he was trying to accomplish with his art at the time. (If you're into Van Gogh and travelling around Europe, I would also recommend Musee d'Orsay in Paris. A nice collection of some of Vinny's better known works.) read more

While visiting in February, we were very disappointed to find out (after we had paid our 30 Euro entry fee) that half the museum was closed for renovation. Van Gogh's Sunflowers were not even on display. This turned a museum that we were excited to tour, into a huge annoyance. It would have been nice if signs had been posted at the ticket booth to let people know about the closures. read more

Glad we visited this museum today. We both really enjoyed it -- there definitely was many, many Van Gogh paintings that I've never seen before. There is a giftshop and cafe on the ground level -- optional free coatcheck. Museum TSA security checks your purses and bags, and they kindly remind you to not use your camera or drink any beverages. There are 3 levels to the museum - - with the majority of Van Gogh's works on the 1st level (first floor up from the ground level). I enjoyed seeing the famed The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers, Pieta, Almond Blossom, and several others. It was interesting to learn more about Van Gogh's life and see his works parallel his existence. Especially learning about how his paintings varied from each region he spent time in. read more

First, the great. The museum is organized in a chronological way such that you are able to walk through Vincent's life and observe how his life and art changed in relation to his lifestyle and mental state. The works of art on display were phenomenal, each one presented beautifully and most of them with accompanying descriptions and narratives. The gift shop has a lot of very cool merch, but it is typical of museum store pricing. I think timing was not in my favor on my visit to the Van Gogh Museum. Several of the most famous pieces were not on display and a couple of the annexes were not open for various reasons. Combine that with it being a Sunday afternoon when I went and the place was absolutely packed to the brim with an average of 10-12 people looking at each piece at any given time. I'll certainly come back the next time I'm in the 'dam, but hopefully will be able to see more of the fine pieces. read more

It was a very organized museum with the largest collection of Van Gogh's work, as well as of his contemporaries. It's a four floor museum that is organized pretty well, with moving from his earlier stuff to his later period, along with documents and drawings from his during his life. When we came here, we were able to purchase a ticket that also included admission the Rijksmuseum and was valid for a couple of months (and was cheaper than the buildings separate) - not sure if this is the case still, but would be a good option if you wanted to visit both museums. read more

Yes! Had a wonderful experience here. Took the suggestion of some of the other reviewers on here and bought my timed ticket online. The lines are divided up and we were ushered in about 15 minutes after arriving. I highly recommend grabbing the info pamphlets that discuss the rotating exhibits. Sprinkled around where works of art that others artist made based on letters Van Gogh sent to his brother. without the pamphlet I would have not understood what the pieces were about. I also loved that they featured works by people who mentored him while he was studying his craft. I walked in a passive appreciatetor of his work and I left an informed fan. Certainly a nice museum to see, but it might do you good to do a little bit of research to know what van Gogh pieces are (and are not) in this museum. I made this mistake and found myself unnecessarily disappointed by not being able to see the pieces I wanted to. At 14 Euros, the admission price is pretty steep, especially given that the museum is really not that big (particularly in comparison to the nearby Rijksmuseum, which has the same admission charge -- or none at all if you are under 18). Still, I found the museum to be a pleasant way to spend 2-3 hours. A piece of advice: Buy your ticket from one of the "Tours and Tickets" offices spread throughout Amsterdam. I'm definitely not the kind of person who usually utilizes tourist-specific offices, but they offered a "no wait" ticket into the Van Gogh Museum at the same price as if you were to buy a ticket at the museum, and it sure felt good to skip by the 40 people in line. read more

Certainly one of the busiest museums/tourist attractions in Amsterdam, but worth the wait in line. The Van Gogh collection is full of Vincent's best, and is always supported by appropriate and interesting exhibitions. The gift shop is HUGE! My most recent visit was for a Yelp evening get-together. We popped in to the museum to enjoy the Friday night live music in the lobby and it was very cool, very fun and something I would highly recommend. read more

If you live in or ever visit Amsterdam you really should take the time out to go here. I think it's 9 euro admission if I remember correctly. No student discount. Children under 17 go free with valid ID. It's a very spacious museum, with 3 floors, all very high security, you can't go in with big rucksack on your back and any small bags you do have are screened or else you leave them in the cloakroom. Wow what a body of work Vincent Van Gogh had, such a pity, like many others, his true genius was not recognized while he was still alive. Beside every painting of his on display there are details of when it was painted and a short bio on the story behind it. There are other artists work on display in this museum too, paintings from artists that were mentors to Van Gogh and who he drew inspiration from. The museum is near the famous "I amsterdam" monument, so you shouldn't have any problem finding it :) I'm not usually one for museums in general, but you really don't have to be into art to be blown away by this, the paintings would move just about anybody. For he who appreciates time, love, pain and suffering, this is a must see. read more
