This museum is one of the best museums we visited in Amsterdam. It is spacious and boasts unerring lighting. Walkman audio is extremely articulate about all highlighted pieces. Very easy to follow and use. The display is well organized. The souvenir store offers various cool and practical items, from waffle in well-made beautiful tin containers to beautiful leather bags, which all have Van Gogh's painting on. They make wonderful gifts. We all feel like experts in Van Gogh 's masterpieces after the visit. Lol. Highly recommend it. read more

Museum dedicated to the aforementioned artist. Came here and bought tickets in advance online. I'd highly recommend buying in advance because tickets were sold out even at 9am, at opening. We took the tram here and waited outside a bit before going in. They have free lockers to place your belongings as you're not allowed to have backpacks while walking through the exhibits. It was nice to get an in-depth look into the inspirations behind the art, and life of Van Gogh. There's free floors and there was another exhibit that focused on another artist that paralleled Van Gogh. We spent two and a half hours there, and I think that was a good amount of time to view everything. I'd highly recommend coming here if you like art and/or it's your first time in Amsterdam. read more

Museums are not on the top of my list when I visit places, but Van Gogh Museum is an exception. There is a main building and an exhibition wing. We bought tickets in advance and also got the audio guide headset to make the most of our time here. The headset made me slow down and take my time. I wanted to listen to what it said about each of the featured paintings. But by the time I got to the exhibition wing, I was over it. I'm not going to lie, one of the reasons why I was excited to come was for the Pokémon exhibit of six paintings. I used to watch the show when I was younger. There is special merchandise at the museum shop. While there, you can also participate in a Pokémon Adventure activity and get a Pikachu postcard. Before it was a Pokémon card, so I do feel gypped. This was an incredible experience. You're given a 30-minute entry window based on your scheduled time, and while the museum gets busy, the timed bookings keep it from feeling overcrowded. There's a convenient area to store purses or jackets if needed. The museum spans four floors, covering the history of Van Gogh's paintings, his personal life, mental health struggles, and eventual death. The brief summaries on the walls do a great job of explaining the different phases of his work. Guided tours are also available, and the entire space is impeccably clean. While it typically takes about two hours to go through, I finished in about an hour but could have easily spent more time there. It's a beautiful museum with fascinating history, a reasonable entry price, and absolutely worth a visit. read more

You can pick a complete tour or highlight tour on the audioguide, it has to do with your interest and time available. Great modern building, BEAUTIFUL art, not just Van Gogh. I didn't realize I was a Van Gogh fan until I saw some of my favourite paintings all in one place. This truly was a wonderful experience. The Van Gogh Museum is a beautiful collection of art pieces from Van Gogh himself and other artists that crossed his path. It's also a thorough recollection of his life story and has one of my favourite gift shops ever. The museum isn't very large but it is very comprehensive given that its focus is on one single person. You can easily get through it in an hour, but you can spend 2-3 here if you take your time. There is lots to look at and lots to learn. During our visit, there was a very popular Pokemon x Van Gogh exhibit that was going on. It was super cute and very popular with kids and adults alike. The temporary exhibition in Oct 2023 was displaying art from different artists that were in France at the same time as Van Gogh and painted similar subjects as him. Make sure you purchase your tickets ahead of time. The museum is super popular and tickets are sold out weeks ahead of time. If you cannot find tickets on the official website, try a reliable 3rd party tour site. We got ours off Tours and Tickets and got in without issue. Don't forget to check out the gift shops which have tons of souvenirs displaying multiple popular paintings. Truly some of the most aesthetically pleasing souvenirs I've ever seen. read more

We've seen the touring Van Gogh show in the US which is just a big audio-visual version of his paintings & his life so it was great to see the real deal in person. We bought tickets on-line a month in advance and opted for an early time slot. Good thing we did because as is typical the whole day was sold out when we arrived. The line moved quickly though the line for the audio headsets was a bit slow. The museum and galleries are nicely laid out and the accompanying explanations are helpful. We opted to follow the highlight tour on the audio program while looking at all of the paintings. In front of the big hits it got a bit crowded but not too bad. The museum is a good size, not too big though we were a bit surprised that some of his most famous paintings are not here. After we thought about it some more it made sense that many are in other famous museums around the world. When in Amsterdam this is a must see. read more

If you're a fan of Van Gogh, or art or museums in general - I definitely recommend a stop here if you're in Amsterdam. The museum does a great job of showcasing a huge amount of Van Gogh's art, as well as expertly presenting his background and history, including his untimely death. You can see many well known Van Gogh works, such as The Potato Eaters, Sunflowers, Almond Blossom, The Bedroom, and many of his very recognizable self portraits. There are also many more paintings, as well as sketches, drawings, and even some of Van Gogh's personal letters, giving a little insight into his inspirations, demons, and psyche. For the cost (€20), this is a huge collection that you can peruse for hours. And for anyone under 18, you can actually get in free. We visited the Rijksmusem also, which features many other artists and has a few Van Gogh pieces, (and is a little more expensive), but if you're interested in seeing more/learning more particularly about Van Gogh, I definitely recommend adding this stop to your itinerary! read more

The Van Gogh Museum is a testimony to Vincent Van Gogh's family, particularly that of his brother Theo and his daughter. After his tragic life ending suicide, Theo worked tirelessly to organize and catalog his brother's paintings. The last two years of Vincent's life were a world wind of productivity and bitter sweet. Most remember his argument with Paul Gauguin, on who was the most serious artist between the two, which ended with Van Gogh cutting off his own ear. But in those remaining two years, Van Gogh produced some his best, awe inspiring work. This Museum, along with the nearby Rijks and Musée d'Orsay in Paris, house his best works. From his Yellow Room and Almond Tree, to the portraits of the local town folk in sleepy French city of Arles or of himself, to his spiritual masterwork Starry Night. The van Gogh Museum is an absolute must do while in Amsterdam. My family and I really enjoyed our visit. We bought tickets about a month in advance and you definitely need to buy tickets in advance. You can go to the website and pick your day and time. For US residence make sure when you're picking your day and time that you note that their calendar starts on Mondays, not Sundays as you may end up picking the wrong day of the week. We picked an early morning start at 9:15 AM. I'm glad we did as the museum just seem to get more crowded as the day went on. We were at the museum for almost exactly 2 hours. We did not see the special exhibition that they had going on because we were traveling with a six-year-old. I was pretty happy that he did as well as he did for two hours in an art museum. His favorite painting was the sunflowers and they had an area in the gift shop where he could color sunflowers that he really enjoyed. As a history person I really enjoyed the flow of the museum and how it showed the progression of van Gogh's artwork through his life and the different influences on him through different portions of his life. You start with a timeline and series of self portraits. As you move up through the museum, you see his early works as a peasant painter. They especially had the cool painting of a boot, and there was one before he went to Paris, and after he went to Paris, and you could see how his style of painting changed. That was really fascinating to me. You then go on to see his paintings that he did in Paris and the influence other artists in Paris had on him. Then he moved to his time in Arle, then the last part of his life where he struggled with his mental health. It was a beautiful museum and very poignant. It was cool to learn that his nephew worked so hard to make this museum happen. I highly recommend it read more

A small and manageable museum centered on the brief and tragic career of Van Gogh showcasing many of his more famous works. Located near the center of the museum complex this museum displays work on 4 floors. Timed entry tickets are required and should be bought in advance as it regularly sells out. We had 3 pm tickets but were able to get entry around 2:45. You only need 1-2 hours to see it all. Note: while there are elevators mostly you are going up and down the stairs between floors. There's a cafe and a bookstore as well. While busy on a bustling Saturday In Amsterdam, it never felt too crowded. Worth a visit for sure. read more

His life and his story is very shocking and sad. on his last 70 days of his life he painted 72 pieces and all masterpieces. A must if in Amsterdam. Make sure that you book your tickets far in advance. Not joking. I love the stairs ascending down into the museum. If you are lucky enough to use a locker, you must use the same kiosk each time in order to open it. We made the mistake of using a different kiosk after being told that my backpack wasn't allowed in the museum, and we couldn't access our locker. One of the staff members helped us out and explained what we did wrong. There is a small café in case you need a snack. The lobby is smaller compared to other places I visited. However they make up for it with two giftshops. I found a couple items to take back as gifts. First floor has toilets, no water fountain for bottles. Let's talk about the museum. It's 4 levels of joy. We finished this much faster than the Rijk. I think it took us 3 hours? There are some classic pieces that we all get to enjoy in person. Van Gogh was a troubled human, with a gift of art. I learned to appreciate him and pity him. read more

This gallery puts the Van Gogh immersive exhibition to shame - there's so many actual paintings by the artist, history to be learned & the various folks leading tours thru the hall are passionate about the artist's work. I heard a guide explaining to a group of children the complexities of a painting, looking for a painting within a painting & a clock, I would have totally missed if I hadn't listened in. Then there was another gentleman explaining a piece, couples in the park & how it may have reflected on Van Gogh's love life. Highly recommended, a guide as well. Go earlier in the day, by the afternoon it starts to get crowded & you may have to wait to get in. If they ever do a wine tasting & lecture of the various paintings count me in! read more

What a great beginning to our time in Amsterdam. We learned so much more than we thought we knew, about Van Gogh. It took a bit longer to visit than we thought it would, as people hover over pictures and those without the head phone experience are not as directional. I love this place!!! I cannot stress enough to buy your tickets in advance. BUY YOUR TICKETS IN ADVANCE BECAUSE THEY WILL SELL OUT !!! I got our tickets like a day or two before we actually visited and they had lots of times available. I think it helped that when we visited it was low tourist season. When you arrive they have workers at the door asking for your ticket confirmation and if you dont have one and tickets are available they have a separate line for the ticket office. It was raining a bit when we visited so you had to wait outside in line even if you had a ticket, they are timed for entrance. Once inside they had lockers to put your heave bags and coats away, free of charge. The staff spoke english and the bathrooms here were clean and signage was very clear where to go. I picked to pay extra to have the audio guide and it was really nice because you can choose from multiple languages and has a strap to go around your neck. It was very crowded that day so be patient. I am glad we left our heavy coats in those lockers because I was sweating with my regular shirt in here, thats how crowded it was. The museum is organized so you start at the top floor where his earlier works are and work your way back down to the basement where you see his last works before passing away. The basement was the main entrance to the museum and thats where the gift shop is located. You will find your typical souvenirs there, they do accept credit cards. Overall I think we spent half the day here and that was me rushing. I love art and Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists, my favorites by him are his sunflowers and the night at the cafe. I would have loved to spend more time here but and I could easily do it but we had other museums and things to do. This museum is a 'you cannot miss' on your trip to the Amsterdam, its is one of the shining jewels of the city. read more

The brush strokes. They're magic! The thicker and wider, the more magic! Van Gogh considered himself a failure... My hope is that Van Gogh knows how much his works are celebrated, respected and appreciated. Many of these impressionist artists didn't live to see their significant success and impact on the world. He took his life at 37 years old due to multiple bouts with mental health! I know a lot about Van Gogh but here is what I learned on this visit. 1. He drew 1100 works. I knew he dabbled in etching/drawing but I had no idea there were 1100 works. 2. He produced 900 paintings in 10 years. I knew he died young but I didn't know the amount of paintings he produced in that time. This is on average...a painting every 30 hours. Math Break - that is 2,000 works in 10 years! 1100 drawings and 900 paintings! So Van Gogh was a machine! 3. Van Gogh painted himself because he couldn't afford models. He also painted over his art works and on the other side of his art works because the canvases were so expensive. 4. Van Gogh's mental health doctor was Dr. Gachet. I didn't know he lived with his doctor for some time and his doctor was also an artist. Greatly enjoyed this visit! Will be back! read more

Really enjoyed this museum. Started with the temporary exhibit and progressed to their permanent collection. Only gave myself one and a half hours to see everything and that wasn't enough time; I had to rush around at the end to see the most important piece, the Sunflowers! I think it's beneficial to know something about Van Gogh's life history before coming; it gives you a perspective on his art and the different time periods he had to go through. Would definitely recommend this museum to anyone interested in his art (and the art of his friends and contemporaries), but might be a better experience if you give yourself a bit more time! read more

We purchased timed tickets months in advance. The museum was sold out today, but we still stood online to get inside. We purchased a headset in advance which we appreciated. The headset did not revolve in numerical order. We put our belongings in a complementary locker and followed the crowds up to & through the exhibition. There were school groups, tour groups and just crowds of people, it took a while to get in front to be able to look at the art. We started with a timeline of van Gogh, and then moved through the galleries. The galleries were very very crowded , noisy, hot and smelly. It was tough to enjoy & appreciate the art when seeing paintings that were 10 people deep. We spent 3 hrs exploring the museum, had a cold iced tea in the coffee shop & made a few purchases from the beautiful gift shop. In the restaurant I ordered a hummus plate & my husband a flatbread, prices were reasonable. This is the most visited museum in the Netherlands. The Potato Eaters, Wheatfield with Crows and, yes, the postcard-perfect Sunflowers series are all among the 200-strong painting collection. But this is more than just a rundown of van Gogh's greatest hits. Drawings & letters dive into the artist's depression (and that ear incident), there's a video installation charting his rise, and works by the first generation of artists to be inspired by him are on view. This museum is situated at the Museumplein complex & consists of 2 buildings, the Rietveld building with four stories and a café. The Kurokawa wing is a new three-story, oval, the connects through a tunnel. The Van Gogh Museum has the largest collection of the Dutch post-Impressionist painter's works anywhere in the world. It is also a major research center, constantly making discoveries about his working process and artistic technique. Researchers learned that the red pigment van Gogh used had faded over time, leaving the paintings more blue than he'd originally intended. Imagine what his "Bedroom" in Arles would have looked like if the walls were purple and not blue; or how his blossoming fruit trees might have been pink, rather than white. We ended at van Gogh's, Almond Blossoms a piece that van Gogh created for the birth of his nephew and namesake. Six months after van Gogh death, his younger brother Theo died. The Museum shared a lot about their relationship and correspondences. Jo, Theo's widow, saved the chest of drawers, where she kept all of their correspondences. Vincent, van Gogh, Jr. was the founder of this museum and dedicated his life to keeping his uncles' works relevant. Two of Vincent's grand nieces live in Amsterdam today. These is a very nice museum and an impressive building. The flow of the exhibition is great, if not a little crowded. Of course everywhere is crowded in Amsterdam so this is no surprise. I am giving it five stars for all of these reasons, but at the risk of sounding blasphemous, I must say that I do not like The works of Vincent van Gogh at all. His style isn't for me. Starry Night being the only exception. This painting of course is not at the van Gogh museum in Amsterdam but I believe it is at the MoMA in New York if I'm not mistaking. The works that I liked the most are actually works from other artists such as Monet. There were a few paintings that were better than others. I think this reflects a lot on his mental decline. Very tragic life indeed. Still it is an educational and cultural experience that should not be missed. read more

Cool museum to check out if you're a fan of Van Gogh! Def buy tickets in advance online cause once they sell out, they sell out and that's it. When I went today (and I'm sure it's like this everyday) it was SOOOO crowded. I really tried to get in and out as quickly as I could. It def affected my experience, but I'm still glad I went. They won't let you bring in big bags or backpacks, but there are lockers available to put your stuff in for free. Gift shop had a good variety of products for souvenirs or gifts. read more

I must report that the information desk lady, sitting next to the audio tour hand out, was particularly obnoxious to me and ruined the experience. She refused to help me open a locker, eyes rolling back in her sockets in disgust at me for being so stupid...and when i asked for her name, she lost it and started barking that its just past 9am and how dare i disrespect her. We loved this museum however in full disclosure we couldn't get ticket so we booked a private tour with Viator. It was expensive but our tour guide was amazing. The guide explained so much of Vincent's early works to late works. How his style evolved, his relationship with his family, especially his brother and sister in law. The museum was very crowded but with the guide it made it more interesting and we have a renewed and greater respect and admiration for the person, Vincent and the artist, Vincent. Without the guide I would give the museum a 3.5 but with the guide give it a 5. read more

This is an attraction dedicated to one of the most notable Dutch figures in history, and I encourage you to visit if you appreciate his art and want to learn more about his life story. There appeared to be two buildings that are labeled the Van Gogh Museum. I was a little confused where to enter at first, but they are actually connected, and the correct entrance will be where you clearly see through the glass where there are escalators and a large walking area below. You will also most likely see a long line, so that's the biggest indicator that you're in the right spot. The second building is where guests can enter from inside to begin their tour and also head to the gift shop and exit the building. Make sure you arrive near your scheduled time, anything too early or too late will have you turned away at the front. Once you are inside, head down the escalators and go to the desk that provides the audio headset that guides you throughout your tour. Frankly though, it was more of an audio accompaniment to relax me amongst the large crowds. The headset should be used by approaching the painting that you want to learn about and pressing the play button to hear its history. However, because there were so many attendees and so little space to truly immerse yourself in Gogh's work, I just played everything back-to-back as I roamed around aimlessly. It did get a little calmer as I walked up the 2nd and 3rd floors, but I felt overwhelmed by the many people and loud noises about. Since this is a family-friendly environment, expect a lot of children/babies as well. I left the attraction overstimulated, regretting visiting on a Sunday afternoon. If I had more time in my vacation, then I would've visited on a weekday instead. The content itself expands upon the knowledge you may already have about the late artist; proving that there was more to his personality that the infamy he obtained from cutting off his ear. If he were alive today, I was genuinely want to befriend him, and that makes me value his artwork even more. The museum does well in chronicling his beginning to his end, and how his work is still admired today. He is an inspirational figure who had a tragic life, but through that I learned to always try and improve myself and the support of your love ones can take you a long way in life. Gogh was beyond his end, but the series of events that developed him into the man we'd pay money to learn from. I'm glad I got to visit the museum. I advise future guests to visit on a weekday (during school hours), if possible, as it can get super crowded that you'll have to miss out on some art. Otherwise, the place was neat and informative, with so many cool souvenirs you could buy, I wish I could've bought them all. I only paid for a magnet and glasses case of my favorite painting that day, "Almond Blossom" because the story behind why Gogh painted it encourages me to love hard and stay strong even in the midst of internal struggle. read more

Van Gogh is the historic artist who had mental health issues and severed part of his own left ear. His brushstrokes are very characteristic of his style and so many of his paintings are recognizable. This museum is definitely worth a visit if you're in Amsterdam. If you're looking for The Starry Night (1889), it is not located at this museum. Currently, The Starry Night is Museum of Modern Art in New York. As always for all museums in Europe, book your tickets early online and go in the morning to avoid crowds. read more

PRO TIP: Book your tickets online! They don't sell tickets at the museum entrance (probably due to Covid - I'm not sure). The current admission price is 19 Euros. We booked our tickets for 9:30am and were able to enter in a few minutes early before our timed entry. The museum was already busy early in the morning and I was quite surprised about that. There wasn't a mask mandate during the time we visited the museum last month. But, there were a few visitors (including myself) wearing a mask. We were here for about three hours exploring the museum. You'll get to see paintings of Van Gogh's early works to the paintings up until his death. I should have gotten the audio guide to listen more about Van Gogh's paintings, but the note cards next to the paintings were still informative. The gift shop was alright and I didn't make any purchase. I thought the magnets that I saw at "Bloemenmarkt" (flower market) were a lot better than the ones in the museum. read more

Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists, and his flagship museum here in Amsterdam did not disappoint. The building is beautiful and spacious. I recommend buying your tickets online in advance in case they sell out so you don't miss out. I was pleased to see how many of Van Gogh's most famous works are here. (Starry Night is at the MoMA in New York.) Crows in Wheatfield (a brooding favorite of mine), Bedroom in Arles, Almond Blossoms, and Sunflowers are here. And The Potato Eaters (which for some reason creeps me out) is here too, among many, many others of his most popular paintings. What also pleased me was to discover his not so famous works that I'd never seen before and found that I loved those paintings too. Avenue of Poplars in Autumn was really striking and gets no love! I rented the audio tour headphones and proceeded with the leisurely tour. It took approximately 3 hours to see everything. I learned a great deal about Van Gogh.
