Definitely a cool museum with a lot of pieces. It has four floors and tons of artwork. You could honestly spend at least a half an hour on each floor. The only downside was that the wait to get in was about an hour and a half. I highly recommend getting tickets beforehand so you dont have to wait in line. Also, the museum was ridiculously crowded. It seems that every single person wants to take a photo of every piece of artwork. Why? I dont get it. The photos already exist on the internet. I never really understood taking picture of artwork. Because of these people, it makes it impossible to actually look at a painting without some bozo shoving his camera in front of you. And when I say camera, most of the time, its a cell phone. Does anyone actually look at this photos when they get back home? UGH. read more

The miserable old security guard who just publicly humiliated me obviously has done nothing decent with his own life which is why he takes his hatred out on unsuspecting victims. I was in the best of moods entering this museum, my eyes sparkling with adoration for the masterpieces of Van Gogh. I'd made my rounds through quite a few rooms, snapping photos here and there as I had just done for a few hours in the Rijksmuseum museum. Suddenly a loud voice jolted me from my studies of artwork, and I spun around to see an elderly man approaching my end of the room introducing himself in a booming voice. Thinking he was speaking to the entire room, I stepped back and pivoted to let him by me. He continued his announcement and spun to block me, which is when I realized with horror that he was addressing me. Only me. With a taunting smile on his smug little face, he SHOUTED that "no photos are allowed in this room." I was bright red as my eyes darted around the room at all the people staring and snickering at what was happening, and shaking now I meekly stammered "I'm sorry...I didn't reali-" as he continued loudly over me "DON'T. DO IT. AGAIN." My mouth fell open in shock at his unnecessarily over-the-top public scolding of someone who obviously was embarrassed and innocently unaware, and I choked out in a whisper "I won't. I didn't mean to" but he had turned and begun to march away completely uninterested in a response and caring only about making damn sure felt like absolute garbage. I had just walked through 3 rooms before this one, taking photos, as I passed MULTIPLE employees. Not one bothered to warn me. Even if there was a sign somewhere that said no photos and I accidentally overlooked it, even if multiple employees failed to give me a tip, and even if it is part of this man's job to prevent people from taking photos, that gives ABSOLUTELY no excuse to the way that I was treated. A simple "Ma'am, no photos please" would have been PLENTY enough. Or better yet...how about you post more visible signs instead shouting at people? There's food for thought. I'm a very VERY shy person and I'm traveling alone, and that experience shook me so badly that I had to sit down right after to calm my nerves. Which is the moment I am writing this review. People who get pleasure out of the discomfort and embarrassment of others don't belong in a position where they interact with other human beings. What a bad experience and stain on my stay here in Amsterdam. read more

One of my top museums ever visited! This museum is awesome! Seriously...laid out so great and dividing up Van Gogh's life so well that you are learning loads just by walking through and looking at his art. Was my most favorite Museum that we went to in Amsterdam. Amazing seeing the collection pieces from Van Gogh himself. The Almond Blossom was one of my favorite paintings, and was surprised to see it quite large. Their gift-shop had a great selection for souvenirs. The area of the Museum was in a nice location. Everything you came across, even little cafes looked Asymmetrical, or somehow decorated in an Artsy way. You won't be disappointed visiting this museum, even if you're not an art-lover. Great museum with a great swath of Van Gogh's work. You will be disappointed if your looking for Starry Night, Cafe Terrace at Night or The Night Cafe, none of these are here, but standouts like the Potatoe Eaters, Wheatfield with Crows, Irisis, and a sun flower painting are... and all are well worth seeing. Beware the line can be insanily long on weekends and during the summer. Come early, order tickets online with a time stamp and skip the line (separate line on the right), or try the late friday night (includes a band!). read more

One of the things I gathered through years and years of art school is that I am not a big fan of Van Gogh. Despite this (or maybe because of this), I was incredibly impressed by the Van Gogh museum. The majority of Van Gogh's most ubiquitous works are scattered throughout the globe, so you will not find Starry Night here. What you will find is a well put together retrospective of the Van Gogh's life demonstrated through written and visual narrative. Each room is a visually striking look into a period of the artist's life, with something new to learn even for those of us who have been jaded by too many art history classes. Most rooms also feature work by Van Gogh's friends and contemporaries, adding yet another dimension to this wonderful collection. The Van Gogh is definitely worth every Euro penny. read more

This is a fabulous museum, go early in the morning to avoid long lines. My husband and I arrived close to opening and there were only 5 people in front of us in line, by the time we left 3 hours later the line was half way down the block. You can also buy tickets in advanced online. There are many of his famous pieces here, definitely give yourself a few hours here to enjoy it all. It was a clear, concise museum that was easy to navigate, not overwhelming or too time consuming, specific to the Van Gogh topic. We ordered tickets online and arrived just before opening to get in line, and had no trouble getting in. English-language placard translations throughout. We had a great museum experience! Personally I've never had any interest in art museums. I went with my BF (at the time) because being in a relationship means compromising and going with the flow. The museum had amazing art paintings from Van Gogh, which I learned a lot about this gentleman and his history. I never knew he had such a hard life and yet his beautiful artwork is known worldwide and loved by many people. You get not only a good feel for the progression of Van Gogh through his career, but also insights into his predecessors and influential contemporaries. Three floors of beautifully organized collections. Apparently, every Friday, there's a bar (small, by the entrance) and a DJ (plays mostly background music) to set the ambiance. There is also a spacious cafe and a neat gift stores inside the building. Two confusing experiences, from an American tourist's perspective: 1. We signed up for the free guided tour and upon greeting us, the tour guide immediately told us that this is no ordinary tour, in the sense that no information about Van Gogh's life and context for his work will be given. WTF? Instead, we walked to his most obscure paintings and was instructed to jot down 5 things we saw. After being called on in turn to read our lists (shadows, plants, dark colors, people, etc.), I called BS and bounced. 2. We were herded to a small auditorium for a "dance performance" but instead of a dance ensemble prancing artistically onstage, I spent the next 10 minutes watching a naked woman writhe silently in a box. Other than that, a clean, well-organized, small museum to spend an hour or two for 15 Euros. read more

Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists for a reason--he was not born with talent. He worked hard to cultivate a style and this is even more apparent in the way that the museum curators have set up his collection. Well kept, light and airy. Got to see a good sampling of Van Gogh works. Couple of famous ones not on display...starry night and cafe.

I have never been overly enthused by art, and don't know too much about it, so I thought this museum was going to be a bit stuffy and boring...I was wrong. If you give this museum a chance, it's actually very interesting and informative. The exhibitions are in chronological order and easy to navigate. The museum takes you from Van Gogh's early years before he decided to become a painter, his years as an artist in Paris, the many artist friends he had there, his relationships with his brother, his time in the asylum in France, his post death years, and sooooo much more that I can't even remember from the museum. The museum doesn't only center on Van Gogh; there are works from countless other painters, and there is also an entirely separate exhibit downstairs, that is two floors. When I visited, the exhibit was the "prostitution exhibit." I really enjoyed this exhibit, as well. It was about the budding prostitution profession in the brothels of Paris in the 19th/20th century. It also highlighted the famous courtesans (prostitutes of high ranking men in society) of the times, and famous works of art centered on the subject of the life of a Parisian prostitute. The art portrayed these women as regular people, their hardships, struggle, and feelings. Overall, I give this museum a resounding five stars. The only negative thing I have to say, is the people here, like Pete U., who thinks it is their right as a human being (albeit an idiotic one) to take photos whenever they please, even when the signs all over clearly says, NO PHOTOS. I can't even count the number of times, I saw people take their stupid phone, and snap a photo an inch away from whatever painting they thought they had the RIGHT to take a picture of. This museum is fantastic! I enjoyed the audio tours! They audio tours were so informative and definitely interesting! Some places tend to have boring audio tours but this one definitely had me interested. There were quiet a few people but it was still a very enjoyable experience! This is a must do when you visit Amsterdam! read more

I had a great time visiting this museum. There is so much art here and so many beautiful and well-known Van Gogh pieces. There are also some of Van Gogh furniture artifacts and everything is very well presented. Truly a gem in Amsterdam. This is a very nice museum, with a wonderful collection of works from not only Van Gogh but others like Rembrandt and I think I remember seeing a Monet or two. . . It's nicely laid out and not too expensive for a personalized museum of art, but definitely go if you love art and if you have a solid 8 hours to your day. And if you finish early, and if it's a beautiful day, the grounds are surrounded by beautiful streets with a park and the "I AMsterdam" sign is nearby. So enjoy some pickled herring and brownie or two and check out the Van Gogh Museum! read more

How do you even rate a museum? Based on the art? Anyways came here one day to look at van Gough pieces -- they have a crazy collection that filled an entire gallery room full or the potato peeps! I'm not super deep so I don't contemplate on the pieces like all the artsy fartsy people. I wandered all through the museum even snuck a photo of a Monet (security guard caught me and yelled at me but I did the whole speaking to him in Chinese pretending to be a Chinese tourists from Asia that didn't understand -- that's my default when I get in trouble with the law). By the time I finished going around I realized I hadn't seen the starry night painting... odd it's van Gough's most famous piece. Went to information and showed them a picture that was on their brochure and the woman laughed saying that the painting is in NYC.... ok so then leave it off your brochure so I don't spend an hour looking for it! Lol and the sucky part is that I was just in NYC! read more

This was the BEST museum we visited during our 3-week European vacation. Needless to say, Van Gogh's art is incredible, but even more so, the design of the museum is AWESOME. We went on a Friday night, so we had the pleasure of a dj playing music in the background as we viewed Van Gogh. Be sure to buy the MuseumKaart for 59 euro. For all who live and visit from outside The Netherlands, this pass will get you into most Amsterdam museums for 31 days. It is a no brainer for museum addicts like us. This is a 5-star museum. i had a great time here! the first time i went tickets were sold out so try to go early. sometimes the ticket lineup at the door go all the way out to the streets so getting them at the tourist office would be a better idea. the museum wasn't very big but very informative. it was interesting to learn about the artist and it was nice to read and be able to absorb information and enjoy the art. hubby and i spent about 5 hours in the 3 story high museum and we really had a blast. def recommend to a friend! read more

Well, this museum is pretty stunning --both the architecture/layout of the space and Van Gogh's works. While we were here there was a special Picasso exhibit going on as well, which was awesome as Picasso is my favorite artist. I did rush through a bit, because the weather was so perfect while we were in Amsterdam that I just wanted to be outside taking in the city and walking around. This is a must-see for any first-time tourist visiting Amsterdam. read more

I know you're not supposed to judge a museum by its gift shop, but I do. And I did not like the gift shop here. Most of it was close-up sections from various Van Gogh paintings applied to everything possible that can be printed on - mouse pads, pens, umbrellas, etc. etc. etc. It all seemed to be setup for maximum uncreative money making, and the museum itself was sort of the same way. The ground floor part was closed due to construction at the time I visited, so I didn't get to see everything they had to offer. I got an audio tour thingie and was aggravated because there were numbers listed next to some paintings and when I punched those numbers into the audio tour device it either came up with no painting, or it came up with an entirely different painting in a different part of the museum than the one I was standing in front of. This happened about 10-20% of the time I punched in a number, so it was kind of annoying. They apparently cheaped out on the audio tour devices because they were difficult to use android handhelds. It was impossible to rewind and fast forward through the audio to a certain point to hear a bit over, instead you basically had to listen to the whole 2 minute description over again if you missed a specific second and wanted to hear it repeated. And whoever wrote the software never bothered to double check if all the numbers and descriptions matched up with the paintings in the museum. I know it's just a detail, but that detail is kind of the whole point of paying extra money to get an audio tour. It should actually, you know, give you information about the paintings! The one good thing about the audio tour device is that I got to see some brilliantly colored photos of the paintings I was standing right in front of, which for some reason looked faded and dull in real life. My theory is that they use low wattage bulbs in the museum to save energy and to prevent the paintings from becoming even more discolored than they already are. But that makes it difficult to see any brilliant colors under such low light conditions. That's very disappointing since there is so much discussion about Van Gogh and his obsession with colors but you can't see the brilliant colors he used when you're looking at the paintings themselves. The museum does do a good job of explaining Van Gogh's life and times and environment, and makes a coherent story of how he came to be what he came to be. But all the little irritations like not having a proper audio tour guide and the dim lighting really detracted from the experience for me. I think that most people would probably find it enjoyable, and I get the feeling the whole experience is setup for a much older crowd. So it's quite possible you would have a good time here, it just wasn't for me. I would much rather go back and see the Stedelijk Museum again. read more

I'm not an art aficionado, but I like to be well-rounded. You can tell as you peruse this place that Van Gogh was really a fan of nature but lived a troubled existence. I wouldn't call art a dying profession but seeing the types of materials used and the culture 200 some years ago, it's not as common to see them today. There are probably tens of thousands of museums worldwide but Van Gogh's name and notoriety transcended the Dutch country and his name is widely regarded with the Picasso, Matisse, Monet, Da Vinci, etc. Definitely a museum to check out while in Amsterdam. read more
